    I rub my finger over the tape a few times it does help to loosen the sticky stuff a bit and pull the tape away from the painting

    I know you're still at the stage of familiarising yourself with oil pastels, but I have to say this piece turned out so well that you're already starting to look as if your mastery of the new medium is pretty much fully established. I've never dome pastels and it's possible I never shall ... ... but ... the results you're achieving with this unbelievably cheap Pentel set are really tempting me to splash out $8.29 (!) just to have a play with them. Thanks for sharing the video with us all - it was an enjoyable 11 minutes.

      Well thank you so much! That is one of the kindest things someone has said to me in a long time! Thank you for being so encouraging! And for the price, you can't really go wrong with the Pentels! Even if you hate them, it's such a minimal investment for 50 colors! It's a great way to try oil pastels!

    This girl gives Laura Ingalls vibes, she's lovely. Try sticking the masking tape on your jeans/clothes before putting it on your paper, it makes it slightly less sticky. Also I've seen pulling the tape off at an angle instead of straight down helps. 😊 Looking forward to more oil pastel work.

    Hi! Try using linseed oil or even baby oil to play with blending, with the oil pastel, or using the rubber end "brushes" ☀️

  • @mjpete27
    @mjpete27 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hullo Amy, Zest it is just a citrus based spirits. I like the Chelsea Lavender brush cleaner, it might be better. Chelsea has mediums too for oil paints, that are not toxic like Turpentine and OMS! I am striving to get more impressionist too! One of the reasons I have gone into soft pastels. I want to get less tight in my watercolors as well. Just keep working and you will find the medium that will get you where you want to be! I decided years ago that I will NOT CARE if I am considered a mixed media Artist. I am an Artist and that should be good enough.
    You can use a heat source to remove tape from pastels, if your paper starts to tear just stop and go get a heat gun or hair dryer and blow it away from the surface or angle it from the center towards your taped edge and pull as it warms up. good luck!

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was afraid the heat would melt the oil pastels! So good tip, thanks! I won't be afraid next time. I don't care if I'm mixed media as well. I'm going to do what makes me happy and if it makes me less successful, oh well. I'm not chasing success. Life is too short to chase something that probably won't make you happy in the long run anyway. Thank you for your thoughtful comments! I appreciate them!

    I highly recommend the mungyo gallery soft oil pastels. They are super cheap and they are night and day compared to the pentels. They smell a lot better too. Pentel feel very waxy to me, the mungyo are smooth, soft, and blend easily.

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip! The pentels smell awful! I thought maybe they would smell like oil paints but they don't at all! I'd really like to try the mungyo but I'm worried about the light fastness...

    • @meesespieces1510
      @meesespieces1510 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@winterwoodsstudio Yeah, it is really frustrating that mungyo doesn't show their lightfastness but I've had a few pieces that have been up for about 3 years now and no fading. The pentels fade really quickly though so watch out for that.

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@meesespieces1510 I just assumed the Pentels weren't lightfast. Which is sad, because I liked how this one turned out. I plan to do lots more oil pastels and I won't be using the Pentels.😉

    I really like how this looks. Thank you so much for sharing this and sharing what you’ve learned so far. I haven’t worked at all with oil pastels but I have heard from other artists here on TH-cam that the Mungyo Gallery and the Sennelier oil pastels are really good. It has to be the Gallery line though for the mungyo brand and they are in the less expensive category. However, the Sennelier are quite a bit more expensive. Just thought I’d pass that on in case you might want to add them to your list of ones to test and try out. Loving all the channel content. Can’t wait to see what’s next. Have a wonderful day. 😊

      Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and give me some recommendations! I've watched a lot of videos with people using the Mungyo Gallery but when I researched them, they aren't lightfast. I really do want to upgrade to some nicer oil pastels, but I'd like them to be lightfast. The Sennelier line is lightfast, but very soft and very expensive. I'm on the hunt right now for something in-between! When I find one, I'll do a new video! I am so glad you are enjoying my channel! 💓

    Very pretty. You're so talented. To prevent the masking tape from tearing, stick it down onto your clothing (like your pants) a couple of times before framing your artwork with it, to take a little of the stickiness away. And actually, cheap, low stick masking tape or Washi tape can be easier to work with than the "artist's grade" masking tape.

    That was really fun to watch. You're so talented. I like the "dreamy" quality that you evoke. I've seen people use a hairdryer on tape as they tear it off - seems to work for them. Never tried it myself just mentioning it. I use Mungyo Gallery (as an amateur) b/c it's pretty economical for a good product, but I read in the comments you're only looking for lightfast which makes sense for a professional. I'd love to get the Sennellier's but I just can't justify the price for myself. Also thanks for sharing the tips.

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the kind comments! I really appreciate them! I just did another drawing on this same paper and used the hair dryer and it STILL ripped! (I do normally do the hair dryer tip.) I don't think I'm going to work on this paper again except for practices and sketches. I wasn't a fan of the honeycomb texture either. I wonder if anyone has actually done any lightfastness tests on the Mungyo? The brand hasn't as far as I can tell, but that doesn't mean other people haven't. I might have to do some myself!

    This came out so lovely!! I am really enjoying your channel. You're doing such an excellent job so far! I can relate to everything you said in this video...I am a colored pencil and soft pastel artist, and I never thought about approaching the oil pastels the same way as I do colored pencils. Great tip. I like the Mungyo gallery oil pastels They are a nice balance between the Pentels (student grade and crumbly) and Senellier (expensive and very soft -- too soft in my opinion). You may also love the NeoColor 11 water soluble crayons, although you may have already tried them--I can't remember if you have. I also like the Canson XL sand grain paper for oil pastels. The Mungyo's blend well on them with a blending stump. Take care!

    Hi Amy, Try some Canson XL sand grain paper - it’s very inexpensive to practice on and is like a cheap pastelmat if you will. Zest it works fine with oil pastel but works no differently to the mona lisa oms you have so save yourself some money. For fine details, you can use prismacolour pencils and chinagraph pencils with oil pastels. Hope that helps. EDIT: No you don’t need OMS with Sennelier or even Gallery. Try blending your pentel with cotton ear buds and see how you go. You van always add a little baby oil on the buds.

      @@winterwoodsstudio I have a set of the mungyo yes but I use them for underpainting, then I top off with Sennelier. The sennelier and the caran d’ache NEOPASTEL (not the caran d’ache neocolor) are the best two types of oil pastels imho. Expensive but worth it. You can buy single sticks of both brands so maybe try a couple of each before investing to see what you think. 🙂
