Great use of Good Kid's music in this one! I will say I was the same going into this in that I was hoping for a proper adaptation of the comic's story but after experiencing it I love that there are so many different retellings of the same story with Takes Off feeling like a wrap up of all the different stories. Its funny, I went being a fan of the movie and recently reading the books to this thinking it would be a more faithful adaptation to the novels but not alone... I had a friend who never got any kind of contact with the Scott Pilgrim world, and I must say she LOVED IT... Even tho I mentioned from time to time what they were referring to in the movie or the books and she saw me full lost when the turn of events happened... It was super interesting and the proof that this stands as its own thing without prior knowledge on how things work. And I must say, after accepting it diverging to its own thing I really enjoyed it and couldn't recommend more to anyone who's a fan or just wants a new anime to follow.

Honestly this is an amazing way to do things. I got home late the day this drop, without knowing what the adaptation did other then brief mentions of it being an examination of what the original story is about, and with my expectations being much like most folks, I decided to watch an episode to sate my desire to at least watch something I've been waiting for with the plan to watch the rest later. That twist though got me hooked and I instantly understood what it was that I was watching instead. I had to stop myself from watching more after watching episode 3 as I needed sleep and I knew if I continued, I wouldn't be able to stop. Honestly I love the comparison of a NG+ or Scott Pilgrims own version of an Unlimited Blade Works. Like I understand other folks desire for a more faithful adaptation, but this gave me something I never knew I wanted. With a story helping flesh out so much about this world, even if I do wish some of the characters did get more attention on them, it still felt like a nice remix of the story I have loved so much.

The reason SPTO is so well received is the cast and crew put so much respect towards the characters, plot, franchise, and even the towards the fans.

But I am really glad it was never spoiled for me. I absolutely love seeing all of these new interactions between characters and getting insight to characters that in previous versions were essentially cardboard cutouts. If I really feel I need to experience that OG story again, I can always reread it.

To be fair Bryan (the creator) kept saying in every interview leading up to the release that it would very much be a departure from the comics and not a One-to-One adaptation. He's said pretty much what you've said: "If you need to experience the OG story again, you can always read the comic."
I can understand many would have wanted a fully faithful adaptation, but being upset that it's not what we got when it was never promised didn't make much sense to me. After all, the show's literally called "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off", can't really get more on the nose than that without outright saying "Scott's Fuckin' Missing"

I'm kinda sad about this because I never read the books or watched the movie. I wanted this to be my first exposure to the Scott Pilgrim story only for it to be a bait and switch alternate universe thing. It took me like 5 episodes to realize that this probably isn't how the story was supposed to go. I'm still enjoying it but now I'm sorta detached from it because it's not what I wanted. It's awesome that people who have loved Scott Pilgrim for so long have new content though.

I have sooooooo many conflicting emotions with this anime. Like big ones. I don't know how to describe it but it's like the feeling you get when you order take-out from a restaurant and you realize back home that they F'd up the order and you got wings when you wanted ribs. I mean, it isn't devastating when it still food you equally enjoy and is priced the same. But you can't help but feel disappointed by how it happened and you can't turn back so you're left with this nagging feeling after eating something still delicious.
In foresight, I shoulda guessed a painfully short 8 episode season would be want it is.... no way to condense (or start) a direct comic adaption with that.😕

  • @sodathejunker
    @sodathejunker 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

They very clearly were pulling a rebuild. If anything the nods of the script being the actual movie’s plot and the “expected” series of events prove it. The painting in the Skateboard scene, everyone getting their happy endings and Scott and Ramona finally accepting themselves and maturing, and the VERY direct “AK Field” plotpoint (which is a more literal interpretation of what AT Fields represent in Eva) all just bolt it down more.
I’m surprised it wasn’t a direct adaption, but since we have the comics and the game which is pretty faithful, I’m really happy with this. It feels like a true sequel.

