- The two richest horse races ever run ended with spectacular upsets today at Hollywood Park in the inaugural Breeders' Cup series. Wild Again, a 31-to-1 shot, won the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic after a rough stretch run in which Gate Dancer was disqualified from second place for interfering with Slew o' Gold, the heavy favorite who finished a troubled third and may have lost the horse-of-the-year title in the process. Half an hour earlier, an obscure 53-1 shot named Lashkari beat All Along, last year's horse of the year, in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Turf. The unexpected triumphs capped a frenetic afternoon of seven rich, new Breeders' Cup races, four of which were won by favorites and determined divisional championships. Chief's Crown won the $1 million Juvenile for 2-year-olds, Eillo the $1 million Sprint, Royal Heroine the $1 million Mile and, in the day's most impressive performance, Princess Rooney won the $1 million Distaff by seven lengths and covered a mile and a quarter a full second faster than Wild Again did in the Classic. In an early upset, Outstandingly was placed first in the $1 million Juvenile Fillies race on the disqualification of Fran's Valentine.

I was a groom that year for Robert Borick-Four Four Forty Farms- (1983-1990). He was training under John Sadler those days. I remember this day, rode my motorcycle to the track 4 am. It was a beautiful day!

Me and my Dad attended the Inagural Breeders Cup. What I remember most of all was the speakers that day and that day only were put on high. Tom Durkin voice echoed throughout the track. We missed the 1st race Chiefs Crown victory. Due to traffic, butt I could hear Durkins voice in the Forums parking lot. WOW!!!!
With all those great horses running, why would you remember Tom Durkin’s voice

I was there that day. Had Lashkari at 53 to 1! I liked Yves St. Martin and the Aga Khan horses.

GATE DANCER was screwed by that DQ!!! I've seen the overall head-on Many times!! This video doesn't show where Slew O' Gold came over and rammed into Gate Dancer@! He did-twice! Then is when Gate Dancer came over on to him. & Wild Again if you look did lean in just little before the finish.

Seeing my babie's grandsire 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 I also took a chance on her not for racing but everyone told me I was crazy and she turned out to be a winner in 3 different divisions
I was there and had $10 to win on Lashkari...but to this day still think Wild Again should have come down (had $50 on Desert Wine)

she also ran a very good race in the '84 Budweiser Million at Arlington Park. Didn't win, but ran a great race vs. the boys ( The Living Legend John Henry was amazing). Check it out when you get a chance. Great call too!
How did Gate Dancer not win this race? He should have run by Wild Again after the fast fractions, and he should have been moved up as it looked like a Wild Again came out into Slew o Gold. JVB must have been pulling out his hair.
If you've ridden a horse from that line you know once they dig in their heels to win they will literally run on pure adrenaline. They can run for days if they feel like there's a worthy opponent. But only then.

Yes, her 1st race...had a bet on her and Pirates Bounty
I was jumping up and down. It all worked out in the end. Because of this race my Grandfather did really well on this horse.
