Metallurgy student here. While many steels have considerably better mechanical properties or corrosion resistance (among other characteristics) than 154CM, it’s important to remember that it’s a mass market steel aimed at the average consumer rather than at knife-collecting geeks. Affordability, availability and ease of maintenance are therefore important factors to consider. I have to acknowledge 154CM’s performance in those regards alongside its satisfactory performance in terms of its intrinsic properties such as hardness, toughness and corrosion resistance. "Well-rounded" is therefore a great qualifier for this steel.

Thank you for watching Paul! TC has life history working with metal and truly loves where it came from, how it was made, what is used for, and how it affects us each day!

154cm, especially from Pro-Tech is one of my favorite blade steels. So easy to put a scary edge on....

Kizer has been putting out some AMAZING 154cm knives in the 50 - 75 dollar range. My current favorite knife is the kizer invictus by damned designs. It's a flipper button lock with some of the best micarta scales I've seen with an awesome deep pocket clip. Amazing design that's super comfortable. The thing was SCARY sharp from the factory. Been using it daily for a few weeks now and is refusing to lose its edge. Paid only 60 bucks for this knife.

Just ordered my first 154cm blade. It's the LP by Kiser, for $37 on evil Amazon . You can't even get a vg10 for that. I've been a knife nerd for many years. You'd think I'd have a 154 by now. Heck, even my Benchmades have s30v

@@Gunrunner223 Be EXTREMELY careful with Amazon orders when it comes to knives. Even if it's under 50 bucks be sure to check the selling source. Counterfeiting has become horrible on Amazon over the past few years.
It is nice seeing 154cm finally being priced appropriately though. It's a great steel when heat treated properly. I've spent way too much on 154cm in the past, especially with all the different pro-techs I have in 154cm. I don't believe I have any Benchmade in that steel, do they even do 154cm anymore? All my Benchmade are s30v / s90v / m4

Easy to sharpen. Only need to go to a 600 grit stone before strop and it’s good to go. Love this steel

I have a off-grid Stryker XL and it's the 154 cm so far. I really like it. It holds an edge really well and it is easy to get it extra sharp .... Not brittle at all. Of course this is probably due to a proper heat treat and all of that good stuff

I do not have much experience with 154CM steel but I consider it the "All around ingot made stainless steel." It does not have many glaring strengths, but at the same time it does not have glaring weaknesses (for a stainless steel).

    So 154cm or d2
I’m trying to pick a knife the d2 of course is a bit cheaper knife. According to the blade steel chart at blade hq the d2 is stronger and has better edge retention but less corrosion resistance over the 154cm.

Could you talk about weights of steel? With a larger knife, they can carry more weight. But like Vanadium, VMC makes some fish hooks with Vanadium wire, it's lighter and strong. So, I'm curious if a Vanadium knife might be significantly lighter in a larger knife???

CPM 154 and 154 has basically no difference, tbh. Pro-Tech themselves said that they have about a 5% difference
Just shows you that it’s a good steel

We discontinued the weekly live shows at the beginning of the year as logistically they became undoable with everyones schedule. We still do a live show once a month, along with trying to bring you engaging, informative and entertaining content. Our staffing and departments have shifted somewhat to allow everyone to do the jobs they want and to allow some to work in other areas that they are passionate about. Thank you so much for enjoying our channel!

Saying "smoky mountains knife works" takes exactly as long as "s m k w". The abbreviation - like all that include a "W" - only makes sense in writing.

The 154CM blade on my Benchmade 154CM doesn,t hold its edge well. The edge is brittle I think. after one or two cutting chores, the blade will be dull somewhat, though it still cuts. I can feel the edge chipping. Oh, I sent an e-mail to Benchmade asking WTF with the edge, but they didn't respond. So no explanation from them. However, I did found a couple of people posted that their Benchmade 154CM blades were brittle. So, perhaps I bought a bad blade. Other than that it is an excellently designed knife, I am still EDCing daily it since bought new in 2008.

I have had quite a Few Benchmades over the Years and have never been impresses with their blades. They seem to lose their edges quick. I think THE HIGH PRICE is FOR THE NAME, Not MUCH QUALITY.
