Though this has some unique charm to it (im not denying this movie is a mess) but it still missing the "magical" feelings from when you watch the original play
@@beccaberry688 Yes but on stage it's Tugger who sings it, because there is so much dancing on Misto's part that it's impossible to sing and dance at the same time
To me this song is more melancholic than anything. The Broadway version is more joyful. Here the characters sound like they are whispering most of the time.
I could just HEAR the people behind the scenes thinking "I KNOW we made Ken Page crawl out on his hands and knees under the red cover when Misto did his magic to bring Old Deuteronomy back, but HOW are we going to get Dame Judi Dench....who is 85 yrs old and wearing this insanely big and heavy fur coat, to do that? Let's just have her appear behind the cats when Misto does his song and call it a day." lol
One of the biggest mistakes they made with Misto is not casting a professional dancer to play the part, Misto had the biggest and most difficult dance in the entire show, in the play you'll notice Misto barely sings, ofc he sings along with the ensemble and has a couple of lines in different songs, like jellical cats or rum tum tugger, but he's not belting out any solos or anything like that and that is because he is not a singer, the role of Misto has always been made for a dancer.
I mean, OBC Misto sang 'Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer' and tag-teamed this song with RTT. And in the latest revival versions they basically do it as a duet. For the really intense dance solo everyone just shuts up and lets him dance, but while how much he sings depends on the actor, anyone in a legit production should really be able to do both. Or, in the case of this miserable plop of instant mashed potatoes, he could do neither. The one small mercy is that they cut out the five minutes of instrumental where he *should* be dancing, rather than make this poor inept boy struggle through as badly (or more likely worse) as he did the singing...
No disrespect to this cast but, this does not even come close to the 1998 version of the song, I almost cried on that version because of how emotionally powerful it was.
If you, like me, got acquainted with two films (1998 and 2019) at the same time, then perhaps you would understand how much the last film is better than the first in almost all respects.
@@АндрейМинаев-и2щ Pray HOW is this film better than the original one? It COMPLETELY misses the WHOLE POINT of the story....which is that Grizabella DESPERATELY WANTS the other Jellicles to touch her and accept her back into the group. In the original, they make it a point to show that all the other Jellicles DO show affection and connection by physical touch....but every time when the kittens try to reach out for Grizabella, one of the older cats STOPS THEM. She's not allowed. Its only at the very end, when Victoria, herself, reaches out to Grizabella....WITH OLD DEUTERONOMY'S BLESSING to do so, and she finally makes that connection and touches Grizabella's hand, that she is allowed to rejoin the Jellicles. When Victoria reaches out for her in the new movie and Grizabella RECOILS, it TOTALLY breaks her character, because SHE WOULD NOT DO THIS. It also misinterprets several of the other characters. Bustopher Jones, for example....in the original, he is a classy, distinguished cat who prides himself on being well-fed. In this one, he stuffs his face and he almost seems ASHAMED of his size. Rum Tum Tugger, as well....while this one TRIES to be sexy, John Partridge in the original OOOOZES the sexuality and charm and energy in both his song AND this song and Old Deuteronomy song. He has a clear character arc....yes, he's the suave, handsome ladies man, but he's also a son who loves his father and is devoted to his clan. I didn't see the second part in this one. He did ONE SONG and then fades into the background until Macavity.
@@CeltycSparrowyou didn’t include anything about mr. mistoffelees being bold and confident, sassy, competitive, a show off even, and having a beautiful song sung by… uhhh. i think it’s rum tum.. i was so upset they ruined mistoffelees.. he’s my fav in the musical.
At 11:00 at night I suddenly had the thought that perhaps the 2019 version of cats wasn’t so bad so I decided to rewatch. I instantly regretted that discussion and will never do it again
I decided to give it a try a while back and… It is definitely something, it ain’t bad, but it ain’t all that good, there are parts I liked (this being one of them) but there some parts that did not work, (the look is a huge contender) but throughout it all, this was an experience and whilst it is defiantly has points for being the laughingly funny bad movie, there are some good things about this that I hope are appreciated in the future. Let’s just hope an PROPER animated version of the musical is at the very least nowhere as bad looking as this film.
@@patrickwharf409THIS song is your example for things that WORKED?! 😂😂😂 Dude, this is an atrocity and an insult to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jacob Brent (among others)
You think I’m not aware of that, the whole look was seriously off. Hate on it all you want, it doesn’t bother but I personally think it is an ok movie. Goodnight Tri-State Area.
The song is a complete mess, but I will note that (as with Skimbleshanks) the cats that wear clothes are much less off-putting. More cartoonish and less Island of Dr. Moreau.
Skimbleshanks (in the 1998 film) is adorably cartoonish cause that’s his personality, he’s fun and animated in his character- this new one is ok, not the worst part but definitely more stiff
It should have been more highly stylized like the stage show because why would you bring a grim and gritty realism approach to a show about singing, dancing, incredibly horny cats?
It's just weird having him sing, especially how awkward alot of the lines sound Like in the 1998 version, it holds so much power and is easily one of the best songs But this? This isn't even a song
