I think there was an element of underestimating Michigan all year. There are a couple of reasons for that, but I think it’s predominantly due to a lingering mindset of looking at Michigan as though they were the Michigan teams of four or five or six years ago. That just wasn’t the case. I remember watching Michigan play a game in about week four or five. And I remember saying that this Michigan team was way better than last year‘s team. And I even remember saying that they had a shot at the national championship. I think you made an interesting statement in a recent video when you said that Michigan doesn’t try to score 40 points, they just get seven or 10 points ahead of you then run the clock out. And that’s exactly right. It causes Michigan to win games in a dominating fashion but for the scoreboard to be sort of possibly close for most of the game. Michigan actually often breaks these games open at the end when the opponents have to take high risks in order to try to get back in it. And that’s what happened against Washington. Michigan was dominating that game. It didn’t look like Washington was hopelessly behind, especially when they were only seven points down. But their situation was worse than it seemed. They had to make big plays in order to score a touchdown. Then they had to stop Michigan from scoring, which was unrealistic, given their run defense. So they have to do the big place success thing all over again. Who knows how many times they have to do that to actually win the game. By the fourth quarter, Penny was starting to walk around as though he just been in a car accident. I never want to see a guy hurt, but you could see that the physical toll was reducing his effectiveness. And all. of this was by far the most probable way the game would go. If you played this game 10 times, eight of them would play out like this with Washington, limping around by the end, sort of plausibly in range of somehow coming back, but with no great prospects of pulling it off.
Your saying Washington couldn't stop Michigan from scoring.... You do realize Washington has Michigan struggling on 3rd down, had them punt seven times correct?
Michigan fan here. I do enjoy your videos. I told a friend before the Rose Bowl that whoever won that game was winning it all. So I agree with your take on the matchup. You nailed it. Thanks for the solid takes. Good luck to the Tide next year. Go Blue!
I heard a michigan fan say what happened to Washington is what happend to Michigan two years ago against Georgia. If we wanna play ball on the west coast, we gotta win the trenches
Washington showed better than Michigan did against Georgia. Not only did the Georgia front seven completely stop Michigan's run game, leaving them reliant on a pass attack headed by a very ordinary game manager QB, but Georgia's offense scored over the top a couple of times early in that game, which completely disrupted the Michigan defense. As a Blue fan, it was really tough to watch.
Your impressions were correct. Michigan's dominance score for the game was 72.3404% and their average in-game dominance score was 72.3245%. The way these scores are calculated, they should NOT be this close to one another. The idea being that the game dominance score should increase as a team pulls away from their opponent. We don't see that here. Michigan dominated basically from start to finish.
@@Johnadams20760 It's a formula I came up with that takes into account how wide the margin of victory is compared to how many total points were scored in the game. The idea being that it measures how much one team was able to impose their will on the other team. It started with the formula (Points Scored - Points Allowed) / (Points Scored + Points Allowed). But then I had to adjust the formula in order to get rid of negative scores and scale everything from 0 to 100. A score of 0 means you GOT shut out. A score of 100 means you shut out your opponent. A score of 50 means the game ended in a tie (which doesn't happen in NCAA). The average dominance score is these same principles in conjunction with a little Calculus (I'm a HS math teacher) to determine the average value of a team's dominance as the game progresses from start to finish. The game dominance score is just calculated by entering the final points from each team into a formula. The average in-game dominance is more complicated. That's why I found it so strange that for this game those two scores ended up being so very close to one another. For a metric I made up last fall, it was pretty good at correlating with the top teams throughout the year. That being said, I only entered data for teams that were in the top 10, so I don't have that data for every team.
@@cameronbrennemanoutdoors Huh. That is not how I came up with the formula. But after doing a quick simplification of my formula, it is equivalent to % of points scored. That will make my spreadsheets easier to fill in for next season. The average in-game dominance, which I believe to be a more meaningful and accurate metric, will still be different...usually. Mathematically speaking, the following is true for all values of Pa (points allowed) and Ps (points scored). my formula - > 50(1 + (Ps - Pa)/(Ps + Pa)) = 100(Ps/(Ps + Pa)) < - % of points scored
Very well said . That Michigan defense was built to beat teams like Washington, because 2 years ago that's what ohio st was . A passing attack with great receivers. And the blue print was set from there, create pressure with the front 4 and play zone.
