I had some hopes when I heard he wanted to participate again, but his song is a disappointment. Boring and lackluster. Too bad that NDR still has the say in who is going to ESC as they use to pick radio-friendly songs thus rejecting Electric Callboy 2 years ago. Man, that would have been a memorable gig.
I think this schlager thingy actually has some Germany identity. Give Marie a full-on delusional sultry Oktoberfest staging and see them getting some televote.
@@oehlbormturn i'd say it's 4/10 (better than 4 other songs), my view is that Germany should double down on their stereotypes (last year they should have done it with terrible but memorable Ikke Hüftgold), because televoters would love a ridiculous stereotype.
As a German I’m rooting for Ryk as well 😊 His song sounds the most authentic to me and I absolutely love his voice. He already proofed in the German pre selection in 2018 that he can sing live. I sadly can already see Max winning because of his popularity but as we have a 50/50 rating by the jury and the public I hope Ryk can win with getting 1st with the Jury and Top 3 of the televote.

i hope he goes a bit bigger than just a piano and adds something very unusual or memorable. the song is very unique so id love the staging to be unique too
Thinking about this had me way too invested 😅 I'm thinking dark stage in the beginning, because it starts so slow and mellow, and slowly streams of light are coming in when the music gets more intense, but still keeping it subdued. Like moonlight filtering through cracks at night, since he's singing about laying in bed sleepless. He definitely shouldn't just sit at a piano imo, it needs movement when the song starts getting more "desperate" and tense to underline the emotions. A whole narrative flow that ends with him breaking down or slowly sinking (into sleep, into the ocean he mentions, the river-). Kind of contemporary dance vibes (without all out dancing, I think that's where Gjons choreographer went wrong 😂). The line "You're my lonesome star" could translate beautifully into visuals. Also him being backlit versus his face being illuminated. I think lyrically the song is about his childhood self and how he wants to keep that child-like soul while fighting darkness and depression, making his younger self proud. Maybe I'm projecting. It's making me want to draw just as much as Répondez-moi did, in any case, which is one of my favourite Eurovision songs of all time ♥️
As some people have said, DO NOT PUT DANCERS ON THE STAGE! Let it be simple, just him, maybe a piano. Or maybe just him on a soft spotlight, with fitting elements on the LED, great camera work of closeups and showing the small lights from the audience! Which would work really real this year, with the audience being all around the stage!
Gallant are referencing NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle - New German Wave), an incredibly popular music genre from the early 80s (Nena (and maybe Trio's Da Da Da) being the most famous representative and representing the commercial end of the genre), where there was music in German that wasn't Schlager and had whimsical lyrics and experimented with technology
Ryk's song is the best chance to bring Germany out of the disasters of the last few years. I'm praying that they create a good stage design for this song so that it doesn't get lost in their live show. Otherwise, the only other acceptable alternative would be Bondine.

But the issue is, the german music market isn't exactly jury bait compatible - the stronger music we make (Electric Callboy, Grossstadtgeflüster etc) is more televote friendly. We just don't jive with much of the music the ESC juries prefer. So focusing on jury bait means the results are hit and miss and without much diversity. (Only exceptions are Katze & Naiv, which feel a little thrown in so they can pretend we had diversity tbh). The selection is fine overall but nothing too special IMO, with one real gem (Oh Boy), some songs that are fun but not for ESC (Katze, Love on a budget) and some songs that are just weak (Naiv, and Forever strong is a literal crime against music itself tbh). Tears like Rain and Always on the Run are fine for me too, but not as strong as Oh Boy. With a really good staging, I think Oh Boy could actually do pretty well. Like, not win the whole thing well, but maybe a top 5 with juries and top 10 overall. Ryk's voice is lovely and he's a great live singer, so I'm not worried about that... I just really hope they nail the staging. It needs to fit that mix of intimacy and epicness of the song IMO.
I want to get this out to the ESC bubble and especially to the German ESC bubble: get out there and promote the living daylights out of "Ryk / Oh Boy"! It's basically the ONLY song with a valid chance! And if we really want the obviously musically best and most unusual song to stand out from what promises to become a very Chacha-LOUD ESC this year, please, get out there and get Ryk some traction! Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaase!!!!!!!
Even the last song gives me vibes that it will be so hyped but at the end will finish in the bottom 5. Out of all songs I liked cat song but mostly because of the German and I agree that it probably won't have a chance.
