    The scan visor telling you how a space pirate met its end is an example of something they didn't need to do but is such a perfect touch. Flavor text and lore/world building of this caliber is most fans wet dream to be wholly immersed into the world and understanding the setting and the rules of its universe. Id love to see more games (especially horror) make a return to adding these little details that go a long way to bridging the gap between the medium and the player

    my mom died the day after this was released at 3am in the morning, she got me into video games with Metroid Prime and Sonic Heros on gamecube, i miss her so much but everytime i play the roms i have (lost all the stuff she got me to thieves but i still have the games because of rom sites) i flash back to a happier simpler time. Metroid Prime was often the first game alot of kids born in the 90's got with a gamecube, i still remember when we both played mario party on the gamecube, never a dull moment. Gamecube games were 60% of my childhood along with anime, books, and Metallica. RIP mom you were always cool

    I was one of the naysayers who was disappointed when it was revealed that it was going to be a first person game. Then it came out and got amazing reviews and it became one of my favorite games of all time. One of the rare stories in video game stories where criticism turned into an amazing game instead of a hyped game ending up mediocre.
    I also like the original controls. Is it good for an FPS? No, but it's perfect for Metroid.

      @@flamekaizer8476 Considering he hasnt answered, ill take my shot in the dark. The game being an FPS at the time would definitely come off as nintendos attempt to appeal to the FPS commumity, so most people were probably expecting an fps with linear level structure with an action focus and minimal exploration. Basically, people were unhappy that nintendo was turning metroid into call of duty.

    Maybe it's because like you mentioned in the video, I too spent years getting used to the 'Cube's tank controls, but I genuinely prefer them to the Wii trilogy version. Whenever I get the itch to revisit Primes 1 and 2 (they're among my absolute favourite games), I always go back to the original versions.
    Also, I agree on the flavour text in the scan logs. They add SO MUCH to the atmosphere. I love how much of a badass you feel when you're scanning a console in one of the labs and it essentially reads: "terrible news everyone, the Hunter has arrived on Tallon IV".

  • @ExtremeAce

    Man I adore the Prime Trilogy. Even if Prime 2 is my favorite game of all time, this game has a special place in my heart. The first time I booted it up and listening to the title theme I got chills...just sat down and listened to it for a good 5-10 minutes. And then they hit me with the menu theme! Another 5 minutes just listening to that lol. Even though it's been a while and through replays I see some issues with the game I still love it and it's easily one of my favorite games of all time.

    4:12 Honestly, I always felt the original Metroid Prime was the only game that felt right on that controller. Like the game's controls were built around the GameCube controller, and not squeezed into it, like most other games felt. It's still much better when you can use the right control stick to move the camera (with mouselook, etc via emulation), but the original controls still worked great at the time.

    • @kippgames
      @kippgames 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I agree up until mouse look and right stick control. Trilogy while better accurate was clunky just like the original and it was perfect but something so smooth like mouselook kinda killed the vibe I had from the game and didn’t think it suited metroid, I don’t mind people using it and enjoying it but as someone who loves the orginal and plays a lot of shooters it just doesn’t feel right to me

    • @shsrpr
      @shsrpr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kippgames I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say. You don't think it plays well with a standard controller using the right stick to aim? You'd rather be stuck standing still in order to move the camera around and aim like it was on GameCube? Or you'll only play the Trilogy version using the Wiimote as was intended?
      I personally thought it was excellent on the GameCube in its time. And I enjoyed being able to use the Wiimote in the Trilogy version, but I still preferred the original control scheme over it. But now I definitely prefer it on a standard controller (PS5 controller is what I use) and being able to move around freely while aiming (still use Lock-on though). I customized the controls to my liking in the Primehack/Dolphin emulator, and ended up playing through Prime 1 & 2 three times each (once on each difficulty level) and I loved it.