Honestly, what this game exposed me to is the fact that the vast majority of casuals and media people just don't watch the games. I spent a whole week listening to people talk about Michigan like it was 1977 and we've never seen a forward pass. I knew we'd beat Washington because we beat OSU in 2021 and 2022 and those were the same teams with much better linemen and linebackers. We practice against a pro-style shotgun spread every day, to be ready for OSU. And don't even get me started on people telling me "Penix can throw to guys even when they're covered, just watch the Texas game" - man, I *did* watch the Texas game and what I saw was DBs getting burned enough that even though they were next to the receiver they never had time to turn back and LOOK at the ball. That's not throwing guys open, and it's not good coverage either. I knew Michigan would be facing the ball on those passes and look? That's what happened, and Penix wasn't throwing ANYONE open when the DB had eyes on the ball.
Football casuals are like the Airsoft warriors and Call of Duty military experts, thinking they know one tenth of one percent about serving in the military. The amazing fact was that everyone was panicking prior to the season about the CB2 position.
Not trying to kick the bees nest, because I agree that Michigan was the team to beat this season (this coming from a NOT UM fan). What the heck happened last year vs TCU? I watched that game and, yes, it was a thriller for general football watching, but with how the championship went it just didn’t make sense they didn’t beat the brakes off TCU. But good on UM for pulling it together this season, it made up for the last two years in spades.
The short answer is "we didn't respect TCU's top tier athletes and just assumed they were all scrubs, turned the ball over, and choked." The long answer is that TCU's defense, a 3-3-5, worked by flowing into a seven man run fit, and Michigan needed to run trap and counter, but instead we spammed duo for most of the first half - which is literally *the* run play, TCU's defense wants to play against. We needed to get them moving one way, and then go the other, but we refused because "they're giving us free doubles on their three linemen" - which is what TCU wanted us to think. Before the game, Vance Bedford was on TH-cam saying "duo won't work, but we can kill them with counters and movement" - wish Michigan's staff had watched that video. The moral of the story is probably "respect your opponents." If you watched us running against Bama, we recognized their ability to flow to the ball, and worked to manipulate their linebackers into the wrong gaps. Against TCU we just said "lol, manball." Once we started respecting them, we outscored them. But you spot a team 3 scores in the playoff, and you're probably going to lose. Barely, but lose nonetheless.
@@ninaillingworth3947 that’s about as good a description as I’ve seen anywhere. It’s silly to think Harbaugh wouldn’t come up with a better plan than that. But I guess it’s the ‘fool me once…’ kind of scenario
I picked Michigan by two scores, and Penix would get exposed. It's not like we didn't run him out of the B1G (both his knees and shoulders busted)......just like Bo got ran out of the SEC. Playing in the PAC against JV defenses is one thing......Michigan, Ohio, Penn State, Iowa, MD is quite another. And TX is even worse than the PAC.
It’s weird… I was more stoked after the Rose Bowl win than winning the national championship . I couldn’t sleep after the Rose Bowl, no problem sleeping last night. I think deep downI knew that, you’re right, the Rose Bowl was the de facto national championship. I got a bit nervous when we couldn’t move the ball in the third quarter but, we never coughed up the lead. It just felt anti-climactic. I’m happy of course (UM alum!) but, the Rose Bowl just felt bigger.
Same here. Went to the game and the buzz was real. Laid in bed that night smiling and just couldnt believe it actually happened. Going into the playoffs Alabama was the team I was most worried about, and the fact they beat them and HOW they beat them was incredible. But thats what was different with this Michigan team this year compared to them prior. When it came down to it, they clutched up and got the job done. In the Ohio State game I waiting for the choke, but they got the interception. When Michigan was down against Alabama, they got down the field, and then got their 7 in overtime. And once against the defense did their job to finish. Same with Washington.. They could've had a chance but Michigan clutched up and got the stop. Aint ever gonna forget this year. So happy to follow a Michigan team that played their game when the pressure was on. So much sadness and crying watching them since the 2000s lol. GO BLUE
Dude because you know even on a “down year” bama is a threat. PAC12 teams have never matched up well against BIG or SEC teams. Oregon the only one so most people were unsure of Washington for good reason
Rose bowl felt waaaay bigger as a Michigan fan. I wouldn't have even cared that much if we lost the natty funny enough. The win over bama and a CFP playoff win was more important.
