  • A "light" remastering of an unreleased demo by Gregg Alexander of The New Radicals. This is an unreleased track probably recorded around 98 - 99. Gregg Alexander sings a demo of a song he later would win a Grammy for writing. I think the vocals here are perfect.

    here's a fun fact: when Joni Mitchell first heard You Get What You Give, she emerged from a long funk and crisis of faith and it re-ignited a passion in her to continue to innovate in her song writing

      @Jerry Landers And, interestingly, the version on the Santana "hits" album isn't even that one, it's Santana and Tina Turner! So, originally the song featured Gregg, who co-wrote it, then Clive Davis wanted a woman/bigger star, so he brought Tina Turner on. She refused to shoot a video, so they got Macy Gray. Davis wasn't satisfied with what Macy Gray did, so at the last minute, they brought Michelle Branch in. And a great song got pretty much buried under all that history and pop-industry maneuvering

    Since I was a young kid I already fell for this song, more so it had Carlos Santana's classic licks and it was interpreted by my crush (back then), Mich Branch :3
    Fast forward 20 years later, and I hear this on a lazy weekend; so this was a Gregg Alexander!!! Now this explains why it was magically addictive all along! Also read that Maestro Carlos, with all due rspect to Mich B, also digs Tina Turner's version...

      Same I used to think Game of Love was about Michelle Branch at the time. Had no idea it was something else that had nothing to do with her though once I heard this one. Sure got to hear the other songs Michelle Branch was doing in the 2000's and it was a point where she was transitioning from teen years to adult at the time of her albums.
      Then I noticed a Jpop crew used this song and translated it as "Kimi Ni Fuku Kaze" for the Japanese Audience. I had no idea this Gregg Alexander's song even went to Jpop execs too after this song was released here in the USA.

    I'm sure a lot of people have one of 'these', but man, did Gregg Alexander not deserve to be a one-hit wonder...even if he never put out anything beyond "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too", that record alone is filled top to bottom with masterful pop that--combined with the lovably offbeat voice and lyrics he sits on top of it all--results in something really special. The fact that technically incomplete demos like this and "A Love Like That" are strong enough just as they are shows how natural the talent is. A few years back I read a great article that interviewed him about working on the music for "Begin Again", but still brought up the New Radicals period...but even that was frustrating, because the journalist repeatedly referred to the "one great song" they were responsible for.

    • @mywhychromosome
      @mywhychromosome 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cabalen Entertainment She had a couple of earlier solo hits..."Everywhere", and I think the other one was called "Happy Now", but yeah...I know what you mean

    • @mywhychromosome
      @mywhychromosome 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cabalen Entertainment Do you know what happened to her, btw? Is she still doing solo tours just on a smaller kind of scale, or did she become more of a 'behind-the-scenes' songwriter, like Gregg? Cos she seems like someone that could be really cool to see now, on a like stripped down, small-venues solo tour, you know?

    • @mywhychromosome
      @mywhychromosome 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cabalen Entertainment Wow, thanks for the info...a lot of quirky stuff going on there I had no clue about. Obviously she can't be touring now--since NO ONE can--but I'd be curious to see if when that stuff starts up again, if she hits the road...even just being familiar with a handful of those early 00's singles, I'd totally check her out at the right venue.

      This is the original and was recorded and written by Gregg and in fact he also did the original record with Santana but the producer thought it would be better with a women's voice. Michelle Branch was the third female that tried to sing it and they used her take for the album. Michelle sings it a lot like Gregg did.
