Freezing your bag of rice as soon as you bring it home from the store and leaving it in the freezer for at least four days will kill the adult bugs and possibly their eggs. (freezer time may vary upon the research you do) It’s your personal choice what you fill your gnomes with. Just have fun making them!

You can also mix some food-grade diatomaceous earth in with the rice and it will kill any type of bugs and their eggs. It is non-toxic and I use it all the time. If it is windy, I cover my mouth when applying it because it is a fine powder. Also, I mix it with water and use it as a spray.

Inspiring video, thank you for sharing! I volunteer at a resale shop that helps support homeless women and children in my local area. I found most of all the things I needed at the store and made two of these little cuties today to sell. One of them didn't even make it out of the back room before another volunteer fell in love with it. Your video is so good that I had no trouble making them and they look absolutely adorable! Kudos to you!

I made these last year for gifts. Everyone enjoyed receiving them but one person was so upset that he didn't have eyes under his hat. She just couldn't understand why I would make something without a face. lol. If this seems to be an issue just glue or sew a couple of black seed beads for eyes. Thank you so much for this tutorial. Hugs and blessings

I watched a gazillion of these “how to make a gnome“ videos and yours is the first one that has ever emphasize the need to reinforce the rubber band, and you do it without using hot glue! You make a perfect example/argument for why you do this and you were absolutely correct, the rubber band will the grain, and glue will harden so that won’t necessarily work. Tying a string is ingenious!

Plastic poly pellets may be a much better option than the suggested rice, or as mentioned by others in this comments section - pea gravel, kitty litter, flour/cornmeal, or beans. No dust or bugs from the poly pellets! It also provides weight to the gnome.
If/when price is a concern (these poly pellets are slightly costly), (1) use discount programs &/or coupons to buy a bag of the pellets from JoAnn or hobby store, (2) use a combination of the poly pellets and the Styrofoam beads/pellets used for bean bag chairs... (use the poly pellets in the bottom third and the styro beads for the remaining 2/3 of the "body" of the gnome), (3) use loose batting to fill a portion of the "body" and stuff it down in the middle of the beads/pellets.
Another suggestion: if poly pellets are more $$ than you wish to expend on this project, but you still want to use a weighted filler, and you want to use the Styrofoam beads instead, consider buying (from a hardware store) some large washers or large nuts to place in the base of the "body" sock before or after adding a bit of the beads.

These little guys are adorable! One great point on Miriam's video - her voice is really nice. Many times in crafting videos, the women talk too loudly or have an unbearable accent - Miriam just seems like someone I'd like to be friends with. Thanks for this adorable idea! -- You could add little wire-rim glasses over his nose made from a large paper clip. :)