    • @sodathejunker
      @sodathejunker 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

That said I love this crap, it expands the worlds and characters rather than “replacing” the originals.
And I think preferring a beat-for- beat remake can be braindead if the original still holds up well. (I.e OG Eva can easily be rewatched and enjoyed, while OG FFVII has come to really show its age graphically and script-wise and would have benefited more from a true remake). I like that if anything, it pushes people towards the comics yet again, re-asserting its value.

Although the anime is definitely growing on me (i had the same shock as everyone else), i think the bigger difference for me is the “vibe” of the show, which isn’t a bad thing. Like, the comics had an actual Bildungsroman style narrative as a really well thought out and cathartic coming of age with its share of darker and serious moments, about twenty somethings learning how to stop hurting each other and not be assholes. The movie was definitely an action movie with snarky and awkward characters and quotable lines. I’ve never played the game, but at least for the anime, it feels definitely a lot more lighthearted and sweet and fresh. As Digiknow pointed out, there’s actually a lot more sweet moments between characters and new dynamics to be seen and are just enjoyable to watch sprinkled in a wonderfully weird plot, akin to something like adventure time (comedy with deeper moments) and even the anime Nichijou (chibi anime absurdity) for me. Envy and Todd definitely remind me of a sexually charged Team Rocket with this one. I really appreciate how everyone has their genuinely sweet moments and aren’t sarcastic or mean all the time. I feel what makes me feel this show isn’t really “Scott Pilgrim” is it feels like less of a coming of age or about improving as a person and fighting for the love of your dreams (at least this season) was more about reconciliation, forgiveness and moving on, which isn’t bad, just a common factor the other sources had. This one feels less rooted in real life to me, which is something the anime and movie both did for me, since it became more of a mystery twist. The key characters are still somewhat realistic but I just find everyone so much more likeable. And I like Roxie kinda gets her justice, she’s become a new favorite for me. I miss Scott being more Micheal Cera-ish but asi es guey. Anyways those are my thoughts

My biggest issue isn’t that Ramona is the main character, as a fan of this series it’s cool to explore other aspects of the universe. My issue is how it was advertised. One of my fav pieces of jewelry was advertised as a larger piece than shown, every single picture shows it to have dimensions bigger than advertised. But when I purchased it was about half the size. Still one of my fav pieces, but had it been advertised as its actual size, I still would have bought it, because I had faith in the name brand. The misdirection was unnecessary, because the show was still quality. Because the name brand producing it has a good track record.

    Spoilers:
Still think it’s good and really like it but just one thing that really pisses me off. And no it’s not that Scott isn’t in his own show for like 5 eps, it does lead to some emotional moments being weaker with him and knives and others compared to the comics, but it’s also an indirect sequel that fleshed out the league. And they wanted to do something different instead of telling the same story for the 4th time. But that’s the problem. It’s an indirect sequel. You’re telling me; after 6 vols of becoming a better person Scott just becomes an evil ex anyways? It takes 6 vols of emotional growth and throws it out the window so they can make the premise and villain work. The villain is the same Scott who learned how to be a better person as he was defeating the league? The only way it could make sense is if he didn’t learn anything in this version. Otherwise it’s just character assassination. And as far as I can tell he’s the same guy from the comics

They should've started with a 1 to 1 adaptation or just expanded it in a different way.
I mean; in this age of propaganda, gender bending and race swapping. A lot of people surely hated the changes just because of the "girl is the hero now" and "main hero is the bad guy and he is a boy" change. Some are just sugar coating it to not get hated and to appear open minded, People are tired of Hollywood/Netflix/Disney (main culprits) shenanigans. This series is a casualty of "Modern story telling".

