Retake means it's not a straight up cover, it's a whole new take on a song (or two songs in this case). Ren's own rap in the middle, yeah :) it was filmed over Christmas last year.
Opening - Back on 74 - by Jungle (UK electronic funk/soul group, song released 2023) Bridge - Naughty bars by Ren (original lyrics 2024) 🔥 Closing - Message in the bottle - by Sting (The Police, song released 1979) Musical arrangement by Ren. Message in the bottle guitar riff added to Back on 74. Call & response from 74 blended into Message in the bottle cover. Both songs connected with an original rap bridge written by Ren. Nice reaction / review, cheers bruv!🍻👍
Took just 10 days from initial song concept to completed video. Filmed in a pub in Brighton (perfect decor !) they had just 2 hours to complete the filming. Filmed by the brilliant Samuel Perry-Falvey
In an incredible BTS available on Ren’s Patreon, this project came together in 10 days from concept to filming in December when Ren was back in the UK for the holidays. Kai is one of Ren’s close friends who typically helps film and upload the BTS to Patreon, but it was great to see him on bass! I agree I would love to see this ensemble do more together! The first rehearsal with the lovely ladies (Sylvia and Scarlett) was 2 days before the video shoot. Their blend together is so lush. Ren did a fantastic job in post-production mixing to make sure the balance made each of them shine. They only had a few hours at the bar in Brighton to film. Samuel Perry-Falvey yet again did a beautiful job filming. A lot of credit goes to Ren’s core group of friends that help turn Ren’s visions into reality. Ren’s voice and style is perfectly suited to Sting/The Police. I agree, I initially was hoping to hear more of Message in a Bottle, but I loved the way he incorporated the guitar riff into Back on 74. And the rap interlude was all Ren. Sometimes Ren will choose songs to cover for their lyrical connection, but I think he was drawn to the Jungle “Back on 74” for the vibe. And I’m glad, because I this ensemble might not have come together otherwise! What amazes me is how different each of Ren’s recent projects have been! I can’t wait for the new album he’s working on!
You have not heard much of Ren's work if you think the rap bars were not Ren's typical work. Not only were there lots of clues to the very familiar nature of some of the bars, but he said at the start that naughty bars are his specialty. Those who have listened to a number of Ren's songs will readily attest to that!! The bit near the end of the rap part was also a Ren trademark, with the bit about money and power... Ren gave a shout out to the originators, Jungle who first performed (a faster) dance version of this last year. He also hints at the Nas retake which he released the week after this. Yes, it being in someone's wheel house is a saying! a good call.
As you're talking about the camera shot, notice that yeah Ren is barely in the shot, but also the 'background' singers are in the foreground. Like he wanted them highlighted and doesn't care about his own glory. Notice also, he lowers his volume to blend in with them, rather than overpower them and push them to the back of the mix. A very Ren thing to do. I also notice that he's smiling so much, because he's genuinely having fun.
I don't know if he doesn't care about his own glory, he gives himself plenty of time to shine and take centre stage in other parts of the video. As he should.
Back on 74 - by Jungle; Bridge - Naughty bars by Ren; Message in the bottle - by Sting (The Police) Fantastic retake 💥 Loved your reaction, thank you ❤
The bass player is Kai. He is Ren's friend/assistant who usually shoots the BTS videos. The backing singers are Sylvia Mwenze and Scarlett Fae. They all did a great job
Think most of your questions have been answered by others. This was filmed last December when he went back to Brighton for Christmas. He also recorded 2 new songs with Chinchilla and with Ruby J, so he was busy 😂. Ren has always said Sting is one of his biggest vocal influences together with Jeff Buckley. Also, Ren is a huge Chilli Peppers fan and John Frusciante is his musical idol 😂😂 Great reaction, can't wait for the next one ❤✌
There are covers, and mash ups, but with the semi-covers, part mash up mix, and original section by the artist (Ren's Rap), I think "Retake" is a good way to call it
Back on 74, a Jungle song, and it's nice how Ren changes it and what he takes from it. Message in a bottle riff introduced in the Back on 74 part. The rap is Ren's but he links it to Back on 74 by incorporating elements from Back on 74 in the girls singing part, in the beginning and the end of the rap. Then we finally have Message in a Bottle from the Police and the girls sing an response from Back on 74 here, when Ren sings "Sending out an S.O.S" , the same phrase that he sang to them in Back on 74 part or "Let it go". All very nice and so good.
Great reaction video as always..... I like the way you pick up on the little subtleties in the music/singing or video. Things that i would overlook, highlighting that they are deliberate choices that Ren made when making this song..... The tie and shirt are also in Money Game 3...... Ren has ADHD which he has said helps him with creating these works of art. Thanks Izzy
I could tell you really enjoyed this. Ren looking fit as ever. Beautiful venue and that vibe from Kai the bass player is so chill. The rap lyrics are all Ren and very much like Ren's typical rap style. He is a cheeky lad and loves fellatio bars. :D
I think it's the same as "he's got it in his locker" but same people say wheelhouse instead of locker, I could be wrong " he's got it in his wheelhouse"could be just 1 sailer telling another where he thinks the captain keeps the rum. Haha
I’m sure that you have found out by now, but the jungle was a tune from a couple years ago that went viral on TikTok. It’s actually a pretty cool song and it’s a bunch of dancers doing some choreography dance, then the rapping part are his words Where he still starts off by saying naughty bars my specialty. Then goes into all his double entendre and his sex scheme which is quite an interesting mix up and very well done. I love the one take videos. Who doesn’t wanna raid Angelina’s Tomb? Idk about Zelda, it’s a bit odd thinking of a cartoon or video game character in that way. I do like how he said he turned Tina from liking women into liking men and I do believe it was said Tina turner was a known bisexual if i remember correctly. Then the ending is lovely He really shows off his vocal range here as he sounds just like sting and in the last line, he seems in that really low voice, which is really nice. I’ve never heard him do it and any other song.
I always worry that reactors suffer from whiplash listening to Ren. 😊 This went from concept to film in ten days when Ren was home last Christmas. Samuel Perry-Falvey directed. They had two hours before the bar opened for business. Ren is wearing most of his bespoke suit from "Money Game 3", which I don't think you've seen yet. Romain just dropped a new song, and Gorran has been posting as well. A very busy Spring! Thanks Izzy!
Izzy, thanks for the reaction. Retake is Ren's version of the songs he mashes up, with the middle rap all his. Back on 74 is by Jungle, a UK group. Fun watching you see this and I always like your observations. Checking out your stuff as well, I like your style Izzy.
The original is by Jungle. they performed back on 74 at this year's Brit awards. It's from the gap advert, that's where I recognised it. Go check it out! It's got a really cool vibe!
It became very obvious here that you have focused a lot on The Big Push busking videos when it comes to Ren if you didn’t think the rap lyrics sounded like his style cause boy oh boy was that 100% Ren as we know him 🤣 He is not the messiah but a very naughty boy 😂
Done over Chridtmas holidays when Ren wrnt home. 10 days from conception to performance. The rap is his own and stitches together the 2 songs. BACK ON 74 by Jungle just released 2023. He added sounds of Message inro the Back on 74 part, i heard it! Ren is a big fan of the Police and has many vocal and range similarities to Sting. The Big Push covered Englishman in New York . Ren does great in that! I really think Ren's voice has matured into something even more amazing than what it was. Is it presumptuous of me to hear/feel the healing in his voice? He has been in treatment for 14 months now. Kai on base is family. He is in charge of Ren's Patreon and this is the first track I've seen him play with Ren. I thought they all did great! The ladies are local Brighton Singers. Scalett Fae has her own page i know. Saw her performing on it with Sylvia at least once.