To be honest, I never thought about Misto's sexuality when I was watching the 1998 version growing up. Fans often paired him and Victoria together although in my head-canon they were brother and sister. I sort of shipped him with Cassandra.
@@donnaquixote7538I can see him being with Cassandra more than him being with Victoria. (Although I prefer him and RTT) like him and Victoria really don’t seem to have that much chemistry.
I think it's probably because he's wearing some items of clothing, the hat and the jacket fits well with his black fur, so he looks like a real magician. Skimbleshank's design was also okay imo.
the design wasn’t bad.. the song and overall character is horrid.. he’s my favorite in the musical, and it was so sad to see a sassless mr. mistoffelees..
This really fucks up what i love sbout cats. Cats is great becasue there is no plot. Mr mistoffelees being sble to swoop in and save the day with no difficulties is so fucking fun. Yes, he can sing some of his own verses but it has to be like hes putting on a show, not q scared cat. Also, he and tugger are friends if not something more and its so sad not to see that relationship :(
Why did they do this!! This was one of my favorite songs from the musical and they stomped all over it. Also, whats with them making that cats sing the songs about themselves?
Oh no! What happened to misto! Saw this on Broadway back in the 80s as a teenager and it was absolutely the magical highlight of the show! Pooh, this is sad!
I love how literally no one takes into consideration that Andrew Lloyd Webber literally remade the soundtrack for the movie. He is as established in the industry as anyone else. He most likely wanted this song to look like this.
I wonder why it only worked the last time he did it... The biggest difference seems to be that all the other cats were joining in sincerely the last time. In which case, doesn't Victoria deserve as much credit if not more because she was the one who got everyone to believe in him? Mistoffelees was just the conduit but all of the cats' belief in him was the power. Or maybe it was just kissing the wand (4:10). Maybe it was his saliva that did it.
Made sure to avoid the movie when it came out and seeing some clips of it years later, I'm so glad I did. Everything about the story, the changes, the design and the music makes me so sad considering how great the stage play and the 1998 version are.
Think this is where the script writers just gave up adapting and just went “let’s just repeat the chorus about six or ten times and have the actor talk with some melody to it”
HES NOT SHY LIKE THIS IN THE PLAY IT HURTS SEEING THIS I want my most confident and dance around making lighting rainbow and glitter where he just did the stopping thing two times and got it the second time
For me, this was the moment in this remake in which I realized a massive interstate pileup had occurred and there would be no EMS arriving soon enough to help the victims. To eff with this song in such a way is a spit in the face to all who grew up loving the 1998 for this scene specifically.
I don’t like the fact that he and Victoria have a romantic relationship in this! Especially after knowing that they were brother a sister in musical! You read that correctly. Mr. Mistoffelees and Victoria were Brother and Sister in the musical! AND THEY HAVE A ROMANCE IN THIS MOVIE!
They made it heterosexual and I hate it. Why isn't Tugger hyping up Misto?? That's like the whole point of the song! And what about the rainbow scarf?! I am very, very disappointed in Tom Hooper.
Finally someone said it! I was wondering why no one had and then realised that the homophobes LIKE that this movie straightwashed them. Sigh. Meanwhile the comments on the '98 stage recording are all full of people doing meta analysis of their relationship based on their dancing and the lyrics in both their songs.
I know adaptations of older stuff has to have changes and make it their own. But the worst thing about this is that he is singing his own song. Lyrically, it makes more sense for someone else to be singing it because hes so shy, he wouldnt be bragging about himself, even if he was confident. Which in this movie, he isnt confident, which makes less sense for him to be singing it. Yea we would prefer rum tum tugger, but really anyone but mistoffelees should be singing this song
If you, like me, got acquainted with two films (1998 and 2019) at the same time, then perhaps you would understand how much the last film is better than the first in almost all respects.
So, I totally get what they were going for here. And there are parts of it I like. But it is really awkward for him to sing the song himself… The unconfident version of Misto works fine for the movie, but the stage version is def superior.
One more thought. I wish they had made it more clear in the movie that it was actually him that brought back Old D. It almost seems like Old D just came in the back door and started singing. And if the goal was to still make you question wether the powers were real after all that, don’t show him levitating instruments and shooting flowers out of his sleeves. Maybe I’m putting too much though into this. Actually I KNOW I am.
Honestly this was my favorite part of that horrible movie. This mistofeles it’s a completely different character and I think that’s good, cause the song CAN work as a hype song or a show off song
I guess he seems somewhat more vague & aloof than Jacob Brent. 😉 Really, this has grown on me. While I love the '98 Misto song, which is sung by Tugger and superior in so many ways, I don't hate this as much as everyone else seems to. I particularly like the final portion of this number. The ending "... As you... As meeeee!" is quite charming to me. Just meeeeeeeeeee! I guess. 🤷♂️
0:52 "I'm always deceiving you into believing that you're only hunting for mice" shouldn't that be 'I'm' only hunting for mice? Who's he talking to? The confused look of the other cat after that line is the same one I had lol
Munkustrap: The greatest magicians have something to learn from Mr Mistoffelees' Conjuring Turn! And we all say "Oh! Well, I never! Was there ever a cat so clever as Magical Mr Mistoffelees?"

