  • This is Matt, who is a fire fighter for the London fire brigade. Matt has had a licence for nearly 20 years! He's been driving as a blue light driver for 6 years.
    He is an experienced driver and it shows! His driving was impressive!
    As a blue light driver you have to plan well in advance and be full aware of everything around your vehicle.
    Overall Matt drove very well, BUT... I can't even believe he made this mistake!

    Hey Amin. I took the extended mock driving test recently. I wouldn’t have passed apparently, I got 3 serious faults, I think mainly because after driving for quite a number of years I do somethings almost instinctively that I think a learner wouldn’t do due to lack of experience. I still consider myself a good and safe driver by always checking my mirrors and being considerate to other road users.
    I strongly believe that every driver should at least be made to take a standard driving test every ten years, to keep up to scratch and I would encourage every driver to take a mock test to see if they could pass muster.
    I still found it an enjoyable experience.

    I had blue lights on my driving test.. I was going up a hill and there was a car parked on the other side of the road. The police car was coming towards me and because I was going up hill I panicked and just carried on driving and the police car had to stop. Thought I’d failed but the examiner told me it was the safest thing to do instead of suddenly stop as there were cars behind! I would have also probably failed on a hill start anyway🤣

    My understanding as someone who got their license in Canada is that if the light is green you are allowed to enter the intersection and wait until traffic clears (or the light turning red and traffic clears) and can then complete the turn. This is called taking charge of the intersection and actually is a safe way to drive since it separates the decision of wanting to turn and committing to the turn into separate things. Instead of hanging back at the light and gunning the engine to make the turn you start off in the intersection ready to complete the turn once traffic clears.

    • @NetITGeeks
      @NetITGeeks ปีที่แล้ว

      This is correct only in Canada. I am also from Canada and you are correct but not in UK. Also, in Canada, in most cities you can drive into a red light if there are emergency vehicles that need to get by. That is not the case in UK.

    • @j2simpso
      @j2simpso ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NetITGeeks well if you get a red light camera ticket for doing that I would still appeal the charge on principle. Yeah it's breaking the law but I get to sleep well at night knowing I did the ethical thing there.

    Matt is a good driver, but even an experienced driver can be confused in a certain situation which is unfamiliar. If the exit is clear, we can stay in the yellow box!! One thing worse than failing your test and that's been told I'm still not ready to take it! I've had like almost 100 hours now and three mock tests where I've made one serious error and a few minors so I think I can take the test but my instructor still feels I'm not quite there yet. Maybe I'm just not good at driving which is just depressing in itself but can't give up after all this money and effort. I'm almost 40 so age doesn't help but after this many hours I should be there. It is really depressing.

    Impeccable drive. I love watching these videos and I can now pick out faults with mirror checks and observations and this video was a pleasure. When I am with other people driving it always makes me uneasy when I notice they didn’t check their mirrors before moving off or not observing further down the road. I am autistic and observations and planning for driving have become one of my obsessions. I did an advanced test and had to do a commentary drive and assess the road conditions as far up the road as I could. Observations like in this video are essential to train your mind. I sometimes go into commentary mode sometimes to stay alert. The fault in the yellow box was a shame, in fact when I was in a driving lesson the instructor said it would be a fail on test to enter it when I did to turn right but I later showed them the Highway Code rule and they said I was right. It is just one of them rules that can be Confusing.

  • @CycleCalm

    I don't understand the lane markings at 28:12, lane 1 doesn't have to exit left, toward the side road or A316, they can continue further round onto A4(W). But the lane 2 that you guys are in, also can exit left onto the A316... if someone in lane 1 is going onto A4(W), that will cause a conflict as you don't have the opportunity to spiral out, and will have to do some difficult or dangerous merging, unless I am missing something?
