Great video, man. As a Christian myself, I've seen so many over the top comments about how ALL movies are sinful. As you stated in the video, that's far from the truth. Movies are a perfect gateway into learning and appreciating more about God and faith, and can get you more curious about researching his word. Even the general outline of stories are very much based on The Bible (having the oldest stories in existence), with a character starting out in a bad place, only to eventually learn from their mistakes and becoming a better person. Obviously like you said, some movies should be avoided, but ultimately, if a movie makes you reflect in a good way, then that's a very good thing. Great job as always!
Thanks, man! Yeah, I hear what you're saying about fellow Christians hesitant to engage with movies (especially horror, which is another subject I'm going to tackle in a video eventually), but it really is a missed opportunity for worship. I try to emphasize with Christians that movies are just another way of conveying our experiences through fictional stories, and although many times what is displayed onscreen isn't helpful, to disengage with movies entirely is itself a risky position - because no doubt movies have a massive influence on our culture. If we wanted to trace back why our culture is the way it is these days, I think a big part of it is because Christians have far too often disengaged with cultural influences like movies, so it's important for us to find the good in them and to also call out evil when we see it.
Absolutely I love that, a person that becomes who they are supposed to be. Even movies that are like teaching you there lives. I love thrillers but I choose ones not so much blood. Like thy neighbour Christian movie, parts can be scary but the message turns out for Good. Lessons in how to love our neighbours, beautiful mind, how he his wife overcome the illness, his still ill but chooses to accept it. Coaching films, after school specials bring good moral lessons. Jess x
As a born again Christian thankfully holy spirit can lead me out of temptation, but my flesh wants to look at edgy lusty things, I have need of help. But definitely I get alot out of movies, Jesus uses the films. It's just obeying holy spirit not my flesh. Hard but worthit 😊❤Jess
Thank you; you've beautifully articulated a lot of thoughts and feelings I've had for a while as a Christian filmmaker who is not necessarily interested in making explicitly Christian-branded films. I'm also a fan of your shorts; i discovered your channel a while ago but forgot to subscribe and only just now rediscovered it. subscribed now.
There are tons of lessons about life in movies…and just stories in general. I can’t count how many times I’ve reveled in the metaphorical relevance of The Matrix.
Agree 100%. I think this is especially true for Christian Filmmakers. Watching secular films helps us keep a pulse on society's philosophies and in better understanding that, helps us to better address contemporary issues in our own films. Also, this helps us to better develop our art. Just as filmmakers study other filmmakers, so Christian filmmakers should study secular filmmakers because this can help us with developing our own voice and with making Christian themed films more relevant and more respected. Most secular audiences don't respect an on the nose sermon, but they will respect a well crafted film that has a unique perspective and voice.
Absolutely! I think you're exactly right that we should spend time studying secular films and learn from their approach. I often find the "Christian movie" is only reaching Christian audiences (which is fine) but a more impactful approach is to provide a less on the nose sermon in a film. Subtlety, subtext, and themes are the way to go as long as it doesn't go too far... I'm actually working on another video that talks about this very thing so stay tuned!
I like some lifetime movies, it's upsetting in scenes perhaps sexual, but the story where the mum fights for her daughter she has illness, has such resilience. College school films. Lord of the rings I got alot of that, jesus my king, the hero's of Sam, aragon.
What about your perspective on watching and/or making horror films as a Christian. I personally don't watch horror films that blatantly blaspheme God or Jesus. But there are many other horror films that dont do this, many that are metaphors for issues that people go through and that show a siginficant and meaningful character transformation. But I'm still processing how watching horror films can be justified.
