  • Tasting 10 Vintages of Sauternes 1995 to 2016! What’s the Best Vintage for Sauternes? Watch Episode 1 of the Series: • What you Need to Know ...
    Tasting 11 different vintages of Grand Cru Classé winery located near Bordeaux, making Botrytis sweet dessert wines, from vintage 1995 to 2016, through 2000, 2002, 007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015. Complete wine tasting notes, aromas, flavor descriptions, ratings and reviews. Finding out which is the best vintage of Sauternes of the past 20 years, what are the vintage variations and scores (better than Robert Parker's Wine Advocate's or of any critics really ;-). Part of the Tasting with Julien video series....
    A huge thank you to Chateau Coutet for sending me those wines. Wine commentators like me who make free content available to everyone, unlike a lot of wine critics, need this kind of support. This is not sponsored, but Coutet supplied all of these beautiful wines which is not a small thing. So check those guys out, they deserve it.
    The château is an English fortress that was built in the 13th Century. In 1787, Thomas Jefferson the former US President who was a lover of Bordeaux wines and who made his own classification, ranked Château Coutet as the best Sauternes from Barsac. Now owned by the Baly family since 1977, Coutet is exclusively distributed by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild group, owner of Mouton Rothschild. Some friendly people there. Anyhow, let’s get tasting.

    Incredible. For me, this would be like dying and going to heaven. Many years ago, someone brought a bottle of Sauternes to the table after dinner. I had never tasted anything like that before, and I was never the same. I love reds and dry whites but Sauternes is a glorious wine sui generis.

    I’m still relatively new to wine and my first Sauternes was the 2008 vintage of this wine. I fell in love with it at first sip ❤ I’ve tried several other Sauternes since and this one is still my favorite so far 😊

    Great tasting. Very exciting and educational at the same time. I had the opportunity to taste some Yquem recently from2006, so I appreciate this development from citrus and sweetness, although the 2006 was just a baby. Thanks.

    • @YouTubeJulien

      Yquem is a monster of balance and age-worthiness. A class of its own in Sauternes. So, yes, possibly 2006 d'Yquem is still a baby, while other chateaus evolve faster. there's good and bad in both, I mean, at least you can enjoy an aged Sauternes faster with other Chateaus, and buy 12+ bottles for the price of 1 d'Yquem too ! Tx for stopping by J.

    I worked in a wine shop 15 years ago. I got to taste a Sauterne, possibly D'Yquem, but I don't remember other than it was expensive and gorgeous to look at. The only way I can describe it is what gold itself would taste like. I loved it. I have a bottle a coworker gave me-- Chateau Suduiraut 1990. I also have a split of Chateau de Rayne Vigneau 2005.

    I tried a 2009 Latour Blanche in Dec 2019. I find it abit closed for now because I had a raymond lafon 2009 few years ago and it was more expressive. Perhaps it's best to leave the 2009 alone for now for a few years before it wakes up again.

    update: had the 2009 coutet in early this year (2022). we wanted to serve it abit cooler so grabbed a bucket, scooped some snow and stick the bottle in there. Man the 2009 is such a good vintage. It had the apricot, stone fruits, in the nose and I feel an ice tea after finish.

    Thanks for this great tasting, Julien. This is a wine i always have trouble pulling the trigger on when i see it. Perhaps, i may pick one or two up to let age some. The sweetness is always what makes me turn away from them.

      I see what you're saying Sal. I'm a bit the same. I'll make a video next about how to enjoy Sauternes, where I try to indicate a good way to enjoy it and share. I have a bit the same problem as you, as I don't like swettness that much, so tried to think of 'innovative' ways to still enjoy it. Will probably publish this in 2-3 days. Tx for stopping by

      SC 34, have you taken the Sauternes plunge yet? I'm a dry wine fan but Sauternes is just an incredible experience because of the noble rot. It's sweet but not cloying and, depending on the quality and age of the bottle, has an amazing combination of flavors. Just splash out and buy an older bottle, or look at an index to see which younger ones are suitable for drinking.

    Hi Julian, what glass would you suggest to drink Sauternes. Many restaurant uses really small glass I feel its not enabling me to experience the complexity of Sauternes wine.

  • @chriswiseman5985
    @chriswiseman5985 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Have never tasted Sauternes - now I want to experience it. Julien, what glass do you generally taste with? Pleasing shape and looks like the opening is not too small for the pour/taste!

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd recommend the 2015 Chateau Rieussec Sauternes. Top notch quality at a bargain price. Absolutely wonderful to drink and enjoy plus this is an investment quality vintage!

    julien....i have 3 bottles of 2003 Chateau Coutet......I noticed you glanced over 2003. Is it past it's time for that vintage???

    • @YouTubeJulien
      @YouTubeJulien  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it should be great. I'd think it would be around the same evolution as the 2002 in my video, possibly a littl emore evolved as 2003 was that year when there was this massive heat wave in August, so the wine should be very opulent and tropical, and it's probably evolved fairly quickly. So probably something in between the 2002 and the 1995 I describe in the vid. But I'd think go for it relatively soon, maybe for Christmas this year? Unless you like really evolved Sauternes with a lot of earthy savoriness.

      @@jhea55 It's different than most sweet wines because of the noble rot. Yes, it is sweet, but not cloyingly, overpoweringly so.

    2000 was a legendary vintage reds and considered average at best for sweat whites, this guy does not sound like he know s what he is talking about. if you don't believe me look it up the 2001 will sell for triple the price of the 2000. All his tasting notes sound like garbage.

    • @YouTubeJulien
      @YouTubeJulien  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tx Daniel. Nice descriptors you're using :-) My notes are based on what I taste, not preconceived ideas of what the wine should be like because Robert Parker or whoever said, the prestige of the label, etc.... But that's fine with me. Keep tasting your wine based on what others think about them. I've got no problem with that. Enjoy 🥂👍😃

      @@TH-camJulien After looking over my 500 plus tasting notes on sauterns I stand by my comments. Robert parker does not even taste wine anymore. besides even the most novice taster knows the virtues of tasting blind. I once had a master of wine tell me something that has stuck with me my whole career " just because you like it does not make it high quality" mcdonalds serves more people then every fine dinning restaurant combined it does not make it good food.

      @@danielkress542 fine Daniel. Every one his own. I don't pretend to know any better than others. No one really does, as you point out, with wine. So i share passion, views and knowledge of wine, humbly. That's all. If you see this as 'garbage', that's certainly your problem, not mine. I'm sure you can do better, and also sure i won't use this kind of words against you unless you attack me, probably not even if you do 😉 Humility my friend, especially with wine 🥂 take care man, and try positivity 😀👍

      @@danielkress542 it sounds like you don't like my comments about the wines, which is perfectly fine. We all taste differently, don't we?
      Now, calling someone's words about a wine 'garbage' is either trolling or (close to, to say the least) bullying. I guess a bit of both here?
      But what you're saying is that because you've read 500 notes about Sauternes, what i say is 'garbage'!? Are you?
      What is this? 🤔 Troll? Bully?
      It sounds like you're a very interesting person. You probably have a lot to say about the wines you taste. Why not trying to write or make videos about them, i guess that's what i meant in my previous comment. I'd happily watch or read 🥂
