I live in Michigan where recently, we've been having rain with 35F+ degree weather. Driving around in the rain, through deep puddles, I have had zero issues with my Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 tires. Zero slippage, zero loss of traction. Even when driving around in the middle of a rainstorm when the roads are soaking wet from raining all day, my Nokian Hakka tires have complete traction.
I am sure that compared to my all-season tires (Yokohama Avid Ascend GT), I would have longer ABS stopping distances in the rain if I had to suddenly stop in an emergency. But at least for daily conditions, driving at the speed limit without any sudden emergencies, I have noticed absolutely zero differences in the rain between my all-season and winter tires.
So I'm not sure why they say that tires with the ice symbol are not suitable for rainy conditions. In my own personal experience, rain is no issue at all for a studless Nordic winter tire.
On the other hand, we had icy roads earlier this winter, and I'm sure we'll have them again. So I'm going to keep using my Nokian Hakka tires in Michigan despite all the rain and above-freezing weather.

Hello sevendust62, and thanks for sharing your experience with the Hakkapeliitta R3. That's a great tire!. However I don't think the R3 has the new Ice Grip Logo on it. From my conversation with Nokian, only the Hakkapeliitta 10 and Hakkapeliitta R5 have the new Ice Grip Logo. Your tire has the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake Logo on it, which, as you pointed out, makes it a good choice for the conditions you're dealing with up in Michigan.
