I remember I'd have 350+ apps installed on my LG optimus G in 2012. The beauty of android is that after gaining root access I had complete control on every app, service or activity.
My phone was actually faster than the stock phone and the battery lasted longer.
You just need to know a little about the "open sourcenesss" of android and there are good and friendly communities already available for research like xda.
Yeah, using ADB to uninstall bloat wear & disable services running in the background is a great way to breath life into an old phone. My main device is a S7 which still feels snappy.
The thing is, a mobile OS/device is so handicapped and limited that it just doesn't seem worth it to me. To me, a phone is just a tool to listen to music, send a message, or maybe watch a video or something. Doesn't seem worth the effort to learn all that, jailbreak/root (and risk "bricking") the device just to have that kind of control.
If I want all that I'll just use my linux desktop/laptop which is super easy to install nowadays.

Bought mine S7 edge once it came out, costed me over 1000€ (due to insurance extension and a few acessories) and then it failed just after 2 months after the warranty went off.
The motherboard went poof, but I bet it was an update because the phone went weird and in the screen i could see that the update made my phone go crazy, it worked like normal and 5 minutes later the motherboard goes boom boom

Although I do agree with some of the points raised in this video, i entirely disagree with the reason for SSD performance degradation:
Raw NAND storage is cheap and of extremely low quality. for that reason, error correction algorithms are being used to provide the required data retention and performance quality.
Over time, NAND degrade even further, which increase the load on the error correction algorithms increasing access time.
Someone sent Me 459 texts in 24 hrs. Then another sent 278 same time. Then They complain when I talk text & it is long. Yet I don't sit there and type hi. Then how are you. Then what are you doing. LOL. But I will get these all day long and believe me when I want to say something I say it into the microphone just like I'm doing now.
I went to the Apple store yesterday to replace the battery. The tech looked at my phone and suggested I wait another 5-6 months before changing the battery. I thought this was really cool of him. I am not having issues with battery life so to say. So, I am glad that Apple techs can run diagnostics and see how good your phones battery is doing. I do hope to get another year or two out of this iPhone. (:

You forgot to mention RAM. OS updates eat more ram (look at the difference between ios 5-6 and ios 9 for instance, a 256MB ipad 1 on ios 5 is faster than a 512MB ipad 2 on ios 9... Also the internet has become more "RAM intensive" over the years, pages and services from 6 years ago took much less ram then now (people attribute this to browsers like Chrome, but that's only part of the truth...)

The worst problem for older phones is lack of internal space, but if you have one of those Chinese phones with big batteries and internal space, but low everything else, those things can last a long time if you don't break them. All my phones I changed because lack of internal space was nagging me, that's why I have now a S9+ with 128Gb. Finally enough quantity.
This happened to me with every Samsung phone I've had but not with my Pixel. Still running like new after 2 years.
How about why Windows updates take a million years?

My Xiaomi phone has not slowed 1 bit in 18 months. All other phones I have had in the last 8 years have been unusable or died before this time.
Mine works also fine, I'm rocking a Xiaomi Mi A1 with Android 9.
My Mi 5 had become straight up unusable after 6-7 months. Then I flashed LineageOs and it's like a new phone now.

Had a Huawei P9 Lite, after two months it was running worse that my old Moto G first gen. Now i have a Xiaomi Redmi 5A for a year and it runs like butter.
Have an Oneplus 6t (2018), oneplus 3 (2016) and oneplus 2 (2014) and still use the 2 and 3 every day for pokemon go and stuff. That's how good they are even after all those years. Can't say that about crapple or shitsung
This really makes sense. My phone has the same specs as my brothers but it's older.
As someone watching this on a mid-2014 entry-level phone, I haven't had many problems. Most essential apps on the play store still work, chrome works fine for browsing, TH-cam plays without problems, and I don't need to worry about battery life getting worse because it's replaceable. The only major problems are the charging port getting loose (although I have a wireless pad somewhere) and 4.4.2 not letting me use all my storage.

