    The v6 was a minute faster, but I'm still really impressed with the diesel. The gas one spent basically the whole run at 6000 rpm and got like half the gas mileage. I don't think the V6 is going to last very long running 6000 rpm. The diesel just hummed along at 2500 -3000 rpm. I really want one of these trucks.

      The 2.8 diesel really demands a tune. Very underpowered from the factory. Should be making power closer to the 3.0l found in BMW which is 260hp/420ftlb

      @@husky701rider9 Seems like there is a couple, including Duramax Tuner (www.dieselworldmag.com/diesel-technology/minimax-upgrades/). Guessing this engine could really be helped by the 20-30 extra horsepower these tunes provide. Though then the GM warranty would be at risk.

    TFLTruck, Thanks for another review.. I was anxious to see this one as I own an ECODIesel (Big Horn 4x4). Looks like it's a nice truck and you can't go wrong with a Duramax power plant, but IMO this vehicle is way over priced compared to what you can get a full-sized one for. I know I paid quite a bit less than for my RAM than what that truck costs. I did wanted to point out that you need to keep in mind when mention pricing on the ECODiesel option that the cost depends on what model you purchase. If buying some models (HFE) the ECODiesel is standard. In the Big Horn HEMI is standard, so cost only $3120, if you get a Outdoorsman, then $4270. Keep the reviews coming,ThanksJZ

    Those that are bashing the speed going up the hill, don't forget, the diesel Canyon is pulling about 700 more lbs up the hill than the gas Canyon and the diesel is not designed for speed, but for torque.
    One thing to remember, when you pay extra for a diesel up front, you also get more at trade than a gas when you resell. I look at it as an investment for mpg and towing that I get something back from. If you look at a diesel's up front cost only as fuel savings, it will take forever to get your money back compared to a gasser. But when you sell that diesel and get more than a gasser back, then look at your total cost of ownership, a diesel will usually win, even with higher costs for oil changes.

    Hey tfl, great video as always. Thank you guys and your crew for finally getting around to running this truck up the ike.
    I hope the aftermarket embraces this engine like they do the bigger diesel engines. Ive seen other videos oversea's with this truck with a tune on a dyno and its really not that bad. This engine once apon a time was here in the U.S.A in the Jeep liberty and it didn't last to long I belive due to sales. The price is a little high and I agree with the added gadgets in it to make it worth being a 43k truck. Great job to GM for having a set of you know what and bringing it here to the states. I seen nissan frontier videos with a 4TB Cummins style diesel in development and would love to see it become a reality. Its a great time to be a truck / muscle car guy!

    Now that I have put a bunch of miles on my 2018 Colorado I think I know why it slowed down on the Ike.....
    Long hill has caused high EGTs and the computer has reduced power.

Then go an use that 4.5 as an optimal option in the Canyon/Colorado twins! With the 8 speed and 3:42 gears. Wow something like 300 hp and 420 lbs. ft. Tq! That would be an amazing truck I would pay over 40k for willingly!

  • @passattdise
    @passattdise 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Needs a good 8 speed transmission, that locks in 7th and 8th gear for direct drive, no torque converter losses. Coming soon, in 2017 in the Denali version.

  • @SurelyYewJest
    @SurelyYewJest 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very cool. The diesel already appears to be paying off on MPG. I was surprised when you said the truck felt quick at the start of the uphill portion. This is an expensive package, but at the same time this is a lot of truck considering it's maxed out. It still may not tow as much as the gas half-tons, but it'll win on MPG every time.
    Sounds like this truck holds onto the diesel tradition of being the better overall haulers, with better road manners compared to their gas counterparts.

    • @OpenAirAdventure
      @OpenAirAdventure 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +danturbo316
      agree..unless your hauling very heavy loads a gas will do the job for your average 5th wheel or conventional. But it's definitely a preference. I paid $8000 more for my 6.7 powerstroke plus maintenance over five years is $4000. $12000 is a lot of gas.

    • @SurelyYewJest
      @SurelyYewJest 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      danturbo316
      Depends on the customer. Some will use it enough to make up the cost; others will buy it because it's a diesel. The diesel and its features can be optioned onto a 4x2 Colorado for an MSRP of about $35,200, and that even has a few options, so businesses can get into that truck for not much more than they spend already for a full-size. Also, if the diesel version has the capability to get between 8 and 14 MPG better than the gas V6 without a load attached, the mileage gap will close faster.
      The only thing that can be done right now is to see how the market responds to this offering.

    That's a great score. A little slow but it makes up for it everywhere else. I'm sure once the tuners get to it, they will bump the HP to +240 with probably 450+ ftlb. Biggest complaint is that it's too expensive to buy brand new. Best to wait 3-year with 40,000 miles.

    • @genisandreu3059
      @genisandreu3059 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Quang Nguyen what pushes you up a hill is hp not torque. horsepower = torque x rpm so thats why diesels, reving only until 4000rpm, have that much torque but not that much hp.
      The benefits of diesels are in normal situations where having lots of torque means you don't need that much rpm to produce the power needed.

