I have a quick question. What do you think of a bearing that has just slight surface Pitting. More like a discoloration. And it's only on certain rollers. Not all of them. The bearing spins great.

I always wire brush the cam head and roller pins if they’re stuck plus the abs ring and sensor but that’s just me and I use vice grips for the springs not a screwdriver but to each his own
Best method for doing the anchor pins I've found is heating the spider red hot then using a ball joint press to pop out the pin. Then heat the sleeve red hot and try bending it up over itself near the slit on the sleeve. Takes an extra 15 minutes at most per axle
Hey dude . I’ve been following you for a while now ,and you are super handy and smart . I have a 5 axle flatbed trialer , and every single brake on her don’t release Except the front lift axle brakes , so I am guessing my problem is behind the first lift axle air tank ,because I ran alcohol in it and I drained all the tanks ,and I didn’t seem to notice any alcohol coming out off my train valve except the very front lift axle tanks . I spent so much money on this trialer , and every shop tells me something different. I do work on my truck & trialer myself, and I did pull all wheels to check and there is nothing wrong . What happens is every time push my brakes regardless easy or hard they stick and keep heating up till they smoke . All brakes are adjusted according to the stroke length, I thought they tighten up in the beginning, but they don’t ,they just won’t release. The drag isn’t crazy , it feels like the brakes are holding about 10 -20 psi in pressure only . Something else .... everytime I pull my trialer parking brakes when I’m parked at my yard , the valve ( brakes valve on the trialer ) keeps leaking and then engages after about 20-30 seconds . Could that be my problem? It is not that cold in Ontario yet, but I heated up all off my trailers valves today ,and drained the tanks . I noticed black greasy moisture coming out of my tanks .
Works well for me try it and see. Right size screw driver makes it a breeze to small and it's not stiff Enough to big and it's hard to get the hook turned into the hole.
I just had new brakes shoes and drum installed on the front axel on my 1995 step deck trailer and initially I had them backed off 1/4 of a turn and when loaded braking is smooth but when empty I am having issues when them locking up when applied. So I backed them off a 1/2 of a turn and still have the same issue. So I went up to a full turn just to see if that would make any changes and they still lock up when empty. Any ideas of what’s happening?
I've been wondering for a while what that rod and slot thing is on top of these slack adjusters, visible on the far one at 0:10. I know it rachets/ auto adjusts the slack adjuster, replaces the small arm behind the main connection to the brake chambers. But why is that adjustable? Doesn't the slack adjuster rachet 360 degrees? (as in the rectangular rod can be moved around the slack adjuster, as in why is that part adjustable and what difference does it make?).
ive used this method for years but used vice grips for the 2 anchor springs. Recently i started working at a new garage and they use dust shields, hard to get the inside one =/
Put pivot side springs on first. Put shoes on without rollers. Hook s cam spring on the top hanger use a short pry bar with a v cut. Go in below s cam and put the v on the top off the bottom coil and pry down to hook it. Pry each shoe up to install rollers. Faster than his method and you dont have to worry about the pivot springs flying.
Hey let me ask your opinion, where I work we have some drivers who perform their tug test by dragging the tires. I have seen a few drag the trailer 30 feet before pushing the knob for the brakes on the trailer. I know tires take the brunt of the damage but what about brakes? If this continues on a regular basis would the brakes wear down from this? We have been going through tires like crazy cause of this.
Ball joint puller for the anchor pins. Heat on the spider is not the best unless u have to. Load up on the puller with your impact then use a mini sledge to hit the puller. Will come out every time with no heat. Just my 2 cents. Always good to try new tricks.
Any good advice on dealing with brake shoes that have seized to the drum? The truck sat in the weather and it’s probably going to require replacement of all the brake parts, but I need a good way to unseize the drum so I don’t damage anything else in the process.
I just hook the to small springs first, hang the big spring, put it on the pins and hook the big spring, then I stretch the shoe with a pry bar and slide my new rollers in. Boom done.
Thank you so much for this! I have a 2016 Reitnouer stepdeck and I've been wanting to do mine for a while now. I have to unfortunately use an electric impact but from what I've heard the Milwaukee electric impact is very strong. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you. I appreciate you man!
@@Ezrider359 thank you! I was looking at the 1 inch M 18 but that price! I have no access to shop air and I have to do things out on the road so it'll be worth it. I'm pretty excited about doing brakes for the first time ever. I've done tons of other things to my tractor and trailer but not brakes. Take care
Thanks for taking the time to make the videos. It's important to understand how our trucks operate. How and where do you buy the brake pads? Do you need to know sizes or beans off brakes?
you can eaither call the manufactures dealer (pete,kw,freightliner, greatdane ect.) with the vin number and they can give you the part number for the shoes, or you can just pull them off and run down to where ever you want to buy them and they can cross reference the part number stamped on the shoes. there is generally a core charge anyway. after you buy your first set of shoes for whatever your working on you can write the part number in a note pad so you have it for next time.
Those anchor pins are meant to pivot and rotate in their holes. Doesn’t take long to grab a ball joint press and press them out. Then just shoot new ones in and have a proper brake job done
i always used to take the trailer brakes up in the 70s after a lot of hill driving with a ring spanner and a hammer just turn them till they stop then back off half inch.
