Now imagine it from Sonic's POV- slowly sinking, his vision becoming cloudy and dark, the last thing he sees is a giant air bubble just out of reach....
I've long said that this is a masterpiece of suspenseful, anxiety-inducing music, which few other compositions I've heard even come close to matching in terms of the visceral, emotional response that it evokes in the listener at the time it occurs in the game. This deconstruction completely captures why that is.
I like how all the channels represent an accelerating heartbeat. But channel 2... Channel two represents death approaching you, it's your subconscious telling you "I'm going to die". It's the hand of death slowly coming towards you until it finally grabs you and... silence.
0:27 It sounds like the music on the cell phone message from Sonic. Exe 1:091:22 It sounds like the chase music from the game Sonic.exe: The disaster from roblox
They've used basically all techniques (musically saying) to create this horrible feeling: 1- Gradual speeding up 2- Gradual getting louder (highlight for channel 2) 3- Non-linear patner through quick alternance among oitaves (it is classic) 4- Alterning between two tritones (the d*vil chord) C-F# and C#-G causes a constant desconfort of unsolution from C to C#. 5- The pan effect on channel 3 makes the sensation of danger that you don't know where and when comes from. 6- The music ends in C (base tonne) that puts a final point (it's over for you) followed by a sudden silence two seconds before the drowing.
Channel 2 is like you're watching a guy staring at you progressively walking towards you and you couldn't do anything but to watch him killing you in your dreams
I know everyone else is talking about Channel 2 but honestly it looks like some sort of long bar of like razor saws from Mario Maker 2 and they quickly approach. Then it disappears. Now you're in the Hidden Palace known as heaven. *WTF IS WRONG WITH ME?!*
I have trouble waking up in the morning... Maybe I should use this as my ring tone for my alarms from now on! If I make it to 2:24... Then i really must be dead!
man wtf. being able to really focus on the music brings my childhood nightmares back. im glad it's just 10 seconds. holy hell it's just so bad, i can't take it after the second half of channel 2 starts playing.
Imagine that a monster is stalking you everything else is the monster chasing but channel 2 is when you think you lost it but you didn't and the monster is slowly creeping up on you and when it ends that's when the monster get's you
I can usually handle scary stuff, but I'll admit, Channel 2 almost made me pee myself. Edit: out of curiosity, I slowed the video down to .25x. It didn't start out too bad, but the anxiety level builds as the music builds, and the very last note made me flinch.
I haven't seen it said, but did anyone else notice that channels 0 and 3 are the same "melody"", but displaced a tritone (the devil's interval)? cool little detail.
I wish I had known about this when I made a video about why this music is so scary. This original version is the best and channels 1 and 2 are a big reason why, coupled with the original loud & bright snare.
Channel 2 is the icing on the cake that is the suspense of this infamous drowning theme.
Play at 0.25x speed!!!!!
Channel 2 puts a big tension spike into our minds as well as being a massive adrenaline rush.
whenever I hear channel two during the drowning countdown, it's so scary
OK I am I am I made a mistake funny like it does like
Ok o
the way channel 2 slowly ups the volume really adds to the suspense
I didn’t know channel 2 made that terrifying sound!
Same that scared me
jesus christ, hearing that sound by itself instilled a very primal fear into me...
Am I the only one who hasn't felt fear?
@@aniscleidepalmeira5743 no
I thought it was a square wave lol
The most ironic thing is how the bass is the same as Labyrinth Zone.
They knew it.
And that organ instrument in Channel 0 is from Chemical Plant zone so... Yeah, there's that.
Wait which channel is base again.
@@PLAYER42_ready Channel 1 is Bass.
You mean DAC and channel 1?
Channel 2 is the feeling when you're being stalked by a serial killer, then realized it's too late.
(Drowning theme plays)
(Drowns)
(Big bubble finally rises)
OH COME ON!
You hate to see it
**RAGE QUIT INTENSIFIES**
That happend to me too xd
Sonic paradox be like:
Now imagine it from Sonic's POV- slowly sinking, his vision becoming cloudy and dark, the last thing he sees is a giant air bubble just out of reach....
Channel 2 even LOOKS scary, like it's some otherworldly horde stampeding towards you.

I know it's not possible but I wish we could break down the sonic colors version. That orchestra remix of the drowing theme is of nightmares.
No you cannot, Retro games only!
@@ilikeminecraft1232 r/whoosh
Didn't Sonic colors had a DS version?
Technically it can be done (asuming it sounds similar)
Orchestral covers are so underrated I swear
@@g_ato3337 you are right. I didn't think about it till now but that version uses the sonic rush drowning version I believe.
1:51 sonic: I NEED A FRICKING AIR BUBBLE

have anyone noticed how much is going on here? 1:37 when the main melody doesn't shout in your face, there's a whole perfect instrumental beat
2:06 only the strong hearted people can listen to this version faint of heart may leave
Oh no... you did NOT just extend this anxiety out to 2 and a half minutes!
OH HE DID!
To me they extended a banger of music to two and a half minutes
0:12 my heart Dropped hearing this-
All time favourite sound of me. It's genius. Whoever realized that idea of pure desperation so abstractly perfectly is a genius.
ANXIETY the sound... Broken into parts
0:15 my thoughts when i try and sleep
Literally
Bro, I wasn't even aware that Channel 2 had that increasing volume of suspense, that made it so much better.
The first time the drowning music is shown
1:52 EVERYBODY NOW
Now this puts in perspective just how friggin scary a drowning theme can be
I love how at 2:06 he goes full Sonic.EXE on us lol
Channel 0: 0:00 - 0:09
Channel 2: 0:11 - 0:26
I think channel 2 could be anything, even a jumpscare waiting to happen.
I never knew this tune was so complex.

