You're right that this would be an HR nightmare now, but it's not always been like that. In the UK, none of this would have been something that the firm would get involved would prior to about 2000 (although it might have been earlier in larger firms). When I started working in offices in the 1980s, there were plenty of office romances and affairs. I could tell you some stories. And every year there would be a punch up at the Christmas party once the booze started flowing. Sometimes people would be sacked for it, but most you'd just be told to shake hands and not do it again.