It's actually the lead instrument in the band while guitar takes the traditional secondary bass role. Other than Primus I agree with you but slap bass can be done right and Primus is a great example.
So much to unpack in one song. A great reaction and you should watch the original Back On 74 by Jungle it is awesome and very well done. The first part of this was from the original, Ren wrote the rap verse, followed by far too little, I agree, of Message In A Bottle. Thanks again Izzy!
I think that the 4:3 aspect ratio was chosen for its retro feel. The bass player is Kai. He is also an excellent guitarist. He sometimes posts his guitar work on his SM at spaaaaaaacey.
Something I’ve noticed - Every cover /remix ren does he makes better than the original He adds his own sauce and it’s just better For example: bongo bong Praise you Englishman in New York Even I shot the sheriff And I actually have gone and listened to each one of the original songs REN kills them all No disrespect fr Just my thoughts ❤
Retake usually means he's rapping over and chopping up someone else's beat. This track is the exception as it's more of a mashup! Not sure why he called it a retake tbh 😂
Hi! Great reaction. Thank you. At the very end I was gonna say I just saw the Red Hot chili peppers and Nashville a couple months ago and they are really awesome and then they were at Bonaroo. I take it you’re not a fan of flea. I was going to say he stole the show. I mean I’m not a guitarist so I don’t know but just his energy and anyone else that sounds like him playing the bass. So I am a fan of TRHCP. Anyway, I’m pretty sure he went home for Christmas for a couple of weeks and they got this video done in two weeks or so.
Retake means it's not a straight up cover, it's a whole new take on a song (or two songs in this case). Ren's own rap in the middle, yeah :) it was filmed over Christmas last year.

