      Some through dowels would look slick, try getting some brass tubing and put a dowel in side it and use that to pin the work together (if using metal use an appoxy to glue them). Nice job 👍

    Thank you, Tamar for mentioning to keep the same face against the fence when splitting wide boards in half as you did! That is the first I have ever heard to do that!! I wondered why my splitting boards hadn't turned out so great & now thanks to you, I know!!

    I love that you still get out to the shop when it's cold. It's been hovering around -25 C here... even the lights don't want to work right in my non-insulated shop! Something I plan to remedy this summer.

    Great job, nice gift for someone.
    I like the solid wood better than plywood. I think the plywood would soak up to much and separate.
    I also feel because it will be in a relatively climate controlled environment the glue up won’t impact as bad. If it was outdoor furniture then you might have to be more cautious.

    Brilliant idea with the crumb tray. I'm fed up with sweeping up crumbs... You've already thought of all the things to do for the next version ! Miter joint is fine, although they can be finicky to cut,, splines of contrasting wood colors would look nice. Bridal joints would look good as well and provide lots of glue up area. Also letting the sides purposely overhang would not look so bad. Miter joints will show you when your wood is not squared, lol.. I know this as fact,, in my own experiences... for your build, of what we see Tamar, these were a success. I would suggest one addition, get your favorite bread knife, lie it inside on the bottom.. trace the outline, rout out this outline, then place the bread knife into this routed out area and place the cutting board surface on top. This allows you to,stow away the knife and board at the same time. Your push button dowel could be again utilized to pop the top off and back on again.

      I find it's 'habit thing' for me... So I'm trying to get into the 'habit' of stopping between steps and evaluating what I need to do next. It makes me slow down and think a bit. I also break down the various steps and write them out in a note and refer back to the notes. It might not work for everyone, but it works for me most of the time. Great project!

    Tamar, once again you have put together a neat project. Thanks for sharing.
    FYI - When you use a sled for your planer you want the little "lip" or "foot" on the sled to be going through last. This help to keep the piece from sliding back once the knives/cutters hit the piece. If you send the foot through first its not really doing anything. ;)

    • @3x3CustomTamar
      @3x3CustomTamar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much!
      Soooo I got this sled idea from Colin Kinect who has the lip in the front. Then I saw another video where it was in the back. So I tried flipping it around once and the board jumped forward on the sled! So I do it in the front now...

    • @chairman72
      @chairman72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the rollers might pull the board forward if the cutters arn't making contact. I have yet to make one as I am lucky enough to have a jointer at my disposal but eventually one day i am going to have to I think. :)

    Butt joints are fine. How about using through dowels at corners from face grain board into end grain board? Maybe 2 per corner....proportionately smaller than yours? And it gives a nice contrasting accent.

  • @jamesstanlake4064
    @jamesstanlake4064 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would use a miter joint
    There are many different ways to get a job done and I tend to not judge which one is best and the best path to take is the one you feel most comfortable with.
    My 2 cents on finishes are good to use is I steer clear of oil finishes as they will not cure like other finishes and many of the oils can and will go rancid which is never a good thing. Once a finish is fully cured any finish is food safe. One finish I highly recommend is Tung Oil. Make sure you use pure Tung Oil and you have to read the labels because many finished calling themselves as Tung Oil are actually a blend of other finishes that have some Tung Oil in them but are not the same or as good as the real pure Tung Oil. Tung Oil comes from the nut that grows on the Tung tree that is native to China. It is super easy to apply, simply apply with a cloth and let it completely dry between coats and it will build into a nice finish that is unaffected by sun or weather.
    Keep up the nice projects.

    Currently, my favorite joint isn't a recognized joint ( or maybe just not acknowledge technique). I simply drill a 45 degree hole at the corner and run a dowel through. I scar the dowel so the glue has something to grip. It's essentially a round spline. After sanding, it looks rather elegant.

    Given the design perhaps box/finger joints would look good and still keep it simple. Spline reinforced miter with cherry spline would look good as well me thinks :-)

  • @zacharymoore1238
    @zacharymoore1238 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    personally I would have used finger joints, because they look nice and they are easy to do.

    What information can you share concerning the "Jointer edge kinda thingy" Tamar?? It looked interesting one I freeze framed it in your video to get a good look at it. Thank you in advance!!

      Not sure what you’re referencing but if it’s a router jig then I have a whole playlist for router jigs

      @3x3Custom - Tamar It is the "Thingy" as you called it, that you used to joint the edges of the slabs of wood that you used in this video. It is shown at the 2:00 min. mark of this video.

    Miter joints and oak splines would really set it off. I think also that I would make the box out of walnut and the slats out of oak. The color contrast would be very nice.

      To each their own. We use this in our dining room. And it keep the crumbs off the dining table so that we can easily carry it into the kitchen to clean up