Channel 2 is the icing on the cake that is the suspense of this infamous drowning countdown theme.
Ah yes the sound of true fear.
You wanted me to visualize my anxiety?
Well here you go listen everything between 0:00 to 2:24 and you'll understand.
0:54 this is fire
it's the exact opposite
Channel 2 is like you're watching a guy staring at you progressively walking towards you and you couldn't do anything but to watch him killing you in your dreams
2:06 OK THIS REALLY BELONGS IN Sonic.EXE or EYX or whatever you call it.
There’s something about the drowning theme from Sonic 1 specifically that makes it sound so much more sinister than any of the others
It's so cool how you hardly notice Channel 2 in the final mix but by the time you hear it, it's already too late
Channel 2 is the embodiment of fear itself, packed into 2 1/2 minutes of this video.
Great, my childhood nightmare broken down into 6 different nightmares 😢
Yo the drowning music scares the sh** out of me bro, sega knows how to scare us💀,and sonic killing himself in sonic cd after waiting too long💀💀💀
I know everyone else is talking about Channel 2 but honestly it looks like some sort of long bar of like razor saws from Mario Maker 2 and they quickly approach. Then it disappears. Now you're in the Hidden Palace known as heaven.

Channel 1 and DAC still a bop somehow
Jesus Christ, Channel 2.
Finally I've been waiting for something like this.
Bass & Percussion 0:54
Main Drowning Sound 0:00 - 0:12
Wow, channel 2 even looks terrifying!
the channel 2 is the reason why i love this more than the Sonic 3 one.
Channel 3 is really trippy. Gotta love Binaural Audio
Ah Channel 2 would you like to become my new morning alarm sound?
Imagine that a monster is stalking you everything else is the monster chasing but channel 2 is when you think you lost it but you didn't and the monster is slowly creeping up on you and when it ends that's when the monster get's you
Listening to these like this is oddly satisfying!
My anxiety built up more and more as I was watching this lol
Channel 1 + DAC: banger
Channel 2: run
channels, 0, and 3 kinda make a join together to make their clap. What I like was All of them together to make a WHONE ENTIRE BLACKHOLE CLAP MAN!!!
I can usually handle scary stuff, but I'll admit, Channel 2 almost made me pee myself.

fact: this plays in sonics head whenever amy is chasing him.
That Organ Based instrument in channel 2 isn't messing around.
Yes! Channel 2 is a surprise. I didn’t realize that was in there but huge impact
2:06 sonic.exe, icing on the cake!
I like how Channel 4 is the one that gives an echo effect for Channel 0
The drums are Sonic's foot tapping and why it gets faster is because of Sonic's panic
Favorite Part 0:54
channel 3 sounds like a phone call lol
slowed down drowning music is even more anxiety inducing
It would be terrifying if sonic was in the hospital and his heart monitor start making this noise but in beeps
Everyone says channel 2 is anxiety inducing but dang the right side is good on its own
Channel 1 and DAC Sound Like From EYX
I haven't seen it said, but did anyone else notice that channels 0 and 3 are the same "melody"", but displaced a tritone (the devil's interval)? cool little detail.
Drowning drowning sinking sinking-
Channel 3 is actual terror like in a sonic.exe game where you dont get caught but die anyway
1:37 My Favorite Part
How?
Why the heck did I comment this.
Channel 1's movement is so smooth for some reason
2:06 gives me Sonic.EXE vibes

Channel 2 is what I think people fear te most from this
Channel 3 did the Matrix on my ears
the drowning music is called "Drown Sonic Drown"
1:23 or 1:09 Could be in Sonic.Exe
Eyx
Thank you so much for all these videos you put up! Any chance you could do some Earthbound-deconstruction at some point?
Ah, yes... the most terrifying theme ever, broken into pieces.

I wish I had known about this when I made a video about why this music is so scary. This original version is the best and channels 1 and 2 are a big reason why, coupled with the original loud & bright snare.
niceeee. keep it up. also first
Bruh
sorry. hehehe
I don't know why you're going hehehe
Incredible 😍
When it was just channel 1 and DAC playing i was immediately reminded of the legendary theme from Pokemon black and white
The DAC and channel 1 is the best thing to hear it sounds like the sonic.eyx chase theme
What instrument is it?
Melody and lead: Channel 0, 3 and 4.
Percussion: Channel 1 and DAC
Suspense: Channel 2
Here's something I thought I'd never see! 10 seconds of terror turned into tesla coils!
Finally !!! :D