I think RYK's voice is better than Gjon's Tears because it's more mature. Check out his National Final Performance in 2018 when he lost to Michael Schulte with "You and I" (it's on the Eurovision World website). I still listen to it to this day. I remember Conchita reviewing in 2018 and said he thought it could win the ESC.
Yea his vocals were excellent. I hope he has a little bit more movement and connection with camera this year though. Thanks for recent coffees as well 🙏🏻
same top 2! i feel like those are the obvious choices. For me personally, I like tears like rain just a little but more because it's completely my sound, but I'm keen for the live show to see if it changes my mind. haha.
Max Mutzke was a very beloved Eurovision entry back in 2004. He was produced by Stefan Raab, who is a bit of a Eurovision legend (he produced five top 10 placements for Germany as well as being Lena's producer). Most of these songs have strong "will get a couple jury votes but no televotes" energy. I think Ryk would probably get the best result, everyone loves a good emotional male ballad. I really don't trust the German public to vote for him though, wish they would just internally select him haha.
Ryk genuinely has winner potential, however I have been warned by locals that it’s unlikely to be chosen :( if that happens they have lost an absolute gem
Well, you have to take into account that the popular music sphere or radio sphere isn't very open to the unusual. Don't get me wrong, there's tons of very good music on the scene but it's within relatively narrow peer/fandoms. So with the German Final there's like a majority of people chiming into the vote that either belong to the timid middle-of-the-road camp or are even completely disinterested in ESC and its dynamics as a whole and just vote because they're given something to vote. So, as a German, I am UTTERLY nervous for Ryk´s Oh Boy because I could very much seen the Germans being, sorry, too thick for this truly absolute gem of a song and rather trot down the stupid lane for a wellknown name with a weak but unassuming song or have that damn Schlagercrowd going bonkers for Marie Reim an her idiotic circe 1999 rendition of sexkitten in a swingerclub full of socks-in-sandals...
Like all entries but nothing really standing out for me personally. Was hoping for a big German revival after the last couple of entries (I did like Malick) but Im not feeling it.
As a german, I’m a bit disappointed by this selection, although I never expect something from NDR. My favourite is Bodine Monet, but I’m rooting for Ryk to win because it’s probably the only song that can get a decent placing for us. I think Marie Reim has the highest chance to win our NF, because Schlager is very popular and has a huge fanbase in Germany, but I don’t hope so because it’s so terrible imo 🥲
oh god, i really hope not, Marie's song is guaranteed bottom 5, possibly last. I hope Ryk can bring some next level staging and just seize the final like that
I'm also german and I pray to god, my fingers are crossed that Marie will not win the NF. I also really hope that Max Mutzke will not win, he has an amazing voice but the song is so lame.
@@Ben-Immnlc'mon, everyone and their dog is doing the 80s/90s throwbacks these days, Marie won't be out of place. It's not quite UMK's Cicciolina which you all stanned, but it's still in the same ballpark (albeit the verses are weak), with a really all-out-camp staging it can escape the last place. Still bottom 5 though.
I am a bit divided this time, in the sense that I like some songs ("Tears Like Rain", "Oh Boy", "Always on the Run", "Undream You" and even "Naiv"), yet I am also not a fan of other songs (especially "Forever Strong"). my personal fave is Bodine "Tears Like Rain"; I just love the melody, her voice and the overall vibe of the whole song. but, I think Ryk "Oh Boy" is the most likely song to win the selection, as it is the most favoured by fans.
I think Oh Boy and Tears Like Rain are the favourites overall, but am wondering if the fact that she isn't German will influence the vote. Like it potentially did with Mileo. I think it depends a bit on wether she speaks German or English in her media appearances, but hope it doesn't matter too much. She's also my favourite tied with Oh Boy, but her song is catchier too me :)
I don’t think Ryk will win, because I think it’s just not the type of song that german people vote for at midnight (when the voting is open). But it’s just my expectation, I could be wrong ofc (hopefully).
@@emdove I think, given the similarity between Dutch and German, and the fact that some Dutch also worked in German industry, it would not be a big issue. I remember that Dutch presenter Chantal Janzen sometimes works in Germany in some shows.
I'm SO disappointed Germany isn't sending "Ich kündige" which is such a banger and would have received all my neighbourly Austrian televotes - none of these songs really excite me unfortunately 😢
I like Ryk, but his song sounds soooo similar to what James Blake did 10 years ago that it distracts me. If you listen to 'Retrograde' by James Blake it's hard to ignore the similarities in sound and song writing.
