    Your knowledge of pigments and the specific colors in the various brands continues to amaze me! Thank for the introduction to Alice Lim! Her way of charting pigments - table + Venn diagram - is one I haven't seen before and may do a lot to unscramble my thinking about the paints I already own - and what else to acquire. I really appreciate your focus - and Alice's - on how to mix to create similar results.

    Oh the Sky Blue shadows is not at all what I expected! And the PBk 11 seems warm to me so that is maybe why it made green?
    I've never bought the DS Cascade Green and of course we don't exactly know what PBr7 is in it, but I've tested various mixes and I thought Raw Sienna was the closest I could get. Denise Soden thinks maybe Raw Umber. The Taiga green does look very close. EDIT: I wonder if DS has another Raw Sienna type color that granulates? I mean, probably, because they have an entire page of earths on the dotcard... But it just occured to me to try mixing Cascade Green with a PY 42. I just got Raw Sienna Deep from DaVinci, it's a granulating PY 42 and a very interesting mixer! And also the Qor transparent Yellow Oxide. Now I want to mix colors!!

    A couple of these mixes would look great in a palette like the Jane Blundell palette where you have so many muted warm earth colors and sadly not a lot of cool muted colors. Jane Blundell herself made a mix of pbr7 and pb29 to go along with hers. There’s just not enough options to match earth colors in brands like Daniel smith or Roman Szmal, and I think that’s the reasoning here for this brand. It’s actually great when you think of it that way. That’s also why the cool colors in the DS genuine mineral line are so big, and here PBK11 pb29 is like sodalite genuine. A touch of yellow to the PBK11 pg6 would be like green apatite genuine.

    i ahve been using wh nights for nearly 30 years when i bought a yarka set and was very impressed. i just bought the granulating colors but for some reason did not see much granulation when i swatched them. perhaps i did not use enough water or have a large enough space for a swatch. i used a pre printed swatch book ???🤨

    • @PaintinHiding
      @PaintinHiding  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      firstly, pre-printed swatchbooks don't use the best paper for granulation. so try swatching on whatever you typically use to paint on ... with lots of water. alternatively, if you had bought tubes, it's possible that the pigments separated. within the ttube.. yes, it can happen.

    I agree both the Grey Rose Mist and Violet Mist are disappointing. The opaque Chromium oxide is not a very worthy replacement of Viridian which is transparent and full of life. I tried mixing Moonglow without the Viridian myself but saw no great success. Perhaps Hematite Mist is the only thing I love here.
    BTW, White Nights has launched PR209 as Quinacridone Scarlet.

    • @PaintinHiding
      @PaintinHiding  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's so true! chromium oxide is not just middle of the road semi-transparent but it's actually rather opaque, very opposite from viridian. oh yeah! hematite mist was a surprising one, i quite liked that as well.
      wait what really?! i love PR209! it's nice to see them continually adding more to their range. maybe one day they could add PB16, my fave haha~

    I´ve now a little palette with 12 full pans with awesome granulating highly pigmented colors
    from all of these 15 ... I´m thinking all these awesome spontan watercolor effekts and granulation can you get with the right dose water that you use, with more, or less from the color of your choise. I must practice this a little bit, how much from this, or this, and every picture that I create with these colors will be unique and pretty on his own wise :) ... in my other artists palette by white nights I´ve 3 colors that can granulate - burnt umber, cadmium red light and ultramarine ... use two granulating colors in combination and you can get a very interesting supergranulation ...
    I´ve a lot of fun with this stuff in artists quality from white nights by nevskaja palitra.

    Interesting! Daniel Smith has a Hematite Violet Genuine and Irit really loves it. It doesn't seem to look like the Hematite Mist here... but.. I might like this one better? Interesting how they took the Moonglow pigments and made various different shades from them! Daniel Smith also has a color called Ultramarine Turquoise, that is similar to Blue Mist here. Isn't it lovely?
    Wait - that's hot press? I am very surprised, since it seems to have texture - my hot presses are smooth like writing paper. But then Alice's dotcard looks like it has much more texture. I wouldn't use hot press for testing granulating colors, but it seemed ok here. I always like to tilt the paper when testing granulating colors, because you get the most granulation when water and pigment flows across the top of the paper. So I bet you can get them to granulate more, if you use rougher paper and tilt it when wet.
    I always tend to agree that mixing these oneself is more fun. Then you can get all sort of color variation within it too.

    • @PaintinHiding
      @PaintinHiding  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      normally i wouldn't use hot press to test granulation either but yeah, as you can see, it still has texture to it. fabriano hot press is much more smooth than this. so despite this being "hot press" it's really between a cold and hot press. and i decided to use this instead of regular cold press because i wanted to print this chart to save time on writing out all the info. hot press is better for printing since cold press has more tooth.
