@@ArtBusinesswithNess nice! 😊 I’ve always been intrigued by freelance illustration, though I’m not sure it’s something I’ll pursue as a career. I started of my art journey, drawing pencil portraits of people. But a local author, msgd me and wanted a female artist to help illustrate her children's book. So it waa quite a big change for me, very challenging, but I enjoyed it! I wished I watched this video earlier though. Another challenge 😆 I'm used to traditional art, so I'm water coloring the illustrations and editing using photoshop. Anyways, I'm keen on watching more of your videos! Thank you ❤️
That's amazing Clarissa!! You stepped out of your comfort zone and stepped up to the challenge! It's a very brave thing to do :) Good luck with your second book!
Your video helped me a lot! I'm still a student of sorts, but I have a general idea of what I want to make. It's a very tricky concept, because I want it to talk about loss and grief when you are a child, and how the main character deals with it and finds joy in living again. It probably would be marketed towards older children, because it is a heavy subject, but I want to make it as light and wholesome as possible. I lost my father suddenly and even though I was not a child at the time, I struggled a lot finding the joy me and my dad had together. It's probably going to end up more teen-oriented, because I do not trust myself to actually translate grief to a language children can enjoy without problems, but it's just a project anyway, I'll probably just publish it online. Anyway, thank you for your video 🥰
I think this is a wonderful idea, Julia! And it's definitely possible to adapt this subject for kids! The parents or guardians of children who have experienced loss would be desperate for such books! I suggest to go to the library and read some children's books dealing with heavier subjects to give you ideas of how they treat it!

Very helpful! Thank you. Last winter, I wrote a children's book about mermaids actually, for my 2 grandnieces, where they were the mermaids. I illustrated it too. I am not the best artist, but I had a local print shop print it for me. They loved it. I am now working on a 2nd book, for two little boys I know who play a sport. And illustrating it too, and hope to publish this one, and learning all I can about publishing online. I learned a lot from the first book, mistakes to avoid, approach, etc. And now have another idea for a 3rd book too.
@@ArtBusinesswithNess, thank you! I made the story "a day of adventure, traveling to the community mermaid park to play with their best friends, "they had not seen in some time"", and gave the friends the names of my niece's best friends. And the animals and fish they met along the way. I sent 2 extra copies to send to their actual best friends too, so they could see they too, were mermaids! They loved the book too, so I was so grateful! I gave one to everyone in my family as well, and sold a couple to my friends. My boss bought one for his 3 year old daughter, and when he told me the next morning that she insisted he read it to her 3 times before he left for work, I was so touched! So now I am working on another book for 2 little boys I know. I gave a rough draft copy of the illustrations with the wording cut out and glued on each page, so one would have it in time for a Christmas present . He was so surprised! He really liked it too. His grandfather, uncle (my husband) and my nephew are all in it as teammates too! And it turned out that my nephew and his aunt's boyfriend whom he kicks around a ball with, happen to have the same name, Eric, so he can see he is playing with him too in the story, so it just added a whole other layer to the book, for me.

