  • I have recently c=gotten interested in trying to receive satellite signal. in the L band. This is my first attempt and I am comparing a store bought antenna and a home brew helical Special thanks to Tom WB2YDS for helping me along with this project.

Great video, Paul. Might be nice to see patch antenna with Sawbird attached for comparison. Also, in SDR Console, using the 'Signal History' utility, configured to very slow speed with noise floor trace would facilitate a graphical side-by-side comparison of all antenna configurations tests. Thanks and keep up the great work. Ken -- WB0OCV

Hi Ken... I am really behind on answering comments. I should have done that.... I totally W1VLF
forgot about how well it would have shown the difference.

I've also read somewhere that the bias T on the sdrplay unit is not good enough and you need an external supply.

Interresting. Good performance of the antenna.
You moved up in frequency by a factor 1000 😉

Isnt that counter clockwise turns? I didnt see it correctly also why not put the sawbird on the patch?
Can you share your 3D printer script?

With the size of the sfrplay, (and cost) you would think they would make it so you can power these basic devices. Anyhow good vid. I love when you do antenna projects as your knowledge is crazy awesome and so far ahead of others who just push products already built.

Thank you JJ I have more videos on this topic coming.. I just got sidetracked on tracking weather balloons

Glad to see your homemade antenna works better. I don't know anything about satellite reception or have that capability. However, I found it quite interesting that a clockwise helix vs CCW would make a difference. I remember this was a question when friends and I were winding
our Tesla coil, secondary, and I just took a look to be sure that it was indeed CW, I knew the primary [an Archimedes Sprial] flat coil was in the same direction. I don't remember if there was a reason why CW was chosen? Maybe you do?
But what I do know something about, are chainsaws. From what I heard, either the operator is totally unknowledgeable at the task with an unsharpen chain or is intentionally Jamming. I say Jamming. I could digress, about how I came to the conclusion but I'll leave it at that.🤣
I see you upgraded your SDR to SDRplay RSPdx. I've been wanting to get an SDR. Thinking about the SDRplay duo. Comments Welcome.
I need to catch up on your videos, maybe you addressed the subject already.

Great content sir. New to the channel here. Quick question - What software are you using here to see constellation diagrams?
    Thanks

Would you consider making the helix to sell? My QTH is at circa 8000' elevation. I have a dish farm here, but would love to experiment with the helix-, KE0ZMW

Don't know which model sawbird you have there, but this one "Nooelec SAWbird+ iO - Premium SAW Filter & Cascaded Ultra-Low Noise LNA Module for L-Band (Inmarsat AERO/STD-C) Applications. 1542MHz Center Frequency" ($45) says it needs 180 mA (c.f. RSPdx 100 mA).

Yes.. That is the SAW bird I am using. I saw a post somewhere about the current output of the RSPDX... It was stated to be 250 ma by someone.. Seemed like a lot, anyway I am now using a external bias Tee to power the preamp at the antenna and that works fine.

All that pvc will degrade your helix. The best thing to do is to have a PTFE rod or flat strap hanging the turns and have air as an insulator instead of pvc touching the wire. Also, make sure to silver plate the wire. Skin effect.
Have you measured the helix SWR? If not, use a nano VNA and adjust it. 73, PT9KK.