    • @Boguardis
      @Boguardis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@genisandreu3059 Torque absolutely helps you up the hill. The more torque you have the less you have to rev your engine out for power.
      So saying "torque isn't what pushes you up hills" is just not accurate.

    I remember the first time I heard about the 2.8 litre "Baby Duramax" diesel engine. I remember thinking "at last. A small diesel engine that can fit in most smaller trucks." Why should people who need or want lots of horsepower and torque have to settle for a huge full-sized truck? Not everyone needs *that much* truck, not everyone needs a Chevy/GMC 2500 or 3500. For some people, a medium sized truck is *all they need.* So a small four cylinder diesel should be *all one needs* to have. I just hope this engine catches on. It may not be as popular as the big boys, but so what? You can't please *everyone.* But as long as people can afford to buy it, and that there are places all over North America to keep the engine running. I'd buy the GMC Canyon, just for the Baby Duramax diesel engine. :)

      I hear ya. Larger displacement (6.6 litre) Duramax diesel engines are fine for larger vehicles. Larger trucks, Class A and C Motorhomes, Fire Trucks, School Buses, etc.. But for smaller vehicles, like small/medium sized trucks, smaller motorhomes, most small and medium sized cars, then you want/need a small displacement diesel. It's unforgivable that for the longest time, diesel engines weren't available for drivers of smaller vehicles. I've heard some say that not enough people want small displacement diesel engines. I'm like *"really?!"* I'm sure there are plenty out there who do, car makers just don't want to listen to what we the car buyers say we want. That's bullshit.

    • @jasoncarpp7742
      @jasoncarpp7742 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I *so* agree. A 6.6 litre Duramax diesel would be fine for larger vehicles. But for small(er) vehicles, the 2.8 litre turbo diesel engine would be the perfect engine. Maybe not *everyone* would want to buy the 2.8 litre Duramax, but I'm sure there are those who *would* want and/or need one, and *should* be allowed the option. :)

    TFL, in your opinion is the price of the canyon diesel worth that price over the ram ecodiesel after testing both? For that price on the canyon I cannot believe it doesn't come with a keyless ignition, sunroof or wireless charging. I know a bunch of people don't care about any of those options. although the time was longer than expected, I believe that the diesel engine will last much longer doing this type of work then the gas 6 cylinders. The torque should limit wear and tear on the engine where as the gas relies a little more on it's horsepower. That's just my 2 cents! I love the idea of these diesels. I would love if more manufacturers used diesel. I said I would love if you could get a Volkswagen tiguan with the diesel!

    Great little truck. I just wish GM didn't go with a 3.42 rear end. I think with a 3.55 or 3.73 rear end and another 25-50 HP, this truck would fair much better, and I don't think it would change the fuel economy too drastically.
    Also as far as the scoring system is concerned, I know you lose points for failing to meet the standards. But do you gain points for exceeding the standard?

    • @TFLtruck

    • @PaLEOjd
      @PaLEOjd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you opinion on a lower gear option from GM would be great. It would be quicker off the line and would definitely get up and go quicker.
      The problem with that is fuel mileage! All the manufacturers are in an MPG war so they lean toward gearing for the best possible fuel economy and leaving just enough room for the truck to still seem impressive when looking at their numbers. GM could care less about what us, the customers want, they have to accommodate the Govt. regulators and get best possible MPG's. Lower gears would throw the fuel mileage rule out the window.

    • @unitedgray
      @unitedgray 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      PaLEOjd
      Absolutely. Dodge did the same thing with the Ram EcoDiesel. They went too safe in terms of fuel economy and what they produced was an absolute slug of a truck that can't haul anymore than a mid-size and runs 0-60 in 11 seconds.
      The reason I bought my EcoBoost was because it pulls harder than anything else in the class and it still gets 18-21 MPG for the driving I do. Mine also happens to be tuned and will run 0-60 in 6 seconds or less and easily tow over 10k.

      Well, diesel is not really about acceleration and high speed. I want capability, control, and holding power at speed: I doubt very much I would go past 65mph when towing 6k# in such a small truck. This gmc is highly attractive, but over priced.
      But you are correct imho; USA engineers do not choose the correct tranny nor diff to optimise a diesel drive train. The rear ratio should be as you say, and the tranny should be 8 gears. This would give a super low 1st gear for mud/snow, and a decent top gear for cruising: and the rpm band would likely be optimum at say 1000 rpm [eg 1500 to 2500] for all conditions. This would optimise mpg and could increase the capacities. The truck is pretty heavy already, and capable, so no need to increase frame etc for more weight: but a bump up in haul/tow to say 1500/8000# would be nice to have.

    • @unitedgray
      @unitedgray 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main issue holding them back is the use of 3.42 and 3.55 in the rear differential. I've even seen some GMC trucks with 3.23 and 3.08 gears which are absolutely gutless.

    what pushes you up a hill is hp not torque. horsepower = torque x rpm so why diesels, reving only until 4000rpm, have that much torque but not that much hp.
    The benefits of diesels are in normal situations where having lots of torque means you don't need that much rpm to produce the power needed.