Great question! I'll likely make a video going into more depth on this very topic because I know horror films are controversial in the Christian community. I would agree the VAST majority of horror movies are blasphemous or should be avoided.... That being said, I think it comes down to the filmmaker's intention and how/why they chose to convey the "horror" (which is, admittedly, hard to determine). If a filmmaker makes a horror film where it's main purpose is to just scare audiences... then, yeah, I think that's a bad intention. But like you mentioned, if a filmmaker can convey metaphors and meaning that uses horror as a way to convey that message, then I think that's perfectly fine. What I like about the use of horror in a film (when done appropriately) is that it's the closest representation of sin and evil. It's the most effective way to showcase how horrific the world (and sometimes hell) becomes without God. Anyway, I have so many thoughts on this subject that I definitely plan on making a video that goes into more depth about this.
I struggle wondering especially my lust, but some I really think can help morality, story lines are like parable. I love BEAUTIFUL Mind but there's parts I have to skip any sexual bit. ❤Jesus help me choose right Jess xxx
@@danicaburger-iy4wf I haven’t seen VD so I can’t speak to that show in particular, but I can say there have been a few shows where I really liked the characters and story but ultimately stopped watching because of the content. If you’re conflicted about it, I’d err on the side of caution and avoid it until you can discern whether it’s appropriate or not to watch that show.
Hi I used to watch that show usually when I had depression which is no coincidence. The film producers also admitted to using real witchcraft spells in the show for realistic effects, overall my advice would be to pray on this and to ask for conviction from the holy spirit, however i think its pretty clear that any show that's surrounded by death, witches, demonic rituals, vampires and werewolves is not spiritually edifying for anyone, let alone a Christian.
I'm surprised and disappointed you neglected to include "The Name of the Rose" in your parade of movies. I find this film to be one of the most incriminating of religion in general, and Christianity specifically. If a christian wants to derive lessons from a movie, this movie should be at the top of their list.
I wasn’t necessarily trying to include a specific list of movies, but I was trying to stick to showing movies I’ve seen before and I haven’t heard of that one tbh. Will look into it!
I mean I imagine my future babies watching these things especially American psycho, I give myself the question “well you wouldn’t allow them to watch certain stuff till older” and I assume others would say that same thing. But then I can say, “Jesus tells us to be more like the children though” it seems your argument works but mine does too. So where is the stop and what would Jesus do and want us to do especially by learning his word? I take this into question “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; It shall not cleave to me.” Psalm 101:3 KJV and a few other verses like this, the Bible has stories too, but they’re true to lead to Jesus. So yes movies can teach what’s right and wrong, but they also can really harm us especially worldly people. I get completely what you’re saying, but these verses turn it into a contradiction. You also didn’t add any Bible verses, but I did..and that’s what makes me question more. Today I felt more conviction on what I should play and watch a week or so after realizing Halloween is sinful and Jesus wouldn’t celebrate it, and idolizing Santa in Christmas and playing games like dead by daylight and watching movies like dead by daylight and demons overtaking humans in horror movies. Demons aren’t like movies anyways, demons and satan come clothed in light and things that flatter us to deceive. This isn’t to convince or anything, I’m still learning and waiting. I am just a daughter of God trying my best to honor Jesus as we should and learn and remind myself that these things on earth are temporary and Jesus and hell is eternal. Judas put his flesh first and it got him nowhere even with the faith he had which wobbled around with pride which caused blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
Watching your video says a lot about your Christian life. What you are doing is using God's word to defend your sin. Whatever you watch or see affects your spirit and mind. Secular movies may look innocent, but they are not. The devil is cunning like a serpent. A true Christian should watch things that glorify God, such as Christian and godly movies. Don't be fooled; Jesus is not mocked.
I think we agree more than your comment seems to infer, but I think we might disagree on what constitutes as a "godly" movie or story. For example, the Bible is the word of God, but it features stories that contain many heinous acts of evil (including the torture of Jesus on the cross)... Jesus's own parables are also dark sometimes, such as in Luke 16:19 'The Rich Man and Lazarus." I agree that Christians should always carefully discern what they watch and how it affects their spirit / mind, but sometimes God's glory can be found in a story without ever mentioning God.
It is hard to take the path less traveled. But my path is one God has set before me :) thank you for this Dillon