    • @kippgames
      @kippgames ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shsrpr sorry I worded that poorly, I don’t like many of the modern control schemes and prefer both the Wii and GameCube controls. I think retro really took into account the controls and gameplay together and that’s why I feel the original control schemes for both the Wii and GameCube (including the changes u can do in-game for each version).
      I think it plays well with modern control schemes but to me, it kills the pace and design of the original versions (GameCube and Wii) but I respect those who prefer to play on it because at the end of the day it’s still a stellar designed game regardless of how people play it and that’s what matters most

    My friend let me run the Prime trilogy on his Wii in high school. He told me, after I had gotten all the artifacts, that he had to used a GUIDE to find them. It wasn't that hard to pick that it lists an element 9/10 times in the hints, and that it says what room they are in. Yeah, I get it, if you're super casual about playing, it doesn't occur that you can just scan and look at the full map to see what room it says in the hint, but c'mon! I didn't need a guide for ANY OF THEM. It's tedious, yes, but necessary to come back

At the time I got my first Wii, and after beating Prime 3. Which was my first Metroid game. I was hooked and wanted to play the other games in the trilogy. So I bought the GameCube version of Prime 1, I was a thrown off a bit cause of how it controls, but I soon got use to it and I couldn't stop playing the game. I ended up getting the Trilogy version on the Wii as well, cause I liked how Prime 3 controlled. To this day I still don't know what my prefer way of controlling the game is. I was recommended this video on the day of itsurelease out of the blue. I've since watched all of your Metroid reviews so far. Loving it!

    Before watching the video, I would like to establish how insane it is that I love this game. I only began playing the series when Dread came out, and have adored the 2D series SO MUCH. Playing Zero Mission, AM2R, Samus Returns, Super, Fusion, and Dread really gave me an appreciation for a series and genre I had only seen in passing before.
    However, First Person games are not my favorite. I didn't grow up with any (excluding Minecraft, which I find a bit different), and I personally find the perspective both confusing to navigate in and frustrating to fight in, given that you can't look independent of movement.
    However, this channel changed that, by getting me interested in Half Life 1, which led me to playing and adoring Portal 1 and 2, and increasing my fanboyness for the Metroid Franchise as a whole. I finally had enough experience in the genre and series to give this one a fair shake. By playing on the Wii, I could get some of the best controls a console FPS has ever had, and I was simply blown away by it.
    I've never truly experienced a game so... IMMERSIVE. I beat the game in a week, getting 77% without a guide in 8 hours, never wanting to put the game down. Hell, my older brother watched me play 90% of it, and he was even more immersed than I was! I found the controls fun (once I found the Free-Aim toggle), the upgrades were cool, the bosses were super intimidating, and while I was frustrated from time to time trying to navigate and fight certain enemies (looking at the ALL of the Metroids in the game), I never rage quit, I just kept playing, completely in love and immersed in Tallon IV.
    I cannot wait to see your perspective on the title. I was born in 2003, so I could never have seen the pre-release backlash, and being such a new fan, I can't imagine how much it matters to a fan who played many of the games at the time of release. I know that's how Dread feels for me, anyway. Okay, time to actually watch the video. Let's do this, okay... WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
    Apologies to anyone who clicked on this comment, but I like re-watching these videos to think about certain games. Something I thought would be cool would be to document my feelings watching the video the first time. What I learned, my first experience with the game myself, that sorta thing. Just thought it would be cool for later. Sorry it's so MASSIVE. Not disappointed at all about a Part 2, I think it's a great idea with how in-depth and informative the video is. I've been glued to my seat the whole time.
    Edit 1: Immediately had no idea about the lore changes, which is crazy, given that I actually loved the Scan Visor more than I thought I would because of the lore. Especially the portion of the Space Pirates attempting to bootleg Samus' abilities. I'm gonna need to look into what was changed in the Wii release.
    Edit 2: I did try the controls of the GC original, but just couldn't get into them. I'm already mediocre with Mouse & Keyboard and just okay with Twin Stick. The N64 FPS play style was simply beyond my comprehension. Also, your forehead isn't THAT big, c'mon.
    Edit 3: You can't just hit me with the [you've got mail], I was wheezing for a whole minute. I definitely find the Map in Prime to be understandably divisive, but is something I adapted to very quickly for one reason. I've been messing with Blender a lot lately, and have gotten used to manipulating and viewing 3D objects and wire-frames. I will admit that the map does struggle at points, almost kinda wish it split into multiple maps for each area, like Phendrana Drifts Vs. Edge, the different floors of the mines, etc.
    Edit 4: I do think that Ridley attacking Samus in the Frigate would've been a better way to lose all here powers, but that's just me. What I'm more infuriated on is how I didn't notice the tiny butt shake animation. Whoever took the time for that deserves a cookie. OH GOD, I'M A ZOOMER!
    Edit 5: I find the hint system to be a life saver! Without it, I would've needed a notebook and an online guide to find some areas on Tallon IV, especially certain half pipes, I just couldn't notice them. Yes, it gets a bit annoying when it repeats hints, and I do wish it was tweaked to not do that. Just PERMANENTLY marking the ? on your map is enough for most to remember where you need to go.
    EDIT 6: THERE'S A F**CKING RADAR IN THE TOP LEFT!? I died 10 times to the Ram War Wasps, and could only win once turning off Free Aim when locked on, and even then, I BARELY scraped by. I almost quit the game because of it! OOOOOOO, I'm playing it again!!!
    Edit 7: Yes, I did fall for the whole "Furnace Hint Disappearing thing," which is actually a small reason why I'm big on the hint system, so long as the ? is PERMANENT. Or at least an option for that. I also didn't notice the quieter noise indicator for items, yet still got 77% of items, which I'm very proud of.
    Edit 8: Also never noticed the slight difference in Varia Design vs. Screw Attack, which is just nifty! I didn't play it but I'm gonna assume that the elevators could crash the GC or maybe delete saves? I'm not sure. I just can't wait for my favorite enemy to show up, the Triclops! They're SO CUTE, and I didn't even know you could influence them with bombs... I've GOTTA play this game again...
    Edit 9: Ah, the Chozo Artifacts. It's funny, I was exploring so much for upgrades and for fun, that I found 6 of these without even trying, only needing to backtrack for the other 6, and only needing a guide for the STUPID ONE IN PHENDRANA'S EDGE. I actually saw a Reddit Post about the different hand poses and found it super neat!