She didn’t sing along again for the rest of the movie… My mom had actually seen the musical before in the 90s when she visited New York. She knew what Cats was. Seeing her start to sing briefly, and then stop, realizing what movie she was watching… It was almost heartbreaking. It was like watching an old person remember something wonderful from their past years… and then also remember that their friends are dead… It was tragic… I can’t believe Tom Hooper managed to make what was supposed to be a joyous moment in the musical into… this.

You know the more I watch this and the original 1998 film, it's not that this is terrible, it's just that the original tells such a different story. But I actually love Laurie Davidson's take on the role.

@@laysmaxx5789Taylor Swift's character is essentially what Misto's character was in the stage show, and ig Tom Hooper thought they're couldn't be too confident characters so just completely got rid of what made this character this character.
@@scottcowan7343 Ahh okay. That's kind of sad because mistoffelees' performance is the most electrifying one and Tom hooper totally ruined the character.
@laysmaxx5789 Tom Hooper completely ruined this film lmao.
Who would want timid, unsure, non-magic Mistoffelees when you can have sparkly, confident, definitely magic, and adored Mistoffelees? The latter is better, trust me
Yup indeedy!
They desyassified Mistoffelees
And subtle most likely possibility gay
Though this has some unique charm to it (im not denying this movie is a mess) but it still missing the "magical" feelings from when you watch the original play
Plus it's kinda contradicting how he's so self conscious and then say "we'll say oh well I've never met...."
Why is Mr. 🪄🌟Presto🪄🌟 singing his own song? I *see* Jason Derulo in the scene. Why remind me that he should be the one singing? Why?
In some versions, I think MM sings his own song (?). At least in the broadway cast recording he does.
@@beccaberry688 in the original production, Tugger sings this and MM just says "✨PRESTO✨"
If the actor playing misto is a good enough singer he will sing some verses
Cause Derulo keep saying his name instead of misto's
@@beccaberry688 Yes but on stage it's Tugger who sings it, because there is so much dancing on Misto's part that it's impossible to sing and dance at the same time
I get how the big shot celebtities can't be on set for too long, but the fact that Jason Derulo is RIGHT THERE hurts me so much
He's going ahhhhhhh in a hauntingly angelic voice and it's got me actually crying like why is it so funny-
Big celebrities..... Jason Derulo.... I don't get it 🤔🙃😆
To me this song is more melancholic than anything.
Exactly. And they told this actor it's because he lacked dancing talent they figured he was right for the part. Who are they kidding?
@@АндрейМинаев-и2щDude, I, like you, got acquainted with both at the same time, and you couldnt be more wrong.

lol “emotionally powerful” is going way too far. Like it’s really good yeah, but it’s not anything that would cause almost crying over.

