So often this beautiful song is sung in a rather cold manner, devoid of emotion and concentrating on the purity of voice. However, have they READ the text? This is from the age of Shakespeare when the display of emotions was set free to be expressed openly. This song is all about emotion, heart-rending sorrow and here, the singer gives it just that. It moves you whereas few others do. Thank you for this.
Dear slashtiger, the reason for the lack of the 1st verse is that the person recording did not have his camera ready at the beginning of the concert. We will be releasing a CD in December featuring this song with all its verses. Yes, we live in Amsterdam. Thanks for your comment!
Valeria: BRAVA!
You guys are superstars! I have been watching and all your videos are filled with an energy that comes through the screen! Thank you so much for being a part of TH-cam!
Come again! Sweet love doth now invite Thy graces that refrain To do me due delight, To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die, With thee again in sweetest sympathy.
@olegboleg Actually, Old English is much earlier(spanning from roughly 450-1300). Dowland, living in the early seventeenth century (and an exact contemporary of Shakespeare) spoke what is considered early modern English.
@olegboleg To be even more picky, English after 1500 is considered modern English (even though as you say Dowland, Shakespeare and others sound a bit different to us). Old English was spoken in the early middle ages (after the Romans left Britain) and is also know as Anglo - Saxon. It sounds more like Norse than any English we know. ;)
@logosthedestroyer i wasn't saying that she doesn't sing well, i can only tell from my own experience that standing up while singing is much more comfortable. it is important to be "rooted" to the floor, that way you can "feel" what you're singing... that is so hard to explain in english! :D
I'm writing from Peru. I love listening to Baroque music and music before the seventeen century. I will be waiting for your CD and, please, how can I get here in Peru this CD and more information from your works?
@logosthedestroyer i guess you're right - it's all just a matter of habit and practice! ^^ and if it was traditional in this time to sit while singing, it would explain why this performer is sitting. thanx for the explanation! :)
@o0OHermioneO0o I know what you mean; I sing too and do prefer to stand up. But, I think it was more traditional for singers of this era to sit as part of an ensemble. And I know the concept of 'rooting' is something which can be adjusted to suit any posture. I know of an excellent singer who performs in her wheelchair. It's all about habit and practice.
I'd Simply *LOVE* to hear this in its entirety... Shame this vid only stats as of the 2nd verse. I love this interpretation... @Lutevoice: Is there any way for me to hear this song (your perfrmance, that is) in its entirety? Been looking 'round on your site and all, but it's not on your cd. That's a pity, really, because I'd love to order that as well. I saw you were actually based in The Netherlands. Is that true, cos I am as well...
That is just nasty. Her gorgeous accent lends the music an added charm. This as good as it gets. The only thing I would change is to have her sing standing for better vocal projection.
@Bassman911 actualy the song isn't dirty the orginal ong was about a woman who wasn't in love with a man and he says how he''ll die without her and how she is a bitch..this doesn't have the fulllyrics
I agree with all here that she sings it beautifully. I'd just say though that I can't hear any "old English" accent in her singing. Her accent sounds just like a perfect modern, standard english one to me (speaking as an English person)
I don't understand what your quibble is. I said it sounds modern, that's all I said. What, you think this is an old English accent? Perfected by a modern day Italian woman? I really don't know what you're saying.
Oh, dear. TTTru TTai unkind disdain. She has a most beautiful voice. Her th's need work though. The th you hear in "thy" is not he same sound as you hear in "think". One is voiced and the other is not. Easiest way to make the sound for a nonenglish speaker is to make the s sound and bring the tongue forward so that it touches the teeth. ssssssssss ththththththththth
Beautiful female voice is so sacred.
With the beautiful lute music. Lifts my spirits

Voca GRANDIOSA. Ottimi movimenti. Davvero ottima.
This is my favorite John Dowland right now. This was terrific. -Ron
Brava!!!!
Cantado como tiene que cantarse. Sin palabras. Solo música. Gracias por este hermoso regalo /
A charming performance, conveying not just the beauty of the music but the intent of the words.

You are lovely... The music heavenly. Even though it was eleven years ago. It's time less. djuk
Sra.

this is brilliant, her voice & accent just remind of the vocalist of the Blackmore's Night band.

bravissimi, interpretazione perfetta
Very well done.
One of the most beautiful renditions of Dowland's work I've heard. Bravi, Ms. Mignaco and Mr. Marin.
bravo!
She's amazing!!!! Beautiful voice!!!!
Celestial ambrosia
Thank You for this piece of music! Renaissance has a truly unique touch and subtle beauty!
Absolutely great and marvellous! Best wishes from Germany :)

Thy graces that refrain
To do me due delight,
To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die,
With thee again in sweetest sympathy.
Reading the comments actually made me curious as to how it would sound if somebody sang this song in proper late-16th century English.
hermosa obra hermosa mujer, muy buen laudista.
Salute!
@Domzdream It's a song. Dowland wrote hundreds. Opera is a theatrical performance set to music.

Beautiful. Both the voice and guitar. Probably the best version I've ever heard. Wish the audio were in sync with the video though.
bravo, yes, but oh no, the first paragraph of the song is missing :(
+eurabio "Paragraph"
beautiful!!! Congratulations, I also sing this song with my guitarre player.
@o0OHermioneO0o Listen to her voice then say that :)

You can hear all the verses (sung by American soprano Julianne Baird) at th-cam.com/video/d4EmIPY8yqY/w-d-xo.html
video doesn't match the sound. Notwithstanding this is beautiful.
Why does she sit?
Low! It's a pity the first stanza is missing!
Hello Debora: This is Valeria writing, please check our CD on Spotify, there we have all 6 stanzas recorded!
this is nice, but i love Sting's version much more.
@Bassman911 actualy the song isn't dirty the orginal ong was about a woman who wasn't in love with a man and he says how he''ll die without her and how she is a bitch..this doesn't have the fulllyrics
most texts from that era had lots of very witty "double entendre"
I agree with all here that she sings it beautifully. I'd just say though that I can't hear any "old English" accent in her singing. Her accent sounds just like a perfect modern, standard english one to me (speaking as an English person)

Really? Cause I can understand every word.
hehehe, this song is so dirty!

Very nice but if I must comment I can't understand a word that is sung. The accent is too heavy. Stick with Italian.
c'est nul