You are correct - it was a matchup nightmare for Washington. Michigan always wears teams down and usually has big runs in the second half. When they started gauging them in the first half I knew it was over. Refs did play a little bit into it. Both teams were holding and they were letting them play. That favors Michigan more. Michigan was 1-10 on third downs....and didn't really play that well.
National championship record 303 yards rushing disagrees with your they did not play well assessment. Had it been 303 passing for McCarthy you would not have said that. Your just not used to seeing a team rush for 300 yards
I was lucky enough to attend that game.... relatives flew down from Seattle and got me a ticket...had a great weekend with them..but they were firmly in the Penix cult and belived he would magically win the came somehow.. It was weird watching them sit their in denial about the reality of that game..... I said all year Michigan is the most complete team.N o one would have beat Michigan last night. BTW I am an LSU guy... /SEC elitist. The best team won!
I'm a 〽️ guy..but was born in Baton Rouge..just moved my mom back there after 35 years in Michigan. I always grab LSU souvenirs when I'm there. I'm still here with my sister and brother though in Michigan. Go Blue〽️🙌
As an Ohio State fan it sucks seeing Michigan win a natty. I hope they use this as motivation. Rivalry aside congrats to the fans seeing your team win a natty is one of the best feelings
From a Michigan fan thank you. I was actually Pulling for you guys in your bowl game. It was hard to do, but I wanted the second to lose. And if you guys had Fleming, Harrison and Mcord that game goes way differently. Sec got to sec What defense is like in the B1G this past year. And the top 4 teams all Play defense extremely Well. I feel Sorry for Washington, Oregon, and usc coming into the B1G, they will struggle against Iowa, Rutgers and even Illinois.
Washington, deserves all the accolades, and respect that they rightfully deserve. Huge props to them, and their fanbase! Let the haters hate. Michigan earned their victory. It was a refreshing change to see two teams, not from the SEC, represent a previously underrepresented segment of the country, bask in the glow of competitive glory.
The serial position effect. People have a cognitive bias when playing or watching or participating in something for a long time, they remember the beginning and the end much better than the middle.
At least the blowout didn't happen until the 4th quarter... If you are really happy for us Michigan fans, Matt, make sure it doesn't drop a foot of snow on Ann Arbor on parade day...😅😅😅
As the selection date for the CFP approached, all your heard from fans of the teams looking at missing the playoff was that "Michigan hadn't played anybody". There was some truth to that claim, but the fact that they played a fairly weak schedule in no way meant they did not handily beat those teams as you might expect a potential national champion to do. Most of those games saw the starters benched midway through the third quarter, so you never saw a bunch of 63-3 final scores, and MIchigan's reliance on the run game moved the game clock and limited their offensive possesssions. J.J. McCarthy's season stats were unimpressive due to the success of the run game combined with his being pulled from games early. Overall, the weak schedule helped Michigan keep their first stringers healthy and ready to play for the nattty. Blue could have turned into FSU if McCarthy ripped up a knee trying to win an earlier game. Playing weaker teams and not clobbering them by 50-60 points with a fancy passig attack hid Michigan's excellence from casual fans who only saw the names of the opponents and the final scores of the games.
The one in the lower right box was just too obvious, and it was Michigan's only big pass all game, while it was still one score game in the 4th quarter. It was a huge blown call
As Georgia fan, I’m not mad that we lost to bama, what I’m mad about is how a 3pt loss at the end of the season in the SEC keeps us out from contending for a championship. I’m glad there’s a 12 team playoff because both SEC teams in the championship game this year would’ve made it no matter the outcome and you can’t say that about any other conference either.
It was just a rare year to have a few undefeated teams. They had no choice but to put Washington and Michigan in the playoff. The could not still have Georgia ahead of Alabama and in my opinion both FSU and Texas should have been ahead of Georgia because they were the conference champion. I do think the 12 team playoff will be better and it would have been more interesting to see Oregon, Ohio State and Georgia in an expanded playoff this year. With the new conference alignment I think we will see 8 of the 12 teams from the SEC and Big10 combined every year.
They would have brought osu and Penn state into the playoffs. You’re correct that Iowa wouldn’t have been there, but our big three teams were all in the same conference. Won’t be like that next year.