Some of it overlaps, but doing a whole animation degree just to end up doing children's books is a circuitous route with MANY skills that will go to waste (as I've found out lol) *cries over my animation degree
Thank you, Ness. That was really helpful! Can you do a tutorial, or series about Procreate on iPad or Affinity Designer on MacOS? Btw: Canadians are the best, love your accent!
I can't say for sure since I'm not an author and have only illustrated not published. But both processes are long and complicated in different ways. Traditional publishing, you need to go through several rounds of people until you're accepted which is tough and few manuscripts make it in. But in self-publishing, you need to put in a big upfront investment of money, and figure out how to do ALL the jobs at a publishing house: editing, printing, marketing, etc. It requires a lot of research and a lot of work.
@@ArtBusinesswithNess Thank you so much for your kind reply. Yes it is so much work to self publish a book, but the worst part is never knowing if it is good enough. Since you are the only judge you just never know is this done right? are kids gonna like it? for example look at the way you incorporated text with illustrations it is constant every time: text above but still within the drawing. What if I do one page illustration one page text and some pages with both incorporated? Is that OK? Are there people that edit self-published books? Also I love your work so much!! keep going greatness awaits!
Thank you for this great video. I'm desperate for professional advice: Can I illustrate a children's book in Sketchbook Pro instead of Photoshop? Thank you.
You can illustrate in whatever is comfortable to you: Sketchbook Pro, Procreate, pen and paper, whatever! All that matters is that you makes beautiful art, and can export clean high resolution files in the format they request.
Hi, :) I’m curious, do you create the photos on paper first and then scan them onto the computer or do you create all the sketches and everything from scratch starting form an app on the computer?
I like to sketch directly into the computer! I like it because I can use the lasso to move or resize parts of the sketch, but it’s a personal preference. Plenty of artists swear by sketching traditionally and nothing else feels right to them, and that’s valid too 🙂
Hey I really wanna get into this field of graphic designing and illustrations. But, I don't know where to start from. If you can then please guide me. It would be a great help.
Hi dear! I recommend my free masterclass as it really gives a full overview of a strategy to start your career, from beginning to end: th-cam.com/video/DsNL7mbn2HU/w-d-xo.html
I had to send original PSD files for this particular book, but it's always different for each publisher/printer. Sometimes I have to send PNGs, TIFFs, and one time even a PDF. You always have to ask your client to be sure, you can never assume anything!
Hi Ness. My story is a little different from others commenting. I have written a children’s book that involves animals (water fowl in particular) that tells the story of a lost loon and what transpires after he discovers he’s lost and distanced from his family. I’ve roughed out the characters, scenes but I’m looking to hire the illustrator to make it right & come alive. I like your approach, styles, ideas & techniques. Could I find out your ideas in working with/ from an unsolicited manuscript? Thanks
That sounds like a wonderful story!! I wish you the best of luck in your next steps :) My best advice would be to first decide what are your plans in terms of publishing. If you want to try to get your manuscript picked up by a traditional publisher, you have to submit your manuscript WITHOUT illustrations. This is very important! The publisher is the one to choose, hire and pay the illustrator. If you wish to self-publish, then you will need to find an illustrator and this can be quite expensive, so you should save up between $8k to $12k for 32 pages. I hope this helps!
Thank you Nichol I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I actually went to school for animation not illustration - I went to Cégep du Vieux-Montréal, they have a small but very mighty 2d animation program taught in French by wonderful teachers!
Your journey it's pretty inspiring 🤗 it's wonderful how you develop all your process! Photoshop is the only program you use to make your illustrations? Is it necessary to get a job or you can use any other art program? I'm currently looking for my first project but I don't know if it'll be a problem if I don't use photoshop for my work.
This video was made in 2020 but I have since started using (and fell in love!) with Procreate :) There is no ONE program or app that you HAVE to use in the industry. Just make sure your chosen program can export the files how your client wants it. Some programs can't do CMYK color profile, that's a big program for any project that will be in print.

