Dawn was sad because she admired Tim for chasing his dreams and deciding to get out of Wernham Hogg. When Tim said he was staying for an extra £500 a year and then started talking just like Brent (“vis a vie”) she was disappointed in him for giving up so easily.

Fun fact - the cleaner who steps out and stares at the camera is Stephen Merchant's dad.

The office uk is a masterpiece. Multi layered with depth of character. The art is in the subtlety.

The Office is a comedy masquerading as a fly on the wall documentary series, hence why they’re always glancing at the camera and sometimes talking to an unseen person as if being interviewed. In the late 90s early 00s these types of documentaries following ‘real’ people in workplaces was very popular in the U.K.

This is quintessential British comedy. The only American comedy show that I could compare it to is Curb Your Enthusiasm, in that it makes me laugh and cringe at the same time.

Yeah Curb does have that uncomfortable dry british humour, with an american setting.

@@MrMarcy76 The similarity is confirmed for me by the fact that my wife can't watch either of them. The cringe outweighs the humour for her. Mind you, she doesn't get Count Arthur Strong either, so maybe she's an unreliable witness.

Tim didn’t want to leave Wernham Hogg because of Dawn, he was fed up of wasting his life in a job he didn’t like. He embarrassed himself asking her out after he’d already said he was going to quit. Also, I didn’t see it as them almost going to kiss at the party; for one thing, Lee, her fiancé was there. I take their closeness to mean that they are so comfortable around each other and, as others have pointed out, Dawn was disappointed in Tim’s change of attitude. All that said, I’m enjoying these reactions and am looking forward to Series 2 🙂

I studied psychology. There is a diverse range of jobs in this field. I was aiming for working in the NHS with victims of assult and PTSD - but another area that interested me was geographical. Psychologists can advise on city planning - believe it or not areas with certain lay outs have a lower crime rate than others. Its interesting stuff.

Dawn was sad when Tim told her he wasn't leaving because she wanted him to break free of the rut like he said he wanted to, and imagined maybe joining him in breaking away from their current lives... instead he's taken the easier route of staying in the rut but on a higher salary.

It's been alluded to but it's very subtle I suppose, Dawn is sad because Tim has become just like Brent and the upper management they all joke about

I do enjoy watching your reactions to The Office and how you make sense of it. Your take on it shows up very well the differences between what I'd call typically British humour and typically American humour. As you picked up on, the first thing to understand about the office is that it is a spoof of a type of reality show. Over here, back in the 1990s and early 2000s, there were a lot of reality programmes showing people in the work place. Ricky saw these and realised the potential for comedy. The David Brent character sees the fact that a documentary is being made about his office as a means to becoming famous. That's why he plays up to the cameras so much and tries to make himself look good, but he just comes over as a bit sad and pathetic. Pathos is often an element of British humour; it goes back at least as far as Shakespeare and his Tragicomedies. It's not something you see too much in US comedies in my experience. Our British comedies are often downbeat and negative, with characters that can be seen as "losers", but who are trying to make the best of life despite the difficulties. Key to it is to be able to laugh, no matter how bleak things are. I'm sure that for us over here, that ability to laugh when things have been at their worst partly comes from WWII, when many of us were attacked on a nightly basis. If we hadn't have laughed, we might have given up. As for Dawn and Tim, the relationship is something that many office workers will recognise (I've been there myself, many decades ago now). I think Tim does genuinely want to move on and do something to better himself (psychology is considered a science, although not one of what are known as the hard sciences ... physics, chemistry, biology) and Dawn likes that, because she is also ambitious. Her face at the end of this episode shows that she is disappointed that Tim isn't going to follow his dream and escape the mundane life he is leading. You'll notice that Tim, at the end, is talking like David Brent. I won't spoil the episodes to come by saying more. Keep up the great videos.