I have a 2017 wabash dry van. 2 weeks a go I took it to a shop to get rear axle brakes and drums replaced and wheel seals an all wheels but for some reason the rear axle brakes keep locking up I can be doing anything from 10 mph to 70 mph and I can feel how the abs keeps releasing and holding the brakes it's so frustrating because I took it to 8 different shops and no one can figure out why is doing that since they put new brakes on it . 3th shop I took it to they told me I had the wrong brakes on it so they replaced the brake shoes one more time because they said the shop where I took it to put different brakes shoes on it . Now has supposed the right brake shoes and still locking up . No ABS lights on nor anything else they just keep locking up . I was even thinking that something might be wrong with my tractor when it sends air to the trailer . . I disconnected the abs cables to the trailer to see what it would do . But with out the abs they really drag and smoke like crazy . Any help would be really helpful, at this point I'm thinking of replacing everything on it but I'm afraid I will spend $$$ lot more money and down time and issue won't be fixed . Everything started since I replaced the rear axle brakes before everything was totally fine
hum, sounds strange for sure. some thinks i could think of to check would be s-cams and bushings also make sure that the air bags on the rear axle are getting the same amount of air pressure as the front and look at the drums make sure they are in spec and defective and out of round or out of spec or something goofy like that.
I never even thought about the drums being defective i thought because they are new they were perfectly fine ,,I think that will be the problem because when I Barely touch the brake pedal I can feel how it feels like when u have bad brake rotors on your car, but it never felt like that until they installed the new brakes and drums on it . I will definitely be checking those drums next . Thanks a lot for the reply 👍👍👍

Best method for doing the anchor pins I've found is heating the spider red hot then using a ball joint press to pop out the pin. Then heat the sleeve red hot and try bending it up over itself near the slit on the sleeve. Takes an extra 15 minutes at most per axle
Straight up , thanks for sharing. Subscribed 👍
You explained everything very well great video!!
Bad s cam bushings can cause the shoes to drag. Return springs in the cans could be busted bad or gummed up valve could also be a cause.
Sounds like relay valve sticking not exhausting holding brakes on slightly
I like how u use the screwdriver and the spring goes in. I've been using vise grips and it seems harder than you'r way. Thanks
Works well for me try it and see. Right size screw driver makes it a breeze to small and it's not stiff Enough to big and it's hard to get the hook turned into the hole.
THANK YOU FOR THE TIP BUBBA..MUCH APPRECIATED
I use a 4 wheel drive ball joint press to push them pins out. No need to heat it up even the completely seized ones will push through.
What brand shoes you would recommend ?
Meritor, Bendix, Haldex etc .
Excellent tutorials. Keep on keepin' on.
thank you
Nice simple thank you I will try this weekend wish me luck
Good video appreciate it
Ball joint puller for the anchor pins. Heat on the spider is not the best unless u have to. Load up on the puller with your impact then use a mini sledge to hit the puller. Will come out every time with no heat. Just my 2 cents. Always good to try new tricks.
what like this th-cam.com/video/6IVmwx-90yM/w-d-xo.html
Ezrider359 ya man!!
I wish you lived closer to me lol good video bro
Thanks and Merry Christmas
Thanks man!! I have to replace the brakes on 13 (4 axle) chassis. Cake now.
yup break shoe replacements are very easy once you have done a few sets. glad you found the video usefull.
Big spring first... AWESOME 😎👍👍
on a tandem semi when changing brakes would i need to do both axels ?
Hi I have a 2013 kenworth and I let my brakes to thin and the s cam jump how do I return the s cam back thanks.
There’s a crow bar with a notch cut through the middle to help put on and remove that large spring that makes this job 100 times easier
the way i do them is pretty easy no need for special tools.
Any good advice on dealing with brake shoes that have seized to the drum?
The truck sat in the weather and it’s probably going to require replacement of all the brake parts, but I need a good way to unseize the drum so I don’t damage anything else in the process.
bfh... release the breaks and smack the drum with a hammer a few times the vibration should break the shoes free from the drum.
Release the brake, back the slack adjuster off, start truck and pull forward/backward to free the shoes from the drums.
Do you change the drums everytime. Or do have to on tank trucks hauling crude oil
Not required as long as the are in spec if there all gouged out from gravel and rocks driving lease roads then no there not legal
That was awesome. Yeah if the pins are not too worn you can reuse them, I would have used a bit of grease on the high friction surfaces.
I just hook the to small springs first, hang the big spring, put it on the pins and hook the big spring, then I stretch the shoe with a pry bar and slide my new rollers in. Boom done.
yeah a lot of guys do it that way.
My half inch Milwaukee fuel will remove properly torqued lug nuts it won't tighten lug nuts to 450 though.
Take care
That's the fastest I've seen them done, Great video. Any chance you would know where to get sleeper extension panels for a 2005 Peterbuilt 387..? 💛👍👍
Good stuff, we are all Learning😃
This is the same method for steer brakes?
Gotta do this project soon hope it goes as easy for me
thanks for the video. very usefull
your welcome, and thanks for watching
This guy is soo awesome !!
Very helpful !!! Thanks
thank you, glad you found the video helpfull.
How do you do it when you don't have the clearance on the inside??
Those anchor pins are meant to pivot and rotate in their holes. Doesn’t take long to grab a ball joint press and press them out. Then just shoot new ones in and have a proper brake job done
I cannot understand why you did not clean underneath before you put new shoes on. What was your thinking?
Not really sure exactly what you're referring to but generally never is a bad thing to clean things.
i always used to take the trailer brakes up in the 70s after a lot of hill driving with a ring spanner and a hammer just turn them till they stop then back off half inch.
Where can I get the brake shoes or brake pads
Thank u sir great job
glad you enjoyed the video
Parfact brother 👍👍