He's like this because in this version he hasn't got Tugger there to tell him he's awesome.
They turned him from a badass to a shy uwu boi
@@merkules6 in the original play
At 11:00 at night I suddenly had the thought that perhaps the 2019 version of cats wasn’t so bad so I decided to rewatch. I instantly regretted that discussion and will never do it again
I decided to give it a try a while back and…
It is definitely something, it ain’t bad, but it ain’t all that good, there are parts I liked (this being one of them) but there some parts that did not work, (the look is a huge contender) but throughout it all, this was an experience and whilst it is defiantly has points for being the laughingly funny bad movie, there are some good things about this that I hope are appreciated in the future.
But I like the Music in this, the cast seemed to be having at least some fun whilst recording, and I looked at your reply and was about to say something.
Then I realised, I’m just a flipping weirdo.
Moreau.
I'm getting cancer in my eyes and ears for how awkward they made Mr. Mistoffolees look and act. The 1998 version had more confidence than him.
Skimbleshanks (in the 1998 film) is adorably cartoonish cause that’s his personality, he’s fun and animated in his character- this new one is ok, not the worst part but definitely more stiff
@@algordo1997 75uhb
It should have been more highly stylized like the stage show because why would you bring a grim and gritty realism approach to a show about singing, dancing, incredibly horny cats?
Those weren't seven kittens, those were like four to five mice that came out of a hat.
That phenomenal cat only did it not long ago
It's just weird having him sing, especially how awkward alot of the lines sound
Like in the 1998 version, it holds so much power and is easily one of the best songs
But this? This isn't even a song
I like to belive this was Misto’s up bringing. He wasn’t sure but slowly gained confidence. I love him both ways.
They butcher this song by constantly stopping it, robbing it of its upbeat empowering energy, and they also straight wash the character.
To be honest, I never thought about Misto's sexuality when I was watching the 1998 version growing up. Fans often paired him and Victoria together although in my head-canon they were brother and sister. I sort of shipped him with Cassandra.
@@donnaquixote7538 Most of the fandom ships him with Tugger and honestly it works better since they have really good chemistry.
@@donnaquixote7538I can see him being with Cassandra more than him being with Victoria. (Although I prefer him and RTT) like him and Victoria really don’t seem to have that much chemistry.

@@tamarbeker1701 Yesss...the 2016 Broadway revival even changed the choreography so that they could dance together 😂
the only reason i liked that Rum Tum Tugger didn't sing here is because I don't like Jason Derulo's portrayal of the character
I agree.
definitely
I feel like Mr Mistoffelees is the only design that wasn’t complete nightmare fuel.
I think it's probably because he's wearing some items of clothing, the hat and the jacket fits well with his black fur, so he looks like a real magician. Skimbleshank's design was also okay imo.
I like his shy demeanor
the design wasn’t bad.. the song and overall character is horrid.. he’s my favorite in the musical, and it was so sad to see a sassless mr. mistoffelees..
huh?? his lips are too big
he looks like hes on weed
They just need to stop hiring tom hooper for bloody musicals
Exactly.
Thank God nobody sings or dances in King's Speech
he has a habit of hiring a listers who *cannot* sing for the life of them (see half of the cast in this, all of the leads in les mis)
Tom Hooper should make Horror Films now.
He even did Les Mes
I know why it took so long in this version! He didn't do the Conjuring Turn!
Bingo
This version is more neutered than the animals it’s based off
This really fucks up what i love sbout cats. Cats is great becasue there is no plot. Mr mistoffelees being sble to swoop in and save the day with no difficulties is so fucking fun. Yes, he can sing some of his own verses but it has to be like hes putting on a show, not q scared cat. Also, he and tugger are friends if not something more and its so sad not to see that relationship :(
But there IS a plot to CATS. It's Just hard to find.
This song had potential. It started out really good, but they constantly stop it. It’s not even a full song at this point.
I'd recommend listening to the version from the 98 film! (Unless you've already heard it, of course)
Why did they do this!! This was one of my favorite songs from the musical and they stomped all over it. Also, whats with them making that cats sing the songs about themselves?
This is so so sad compared to what could have been
So I’ve never watched the movie. I’m 2 seconds in and I’m already enraged by the fact that Tugger isn’t singing this song
Maybe jason durullo has a scheduling contract
He most likely wanted this song to look like this.
doesnt mean its good
never before have i been emotionally edged by a piece of music in a dissatisfying way
i played this for my cat and she bit me, i dont think she was impressed
😂🤣
XD I have a cat that’s the magical cats name, but I named it before the movie
W cat
That is an insult to her religion Xd
It really amazes the capacity Hollywood has for literally destroys everything that touches it.
I've never been blue-balled by the same musical number SIX TIMES IN A ROW, but here we are! 🤣

