I love the London version, it just flows so smoothly. Dunno why Mistoffollees sings it in the Broadway version. The third version is nicer, the chaos suits the characters. it's a shame they cut half the song in the 98 movie.
This is the original 80s version of the song, albeit a teensy bit more sinister. The upbeat 90s version of the song is the best in my opinion, if that’s the one u were referring to
I've only gotten myself to watch this scene in full exactly one time. Funny enough, I watched this scene to try and give the movie a chance because this is my favorite number. You can imagine how that went.
For anybody wondering (of for anybody who doesn't want to scroll through the comments/lh), this version of the song is from the original version back in 1981 or smthn, I forgot the timeline. But yea, I was upset for, like, 2 minutes, but then realized "ohhhhh, it's the original version! That makes more sense"
To everyone bashing the song's tune, it's actually the very first version of it from the London productions...I found including it to be a neat callback, though it WAS jarring, admittedly, being used to the version everyone uses now.
I really wanted to hate this version of the song because I'm so accustomed to the one we all know (from Cats 1998, used in most modern productions now), but, honestly... I actually like this version quite a bit. Hate Cats 2019, but I like the tempo to this version, and the sort of "old-timey London criminal" vibe this gives off. I think it suits the characters well. Makes sense that this isn't objectively terrible, since I guess this was the original version of the song.
I had no predisposition I only know that I saw an exemplary performance by a youth theatre which triumphed over this. And most definitely, this particular Victoria never says "'orrible' quite correctly
I still like the 98 version better but after hearing this a few times it’s grown on me. At least it’s not on the level of gumbie cat or bustopher jokes
before you dismiss this version completely, just listen to the original 1981 version its the same tune pretty much but its fun and jazzy instead of the worst thing ever
I think the weirdest thing about this scene is that they decided to make the pair calico cats instead of tiger striped cats. Given how rare male calicos are, it doesn't make sense. Not to mention they were tiger striped cats purposely because the song talks about how the owners sometimes couldn't tell them apart. It's easy to tell calicos apart. Just one, in a sea, of weird changes this movie decided to make.

People on Broadway are able to jump sing and fight while singing and it sounds stable and well defined. All through this dumpster fire it sounds like they are all out of breath, and like they missed the last 20 years of vocal lessons. This is bad.
What I love most about this version of Cats are Andrew Lloyd Webber finally finding the actress who is both a Classical Prima Ballerina, like Victoria and a Lyrical Prima Donna, like Jemima, aka Syllabub and Victoria's very own song to go with her backstory.
I watched this movie first and i enjoyed it, but then i went to watch the original and this song was one of my favorites of the original, so i came back after a year or so of not seeing it and they absolutely ruined it. 😭
