    Here's a little backstory you might find interesting.
    (Swiss001 - you may want to mention this on a future video too)
    From the beginning, the market for a 3-engine wide-body aircraft was expected to be very small and a huge financial gamble for any company. If there was any competition from a rival company, it meant neither company was likely to make money because they would both have to spend a lot to compete but not be able to sell enough planes to pay for all the development costs. Boeing knew this fact, and so did Convair, North American etc. That;s why they didn't even bother. In fact, In reality, all the major plane makers wanted to do a twin-engine plane... but the engines of the late 1960s didn't make enough power for such a large aircraft.
    But that's a whole 'nother story about the A300 and 767 etc. that wouldn't come out until about a decade later.
    The fact is, the Lockheed L-1011 was all original, and WAY better engineered than a DC-10. Douglas simply slapped the DC-10 together cheaply in order to compete. And then, to compensate for band-aid engineering, they slashed the price -- and practically gave them away in order to steal the market from Lockheed. Chronologically speaking, the only reason the L-1011 was generally entering service AFTER the DC-10 was because Rolls Royce who made their engines basically went Bankrupt and didn't tell anyone what was happening until they were out of business -- and then it took about 2 years for Rolls Royce to get the brand new engines in production. In fact, many people still think this was the real reason the DC-10 initially sold well in comparison to the L-1011. (You have to admit, 2 years is an eternity to wait for a new product when there's a cheap substitute ready with no waiting.)
    American (who basically launched the L-1011 project with their request for a 250 seat mid-range jet) got a bad taste of Karma after they decided to get Lockheed against Douglass's cheaper plane. Initially, American signed up with the DC-10 with a cheaper package deal and saved a little money. And when American changed their order from L-1011s to get DC-10's instead, a few other airlines also went with the DC-10. It worked out for American in the short run. Until People started dying from cut corners and bad engineering choices. That's why the DC-10 got it's cute little nickname; the "Death-Cruiser 10".
    It turns out, that while the L-1011 was getting a slow start, the DC-10 was already busy with a string of crashes with American airlines, Turkish airlines, American again, and later on, United airlines. It should be noted that although there were 2 crashes of L-1011's and a few incidents that took place on the ground, ZERO L-1011s ever CRASHED because of a design defect. This is not something that the DC-10 can claim - nor it's descendant the MD-11. (Not even mentioning the regular DC-10 crashes, just look up DC-10/MD-11 landing bounce crashes on TH-cam for example... yikes.)
    The critical thing to remember is that Douglass had a better marketing strategy but a crappier product. Even the 2nd generation (the MD-11) failed to live up to design promises and lots of airlines sold their MD-11s in as little as 2 years. Douglas might have produced more planes and forced Lockheed to leave the airline industry, but in the end, their strategy backfired on them too. They couldn't come up with any REAL innovative products or new ideas. They fialed to create new segments or to properly challenge existing products (like the 757, 767, A300/A310/A330/A340 family, ANY regional jets or 747/A380 size aircraft etc.)
    In the end, Douglas died a slow death and got bought out by Boeing in the 90s. And although Lockheed doesn't make the L-1011 they DO still exist, as Lockheed-Martin and they're busy making some of the most advanced, futuristic classified aircraft (and even spacecraft) mankind has ever created.
    And for the record, if you ask anyone old enough to remember traveling on a DC-10 and L-1011, hands-down, they will tell you there is no comparison. The TriStar was breath of fresh air and it is painfully missed by countless aviation fans around the world. From its endless pioneering technology behind the scenes, it's silky-smooth automatic landing systems its ingenious flight kitchens that were hidden under the main floor, the huge comfortable seats --and most importantly-- the massive, wide-open spacious cabin... NOTHING was as innovative or luxurious back then as the L-1011.
    And while the DC-10 had a few fans (aside from the Fed-EX guys, of course) it was definitely not a remarkable product, other than deadly design flaws and happening to get a little more market share of an already overcrowded segment (for the reasons already covered above.)
    # TriStars forever!

    Most failed? Hardly. What about the Mercure, the Yun10 and the Concorde? The first 2 had a production run of less than 10 planes. The last fared only slightly better with less than 20 copies made. There were 250 Tristars built. Not too shabby considering there was intense rivalry from the DC10 and serious disruption from the bankruptcy of the Tristar's engine supplier, Rolls Royce.

    The only fail in the Tristar was that too few airlines wanted to pony up for its advancements. The plane was an engineering marvel and had a ridiculous safety record compared to other wide bodies

  • @cockatoo010
    @cockatoo010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The L-1011 failed due to Rolls Royce being ass and overpromising and under-delivering and having the engines delayed.
    And due to Douglas rushing the DC-10 to market so they snatched all the orders that the Tristar could have got.
    I'd love to see Lockheed martin making another airliner, it's kinda stale with just Boeing in the US making airliners

  • @pointerprideaviationandtra4751
    @pointerprideaviationandtra4751 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Actually the L-1011 was decently successful. It was a bit more fuel efficient than the DC-10 was. The only problem was it was expensive to maintain due to how many advancements were put into it by Locheed.

    In 1977 I took a flight on Eastern's L-1011-1. I was around 14 at the time, and we were heading back from Miami, going back to my hometown in Salt Lake City, Utah. The takeoff was surprisingly quiet, I flew in the md-11, the L-1011 was way quieter. The experience was Comfortable, and more spacious than many other airliners. Even Coach was great. The experience was overall very good! I would prefer it more than modern airliners today.

    The plane did not crash a lot, I believe there were two actual crashes neither were at the fault of the plane itself. Both weather related. And it was actually a very good plane from a reliability and piloting aspect. DC-10 was just cheaper and came out first due to the Royce delay. And it was actually the first plane to fly a route completely automated from take-off to landing. It was not common practice and was done once without passengers but it was capable of it

    On these small runways instead of rolling and wasting runway while the engines spool up you should hold the brakes while spooling up, so you don't start the takeoff roll until your engines are already at full power.
