    It is so refreshing to see vintage furniture being properly restored rather than "updated" with a coat of paint or worse chalk paint.

    • @xthatwhiteguyx
      @xthatwhiteguyx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      To be fair, though... I would have just painted or put some paper over the interior shelf lol. It didn't look to be quality wood or anything.
      Also, when an item is just a thin veneer that is already chipping (nearly 100% of TH-cam refurbishing videos are these), I don't see the harm in just using wood filler and paint.

      I agree, I think painting old furniture looks ghastly

      That’s why there are alternatives for people who like different things! Calm down!

      @@catofthecastle1681 What did I say that implied I was not calm? I did not use capitol letters to indicate my voice was raised nor did I use exclamation points at the end of my sentences to express a very strong feeling. I simply expressed my appreciation of the restoration of a piece of furniture to as close to it's original condition as possible.

      There’s nothing wrong with chalk paint. Yes, some furniture should be restored to its original beauty, but some pieces look better with chalk paint, or any other kind. I do appreciate your thoughtful opinion, however

    I've been absorbing many DIY refinishing videos these past 2 months. I have 3 favorites, and you have just joined them. You make the process and the rationale for each thing that you do so very clear. I'm getting geared up to work on some pieces over the summer. Your instruction will help greatly.

    Beautiful job. I love these Art Deco cocktail cabinets. How amazing this one still has its original light and lethal-looking cocktail sticks with which to commit an Agatha Christie murder. I appreciate your commitment to authenticity and retaining the original elements and not replacing them. Wish everybody had that attitude.

      @tom moncrieff you're right about those cocktail stickers, I've skewered myself on mine a couple of times then worried about Tetanus! I'll definitely do the sanding trick to remove all the rust. Great video! Xxx

    I have a dressing table that I wanted to fix up for 20 or more years, which I finally tackled a few months ago. Used exactly your method to remove the finish, blades and sanding. Difference is that I disassembled the piece as far as possible, it's just easier to get into the little nooks and crannies. I was under the impression that it was made in the 60s or 70s, great was my pleasure in finding 1941 date stamps on the back of the mirrors! A well worth while little project that turned out really nice. The badly rusted steel fittings were soaked in vinegar for 48 hours and scrubbed with a kitchen scourer, they have a nice "antique" patina to them now.

    You've certainly got the products. I took a wooden tv cabinet and made a bar cabinet out of it. Spray painted to give that mid century style, added racks and above interior lighting. Also added hairpin legs. I may say, I was impressed with myself! Love turning old furniture pieces!

    My first watch. All of a sudden I knew to delay my bedtime and it was worth it. Thank you for a detailed show of how you fixed things and took the care to make it live again. Not painted Willy nilly ,slapping on a coat of white in this case. Thank you. That woodgrain now is worth it to the owners

  • @lorrainemurray2488

    That was a very beautiful job. As far as the hardware, you can boil that in some hot water and vinegar, and then let it soak. Take a toothbrush and then rinse it off with warm soapy water, it should take all that rust off of the hinges and everything else . You could use oven cleaner, just lay the pieces out on newspaper, spray it and let it sit. It works good on metal .You use it when you clean your oven racks so, why not one rusty nails and rusty hinges .I think that will work for you, it's just a tip that I learned. But whichever method you use is easiest for you, then continue to do that .I enjoyed this video. I would like to see more ,have a blessed day.