That was the biggest snub of the year if... committee punished a team for playing in extra game that they lost by three points and knocked them out of the number one spot
I was 9 years old last time Michigan won it, my son is 9 years old. I just think thats a wild correlation for us. I hope he doesnt have to wait till hes 35 to see us win it again.
The SEC has only 4 loses in the CFP against non-conference opponents and all of them are against Alabama. Those teams are: 2014 Ohio State, 2016 Clemson, 2018 Clemson, and 2023 Michigan, who all won the championship those years.
Yo matt, Georgia fan here , yea we didn't beat bama this year but last time i checked we didnt beat bama in the sec championship in 2021 but got another chance in the title game andd.. we know how that outcome turned out 🥴
Mich fan been watching your videos for year. Love them. I think playoffs proved committee right. Both semis were great. Wash struggled yesterday but so did Bama
@6:15 -- 'All about matchups'. This is exactly why Washington lost the game. This was an historic season for the Huskies, because they managed to rise to the level of a middling version of what Ohio State is every single year. Harbaugh's entire tenure at Michigan has been focused on countering this exact kind of team (....well, really, a superior version of this exact kind of team)
Ohio State actually played Michigan the toughest this year and the only team that outgained them, but the two interceptions killed OSU chances. That Michigan defense spoiled the OSU Big 10 hopes
Michigan's keys to the game were to manage the clock, pressure Penix to keep his feet from setting, don't give up the big play, and dont make mistakes. They didnt do that against Bama as well and got lucky to come out on top in a toss up game. Watching every snap of every Michigan game this year, I didnt have any fear the whole game after the first touchdowns. Moore was keeping his playa in his back pocket and unloaded in the 4th. It was honestly a cat and mouse game. I have all the respect for Washington and Penix especially, the latter left literally nothing on that playing field. It will be a treat seeing that WR room tear up fields on Sunday. Their season was a fairy tale season winning the close games and games against big opponents. It didnt look like the got desperate during the game until the last 7 minutes. Trust in the players, trust in the coaches, that is special.
💯 This game felt like Michigan was in command the whole time, even when it was close. Didn’t bet the game because I was a 2x loser previous week. So much more enjoyable watching a game stress free. Great season overall.
Washington was 14-0 with one of the best if not the best offenses in the country. Also they beat the team that beat the team that they are all talking about so I wouldn't worry about it. Michigan was far Superior than any team this year and they were the best and they have the trophy to prove it. Washington was the second best and they had a 14-1 record to prove it. Don't get me wrong Georgia is one of the best but they lost the game that would have got them there
Yeah Matt, you're right about the real National Championship. To the Georgia zealots, if the Titanic missed the iceberg, it would have made it to NY, but, alas.
Matt, you’re correct about Michigan. You’re correct about Washington. And, you’re correct about the long off season of College football. As a side note, the SEC is the only conference the Big 10 fears. While Clemson did win two National Championship, the Big Ten is also in the mix. Perhaps we might see an Ohio State Alabama matchup some time next year.
Bro every team holds every play. It’s whether the refs can catch it or not. Welcome to football, sincerely a person who actually played college football.

Georgia fans are delusional. They still feel the Bama loss was a fluke. Bama beat you picks clearly. Your 1-6 against Bama. You all didn't deserve to be in the mix. Bama deserved to be there. So did Texas and Washington. Get over it. Your chance to 3 peat is over, done, capute.
We lost to bama and we didn't get the 3 peat ok cool but we still deserved a shot to be still in college football playoffs, you cant say we werent a top 4 team in college football 🤔 this same thing happened when we won in 2021 and once we played bama again in the natty we won🤷🏾♂️

I wanted to see Georgia too. Bama was a great consultation prize. I won’t say Georgia got robbed, losing the last game you play always leaves you at the mercy of the committee. I’ve liked Clay Travis, probably mostly because of his Covid rants , instead of his athletic insights. Now after seeing that tweet you just showed ,I’ve lost respect of him & think of him as an SEC lackey.
Michigan had 4 paths to win. Run the ball, jj pops offs, Michigan bleeds the clock and kicks multiple fgs. Or the defense shutdowns Washington and gets points if turnovers. Washington only had Michael has their only chance.