    You technically CAN aim while moving, you just have to use the momentum while jumping to do so-
    (moving foward and jumping then aiming)

    wow, when you know the: "use the radar tool we gave you" hack, makes the war wasp fight far less frantic. Good that it is clearly visible and a certain person didn`t just realize it even exists. great video btw. Also going to use MP music in my next Starfinder campaign.

    To be 100% honest, this is my first TravGuy video experience, and man is it great to hear a fellow Metroid Prime lover gush about the lore in these games.
    I still think Echoes' Sky Temple Key hunt was worse than the artifact hunt in here though, but great job with both parts regardless. I had a laugh.

    Great review, Trav!
    Also, for your question at 49:10 - yes, I definitely do know. My game would only ever lock up when I was going back UP that first elevator (Tallon Overworld/Chozo Ruins). Whenever I needed to go back to my gunship, I'd always hit a save room first, or take the long way around.

    I'm emberassed to admit that during my first playthrough of this game, I somehow missed the charge beam and ended up collecting super missiles first.
    Also, I never found the map room for the Chozo Ruins until I had already filled out every single room on my own during the artifact hunt.

    i dont think theres ever been better timing in my LIFE! yo, ive had this game since i was like 4 years old, and ive always been scared shitless of it because of its atmosphere and the way it sounds. however, recently, after seeing a shit ton of great things said about the game, i picked it up. after 14 years of the game torturing me, i finally started actually playing it. and i fucking love it. im already 15 hours in, and i started it the SAME DAY you uploaded this video. that kinda timing is just unheard of. i waited 14 years just to be told by the universe "yeah youre gonna fucking love this game bro" lmfao

    Now, I see why people would have problems with Metroid being an fps especially with things like the grapple beam, space jump, screw attack, and the speed booster. But still, are you kidding me? Metroid fans then didn’t think that experiencing the mission through Samus’ eyes wouldn’t have been the coolest thing Nintendo could have done for the series?

    “How big we’re these Chozo? Did they need morph balls to get through the doors?” Actually, those doors were brought here by the pirates. That’s why both the pirate ship and planet use the same kind of doors, not just developer laziness. Look at the door frames on the planet, they have out of place metallic bulkheads and wires artificially inserted into the stone architecture.

    Hey Trav, small correction, the suit in Dread isn't the origonal fusion suit. That's what suit looks like way after Fusion as it's biomechanical and is starting to regenerate its lost parts that were cut away during the surgery to save Samus

Just imagine they have like 50 stingers stacked into each other in their butts and all their critical stuff is in their torso.

    I'm in the rare breed where Prime 1 is the least favorite of the trilogy and Prime 3 is my main fave. And yet Prime 1 is still one of my fave games of all time because it's still so good! All three games are so insanely good.
