I've used a lot of monitors, and based on my experience, I learned a few things:
    - The difference between 144Hz and 60Hz is noticeable, however it only benefits gamers. On the other hand, between 144Hz and 240Hz, not so much.
    - Contrast ratio matters, which is why IPS panel might not be the best option for movies because it can never really show that "true black" which is achievable with VA and TN panels.
    - Viewing angle might not be as important as you might think when it comes to computer monitor because if you think about it, chances are 99% of the time you spend on your computer is by sitting right in front of the monitor even if you have like a 2-or-3-monitor setup. However depending on your sitting position, wider viewing angle might benefit you if you have ultrawide or bigger screens (27" and up) which is why they now make curved monitors.
    - For your own good, please consider the pixel density. 4K resolution on a 34" monitor is perfect, 4K resolution on a 27" monitor is not enjoyable, and 4K resolution on a 24" monitor is a nightmare.
    - If fps from your GPU > your monitor's refresh rate, then there is going to be a tearing effect. If fps from your GPU < your monitor's refresh rate, then there is going to be a stuttering effect. The bigger the gap, the more you can notice those phenomena. Solution for the first phenomenon is by enabling Vsync (if available in game settings), or get a higher refresh rate monitor. Solution for the other one, is by using adaptive Vsync. Adaptive Vsync allows your monitor to lower its refresh rate to match the fps pushed by your GPU, however it cannot push beyond the native refresh rate. Adaptive Vsync on Nvidia is called G-Sync, on AMD it's called FreeSync. G-Sync is more expensive because it requires additional hardware installed on the monitor, FreeSync doesn't so it's cheaper, however both do the same job.
    - A good TN panel can actually reproduce decent colors (almost on par with VA panel) if you're willing to do some color calibration.
    - If you're serious about color accuracy, try to find a monitor with AH-IPS panel, or PLS panel for Samsung monitors.

Well no, watching movies on any type of panel is perfectly fine, but for me personally, I prefer VA panels when it comes to watching movies on a monitor. It's very subjective though, some people might enjoy watching movies on an IPS monitor over VA. However if I had $700 and I want the best display just for movies then I'd probably go for an OLED TV.

I dont get why you're saying that 4K at 24' is a nightmare, apart from the fact that scaling is quite fucked up. Indeed, even tho I only own a 1440p/165Hz 24' monitor, I definitively LOVE the increase un pixel density and sharpness of the image over the 1080p variant. So I imagine that a 4K with 200% scaling would be just perfect with nearly no need of antialiasing.

Old VA and TN panels had absolutely horrible color reproduction... It is strange that now 10 years after baying my 42" LG TV with IPS panel for use as a monitor for about 650 dollars I struggle to find anything that can compete with for less than 1500 - 3000 dollars. You would think that in 10 years picture quality per dollar would go up not down...

The ideal monitor would be 120htz or 144 htz at 1440p for 27-32 inches and same refresh at 20-24 for 1080p. High refresh and cranked up textures are really the way to have the best experience. Just because you can play at a higher resolution with lower settings doesn't mean you should.
If your multitasking, than a 16:10 monitor like dells u2415 or Asus's vs24ah-p is a really good idea, as it allows you to have more screen real-estate for content with tool bars on the screen(or for apple users with their big tool bar. )

The ideal monitor is 2160p @ 144hz with QLED, HDR, 10bit color. No compromise gaming. If you can't play at high resolution at max settings then you can't afford the monitor anyway.

For multitasking slash productivity I've yet to see a better monitor setup than having a 3440x1440 ultrawide as the primary monitor, flanked by a 16:10 monitor in portrait on both sides with a 4k screen above.

    • @thevigamerpixerlator

@@trsskater A 1200 dollar system is enough to run a 1440p 144hz monitor in a lot of situations. But a monitor of those specifications is nearly HALF that budget. That's absolutely insane for just one computer part, even if you're looking at it for the majority of the time. So while that's a good analogy, its flawed.

I know I’m late but I want everyone new to gaming to know that having a 60hz monitor absolutely positively DOES NOT limit your FPS to 60. If your FPS is greater than HZ then there will be slight screen tear, vice versa there will be slight stuttering. If they’re synced up there will be slight input lag, unless you have a fancy monitor with g-sync or free-sync.

PLS / IPS / AH-IPS - Best color accuracy. Typically paired with 2K or 4K resolutions. Suited for graphic design.
VA - Middle ground. Better contrast ratio than IPS and TN. Typically paired with HDR. Suited for media centre (e.g. TV).
TN - Fast and cheap. Standard quality of color and contrast. Typically paired with high refresh rates (e.g. 120Hz-144Hz). Suited for gaming and basic computing.

The cool thing about it was I didn’t have to calibrate it. It looked good right when I turned it on. There is some backlight bleed, but not much to fuss over about. Besides is only really noticeable during dark/black scenes. Other than that, great monitor 👍🏻

The blur on my monitor feels like I'm constantly playing with motion blur, even on the 'extreme' setting of the MSI monitor. Granted, I'm going to try more before I decide, but in case anyone is in the same situation, watch out.
I have a Dell S2716DG which is a pretty badass monitor, known for it's high response rate. It's perfect for high paced games, but my god, it's difficult to move on from it since nothing quite matches it as far as I'm aware in response time.

