  • I put food safe finishes to the test with various experiments to see which food safe finish can withstand heat and moisture and more. Stick around for the bonus test I did at the end of this video that no one else is doing! The results completely surprised me! Let me know what you think in the comments, and hit SUBSCRIBE to see more awesome content from us!
    Here is the list of finishes that I used and links for each product:
    1. (Control sample)
    2. HOWARD'S WAX-IT-ALL: amzn.to/3HVZlfv
    3. MINERAL OIL: amzn.to/3HWPQwS
    4. WALRUS OIL: amzn.to/3hK8ywO
    5. SHELLAC: amzn.to/3hJC4mn
    6. RAW LINSEED OIL: amzn.to/3PMjYNe
    7. *TUNG OIL: amzn.to/3GcjlJw
    8. *D-LIMONENE: amzn.to/3WhUJF1
    And, just in case someone needs a left-handed spatula: amzn.to/3FMtATt
    (Just because not all these finishes withstood my testing doesn't mean they don't have other great uses, I use many of these finishes for other projects that don't require heat or moisture and they work great! Also, while every finish I used is food safe, some people may have allergic reactions or other medical reasons why they shouldn't use certain wood finishes. I am not a doctor, food expert, or even an expert on wood finishes or their ingredients. Please do your own research to find what's right for you.)

    I've used walnut oil for over 40 years on wooden utensils with great success!

      Yes! I definitely should've added both walnut and Danish oil to this video! I'll have to play around with them next, thanks!

    Ive found that walnut oil is the answer. It polymerizes fairly quickly when exposed to UVA and UVB light (sunlight), air flow, and if possible low heat. Also to avoid cracks and checking heat up the oil (NOT THE WOOD!!) and it will be penetrate very well.

      Olive Oil can go rancid as well. Best to try Coconut oil if you want something a cooking oil.

    Thanks, that's such a useful video.. I've been testing out finishes myself, but was reluctant to try tung oil because of the curing time.. guess I'll have a rethink 🙂

    I agree but 13:20 warning should be much earlier I felt. Don't use cooking oils, most will go rancid. But Shellac is used in foods and we all have eaten it. Also maple is a good wood choice.

    Preheating the wood help the oils to penitrate the wood

    Awesome! I appreciate this video immensely! I learned the value of tung oil from others on TH-cam (specifically for cutting boards, in my case), but application details have been rather vague! A 50/50 dilution for the first coat for penetration, and then following up with pure tung oil makes sense, and is so much easier then some of the other "recipes" I've seen. Especially those that involved waiting 2-4 weeks between coats!!!!! :o( Also, I found that diluting with orange oil (specifically Nature's Orange) really turns all woods much darker, to the point where maple starts to resemble cherry, or raw walnut! I won't use that again!!
    Thank you!

    How long did you let the raw linseed oil cure for?

    • @BrevaCreative
      @BrevaCreative  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I let all of them sit for about 30 days. Applied all finishes at once, then waited for the tung to cure the full 30 days before experimenting on any of them. Thanks for watching! 💚

    • @LitoGeorge
      @LitoGeorge 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BrevaCreative very interesting. I've seen my example of raw linseed oil plasticising over that period of time on metal and wood, so its weird to see it break down that much. The tung oil is the business, but oh so very expensive for the real deal. Particularly up here in the frozen north.

    • @BrevaCreative
      @BrevaCreative  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LitoGeorge surprised me too, definitely thought the linseed would've performed better than it did.

      @@BrevaCreative I think I will redo your test. Maybe coat twice too, 24hrs apart, or even a week apart. I dont know. Dont hold me to it, but I'll figure out a way to test the heat, washing, etc longevity of the linseed. I got a great big honking can of it, so the tung oil is out for now. If I remember after 60 days or whatever, I'll share my findings here :)

    Out of curiosity, hows the finish jolding up after 9 months? Any issues?

    • @BrevaCreative
      @BrevaCreative  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No issues here! Tbh, I did toss these samples a month or two back, but when I tossed them I did notice the tung oil ones still had that same sheen! 🙂

      @@BrevaCreative Nice to see a content creator respond to the audience. You of course didn’t need to do anything if you didn’t want to but I also respect you for taking what the comment said to heart and applied it to later vids.
      What’s really sad is that the original commenter didn’t make his response, which is just extremely rude in my opinion.