The Huskies were worn down in the 4th quarter. Michigan just kept coming. They were ready to play a complete game start to finish. Big 10 teams better be ready to work. It will be a steady grind next season. I thought USC would be the team to watch but Washington and Oregon might challenge Ohio State and Michigan State. I can't wait.
Wait so your takeaway from the Big10 vs pac-12 last night was the Big10 better be ready!?!? The big ten was laughing at your oline and d line last night. Your lucky it wasn’t 45-13. I’m being dead honest right now too.
Washington/Oregon and USC need to be ready for late October early November cold snaps. Big House, Camp Randall, Minnesota etc are no joke late fall. Can’t wait to see how USC handles the cold and snow.
Wow, those three big time pac 12 teams coming into the B1G are all Losing their QBs. And it took Oregon and Washington to have a 6th year senior to be good. They will struggle with Iowa, Rutgers, and Illinois. I really Hope you Aren’t confusing michigan state with university of Michigan. State might beat you guys next year too.
How many holds were called in the Rose Bowl? None. Refs don't call holds unless it's really obvious, and the one they called against UW was pretty obvious (and they called defensive holding on M as well). That don't mean they aren't happening. You telling me the UW Oline never held M's DL that was crashing on them every play? Refs simply won't call most holds so no use crying about it.
CFP committee should have advanced alabama over michigan to the national championship. the bottom line is that alabama has two quality losses that michigan can't say they have
Penix was off all night. But I feel like Michigan could have ran it nonstop with the gaps they were opening. 3 downs to get 10 yards the law of averages was in their favor. With Penix being off and Michigan having great success on the ground it was a recipe for a crappy game
Washington would have been more competitive against Georgia. Michigan truly had the best defense this year. That’s why it was so lopsided. And we all know an elite passing attack is Georgia’s weakness. If Alabama doesn’t lose their WR in the natty they win. If OSU has MHJ in the CFP they win.
Michigan was definitely the better team. That said, Wash got screwed by that BS holding call that brung back the huge downfield throw. They were about to tie it up and the refs canceled it. Even the ESPN radio broadcasters were appalled.
Washington’s offensive line held Michigan’s defensive line almost every play and never was called once. As a Michigan fan, I’m still on cloud 9. Always appreciate the honesty, Matt. Go Blue!!!〽️
People can complain about the missed holdings all they want. I watched the same game and Washington got away with multiple holdings as well. Happens every week to every team. Get over it. Fans of losing teams look for clarification as to why they’re losing all the time. That game could’ve been a lot worse for Washington. The only drive Washington threatened the defense was a short field and scored. That same drive is has one of the PI plays there complaining about. That ball wasn’t catchable regardless, didn’t matter anyway because Michigan had 3 penalties and gave up a touchdown that drive anyway.
4th quarter 7 minutes left and it was a 13 - 20 game. Washington had missed pass connections all night plus the refs missed tons of calls. It’s bad when Penix had to call out holds mid game while he was passing😂 Michigan just didn’t make those same mistakes and was able to get their running game going while Washington had mental errors that’s why they won.
I doubt 3-4 penalties could’ve equated to 24 points. Michigan still would’ve won, they set the pace and controlled the game the same way Washington did to Texas but in a more dominant fashion.
People are naturally going to hate Matt, u kno why, cause their team loss💯 i seen the stupidity of people to consistently go against the best defense in college football.
That's exactly what I said
Absolutely correct. I feel Ohio knows that now and doesn’t know how to fix that with what they have. That’s why many of the players are leaving Ohio.
@@williamselby-nq5tkis Ohio State right now working to outmatch the gap against Michigan again like they did in 2018 and 2019?
"But UM never seen an offense like Washington THIS year" 😂😂
Honestly, what this game exposed me to is the fact that the vast majority of casuals and media people just don't watch the games.
The short answer is "we didn't respect TCU's top tier athletes and just assumed they were all scrubs, turned the ball over, and choked."
The long answer is that TCU's defense, a 3-3-5, worked by flowing into a seven man run fit, and Michigan needed to run trap and counter, but instead we spammed duo for most of the first half - which is literally *the* run play, TCU's defense wants to play against.
Yeah I think that the rose bowl winner would have beat either team out of Texas or Washington
I couldn't agree with you more

I thought I’d never see myself pulling for Michigan as a OSU fan. Couldn’t be more proud to see Michigan dominate and bring a natty to the Big 10.