    • @supremeirohnic
      @supremeirohnic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Genís Andreu Rabaña Indeed. After all, if you assumed a mythical drivetrain with zero friction loss, horsepower at the wheel would equal horsepower at the engine. Regardless if the engine is spinning fast and getting that torque multiplied a lot in the transmission, or a more torque-rich engine spinning slower and having it multiplied less, if the engine horsepower is the same in both cases then the equation demands the wheel torque be equal as well provided the same friction loss.
      The turbodiesel and turbo gas engines do particularly well in towing because of the torque curve; they tend to make much more torque at low engine speeds. When it gets slowed by a heavy load at higher engine speed, as the rpm go down, the torque goes up, and horsepower doesn't fall all that much. Or another way of looking at it: as the truck slows down, the rpm of the wheels go down, but the torque at the wheel goes UP, so it can match and overcome the increased load.
      A normally-aspirated gas engine with a flat torque curve and a linearly-rising horsepower curve can be quick when the rpm is held high and that torque is multiplied in the drivetrain. However, in any given gear, the gas engine makes about the same torque at the wheel at all rpm. That means that if the wheel torque isn't sufficient to maintain speed at a high rpm, then it's certainly not going to be as it slows down (it's essentially staying the same), and the truck will continue to slow until the load is reduced or a transmission downshift multiplies the engine torque more.

    • @genisandreu3059
      @genisandreu3059 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      irohnic stuff what I was trying to say is that if the vehicle could keep the rpm in the top hp figure all the time (maybe in a cvt) without frictions on the transmission, a 300hp gas and 300hp diesel would be equaly fast, no matters the difference in torque.

    • @supremeirohnic
      @supremeirohnic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the old 2015 6 speed in the Ford 2.7EB pulled 7,700Lbs in a heavier truck up the gauntlet in 7:38 at 4.3MPG. What if that motor took 8:57.7s to get up the hill pulling 6000-Lbs instead in a lighter pick-up. What would be the MPG then? Just shows you that once a Ranger comes out with an EB motor there will be no need for a diesel option. And you can get a full sized truck from Ford with the 2.7 for way cheaper than this truck with more payload and towing capability. What a joke this score system is. And the 2.7 with a heavier load, grade shifted down the hill just as well. The diesel will be an afterthought if Ford comes out with a Ranger 2.7EB.The 2.7EB also at a higher rate of speed held 3000-3500RPM up the entire hill because boosted gas motors have superior torque over NA motors and can match or beat the torque of a diesel. They also will not hunt for gears because the HP is superior to a diesel engine. And why was the 80 decibels not talked about. 80 decibels is very loud to have to listen to noise at those levels. They just showed it and said nothing.You had the 5.0 Ford Mashup with the Canyon. Why not pull 5600-Lbs up the hill in the 2016 2.7EB just to compare and keep the speed at 55mph to 60mph. You can do the heavier trailer in the 2016 3.5EB to relate to the 1/2 ton scenario. The 2.7 at 5600-Lbs would be the scenario should Ford come out with a Ranger and for those who can get more out a truck for cheaper than it is to buy a diesel Canyon.

      +The Fast Lane Truck Diesel is 1.125 times more expensive than gas. So really that averages to 6.7/1.125 = 5.95mpg = 0 point gain. This should also apply to the 6.2 GM motor using premium fuel or run all the trucks with premium fuel which in many cases premium will get a better mpg depending on the type of vehicle. My 2004 GM Sierra got better MPG with silver than regular but my 2012 Kia could care less. Regardless you cannot have the same point system for a diesel fuel vs gas without being unfair to the other competitiors and same goes for premium fuel use.

    • @poolchamp8
      @poolchamp8 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Thomas Paul Diesel is cheaper where I love. Also, premium fuel does not contain more energy and no, cars will not get better mileage from burning it over regular if the car is rated to use regular octane in the first place. The only difference with premium fuel is that it has a higher detonation temperature. That's it.

Seems like it pushes this into the full size truck price. When you factor in the mark downs that are done around March, it makes this more expensive than a full size optioned in a similar manner. So, it was good down hill and got good MPG. I see it as a dog on the pull up hill. This thing needs a tune out of the box! lol Very disappointing. The gas V6 pulls better and this Duramax Diesel is way way more $$$$$$. Still would love to see it with a good tune is all, it is under powered. Yes, I still love the truck and will end up with a Canyon .

    Is this the 4x4 or the 4x2? Not really specified & if it was would it matter? Not sure! (Edit, appears to be 4x4!) Why did MrTruck give a 19 - he didnt mention any negatives...

    I'd like to see you re-test the v6 at 51mph and see what the mpg is

    Probably pretty similar to my airstream sprinter 3.5 diesel. Faster than big rigs at least. Hard to find with an extended cab optioned-out. If they are trying to appeal to gen xers we are now empty-nesters that's for 30-somethings with kids to me. I need to haul stuff not child seats