@@whitmanbohorquez184 Yeah 442 has problems with external storage that got too annoying to deal with and my carrier merged with another one that made everyone get new phones for free, plus I think I dropped it a few times and I think I was getting difficult to charge. I think I still have it somewhere just not turned on or on a network.

What we should really be asking is why the price of these phones are so unrealistically high when we know there is absolutely NO justification for it! Factor in the life expectancy of a phone is about 3 years and it gets even more absurd!

It applies to everything, when they release a newer product their first priority is to convince you it's worth it and a million times better than what you already have. It's not that people don't realize they don't need it but advertising it over and over and over implants the idea in your head that you want it, people talking about it a lot makes you think that certain thing is super interesting and exciting and you must have it hence they will increase the price because they know people will even apply for bank loans to buy certain stuff that they don't need in reality. If you think about it, that's how the world worked since the beginning of times.

It's interesting how Windows uses volatile memory (RAM) and normal memory to find a sort of middle point between the sleep mode and a complete system shutdown. It actually transfers the content of the RAM to the system memory and keeps it temporarily to use 0 energy while booting your computer faster at a restart. Will you talk about this cool feature?

This can’t be everything I’ve reseted my (old) phone (Samsung galaxy A3 2016) 10 times in a row and erased everything (didn’t load the backup and even waited a few days after reinstalling), I have no SIM card and no third party app installed and the phone is slow and laggy as hell anyway
And I don’t think the battery is that bad either

Same, reset my Lenovo yoga 2 and it is still very slow! Planned obsolescence is everywhere in the industry.
Lets not forget that they put cheap QLC SSDs in them with not enoiugh over-provisioning for worn out memory cells. Those constant excessive app updates & running in the background wear down QLC SSDs fast, so you're regularly loosing more usable memory. Without plenty of useful functioning memory left on the SSD, it slows down. They don't really want your devices to last more than 2 years, but do want to build them good enough to hold up until the warranty runs out.

Apparently /e/ is really good too. It is designed with privacy in mind so it has no Google services so that might be a deal breaker to some. Also it is made by the creator of Mandrake Linux so it is in good hands.

only problem i tend to have with older phone is the battery life going down the pan..
I imagine most people's phones slow down because they have a sh** ton of random apps they never touch that just run.
I keep my phone as minimal as I can to function the way I need (with literally 4 small games).
Also troubleshooting 101. The very first thing to try is power off the device. Wait at least 30 seconds so electronics can discharge. I do this anytime any electronic device is having issues. If it something like your home network always remember to turn everything off. When powering up start with the first device connected to the outside world (like the cable modem). Wait a few minutes and then power up the devices connected to that device like an access point/WiFI router-mesh. Then the devices that connect to the home network like computers, and cell phones. "It's always best to start at the beginning - and all you do is follow the Yellow Brick Road."

@Ray actually it does I've had to do it with my phone at least once to clear any unnecessary data and free up internal storage again. However doing this means data that is not on an SD MEMORY CARD gets lost altogether.

Forgot a important thing, overtime and over read/write, nand chip wear and get slower. On cheap chip this is noticeable a lot. On a old phone fresh old os install, you wont get the original speed.
Finally a didicated video about the topic and still completely missing the mark. As the internal resistance of a battery increases over it's lifetime, the internal voltage-drop also increases when a high current is drawn. The outside voltage monitoring would falsly identify that as the battery suddenly being empty (sudden voltage drop). A proctection circuit kicks in, immideatly shutting the phone down. This can be prevented by reducing the maximum current draw allowed, which is exactly what apple did by throtteling the processor.

you know I've been thinking about watercooling and I had an idea. What if you mixed an aio with a blower heatsink so instead of it justcooling the water in the radiator it also cooled the cpu using a blower tooso you have constant cooling on both ends of the AIO

You can't turn off system updates anymore. They're constant and it drives me crazy. This is Microsoft's fault for demonstrating that people are to apathetic to make them stop...