There were several holds that washington got away with too. Look on every play in every game you can find a holding call if you're looking for it.
As long as the calls are consistent I'm not gonna complain.
Next year the Big10 will have USC, Oregon, UCLA and Washington. I could easily see 4 or 5 Big10 teams making the playoff next year.@@dcouwlier
As a Georgia this is facts
That was the biggest snub of the year if... committee punished a team for playing in extra game that they lost by three points and knocked them out of the number one spot

Go Blue Baby! Loved The Content Matt All Year, HAIL!
The SEC has only 4 loses in the CFP against non-conference opponents and all of them are against Alabama. Those teams are: 2014 Ohio State, 2016 Clemson, 2018 Clemson, and 2023 Michigan, who all won the championship those years.
Michigan had more yds running (303) to Washington’s total yds (301). Lol! 😂
Yo matt, Georgia fan here , yea we didn't beat bama this year but last time i checked we didnt beat bama in the sec championship in 2021 but got another chance in the title game andd.. we know how that outcome turned out 🥴
It’s not 2021. You don’t have the same players on your team and Michigan has a lot of players who played in that game still on their team.
Alabama went into overtime and had the game one with 2 minutes left. What are you talking about? It's about the final score.
Take away the two interceptions and OSU possibly wins@@royhill9892
Harbaugh wasn't coaching and JJ was playing hurt/limited at QB for Michigan versus OSU. Moral of the story is Michigan's D can't be denied.
Great shit Matt ,go blue what a season ,no one was stopping team144 not the big10 or NCAA .....
Will see Bama next year at their house. Will see how the Mach up goes Matt. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Every Dawg has its day.

Matt, you’re correct about Michigan. You’re correct about Washington. And, you’re correct about the long off season of College football. Looking at those team stats how was Washington the #2 team in the nation? Because they beat Oregon twice?
there was also non calls on washington, the refsmade good and bad calls evenly on both teams honestly.

Washington/Oregon and USC need to be ready for late October early November cold snaps. Big House, Camp Randall, Minnesota etc are no joke late fall. Can’t wait to see how USC handles the cold and snow.

How many holds were called in the Rose Bowl? None. Interesting because before the playoffs started Vegas said that the winner of Bama and Michigan would win the Natty.
Dear college football, Oregon apologizes for gifting washington their amazing season, we hope you will forgive our sins, may we never choke again
Oregon chokes every year. No team is better at getting your hopes up and then letting you down.
Can you talk about the EA sports college game and the UFL now that the seasons over?
I was waiting on Marty’s bitter sweet goodbye.
Michigan was holding Washington wide outs on every drive Washington had
Washington wasn't getting called for nothing.
If that hold didn't happen, penix would've gotten blown up and there wouldn't have been a down field completion
Dude above me is right. That hold saved penix from getting sacked and was what allowed him the time to make the throw in the first place
It was a holding call . You think the defender just fell down on his own lol. Pennix would have been sacked if he didn’t do that
OSU tried to create drama? What do you mean by that?
Washington’s offensive line held Michigan’s defensive line almost every play and never was called once. As a Michigan fan, I’m still on cloud 9. Always appreciate the honesty, Matt. Go Blue!!!〽️
Michigan gets looked down a lot. Maybe we can keep it going next year .
Washington was like Baylor in 2014. They can score 60 points a game, but they will give up 61
People can complain about the missed holdings all they want.
I think college football should do a off season tournament of the national champion and other bowl winners outside of the playoffs

Washington going to the Big 10 is the best thing to happen for them. They'll recruit the trenches
Washington was a bad matchup for Texas. Michigan was a much better matchup for us precisely because our run defense was so good.
I doubt 3-4 penalties could’ve equated to 24 points. Michigan still would’ve won, they set the pace and controlled the game the same way Washington did to Texas but in a more dominant fashion.
Didn’t talk about the Dillion Johnson injury
A team like Washington or tcu will eventually win a natty. It’s mathematically impossible for it to never happen lmao
Sure it is. We already have the stats that say if you have a 35th or worse defense you will not win the NCAA title.
the big deal was penix played below par for him. like he over threw some of his dogs. penix played sub par. so washington lost.