I think it’s all lacking in the wow factor . It’s a shame because Germany has so many amazing artists . Nearly every band I listen to comes from Germany . I really do hope Germany does better this year .
Don't download Naiv, it gets stuck in your head. I do wish this song had more exciting production, but it is still a fun listen in a playlist. I do worry how close to the bottom it would finish in Malmo, so I am ok with any of the other top 4 going forward.
OMG OMG I got my first winner alert... IS it only me? I can so see Ryk winning in Malmo!!! That was amazing. I cannot wait to hear him live. I hope he can deliver the studio version with so much emotion and voice control. I love alternative, folk vibes, but I think Bodine has a much better song that she is given credit for. Beatiful tone of voice, well sung and a beautiful and catchy melody. I could see it doing really well in Malmo too.

I think unfortunately the German NF is weaker than last year. But not everything is bad. My list would be: 1. Leona -> I really love her song and the intimate and sad feeling in it. But you´re right: This could work on Eurovision, but there a lot of ifs. 2. Bodine Monet -> Good song, fits well with Eurovision, but needs probably a little more impact. 3. Galant -> Nice concept, in my opinion a good base to make something special out of it. 4. Ryk -> Not my kind of song. I couldn't connect to Répondez-moi either. But it could work (especially with the juries). 5. Issak -> Great voice, but a bland, predictibale song. 6. NintiyNine -> Radio pop song, without any impact 7. Max Mutzke -> Good voice, boring and outdated song 8. Marie Reim -> It´s Schlager, your idea about the ninties with this is understandable, Schlager hasn´t developed any further since then. The only selling point of this is the German language. I wish there would be more roughness, more variation, more darkness, just more "grip" in the selection. A metal song, a dance song, something special and unique - there´s a lot of room for improvement. I´m still waiting for a German national final that really blows me away . Last year were two steps in the right direction, this year is unfortunately one step in the wrong direction again. Anyway: Thanks for you great analysis, as always.
Muahah loved how you commented on how the German Eurovision songs were so pg they sounded like sponsored by the Catholic Church. Half of Germany is actually Protestant. They are indeed a bit more Pg oriented o think ( no offense meant I am an atheist what do I know )
I was a bit disappointed when I first heard Germany's selections and immediately thought they were going to bottom again. While some were nice for everyday listening, I didn't find any of them really competitive on the esc stage. They didn't stand out much and were more or less generic musically and thematically, other than Katze which while experiemntal was way too monotonous. Now that I let them marinate, I understand why people want Ryk's Oh Boy. But while it might be slightly more interesting while remaining accessible, I just don't see it working out/translating live on the ecs stage when in the mix with others even eith a strong performance. Heck in a playlist with vidbur, mgp, and Lithuanian potentials, I unfortunately already found it forgettable. But I will say for the other German potentials at least Isaak has a powerful voice and is great live performer from what I've seen so far, and for a generic song, it still has a catchy chorus/refrain. Or if Leona is able to deliver an emotional and vulnerable performance, even if the song is not groundbreaking, either of their performances might yeild a surprising result. But I agree it would depend heavily on placement and the overall mix of songs. Still there is potential, and that's better than absolutely nothing, even though there are many questions left in the air. (But putting aside the doom and gloom, someone told me Germany were going to change broadcasters going forward so I am excited for whatever is to come for them!🥳)
Change of broadcaster from NDR to MDR will do nothing good. ESC doesn't have so much impact in Germany like in Scandinavia or Australia (just examples). You can see it best at the NF: broadcastet at 22:05 Uhr (10:05 PM), the stage is really small (can not compared with the ESC-Stage) and few money for staging, lightning etc. This will not change if MDR really take over. Best would be if Stefan Raab is involved back again. That were the best years in ESC for Germany including winning in 2010 with Lena
Ein Appell an alle die voten können:Bitte wählt Ryk! Er hat das Potential das ganze Ding zu holen....Bondine ist gut, jedoch hat sie den schwächeren Song, wenn es um den Sieg geht
Is it just me or do almost all songs sound like they have been recorded in a church or giant hall? There is some sort of celestial sound effect in most of them, which I genuinely like, if it's used well. But it felt a bit too much or repetitive hearing it in at least 5 out of 8 songs. Overall, I think some of the songs in English would sound better, if sung in German, tbh.
