One thing I like about this movie: it’s winter despite it not being directly relevant to the plot. It’s rarely ever winter in movies unless it’s connected to the plot, or it’s a Christmas movie.
I mean, it IS Canada. That seems to be plot related.

@9998thegrimeater Yes, but you could make the same argument for summer. Why do movies take place during summer by default? Or in the case of movies involving school, why is it always early fall or late spring, even when the movie has nothing to do with the beginning or the end of the school year?
@@caltheuntitled8021 I'm not sure man, maybe it's easiest for most filmmakers to make a movie look beautiful in the summer but I ain't no filmmaker myself so who knows. But that's true I never really thought about that.

It's funny how you just imagine them "dying", respawning in their house, and they're just like "Nope not doing that again" because we don't see them again after.
Fun fact, the people that Scott kills are transported back to their parents house. So he doesn't actually kill the people that turn to coins, they just wake up super confused on their parents couch.

When Scott is having a dream and Romona shows up, she’s using a “dream highway” to deliver packages faster. It’s in the comic books.
This story is a mix of comic book and video game logic with a splash of magic to boot
It doesn't matter if it's explained in the comics. The rule on Cinema Sins is that only information given in the movie itself matters. Information gained from outside materials isn't factored in.

@@nugget1044 There's one line where Ramona tells Scott that he has a convenient subspace highway in his mind, but it's brushed off as a joke. People that haven't read the comics aren't going to know she's being serious. There were going to be other scenes that explained it more, but they were removed for pacing reasons, so they don't count.
The amount of sins that Cinemasins takes off for good scenes makes me so so happy considering that Scott Pilgrim vs The World is one of my favorite movies ever.

Ramona is actually the only delivery person in toronto and scott didn’t have a dream that he’d meet ramona. In the comics, it’s explained that ramona was using subspace highways through scott and other peoples minds to deliver packages so quickly, that amazon only needed her.
Ok, but Scott is such a terrible person that his shadow self is "actually a really nice guy"
Yeah. Along with the messages about not getting hung up on your exes, or your SO's exes, in some ways the larger message of the movie is basically "How to stop being a total douchebag." It's only at the very end that Scott even starts to become a good person. And yeah, his "negative" self actually being a nice guy is kinda the tipoff there.
Still I think the message pass better in the comic
It's not that his opposite is good, it's that Scott is a zero (due to his ongoing depression). And what is the opposite of zero? Well, it's also zero. This is why his opposite is the exact same person. For further proof of this, remember that his drink of choice is Coke Zero (product placement serves character metaphors) and one of his t-shirts says Zero.
The other interpretation of that scene is that earlier he had learned self respect and doesn't need to fight himself any more

Not mentioning this was the worst sin of all.
It was Lynette in the book, with her cyborg arm. She seemed to be an after thought in the movie since it looked like a dude was playing her.
The purpose of her being so praised at the party and standing alone is intentional.

I absolutely loved the fact Nega Scott has been described as “Cool and nice”. Nudging towards the fact that Normal Scott is the bad/douchebag version.
I’ve never thought of that, that’s actually pretty cool
Now I want a game where you have something like the paragon/renegade meter in Mass Effect and the final boss is a version of your character who's the exact opposite, but if you have enough points into your own and a high speechcraft skill or something you can talk them down.

The fact that it took CinemaSins almost 10 years after this film's release to make a video about it, not to mention how many 'sins' were removed, just shows the quality in the production, scripting and performance. Edgar Wright is a master creator.

Seen from the outside, Wallace's place shouldn't have windows, that makes the jump even more hilarious.
In the Scott Pilgrim universe, no one dies, you respawn at your parents house. So all the guys Scott beat up to be with Ramona are just at home wondering how they got beat by this stick figure in a Sharpie shirt.
And this is never mentioned in the movie. One of the big rules of this channel is that the source material shouldn't have to be used to understand the movie. See: Harry Potter.
If you want to go through the process of examining what's cut from the books, we'll be here all day. There's a reason there's several books.
So it's similar to GTAs universe, when you die you respawn at the hospital, despite falling from a 10 ft building or drowning....or dying in a exploding car.

technically speaking the "dream" at the beginning wasn't a premonition. Ramona was using his head space as a literal path to get from one place to another. It's in the comics and I think it is mentioned in the movie.

Wallace is my favourite character in this movie. He's not an annoying plot device or cringey worthless side character, he's genuinely funny and intriguing, you want a whole side story with him and his love affairs lol!

There was always something about him that I found...familiar(?).
Then I found out he's a Culkin.

I really like him, but I think I like him most as a side character. Him being a main character would be exhausting in a way... like, he's great for cutaway gag type humor but if you had to sit through an hour and a half of nothing but Wallace you'd be tired of him.
Edgar Wright is the one person who could direct a live action anime adaptation and not make it either too cringey or lacking energy.

The premonition thing was actually Ramona using Scott's head space to travel from place to place, allowing her to travel quickly. So when she is talking to him while he's asleep she is actually talking to him; they use it way more in the comics but only briefly in the movies.
It wasn't a premonition that he would run into Ramona, she was literally using his brain as a warp zone so she could deliver packages.
Though you'd have to be a book wanker to know that. Which I am proudly one! 😊

Filming in Canada is pretty typical, especially in movies set in New York, they're almost always shot in Toronto, due to it's similar look to NY but without the traffic.

But the sin wasn’t whether or not what she said made sense, but whether or not it was a valid reason to want to fight somebody. It’d make about as much sense as me beating the crap out of my last girlfriend’s recent ex, because he upset her.
That’s a lot more thorough thought than should ever be applied on a CinemaSins video, but that’s on me 🤷🏻♂️

Yeah as far as I remember that single line is the entirety of the film's exploration of subspace highways. It wasn't a central part of the movie plot at all, imo they mostly added the line as a throwaway to appease the graphic novel fans.
I have to say, it's awesome the way they capture that idea of the "girl that's hard to get, finally showing she has feelings for you by fighting FOR you. Scott has to chase her and earn her the whole time, and finally she says "alright, now its my turn"

And I get why that's done and it makes it arguably the best Pixar movie ever (first time AFAIK that an animated movie has tackled a serious subject with no dialogue) but still, from a sin grading standpoint, it feels a little like cheating.
2:15 it's explained later in the film (and more clearly in the graphic novel) that the reason Scott sees her is because she uses his brain to get around and deliver packages. "You have this really convenient subspace he is highway running through your head. Its like 3 miles in 18 seconds." Forgive me if I got the quote wrong.

Also this franchise has a fairly dedicated fanbase and that comes with a fair amount of them thinking that it is perfect. See Harry Potter, LoTR, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. Nothing is perfect accept, them it what it is not what you want it to be. You will be less disappointed that way. Imagine what this kind of over hyping does to the creator. Either they buy into the hype and become an ass or they are beat down by the expectations of the fans and the fact that no matter what they make from here on out they will never be able to live up to it.

When scotts package is delivered he says something about having a "dream about her" and asks if that was weird. she than specifically states that its not weird because its just her traveling through a subspace highway in his head, she says its like 15 miles in like 3 seconds.
