Hi Mike. Thank you for the review. I also appreciate the kind comments about the coil from your subscribers. I just thought about joining two 40's together with some chain and make nunchucks for hams to fend off the dear and bears, or in my case the roo's and koala's! Hi-hi.
What a coincidence! I just received my Mad Dog Coil yesterday as well. It's a very versatile design. While you went with running a jumper to the lower port to use the lower as a connection to your coax, I did the opposite....I ran a jumper from the ground port to the lower so I could use the lower to have a direct connection to my puck for the radials. So many ways to run this! I'll be testing this coil with both a 6 foot whip and a 17 foot this weekend and probably eventually tuning it with the extra clamps for the 17. No antenna addiction here, I can stop whenever I want! 73, VA7LBA
I ordered my 80 meter Mad Dog last week and it should arrive this week. I can't wait to try it out. Great review and I hope my results will be as good as yours. Keep up the good work on your channel.
Nice review and spot on. I got mine a week ago after watching Coastal Waves and Wires video on this antenna. Glad you got one to do a review, keep up the great content! 73
What the WRC should be. I purchased a SlideWinder primarily due to the convenience and non-fussy all metal collars as you explained. It performs well. Really like the additional collars feature on the MadDog. Really good execution on this offering.
@@forgetyourlife Yep. You gotta be careful with them as with any lightweight coil. CHA has an offering. It's a monster. Handles 500W SSB 300W CW 200W DATA. Built like a tank. Price reflects it too.
Hey Mike I am so happy you got to use that finally. I have had mine the 80m version for about 6 months and it is outstanding. The turning of the collar for fine tuning is great and the construction is great I don't have a bad word to say about it. I am glad I bought it before your video or I would buy it on your recomendation. LOL. I saw you on POTA all day and I wished I could get you but the bands were weird today. The Solar Flux was 0 all day, I never saw that before. Must have been a storm or something. But I love the video love the antenna. I have my video on my channel about that antenna and it is popular. Hope all is well there friend. 73
Nice looking antenna. But for simplicity sake, I still go with an EFHW. One roll of wire, through it up into a tree, no radials required, and get all bands.....easy peasy, fast, simple and effective.
I’m getting one of these. Might even do the 80 for more options, the 17’ whip does 20 and smaller on its own, so the 40 option really gives you 40 and 30. The 80 is where it’s at
Hey Mike. I saw Marty’s video a year ago where he described the homebrew version of this coil. I left a comment about how disappointed I was. These are made from threaded irrigation pipe. I searched the internet from top to bottom for threaded irrigation pipe. Every web site that listed threaded irrigation pipe had a .au url. Which means, outside of Australia, this stuff is unobtanium. I was so disappointed that I couldn’t make one of these fantastic coils myself. Keep up the good work Marty.
Lets get a coordinated push from all the HAM influencers to push representatives to push S. 3690 and H.R.3241 - Amateur Radio Communications Improvement Act through congress.
I love the name! That was my nickname in the Marine Corps! This coil looks like it is well constructed. Since I am in a wheelchair, redials are a real PITA to use. I may grab one of these and try the screen under it for the ground plane.
G’day Mike! Keep up the great work on your channel! You’re one of my favourite ham radio TH-camrs! I got my Mad Dog Coil a few weeks ago. I connected it to my Xuegu G90 running 20 watts, a cheap EBay 5.2m whip antenna, 4 x radials and made a 5/7 contact from my backyard in Geelong (Near Melbourne) in South Eastern Australia to PD2BA 15 miles out of Amsterdam! Tuning the antenna with 2 x coil taps was a breeze. I have the 40m version and have it set up for 40m and 20m. The video of the QSO to the Netherlands from VK Land is on my TH-cam channel. I’m very impressed with Marty’s workmanship and the price on the coil. 73 from Australia! Craig VK3CRG
Fairly quick shipping too considering coming all the way from Australia. I ordered mine about a week ago and it landed in the US yesterday. I assume it has to go through customs or something, but I’m expecting it any day now.
Really like those collars. My only real complaint about the Wolf River Coil is the plastic screw on the collar and that it always makes that collar just a little more difficult to get set right.
Thanks for the review Mike! Where did you get that puck for the WRC tripod? Keep in mind that the more turns you short on a coil the Q gets worse and that means less power radiated. So the wide metal band collar might not be the best design. Especially when you have more than one on there.
From REZ Antennas. www.rezantenna.com/product-page/universal-puck You may need to get the insulator too. www.rezantenna.com/product-page/universal-radial-puck-insulator
I've tried tuning my 10m - 40m mad dog antenna using several different mounting options (that you showed) and I just can't get it to tune below 8:1 . I agree that it is nicely designed. I've tried 4 radials and 10 radials to no avail.
Unfortunately we cannot order anything from Wolf River Coils. I want this Mad Dog coil, but I don't have this wolf river stand. Any other stand or mag mount I can use?
Mike, like always, nice video. I really like the design. I have a WRC Silver Bullet with 213" whip. When working 20M and up, I bypass the coil and only tune the whip. With MD you tune using the coil for 40/80M and up. I'm guessing you can tune either with the coil using a smaller whip? 73 WB3IZU
By the way the last three times I went out I had a person walk straight up to my antenna to make a short cut in the park. I told the person or persons each time there was wires on the ground. Two never saw then (I use speaker wire) So Today I painted my radials florescent orange. I hope that does the trick. I activated during the eclipse. WQ9V .....73

