The most misunderstood statement is Mao’s “political power grows out the barrel of a gun”. He wasn’t talking about weapons or gun control, rather the gun refers to the Chinese army. Mao strongly disagreed with other Communists that the army should take orders from the government, rather he wanted them to be directly subordinate to the Communist Party. Otherwise he feared they would play kingmaker.

@Miguel Correa the cultural revolution was a disaster because many innocent people were arrested or killed during those years, but you have to understand that it was popular in all over the world, at the beginning it had a strong public opinion basis, and sometimes you can never get justice with peaceful methods.

Mao was so extreme that even Stalin had to take a step back and go 'daaaaamn that's vicious".
@Nazx 36 Well, from what I read and understand, yes, the two did start off with a good relationship because they were both communists. But as time progressed Mao's tactics became so extreme that even Stalin, quite the extreme figure himself, found Mao too extreme. Going even as far as to call Mao's communism it's own thing. Thus leading to the relationship between China and the Soviet Union becoming shaky.
