  • These fish act on a seemingly suicidal desire to breed out of water. The female grunion deposit eggs in the sand as far from aquatic predators as possible. The female excavates sand on the bead with her tail to deposit eggs, ready for the male grunion milt. The eggs remain buried in the wet sand and hatch in about 10 days, at which point the young grunion make their way back into the water.

The narrator says that "it starts with the females" when actually there are male scouts who come ashore about 20 minutes before the run. These scouts determine if the beach is suitable.
Also, the narrator acts as if the males choose females after they've reached the beach when in fact a number of males select a female to follow up onto the beach so that each females' eggs are fertilized by 3-4 different males.

I know that the grunion ( a small silver and blue fish) run between February and September when the tide is high up and down the California Coast and in Mexico as well. The waves bring in millions of fish - each wave is chock full and the females do a weird dance on their tail fins laying their eggs in the sand, while the males I guess, spew sperm over the eggs (?) Anyway - it's something to see, but like " red tide" it can also bring a stinky rotten egg smell with it, or maybe the two events are interlaced. Yeesh - I just can't recall! Anyway - it's possible - worth looking into - Certainly though red tide reeks of sulfur - it's really almost asphyxiating to have to smell it, however, the gorgeous view of the illuminated breaking waves is a sight everyone should see once in their life! Light sort of sparkles off the waves also, like mini fireworks while the rest of the breaker glows as mentioned above. Hoping the odor is associated with this, rather than with something more ominous.

John Starnes there’s a certain season where you’re allowed to collect them by hand if you have a fishing license, otherwise it’s illegal