Please send Ryk! An amazing song, dark, haunting, authentic...his vocals crazy, everything we need right now in a music world, especially in Eurovision. Best regards from Cro. 💗
I feel like for the German national final, NDR chose the six most radio-friendly songs out of their submissions, as well as two average songs in German to give the illusion of musical diversity. I thought "Oh Boy" was the most Eurovision-friendly song here, so I was totally baffled when "Always on the Run" won the national selection instead. I could practically hear Terry Wogan saying, "Were they watching the same show I was?! You just never know with the juries." To me, this national selection proved that the staff at NDR aren't passionate about Eurovision like so many other broadcasters, but they see it as a chore to get out of the way each year. As a half German fan living in the US, I just feel really left out this year because so many others are sending exciting competitive entries and my country just is sending beige radio pop.
Unless the wildcard reality show song is absolutely mindblowing, Oh Boy is a top 10 final-taker. I get goosebumps every time I hear it, it’s WONDERFUL. I’m getting a similar feeling to when I first heard Amar Pelos Dois, it’s a moment. Germany would be completely bonkers not to choose this. I want this in the final SO much
Yeah this is a pretty easy one: Ryk is the one that stands out the most and gives us something that sounds special, authentic and interesting. The rest... doesn't. Bodine is OK I guess, Leona has some quality but tbh Elsie Bay has a better song in the Luxembourg NF. Overall most songs just feel very generic, unexciting and amateurish. So strange that Max Mutzke had a great song back in 2004, and now he has this totally forgettable one. Marie Reim has about the cheapest piece of Schlager that I've ever heard. Ryk definitely has the most potential here to do well for Germany.
Dreadful! Germany, it's not too late to cancel this national final and just send Grossstadtgeflüster with ICH KÜNDIGE!!! 😅😅😅 Out of these choices, Oh Boy by Ryk is pretty but I feel like it approaches the wow factor line but doesn't cross it.
No, a very boring selection, nothing could get them out of the Bottom 5, especially after Lord Of The Lost finished last with a clearly better song. At least, the cwt song is somewhat funny, but ich kündige would have been much funnier anr had a better beat as well. And not everyone speaks German well enough to understand its humor and not everyone is looking up the lyrics (+as it's mostly the case with funny lyrics, something might get lost in translation).

True we will probably choose Max 😭 But I’m definitely going to vote for Ryk!
Ryk genuinely has winner potential, however I have been warned by locals that it’s unlikely to be chosen :( if that happens they have lost an absolute gem
He participated already in 2018, the year with michael schulte and came 3rd, so I don't think it's completely impossible 🤞🏻
And he came 3rd because of the public otherwise he would be second@@lisahillmann3268
I hope Ryk can bring some next level staging and just seize the final like that
@@ESCTom yeah it would be the most embarrassing last place ever 😭
I hope not either. Other than being basic musically, the lyrics are terrible too in my opinion.
@@Ben-Immnl but looking at the victory of "Blood and Glitter" last year, the idea of fan fave winning the German selection still makes sense.
@@a.m.rifkia.3rd493 that win probably also happened because people voted against Ikke instead of for the contestant they liked best.
Ryk is also a stunning live singer
yea his 2018 performance is excellent. i hope there is more movement from him in this one though
It's Ryk or bust for Germany....if he sings it flawlessly and it's well staged, it's definitely left hand side of scoreboard potential.
I like Ryk, but his song sounds soooo similar to what James Blake did 10 years ago that it distracts me. If you listen to 'Retrograde' by James Blake it's hard to ignore the similarities in sound and song writing.
Ryk ❤
Bodine Monet has the catchiest song. Full stop. With a decent staging may bring surprises
I think it’s all lacking in the wow factor . It’s a shame because Germany has so many amazing artists . Nearly every band I listen to comes from Germany . I really do hope Germany does better this year .
Hahaha, you disliked Max Mutzke so much you put him below the entry that hasn't even been released yet 😂
☠️ 😭
Don't download Naiv, it gets stuck in your head. I do wish this song had more exciting production, but it is still a fun listen in a playlist. I do worry how close to the bottom it would finish in Malmo, so I am ok with any of the other top 4 going forward.
What can I say...I love schlager😂 Marie Reim all the way for me - definitely just mt fav and not what would do best for Germany, but still🥳
16:25 that’s so funny because her mother represented Germany at Eurovision in 2001 😂
Ryk is Germany's ticket to shine in Eurovision this year
Yaaassss!
Oops, we did it again. Voted for a place at the bottom. Leider doof.