Ordered one just waiting for it to arrive from down under. Like the fact of locking in your bands. Ordered 3 extra collars. Thanks for the video.

I think this is the first video I've seen where the different feed points were pointed out. That's so cool!

I ordered one also after seeing Walt’s review. It arrived sometime last week which was sooner than I expected with the long Easter weekend 😎👍

Slidewinder is cool but I’ve seen to many pictures of them splitting apart.

Congrats there Mike, I see you hit 40k!!!!
Yes! Thank you!
Just bought the 80 on your recommendation. I have always wanted to work the 80m band. So excited to get it.
Awesome, I hope you make lots of contacts!

Unfortunately I cannot find that Wolf River stand to purchase. Are there any alternatives, or maybe a mag mount? Where did you get your 17" whip?

and i grabbed one !!!!, thanks for the info!

Nice review. Got my 80M version a couple of days ago. Just waiting for the weather to get better to get out and test. 73.
I. Wonder how Faraday cloth would work with this coil?
I already have the faraday cloth, but can't reach anyone at Wolf River to order that stand.
Great video, thanks for supporting an Australian manufacturer...
Really like those collars. My only real complaint about the Wolf River Coil is the plastic screw on the collar and that it always makes that collar just a little more difficult to get set right.
Just ordered the 80m version before seeing your Vid 😁
Now that’s a kool setup with the WRC base👍👍
Thanks for another great informative video.
Love the shirt!
Thanks
Looks like I need to buy another antenna! Awesome vid, Mike.
Thanks for the review Mike!

Got the 40 and 80 ordered. Good prices but shipping to the states is expensive.
I've got a 80m one on order
Good Job!
Thank You :)
Where do we order Tank Radio beans?
by any chance can you please check if the collar fits the Wolf River Coil?

I want one 😳 thanks Mike, good vid

Good vid - Thanks!
CRIKEY!!!!! I'll have to look at this thing!!! 73!
Roo bucks 😂
Love to try it out. But the $41 shipping is a turn off.
Great review subscribed to your channel. 73’s

You were running 40-50 watts and showed pic of 705 ??

A new type of antenna: "hwip"
😉
“K-Murder Spike” lol
I am not having success tuning this mad dog 40….frustrating
You didn't change polarization. Australia is on the other side of world so signal is inverted. 😁😆😆 73 Bro