I want to write children’s books showing kids how to take care of their diabetes. My son died from complications of diabetes so I want to help other kids have a fun way of learning how to care for their illness.
This book was made all in Photoshop, sketches included. Nowadays though, I use Procreate more! There's no best app, it's just a matter of what you like using :)
I am a preschool teacher and have lots of ideas for picture books, even have written out some. Untfortunately I can't draw and as a newbie it's kind of impossible to get into the industry with picture book writings alone... :(
That's not true! Publishers actually prefer to get manuscript submission without art, just the text alone. They like to be the ones to be a suitable illustrator. However, it's true that it's very competitive to get published, and you have a much better chance if you try to get a literary agent first :) Best of luck!
How long from start to finish did it take? I want to start some of my own books but don't have a ton of time to devote to it, maybe only 2-3 hours per day. Thanks!
8.5x8.5 at 300 dpi is actually quite a decently large size to draw on! That's 2550 pixels wide! You should easily be able to get clear lines at this size. If you're not able to, try another kind of brush.
I recommend getting an all-in-one printer with a scanner included. You can get this for pretty cheap nowadays ($100-$200). You can clean up the scans in Photoshop, but you probably don't need a new computer to do that :)
I actually don’t have Illustrator! Years ago I just had Illustrator so I made do with it, learning its vector capabilities. Now that I have the money to get the whole Adobe suite of I wanted, I know Photoshop inside and out so it doesn’t appeal to learn another app, and I’ve never needed Illustrator.
I now focus my career on illustrating greeting cards and patterns and no longer accept any picture book work. However to give you an idea, the average industry rate for illustrating a 32-page book is $8,000 to $12,000
I use some of Kyle Webster's brushes (free with Photoshop) like Fountania for the line details. Unfortunately, I don't know where my main watercolor brush came from because I got it from a job :( I've been asked about it a lot and I can't find it again. But I detail my Photoshop process more in this video: th-cam.com/video/a-uNGglFnM8/w-d-xo.html
It's nice to see somone actually plan out drawings and stuff. All the other "How to videos" show people making low content books on canvas, sticking together any drawing that are already free to publish a low quality book in under a day. This video is super professional. Thank you for sharing.

Some of it overlaps, but doing a whole animation degree just to end up doing children's books is a circuitous route with MANY skills that will go to waste (as I've found out lol) *cries over my animation degree
This video is inspiring!
Thank you hun!
How do I know what size my art file needs to be? I know that it need to have at least 300 dpi but I'm struggling with the right sizes
Thank you, Ness. That was really helpful! Can you do a tutorial, or series about Procreate on iPad or Affinity Designer on MacOS? Btw: Canadians are the best, love your accent!
I definitely can do a Procreate tutorial! I mostly use just my iPad to draw these days :) And thank you haha
I am dreaming of making children’s books for adults… I. E. Picture books for business, life, etc.
Honestly I'd buy that! Business and life could be a lot more digestible with pretty pictures!
Thanks!!!
You bet!

Which do you think is better go through the trouble of applying to publishing places or self-publish?
Which app do you use to create your illustrations????
Hi dear :) I use Photoshop on my desktop PC with a Wacom Intuos.
I would like make a story about my grandson and my two great niece and nephew. Similify sweet character
Super cute!
What software did you use? Beautiful work
This one is all done in Photoshop!
Great video. Thank you
such a beautiful piece of art! you are very very talented! may I ask what program are you using?
For this book I used Photoshop, although nowadays I'm loving Procreate more!
I’m sooo nervous because tomorrow I have a meeting to illustrate a children’s book
I hope your meeting went well!
How' you go?
Lovely!
Thank you dear, you are very kind!
Thank you very much for the advice.@@ArtBusinesswithNess
@@ArtBusinesswithNess Thank you so so much!!! You are great:)
Id love tonillustrate a childrens book my grandfather wrote.
What a wonderful idea!! This touches my heart very much.. My grandpa passed away last Monday 😢 I hope you get to make this project, hun
What file did the book have to be saved in? Amazing work by the way!!🔥🔥
I had to send original PSD files for this particular book, but it's always different for each publisher/printer. Sometimes I have to send PNGs, TIFFs, and one time even a PDF. You always have to ask your client to be sure, you can never assume anything!
@@ArtBusinesswithNess Thank you for responding!!🔥🔥🔥🔥

