Sand has got to be the easiest way to occupy anything lol. You put a group of college students on the beach they’ll dig a hole. You put donkeys by a pile of sand they’ll dig through it. Birds will take dust baths in it. Bugs can tunnel through it. It’s the era of sand in blockbuster movies too.
I had a therapist in middle school who brought in a container of sand for me to play with while I talked, it was really soothing

Who knew that a big pile of sand would be so stimulating for the animals? lol Then again, as a 5 yr old I would've been hugely excited to play in it. 😄

OOOH I JUST REMEMBERED!!! My brother once (when kids) ran across my neighbors yard and into the one next to that and lifted their tortoise above his head!... It promptly pissed on him with a MIGHTY stream! Thanks Push-Pop for that memory!.. you are already pulling your weight as an ambassador! Tortoises are Great!
Damn, I knew I would see a T-Rex in an enclosure in my lifetime! Crazy big project, looking forward to see it in it's finished form.

I'll be excited to add mine once we get our place and we're moved. I plan on getting a pollinator garden started along with other plant purchases, like dogwood, eastern redbud, and magnolia trees! Boyfriend and I are really embracing being fur and plant parents.

You can get cell phones that are safe for kids now. Like the parents can monitor it, set up restrictions, etc. Pretty neat.

27:46 THEYRE GETTING SO SWEET AND SOCIABLE!!! Also the sandpit fit reminds me of when i was a kid. my mom would bring me to the barn where she rode horses. Me and my friend at the time would climb around the sawdust shavings that were meant for the horse's stalls lmao. We called it "KING OF THE SAWDUST PILE!!!"

I kinda think that it might actually be wolves for the new ambassadors. Especially with the view tower and not interacting with them freely. Regardless of what the animal is, it's interesting that they won't really interact with them like they do everyone else. How would they do animal care and veterinary care? Or is the whole not interacting with them only for collabs and not staff?
I’ve seen videos of behind the scenes care from other zoos. Loooots of training! In those situations they trained each individual to recall into their own separate pen. Then train each individual to present various body parts to a steel mesh barrier, or slide a foot through a gap in steel bars. While they are in their pen/indoor area they can clean the outside & vice versa. Sounds like a lot of work, so for the staff’s sake I’m hoping they’re not very complicated animals & are only 2-3 in number 😅
Target training is quite common for dangerous animals. It can be used to lure and also be the foundation for presenting body parts for examination :)

Basically all herbivores are opportunistic carnivores. Tortoises really shouldn't be allowed to eat meat often though as too much protein is one of the causes of pyramiding.
