Sewing with sweater knit fabric without stretching the fabric is possible. Note: Using stay tape is for areas that you don't want to stretch, like shoulders and zipper area.
Thank you Anita for this great video; You have taught and given confidence to a 73 year old lady to try this out. I am self taught, but now there are so many new fabrics, I am almost like a newbie learning to sew them. Again Thank you.
Yaaayyy, Linda! YES! We are always learning. I'm so glad you found the tips helpful and are inspired to give it a try. Have fun with your next project.
This video is so incredibly helpful. I am so glad I watched this first before beginning a cardigan project. I have sewn clothes for years, but I work mostly with woven fabrics like linen. The sticky dots idea is just brilliant and I will use that for other tricky fabrics that I don't necessarily want to mark on as well. I feel more confident about working with the beautiful pink sweater knit fabric I just picked up after hearing your tips. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. ☺
Don't even have a machine yet, but this vid dropped into my suggestions and after watching I subbed because your instruction is so thorough! I used to see years ago and would like to return to it. Will be binge watching! Thank you!
I enjoy your tips on sewing, tools and fabrics. I've been sewing for over 60 years give or take a few years because I go great guns sewing and then get distracted and set aside my sewing.. Now I'm getting back to sewing again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Janet
I am sooooo/sew happy I have found you here on TH-cam university! I have been binge watching your videos. You are by far the best educator around! I am a professional seamstress, retired, and love your techniques. Thank you for educating correctly. I have seen so many on here that are just plain sloppy and don’t explain or demonstrate correctly. It makes me furious that they are teaching so many new sewists that will follow their directions and get frustrated when their results are not what they expected and give up entirely on sewing, thinking they just can’t do it! In reality they can be successful with the correct instruction. You do a great job here, Thank you!
Thank you so much for your feedback. I LOVE teaching beginners and it really encourages me when I hear that they are appreciating the details. My videos tend to be longer than most because I try not to skip steps. I teach the way I learn. Give me all the details and explain why. So far my teaching style is helping a lot of people, so I will continue. 💕
Thank you for this video! and thank you for explaining so clearly and completely! After watching your 2 videos on sewing sweater knits, I now have the courage to tackle my own project.
Excellent ideas and demonstration - I bought 2 rather large pieces of sweater knit a couple of years ago and have been afraid to do anything with them because I've never sewn with sweater knit. I took notes and will try these directions.
Hi Anita..I just saw your content for the first time. Great advice on the sweater. I just subscribed and will binge watch your content. I'm excited to learn all I can..just started sewing again after years away. Definitely need to be refreshed☺🤗
This is an amazing video! You are a sewing gem! I've been searching for clear directions on how to sew knits and I believe this is the absolute best video that can be found! 🙌🏽THANK YOU!
Thank you again Anita for another fabulously detailed and highly informative video! You make me smile wide with your darling modeling of your adorable sweater 💕
Thank you for these tips! Your demonstrations are appreciated too. I always love seeing what you are saying. I have some beautiful sweater knits that I’m sure costs me some money and your tips will be very useful! Cheryl
Anita, thank you for this video, it was very informative. Also, I want to say thank you for your book (Step Into It). It made me cry at times and other times with many tears of joy. God has truly Blessed you and all those who are lucky enough to know you.
Oh, Julie, you're very welcome. I'm glad you liked the video. Thank you so much for reading my book. It makes my heart smile to hear that you enjoyed the read.
You are amazing. You remind me so much of my high school teacher...the one that taught me "how to learn", influencing my life from then on. Believe it or not...I am sewing on a Rocketeer and I have an old Nelco serger. You are helping me too, even without the new technology.
These were all great suggestions. I particularly appreciated the picture illustrations you showed. Using the sticky dots is a great suggestion as well....thank you so much. I'm ready for my two piece sweater outfit now 😊
Thank you!! I rushed threw a shirt for my son- it was a waffle knit in an already oversized pattern and it was huge! I thought I could just serge away and make a quick job of it but these tips are SO helpful.
Actually, either one will work. But I would probably choose based on the size of the opening and fabric type. If it's a really wide opening on thin fabric, I would probably go with stay tape. For smaller openings and thicker fabrics, clear elastic works well.
Lovely sweater thank you for all the wonderful advice on cutting and love the sticky dots and the trailers tack your a wonderful seamstress wonderful idea for the clear elastic for stabilizing
Thank you. I am one of those people intimated be sewing any and everything that have a stretch now thanks to you I will definitely try to sew something with a stretchy fabric. Marcella
Being Summer, here in DownUnder country, I will keep/save this video for next Autumn as I've never had the confidence to sew knits, but I love them. thanks heaps..Cheers!
Super helpful. I learned so much from the 2 videos on sweater knits. Thanks so much! I wish I better understood the pros and cons of various stabilizers. That's what I need to learn next.
Thank u sooo much for these tips. This is my first time making a sweater with expensive knit fabric & u made me so confident in doing it. I need to get the supplies u mentioned too. Thank u again sis.
Very good tips. I am currently making the Toastter Sweater using only my new Janome Coverpro 3000. It does a chain stitch I can use to sew regular seams and if I make a mistake, I can pull one thread and, viola, the whole seam unravels in a snap!
Excellent instruction video. So very clear, step by step. I just bought a walking foot for my machine; I don't have a serger or space to put one. But this will really help with my first knit project. Thank you!
Anita this video is excellent. Your instructions are clear and easy to follow. Question, however,... When you serged the edges, do you also serge the stay tape??
I’m considering upcycling some old knit dresses and also using some sweater knit fabric. This was very informative and helpful. Hopefully I can make a few things without any issues 😊
Thanks so much for this tutorial, I just found the cutest sweater knit and would hate to ruin it. Now I’m confident I can make it to last. Thanks for all you do. You are appreciated.
You are so stylish 👸🏽!!! I am sewing a knit fabric dress at the moment, I am not using the weights but I hand tacked instead to keep fabric from moving around before pinning the pattern pieces onto the fabric. I am old school and a quality scissor user instead of the rotary cutter, it’s more user friendly for me. I have an industrial sewing machine so the sewing of the fabric actually works on a straight stitch without pulling or deforming the fabric. What I will take away from your advice is using a form of tape to stabilise the seams as I stitch along. As I have some home sewing experience and trained in theatre costume making I will do the hem by hand and use the overlocker to neaten the seams but have the seams pressed flat open, it means I will be able afterwards to adjust up or down the size of garment as my body changes. It’s the the costume making experience (garments get reused over and over again). Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of sewing with sweater knit fabrics as I have learnt something new from you today.
Loved the tips for sewing sweater knits! I've had a couple of "fails" when using the looser-knitted fabrics, and now I know how to remedy this in the future. Thanks. Also, I've found that some of the knits are more weighty than you might think, and their own weight often pulls them out of shape.
Thank you, I watched the other stretchy video first, and now I feel temporarily overwhelmed with all my newly gained knowledge. I've only had an overlocker for a little while, so much appreciate the extra info!

Thank you!! I rushed threw a shirt for my son- it was a waffle knit in an already oversized pattern and it was huge! I thought I could just serge away and make a quick job of it but these tips are SO helpful.
Also would you use clear elastic or stay tape for bands for a neck opening? The V neck I made really stretched out too.
I’m glad you found the tips helpful!
Actually, either one will work. But I would probably choose based on the size of the opening and fabric type. If it's a really wide opening on thin fabric, I would probably go with stay tape. For smaller openings and thicker fabrics, clear elastic works well.