Unfortunately we are coming to claim our last place once again
yayy
also Tom, maybe u know this, but why has this national had 3 different names in 3 years? 😭
I’ve no idea. It thought unser lied für X Was a good name 🤷🏻♂️
Good question. I'm from germany but I can not give you an answer. Maybe it's like " oh last place again, let's chance the name auf the NF" 🤣
Jestem w szoku ile mają świetnych propozycji😮. Zresztą ostatnie lata też mieli fajne hity, niestety osiągali niesprawiedliwie złe miejsca. Takie jest moje zdanie!
Will u react to the DMGP songs that come out tomorrow (the 25th) ? :O
my priority will be PZE, but ill try to get to DMGP as soon as i can
@@ESCTom DMGP summed up by the danish OGAE people, have said the level has been raised by abit since the last 4-5 years so, its def something u should check out!
TOM I TAKE IT BACK DONT REACT TO DMGP WE'RE FUCKING DOOMED@@ESCTom
My winner is Bodine Monet ❤
Personally none of these songs did anything to me and am completely doubtful they'll enter top 15, but hey if others enjoy them happy for yah
We need to send Ryk 🤞
Ryk's song is great... especially if he can do it live.
hes very good live, he was in the NF in 2018 and his singing is very strong
Tom,how do you think the Ebu will fix the situation above israel ,will iceland and finland withdraw?
I’ve no idea. These conversations are all going on behind closed doors
I think unfortunately the German NF is weaker than last year. But not everything is bad.
My list would be:
6. NintiyNine -> Radio pop song, without any impact
7. Max Mutzke -> Good voice, boring and outdated song
@@voicy5958Hasn't there been rumors about Stefan getting involved again? But alas they are only rumors.
@@HZ-fg9sf Only rumors but I really hope for them to come true 😊
Ein Appell an alle die voten können:Bitte wählt Ryk! Er hat das Potential das ganze Ding zu holen....Bondine ist gut, jedoch hat sie den schwächeren Song, wenn es um den Sieg geht
Is it just me or do almost all songs sound like they have been recorded in a church or giant hall? There is some sort of celestial sound effect in most of them, which I genuinely like, if it's used well. But it felt a bit too much or repetitive hearing it in at least 5 out of 8 songs. Overall, I think some of the songs in English would sound better, if sung in German, tbh.
haha no thats me. in order to comply with copyright, i need to alter the sound
@@ESCTom 😂🤣😂
Don’t think this was the performance from the MGP final? I feel the vocals were much better there?
I love that you put Max Mutzke on 9 befre you even know the 9th song, becaus Max is so boring :DDDD
Bodine is the only right option🇮🇹🤝🇩🇪
In Germany we call Marie Reims‘s song „Schlager“ and the younger generations hates it
Ryk for Germany!
You just never know with the juries."
To me, this national selection proved that the staff at NDR aren't passionate about Eurovision like so many other broadcasters, but they see it as a chore to get out of the way each year.
Apparently there’s a very real danger that Marie wins, which is a guarantee bottom 3 and possibly last in my opinion
Oh dear... totally agree
Dreadful! Germany, it's not too late to cancel this national final and just send Grossstadtgeflüster with ICH KÜNDIGE!!! 😅😅😅
Out of these choices, Oh Boy by Ryk is pretty but I feel like it approaches the wow factor line but doesn't cross it.
Ryk #
Ryk! Oh please Germany, you must send Ryk! So beautiful!! ❤
We need Schlager. 🎉 So, let‘s go Marie Reim 😍
OMG 💀 when you said their national final is sponsored by the Catholic Church 😂😂
Ryk must win. Everybody else would be another last place for Germany.
Issak's song is too generic and repetitive, this is not a good choice for Germany
agreed
No, a very boring selection, nothing could get them out of the Bottom 5, especially after Lord Of The Lost finished last with a clearly better song. At least, the cwt song is somewhat funny, but ich kündige would have been much funnier anr had a better beat as well. And not everyone speaks German well enough to understand its humor and not everyone is looking up the lyrics (+as it's mostly the case with funny lyrics, something might get lost in translation).
You can't listen this songs, you speak all the time!
thats how copyright works, you cant play the song without commentary
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Deutschland, Du hattest die Chance, in die Top 5 zu kommen, aber dann hast du dich für diesen Song entschieden?? schade RYK

Bodine or ryk
Honestly this years selection is so bad so that I hope that we get zero points again just to get something different next year again. Doesn't mean I hate all songs but overall it is just boring soup.
welll its changing broadcaster next year
Mein Favorit ist Isaak