The song has its own charm - IM JUST SO CONFUSED WHY THE HANDS ARE HUMAN HANDS!!
Imagine stripping an entire song just to repeat the chorus 4 times
Think this is where the script writers just gave up adapting and just went “let’s just repeat the chorus about six or ten times and have the actor talk with some melody to it”

I swear when I saw the Rum Tug Tugger I said "Jason Darulo"(like the vine) and died--
For me, this was the moment in this remake in which I realized a massive interstate pileup had occurred and there would be no EMS arriving soon enough to help the victims. To eff with this song in such a way is a spit in the face to all who grew up loving the 1998 for this scene specifically.
Literally the only song I liked out of the whole movie. I never did like this musical but the movie just sealed the deal.
Gotta love him animating the trombones..... when I'm pretty sure there aren't even trombones playing in the song.
Heard the movie stunk. I can see why.. Play was way better. Was wondering why they made him a nervous cat.
Wow, the difference between this song and Thimbleshank is MIND-BLOWING
I don’t like the fact that he and Victoria have a romantic relationship in this! Especially after knowing that they were brother a sister in musical! You read that correctly. Mr. Mistoffelees and Victoria were Brother and Sister in the musical! AND THEY HAVE A ROMANCE IN THIS MOVIE!
They made it heterosexual and I hate it. Why isn't Tugger hyping up Misto?? That's like the whole point of the song! And what about the rainbow scarf?! I am very, very disappointed in Tom Hooper.
my thoughts exactly
Finally someone said it! I was wondering why no one had and then realised that the homophobes LIKE that this movie straightwashed them. Sigh. Meanwhile the comments on the '98 stage recording are all full of people doing meta analysis of their relationship based on their dancing and the lyrics in both their songs.
To borrow a quote from the Monty Python film 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'... "GET ON WITH IT!"
"YES! GET ON WITH IT!"
I liked the movie because it kinda gave you a behind the scenes of each character.
This movie is a disaster and I love laughing at it but I unapologetically love this song it’s hilarious and catchy 🤣
Actually I KNOW I am.
no presto? no tugger being a simp for 6 minutes? no ballet? heterosexual plot? this isn't cats bro
I will forever be a broken woman
It actually works if you look at from the perspective that he's singing about himself and trying to build up his confidence
Honestly this was my favorite part of that horrible movie. This mistofeles it’s a completely different character and I think that’s good, cause the song CAN work as a hype song or a show off song
Mr. Mistoffelees and Victoria sure make a happy couple in this version.
I guess he seems somewhat more vague & aloof than Jacob Brent. 😉
Really, this has grown on me. While I love the '98 Misto song, which is sung by Tugger and superior in so many ways, I don't hate this as much as everyone else seems to. I particularly like the final portion of this number. The ending "... As you... As meeeee!" is quite charming to me. Just meeeeeeeeeee! I guess. 🤷♂️
Fair enough.
Look How They Massacred My Boy!!
God it is truly horrible what they did to this poor song.
they ruined a one of the best plays, this is just sad.

What about the play version
What in the blue hell did they do to Mr. Mistofolees? this aria is not supposed to be 1st person. it completely destroys the reverence of the character.
I'm just here for the 1998 comments. That was THE classic
I remember watching this movie with my mom during our weekly tradition of “Bad Movie Sunday”
She had not sung along a single time… preferring to stare at the screen in confusion and horror…
But then…
During this scene…
She began to sing:
“…Magical Mister Mistoffelees…!-“
But then… she stopped… her smiled faltered.
She didn’t sing along again for the rest of the movie…
My mom had actually seen the musical before in the 90s when she visited New York. She knew what Cats was. Seeing her start to sing briefly, and then stop, realizing what movie she was watching… It was almost heartbreaking.
It was like watching an old person remember something wonderful from their past years… and then also remember that their friends are dead…
It was tragic… I can’t believe Tom Hooper managed to make what was supposed to be a joyous moment in the musical into… this.
I may be among the very small group of humans who actually love this movie. 😻 So be it!
No dance No Mistoffelees😢
Did you know that when Andrew Lloyd Webber first made Cats the Musical, he wanted one actress who was both a Classical Prima Ballerina, like Victoria and a Lyrical Prima Donna, like Jemima, aka Syllabub? Well, now there is, thanks to both the Royal Ballet and the 2019 Film.