Ren likes his naughty bars 😂 as do we renegades
lol yes he does
And so do we ❤❤❤❤
"These lyrics don't sound like Ren" made me laugh 😂❤ love our cheeky Ren
Yes, I think everyone agrees that more Ren singing and, with this combo would be delightful. This entire song is a vibe.

Thoughtful reaction. So much talent in one man! I didn't know how much I needed Ren in my life until Ren was in my life🖤 Greetings from Canada
Hi Brenda! Greetings from England.
That was so well said!! I really feel that too
Can’t really explain it
Such a vibe with a bassist who takes chill to a new level.

I looove how he sings the last "message in a bottle." *fans self*

Thanks! Nice to hear it!
Thanks for another lovely reaction Izzy. I totally agree with you about Ren's voice really coming into it's own when he sings reggae. It soars!
Thanks for watching and for the lovely comment!
The second thing you realise about REN is…he’s a very smart young man. 😊
I see a growing consensus that the rap shall be known as "Naughty bars"
Great reaction video as always..... I like the way you pick up on the little subtleties in the music/singing or video. Things that i would overlook, highlighting that they are deliberate choices that Ren made when making this song..... The tie and shirt are also in Money Game 3...... Ren has ADHD which he has said helps him with creating these works of art. Thanks Izzy

Fingering or picking. I'm cool with that. Sometimes it depends what the song asks for. It's the slap I can't get my head around.

It's cool stuff ain't it. Definitely benefits from repeat listens.

Yes, of course, many are fans of slap bass.
If you like Ren's Sting then Englishman in New York (The Big Push) is a whole song - which I prefer to the original..;-)
Will hopefully get around to that one soon. Nice one.

I'll check that out. If not in a reaction, then on my own. But thanks for telling me about it.
So much to unpack in one song. A great reaction and you should watch the original Back On 74 by Jungle it is awesome and very well done. The first part of this was from the original, Ren wrote the rap verse, followed by far too little, I agree, of Message In A Bottle. Thanks again Izzy!
Thanks Larry!
I think that the 4:3 aspect ratio was chosen for its retro feel. The bass player is Kai. He is also an excellent guitarist. He sometimes posts his guitar work on his SM at spaaaaaaacey.
What is spaaaaaaacey?

@@Colleen_OH oh! Got ya! I’ll do that. Thanks.
I believe it was filmed right after Money Game 3 . He is wearing the same outfit.
MG3 was filmed in June 2023 and this one after Christmas 2023 in Brighton. It is indeed his only suit and tie. ❣❣
Something I’ve noticed -
Every cover /remix ren does he makes better than the original
He adds his own sauce and it’s just better
For example: bongo bong
Praise you
Englishman in New York
Even I shot the sheriff
And I actually have gone and listened to each one of the original songs
REN kills them all
No disrespect fr
Just my thoughts ❤
Thanks for sharing them! And thanks for being here for my journey of checking them out.
Not Ren related but, you remind me of Charle Hunnam looks with a Johnny Depp voice. Its a good combo!
I can see the Charlie Hunnam. You're the first person to say Depp, and I'll take it. Love that guy!
In your own time watch the short video of behind the scenes of this ,it's good.
The rap is actually the only part that is Ren's lyrics. :)
Thanks for filling me in, Tanya!
❤❤❤
❤
Retake usually means he's rapping over and chopping up someone else's beat. This track is the exception as it's more of a mashup! Not sure why he called it a retake tbh 😂
Interesting. Thanks.
Hi! Great reaction. Thank you.
Attaching links to a compilation of BTS shorts you might like (shows a bit of Ren's creative process) and the original Back on 74 music video by Jungle (the choreography and dancers are phenomenal)

Thanks Barbara! Appreciate it!
Nope ren's words for the rap.
I’m sure that you have found out by now, but the jungle was a tune from a couple years ago that went viral on TikTok. It’s actually a pretty cool song and it’s a bunch of dancers doing some choreography dance, then the rapping part are his words
Where he still starts off by saying naughty bars my specialty.
Yeah, TRHCP ain't for me.