Very helpful. Wondering what medium you use.
For this book, I used Photoshop!
Children's book and horror stories:)
That would be a fun mix!
Thanks alot
Happy to help!
Thank you for sharing your process. Where did you go to school for illustration?:)
I actually have 19 books written and mostly illustrated
That's amazing! Very impressive!
Hai i want to work on a children book. But i have no artistic background whatsoever. Thoughts?
There's no reason you can't learn the skills you need to work on a picture book :) We all start somewhere!
Hi,I am after effect editor and I saw your channel .I love the process of making illustrator . It's my dream to make my own cartoon channel .I want to learn making cartoon illustrator need your more help plez replay me

love the video!! Can i know which program did u use to illustrate it? thanks
This book was illustrated entirely in Photoshop (although this was 3 years ago and now, I prefer Procreate!)
I would like to illustrate a children’s book I wrote myself... it’s about mending dreams that won’t grow. 😊
That seems a beautiful and poetic idea!! :D
Hello, my name is Angie Keeler 27 years old. Can I ask you how you get into the industry in illustration from I’m too late or too old
That's not old at all, Angela! You can get in the illustration industry at any age, and I have lots of videos with tips on where to start :)
I want to write children’s books showing kids how to take care of their diabetes. My son died from complications of diabetes so I want to help other kids have a fun way of learning how to care for their illness.
I'm a so so sorry to hear that hun. My condolences. What a wonderful, important topic this is for a children's book!
@@ArtBusinesswithNess thank you so much ❤️ I promised him I’d make him proud. I can’t think of a better way. 😊
I would like to illustrate a children's prayer book.

im writing an illistrating mu dream project right now. its an illustrated children's horror story
Congratulations on doing your dream project, that's amazing!!
@@ArtBusinesswithNess thankies
Usually how many pages on childrens book??
The typical size is 32 pages. But for younger readers, it's common to have shorter books. Since my style is younger, I've mostly done 24 page books.
Which program you use for sketch and draw and the final version of the book?!!!!
This book was made all in Photoshop, sketches included. Nowadays though, I use Procreate more! There's no best app, it's just a matter of what you like using :)
2nd picture " rainbow " bird is called Lophophorous. 😀😀 #nepal
Yes that one!
Thanks!
This book took about 3 months full-time to do. It's a huge endeavor!
Very nice
Thanks!
Hi Ness, I’m Victoria. Your work is outstanding. I am wondering if you can illustrate my children’s books. Looking forward to hearing from you. Shalom

Hi, How to draw clear lines in small size pages like 8.5x8.5 (300DPI) ?
8.5x8.5 at 300 dpi is actually quite a decently large size to draw on! That's 2550 pixels wide! You should easily be able to get clear lines at this size. If you're not able to, try another kind of brush.
Thanks ness I figured out that. However can you recommend any brush best for draw clean lines on procreate?
I would like to do a book about my cats
That sounds AMAZING!
very cool !!
Thanks!
I’d like to do a book about the value of each child. Watercolor. Not sure how to scan, do I Maas photoshop? Will it make me need a new computer?😩😂
I recommend getting an all-in-one printer with a scanner included. You can get this for pretty cheap nowadays ($100-$200). You can clean up the scans in Photoshop, but you probably don't need a new computer to do that :)

How do you come up with a story? :)
I'm not a writer so I don't! I'm hired by publishers to illustrate an author's story :)
8:44 why you used a photoshop for this shapes?.adobe ilustrator is more intuitive for illustrating shapes
I actually don’t have Illustrator! Years ago I just had Illustrator so I made do with it, learning its vector capabilities. Now that I have the money to get the whole Adobe suite of I wanted, I know Photoshop inside and out so it doesn’t appeal to learn another app, and I’ve never needed Illustrator.
a little girl and her Nonna in the garden
So sweet!
How much do you charge ?
I now focus my career on illustrating greeting cards and patterns and no longer accept any picture book work. However to give you an idea, the average industry rate for illustrating a 32-page book is $8,000 to $12,000
I wonder if you could share the exact brushes you use in this book? I love it so much! I really learned a lot from this. ♥️
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! This is how illustrators work :) Hustlers - not so much!
Yes I want to make my own art. I want to know how to put it in the book.
I would like to illustrate a book with my two grand daughters and teddy.