Bait and switch, I was sold that this was an adaption of the graphic novels, not some alternate take, which at points I struggled to stay engaged, some of the developments with the exes feel very out of left field, like Ex boyfriend 3 going full gay, cause of Wallace hits on him, never was thus suggested, heck he cheated on Envy Adam's with the other female band member, is everyone fluid sexual in Pilgrim's world, heck did Wallace mount Scott at some point in the past well he had a man right there in his bed? Kim Pine also has a forced kiss moment, whatever. I don't get why these fools that finance this content don't follow successful practices when moving stories to other visual mediums, like they do in Japan, keep it consistent, cause you know that story formula is successful, the new audiences can go back to the source and other merchandise, the established audience is happy and will share it with friends, everyone is happy money flows. As is this creates an unnecessary divide in the paying audience, one that did not existent, kinda like what Disney did with Star Wars. As is this may be the only chance to get Scott Pilgrim animated and this is socks, cause the product looks good, but is not what we fell in love with a tale of a slacker that was pursing his own ends in relationships and hooks up with girl that does the same damage as he does and they both have to deal with their baggage to move on. In this new take Scott is mostly to blame and I can't take that. Brian Lee O'Malley could have added more depth to the League of Evil Exes without Taking Off Scott. Yet this bait and switch that cost millions of dollars and won't be loved across the board. And last they should have cash Voice actors for the animated take, cause most of the live action cast sound flat. Whatever this is out. If you like than I'm happy for you, just respect that I don't, cause I'm part of audience too, went to see the film when it bombed in theaters, bought it on Bluray, watched it countless times since, read the books, bought the game on two separate consoles, own other tales O'Malley has crafted. Man I got nothing more to add, peace.

The thing I think has happened here is, Bryan made the original series nearly 20 years ago. Since then he's developed all these characters and extra details. So when he had the chance to make an anime, he created this. An alternate scenario. While the original focused on SP, this one took a different approach and became Ramona.
    Where we tricked? Absolutely.
This felt more like the FLCL series but for Ramona.
Not bad animated, not bad stories, but depending on how much familiarity you wanted, you'll either pike it or you won't. Personally I don't mind it, but I'm disappointed to not see the story I liked animated. However I do like this exploration into the world and life of the exes. BUT I think it could've been a sequel taking place after the movie/comics.
Perhaps the exes respawn and try again and then have their closure. Literally, change the 1st ep, have it be that Scott and Ramona have been together for a bit after book 6 and the exes attack again and 'kill' Scott. You could then have thisnentire anime play out almost the same.
I made my own Svott Pilgrim and Lisa Miller animation and after this, I'm tempted to animate their whole story 😂

This may just be me but I sometimes feel bad when people clamor for a "Definitive Edition" of the story.
O'Maley, while clearly able to reflect on whatever worked and didnt with the original Scott Pilgrim books, doesnt seem to want to erase the interest in people actually picking his books. He is a writer after all; a 1:1 adaptation would eventually lure people away from the og work one way or another.
People also tend to forget that not until late in development, the movie was also going to go its own unique way with a different ending. So clearly it shows that just making the "definitive" Scott Pilgrim story isnt what he wants but rather use each media iteration to express Scott's world in different ways

It was supposed to be like the movie, until the futuristic Scott captured the present Scott, during battle with the 1st evil ex.

I’m a little mixed on the anime. I can respect doing something different and taking it in a new direction, but at the same time having Scott be absent for most of the series was a total fumble for me. Despite his actions and being a scummy character I’m still invested in his character and journey. Not so say the other characters are bad, but it was just missing its core to focus on other aspects of the world and I’m not sure how on board I am with the story we got. Instead of a story of emotional growth and development, we get this weird who done it, time travel mystery. It feels like a weird Else-World comic that’s cool in theory, but you’d never want it to be the status quo. Idk man, I can’t deny the quality, it’s excellently made. But as a Scott Pilgrim story, it just felt off to me.

