  • Ginny Buckley reviews the 1997 model Daihatsu Move, and checks out it's performance and handling, as well as seeing how practical and stylish it is. The Move has a measly 800cc engine which produces 42bhp, giving it a top speed of 82mph. Plus David Morgan - a representative from Daihatsu UK, tells us what they're hoping to achieve with this car and what sort of drivers will be looking to buy it and why.

850 cc Daihatsu Move ? The "Kei"class vehicles must be under 660 cc over here in Japan. You people are lucky to be able to buy them as 850 or 1000 cc cars. But the 660 come with turbo with DOHC and put out 64 hp at 6000 rpm and 10kg of torque at 3500 rpm. That is what they say on the book, but it actually produce almost 80 hp and it can easily tuned into 160 hp or even and 215 hp 660 cc monster. All it takes is re write the computer. The Storia「X4」(713cc 120ps)and the Move custom turbo share the same engine. As a matter of fact, many Toyota cars are made by Daihatsu company. They last a long time trouble free. Those Japanese cars are made to last on severe city use. If you take them to the all highway miles country side use, they last a million miles.

What an ugly car, what were they thinking?

It's a Japanese 'kei car', there's quite a number of similar looking vehicles in Japan. And there's worse looking ones than this, such as the Honda N-Box.

What were they thinking?? They were thinking of maximum space given the restrictions of the Kei class. They were thinking practically. They were thinking reliability. They were thinking of quality at a good price.
All of this Daihatsu achieved. Brilliant little cars.