VA are great monitors if you dont mind smearing in darker scenes i had HP LP2275w and it was amazing upgrade from TN panel both color and dark representation.
Now i moved to IPS panel and i can say colors are even better (not as much jump as TN to VA but still better)
IPS glow... yeah i dont mind it if i dont look for it as only one corner glows in about 1x2 cm and only while sitting at 60cm from screen and if i look at middle i already see corners as ambient out of focus range so i dont mind it. I sometimes get disgusted by it while boring cinematics or loading screens but thats not big deal.
Response time are much better in darker sceenes but black is more of very dark grey color which for some reason dont bother me even though i loved blacks on VA.
Viewing angles depends on lotery mine screen has like 179 degree from righ side without any glow and like 45 degree from left before glow is bad.
I would say if you play in bright room and dont play much horror games IPS > VA if you play in dark room without light VA > IPS. I actually tried both side by side and now i got used to IPS response time VA sort of feels like playing with motion blur (funnily enought i did not see it before while i only had VA monitor)

@monster master IPS colors are on whole different level, you wont belive until you see it but there is some IPS glow in 95% of cases. So it depends:
      1) are you extra competitive FPS player (i mean like top 5%) go TN
      2) do you play in totally dark room and play a lot of extremely dark games (like Outlast) go VA
      3) if those two dont apply IPS 100%
I owned all three technologies over time and i have to say all of them suck one way or another its all about compromises but the IPS is most universal one if you dont mind having some bias ligh near monitor.

@@lisalpeiris2589 The ROG VESA HDR1000 monitor is the best, why so small? I needed bigger, needing the ROG 27 as small extra screen now. Why they needed $2499 for that thing, wait till they are $999 next year....
Can't do both in one now, Philips Momentum is the best, and the 27 ROG the best for games only....

I just got the MSI Optix MAG271CV 27'' 144hz VA panel, And it's amazing! There is only very little backlight bleed. Only during night sometimes noticeable, but not a dealbreaker.

Also, isn't 1ms just a selling point? cause 1ms is only grey to grey. colors are usually more, like 4 or 5ms

IPS = Favors image quality but has slow response time and low refresh rate
TN = Favors High Response time and high refresh rate but had bad image quality
VA = In between Is better then tn when it come to quality and has a better refresh rate then IPS BUT can have very bad response time

From this and a few other videos, I actually prefer the colour and contrast on the VA panels compared to IPS.
Not sure exactly why but maybe IPS seems too saturated in colour to me while VA looks more natural. Gotta test this out in person...

So I got tired of watching reviews and did something crazy, I bought two 21:9 monitors same size, Hz, and resolution. Only diff was one was VA and the other IPS. Duplicated RDR2 on them so i could do a real time comparison.
IPS: Amazing colors, world looked "real". Sunsets and sunrises awesome. Bad side was poor contrast ratio with blacks looking grey. I have an LG OLED TV so I really notice the IPS "grey" but alas there are no true OLED monitors, probably due to burn in.
VA: Colors were "ok" but did not have the full range, vibrancy and depth of IPS. This alone ruined the otherwise beautiful open world game. It was as if VA panel had no ambient occlusion setting if you know what I mean. One thing it was better at was night scenes as the contrast ratio was better. I just couldn't get over how "cartoonish" the world looked on VA. When people say VA looks 'washed out", I now get what they mean. I can't stress this enough, you can't see this on TH-cam and it makes all the difference in gaming. The other major issue with VA was ghosting and poor viewing angles, which matters even on monitors because curved 21:9 monitors that are VA don't have good image uniformity like IPS curved do.
Summary: IMHO, VA and TN panels are not good for AAA open world games played at 60FPS. Stick with OLED or IPS for gaming as they "pop" with life and can produce all the colors the developer wanted. My personal set-up now is 3440x1440p IPS 21:9 LG, at this "2k" resolution I get 55-70FPS on most AAA games on high/ultra (i7 3770k @ 4.5ghz OC + 1070ti).

My son (age 6) and I, play BFV on PS4 and PS4 Pro respectively. He uses a 1080p, 60Hz, 1ms, TN monitor, and I use a 1440p, 144Hz, 5ms, IPS monitor, which on the PS4 Pro drops to 60Hz and up scales the resolution to 4K - with HDR on. The two of us consistently finish TDM matches in the top 5, with numerous 1st and 2nd placement. My point is: it’s more the player than the monitor. These manufacturers got us all confused, and fighting over which monitor to buy. People are pulling out their hair trying to navigate through this sea of marketing confusion. Although the information presented in this video is accurate, it’s important to note that the only time the type of monitor is relevant is at the professional level, where all the players are exceptional, and the hardware becomes critical to the success of the player. At our level, our first person shooter performance has little to do with the monitor we are using.