    • @theassortedhobbyist
      @theassortedhobbyist 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

While the show is a departure from the material, it’s still a story about emotional growth and development, it’s just that the protagonist is Ramona. The emotional core of this rendition is Ramona looking back and think about how she handles breakups in general and how it had an impact on some of the exes and deciding to face all the ups and downs of romantic relationships without running away through her choosing to pursue a relationship with Scott despite all that can go against them. This is a side of Ramona that was explored in tandem with Scott’s story in the comics, but was only explored through the exes’ comments about her and in Scott and Ramona’s reunion after his death, and this show is given the opportunity to flesh out that side of the story and give dimensions to both the exes and their relationships with Ramona. I also love the idea of having an older Scott being the worst evil ex of them all and serving as the final boss for Scott and Ramona’s relationship to overcome, but I will agree that it only works if the audience is aware of Scott’s faults and shortcomings from the comics. If my biggest critique of the Scott Pilgrim movie is that it doesn’t give the audience enough screen time to develop Ramona’s character, then my biggest critique with this show is that it doesn’t give Scott enough screen time to reveal his flaws for the characterization of Future Scott to make sense.

I never read the original comics but watched the live action. I knew of the series a bit, and the live action since the mid 2010s. I heavily enjoyed it despite knowing some things from the comics weren’t in it.
I watched the anime assuming it would be following the comics from start to finish and have stuff from the comics not in the movies, but with what we got, I’m satisfied (yet I wish we got more Scott due to seeing him gradually change, not get his change at the episode 7 and 8). Since we still have the comics to go off of, and the creator was the head of the anime.

All that stuff STILL happened in the comics. Scott has always been kind of dopey. And we know he is TERRIBLE at break ups. Ramona is bad with communication. He thought the space she needed was a divorce. So his dumbass BECAME a evil ex. It's hilarious and poetic. It's a sweet ass semi-sequel. The evil exes were 1 dimensional jerks, and Ramona was always sort of a bitch to them growing up. This is a really cool way to promote growth and show depth of all the characters and give them room to be humans. Instead of pissed off people who get murdered. I thought it was a super rad addition to the lore.

My problem with is with the end. Romona didn’t have a problem running away from love. In every case leaving was the right thing to do. Her problem which was also part of Scott’s: they didn’t handle like adults. They would just go on with their lives not explaining and giving closure to the ex’s.
Rejection sucks no matter what, but with an adult conversation about it; not leaving someone wondering what happened. It won’t necessarily lessen the initial blow; emotions are hard, but it helps everyone grow.
In short Romona saying she wasn’t going to run from love anymore is wrong. If Romona said I’m not going to run from an obligation to communicate, would have been a better super Romona.
Scott just apologizing to knives wasn’t enough. He was know as a jerk to a lot of people. Maybe that will be addressed in another season, but the truth is Scott has a lot more apologizing to do, and not just to ex’s.

I think Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the moment when an author looks at their work and realize that they've grown pass it, not in a bad way but in the way of how humans change everyday meanwhile other things don't, and decide that it's time for it to grown alongside it's author an audience, to be brought up to modernity so to speak. It's a love letter to the original.
I would say that it's similar to things like Fionna & Cake from Adventure Time or in a mote direct parallel... Cinderella III a Twist in Time.

The Rebuild of Eva comparison fits when you view Takes Off as "author examining his work after some life-altering events". Spoilers below obviously.
      - Hideaki Anno become depressed after working on Evangelion and increasingly bitter of Evangelion because the death threats he got during the original run production.
The only person who helped him through that was his wife and Hideaki Anno put a "self-insert" of his wife in Rebuild as Maki in 2.0, and that's why at the end of Rebuild Shinji ends up together with Maki in the real world. The story-arc of Rebuild can be summed up as Anno's accepting the legacy of his own work, re-examining the characters and how the fandoms view them, and ultimately, moving on.
      - Brian O'Malley went through a divorce which hits hard for him because he admitted that Ramona Flowers was inspired by his now-ex wife.
That's why the last two episodes revolved around divorce. Takes Off is basically O'Malley working through his bitterness and anger. The story-arc of Takes Off can be summed up as O'Malley's realizing that there were still issues in Scott-Ramona relationship that were never properly resolved, re-examining their relations and how the fandoms view them,
And in the end, cherishing the good memories. Instead of trying to destroying or preventing it like Old Scott did.
Plus, he's also NEVER interested in proper faithful adaptations of the books because he wants the books to be their own thing. He wants all "Scott Pilgrim" media to be unique but still revolves around the same theme and characters. Whether you agree or disagree with that, that's the creative vision that he has made clear several times even before promoting the show.

Nor did you find any issues with how the spiderman movies changed character and how peter was portrayed, but because the main character was something called Peter Parker you were fine with it.

I'll gladly explain. 02 The Beginning put all of its focus on a NEW character and his Digimon, largely ignoring the entire original cast. This anime shifted focus off ONE of the original characters and instead goes on a deep dive into the REST of the original cast. Super different from 02 The Beginning.
Now, if Davis had minimal screen and 02 The Beginning instead was a rich deep dive into Yolei, Ken, Kari, TK, Cody etc. THEN it would be an ample comparison. And just like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I'd be interested in that.

@@thedigiknow Well given the story they wanted to tell with The Beginning I don't think it would have worked well with any of the old characters. They clearly had them play the role mentor to Rui to help mend his relationship with Ukkomon.
Now this might just be me but I'm not sure what kind of deep dive you can do with the 02 cast at their current age that relates to Digimon. Especially after Kizuna.
I mainly ask this because I'm seeing a lot of people rage over the new Scott Pilgram anime for similar reasons you did. Except they don't care about it focusing on the old characters. They care about how they were mislead into thinking this was going to be a faithful adaptation of the story. And that the focus is on Ramona because they think it's an agenda to push girl boss mentality and devaluing men shit dumb content creators like to spew.
The whole "this isn't what we were promised" angle is why I brought up your opinions on 02 since it felt similar to how people felt about this anime. But people who liked the change for both did like the new focus. Whether it was on a new or old character. It also helped people liked Rui until Meiko in Tri.

Scott Pilgrim was understood by fans to be a remake that ended up being a sort of sequel.
It's just too different. But I get why you would make the comparison given the proximity of my two videos and me liking one and not the other.

Especially since the 02 cast were known to help other digi-destined with all the international kids. I think it just stings more because the 02 kids had been sidelined for years in Tri and Kizuna. As someone who knows the gist of the story before, I think it's great. It's definitely a Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity situation. Obviously it matters that the marketing was weird, but honestly I think it's fine because that's the point. I don't know if the creators promised anywhere that it would be an exact adaptation or if it was just a fan assumption.
I think it's a great shift in focus, re-telling and re-examining of the original story. Some fans will probably complain that it "invalidates" the original or something, which happens in Digimon at times, but at the end of the day the stories of the comics, movie, game, and anime all exist separately. None of them really "invalidate" any other. I enjoyed the characters they chose to focus on, the animation and music was incredible.

"HA HA! DID YOU WANT AN ANIME VERSION OF YOUR FAVORITE COMIC WITH KNIVES COOL RACIST NINJA DAD?! HOW BOUT SOMETHING BETTER?"...I sat barely able to contain my excitement. Ears perked and eyes dewey, Shaking like a lil baby goat that had just been born. " REMEMBER HOW SCOTT PILGRIM BEAT UP ALL OF RAMONAS EVIL X'S?! WELL, PEEP THIS! AHEM* WE KILL SCOTT IMMEDIATELY AND WE SPEND THE ENTIRETY OF THE SEASON WITH RAMONA AS SHE SEEKS CLOSURE...EH?! EHHH!? BETTER RIGHT?!" I shuttered, shattered, and scattered like a million tiny sad roaches. They ruined it. Its unwatchable. They decided to feed me some hackneyed reboot with out anything I could even justify watching. Should of called it," Ramona Reimagined" ...that way i could just say its not for me and not that they ruined scott pilgrim. Sucks.
