What I think is different about Lachispa and Blanca Paloma is that Eaea grabbed almost no one at first listen (to many of us it just sounded weird) while Hartita de Llorar surely woke some people up during that binge listen. I think that's a positive thing thinking about how a song could stand out in Eurovision, without the need of fancy staging around it.
Lachispa is my favourite. The song makes SO MUCH MORE sense with the changing beats if you look up the lyrics. If Hartita de Llorar does the staging right, either like Doomsday Blue or like Grito or a bit of both, i think this has much potential
i LOVE anxiety flamenco! Maybe my favorite out of all NFs so far! About ESC success, i honestly don't know but i haven't given up hope yet. Did people expect Konstrakta to be popular with the televote? I'd be disappointed if we stopped sending songs deemed "too risky" for Eurovision
The thing about Lachispa's song is that for the 1st listen its quite jarring , like how i felt about marina satti's song zari, but after listening to it for the 2nd and 3rd time its obvious (at least for me) that its the best song from Benidorm Fest. By the way i saw somewhere that the person who is going to stage her song is the same one that was behind Bambie's song, so thats really great. Best of luck to her
Abraham Mateo, a very popular Spanish mainstream singer (was a guest at JESC and Benidorm last year) said recently that he thought of applying for Benidorm and participating in Eurovision, but after witnessing last year in person (also his brother participated and NQed) how the show goes he said he'll never apply cause the visions are different. I think this is how all his friends and famous artists think. I guess the whole system of set points is unattractive to famous artists, the low voting numbers especially, tbh I understand it totally cause it really seemed last year that the whole show was decided by a small community (that's mostly in the audience)... And I remember Eva Mora saying she wanted for Benidorm to become Sanremo, the main musical event in the country...
Venezuelan in Portugal here. I just believe that non-Spanish speakers are not used to our music taste and genres, so for them it is just similar. That's why I believe some eurofans from Spain just decided to don't care at all of results in Eurovision. They maybe feel unfair that they cannot do well with music they enjoy normally. I think it is similar to what happens with Portugal in ESC. I personally enjoy a lot of entries and also I am glad to listen a lot of Latin American music inspiration in some of them. Most of them are already in my playlist and I am really excited looking forward of what they would bring on stage next month! I really like Tom's analysis, and looking at his perspective I understand why he thinks this Benidorm Fest is the weakest. Of course, I don't share that same opinion but at the end my roots and language maybe turned me baised. La Chispa is interesting but Flamenco is not my cup of tea and I also think it is risky for Eurovision. Nonetheless, if Spaniards feel represented with it and particularly proud, they should send it. My favorite is Carla Frigo as I didn't know that an Electro-Bachata can be so good!
J. KBello and Melody feel like complete packages, though they don't bring anything groundbreaking. On the other hand, *La Chispa* and *Deteresa* could resonate well in Spain with their mix of folk elements, but their success will heavily depend on the staging, which remains uncertain.
To me the difference between Aeae and Lachispa's Hartita de llorar is that while they use similar vocal techniques, one was more traditional and maybe too niche & jarring with the dissonance also being part of main melody, whereas the other is more contemporary, no dissonance in the melody, and has more modern elements and a cool urban beat that kicks in that the general audience can easily enjoy. Plus I personally just love the drama of the song and how it hits you and isn't that usually a plus when it comes to ESC? Being memorable that is. While I also think Besame and VIP are decent pop choices for ESC, I think Hartita de llorar is more impactful and can potentially really stand out. Can't wait to see how it translates live. I am also a fan of some dark horse ballads because they are beautiful but they are too much of a long shot for esc imo.
A thing I wanna mention with Lachispa. Maybe people will not give this skyhigh points, but if they will nail the staging and making this more accessible, it can work. Also if juries will be really on board with it, she can be even top 10. Like with Alika. Low points from the public, but juries lifted it to a very high placement. On the other hand, not a lot of songs Spain can work with. This is at least polarizing. With Zorra it was nice, but it was neither tele or jury magnet. If they will send a bop, it has more chance to place poorly, if the performance is just ok.
Last year’s selection of Zorra sent a clear signal to serious artists. Some have already made public statements expressing their disconnect with the audience regarding what to submit to the ESC festival. I hope the new voting system solves that.
I agree with you, they are doing somethings to the festival im not into it... like principal inside people saying yhat they are not thinking about Eurovision.... this is our PRE national selection, what are they talking about kabakaj i hated that. About the community it is very intense. I think judges last years were pressured... like there were singers very low on the table that didn't deserved it and for me Nebulossa shouldn't have won. Still I supported them and I enjoyed the travel with our mother Mary and Mark haha this year the only song that impacted me was Hartita de llorar but it is true im from the south of Spain and it is closer to me so people don't have to like it. And here comes the dilemma. If she enough for Eurovision, i dont know yet, we have to wait for staging and vocals on the festival. Like for all the songs but at first Im supporting her for the song. We will judge the rest when it comes :
Yeah, I think there’s a few people in the Spanish ESC community who kind of feel like they “own” the national final, when in reality it should be the contest for everybody in Spain 🤷🏻♂️
@@ESCTom yes there are. And I think you know Spanish (?? You must have seen how the community fights a lot haha this is one of the reasons why artists reject the festival a bit
Benidorm fest has been one of my fav national finals recent years. Not this year unf, but i have hopes when we get to see them live. I struggle to like Lachispa. Carla, Kingdom or JK Bello for me
Im from Spain. I Love Carla Frigo, J Kbello, and La Chispa. Blanca Paloma was more flamenco tradicional pure and LaChispa Is more flamenco urban. If Portugal can send fado and do well, Ukraine can send his traditional sounds like GoA, why not Spain can send this and do well? 😊
Hi Tom , is it possible you could explain what ha-pend with William and Deban in 2019? This isnt the first time I’ve heard of something happening then and I was curious
Basically they were part of the international jury for that national final and they didn't vote for the fan favorite. If I remember correctly, they also had more power than the televote (that wasn't their fault tho) And if I remember correctly, they kinda alluded a preference for the fan favorite in their videos, and they on the live shows they voted for another song. And the audience blamed them for their favorite not winning
Hartita de Llorar is the risk. Does Spain want to take a risk again? Idk. But that’s the only one with anything special going on. Everything else is just variations of pop from 4/10-7/10. If they wanna go standard pop I’d go with VIP. But I hope they go for HdL personally (depending on live performances).
Not hugely impressed. I am in the minority liking Kingdom, but I liked Nochentera, too. It is the boppest of the lot. Thank you for these analysis videos. Really appreciated. Allows one to listen in peace on one's own and then compare without need to listen the dull songs again. Top of the pops!
This is easily the weakest national final of the year. It really does seem like the Benidorm Fest organisers are simply only trying to cater towards the Spanish eurofan audience that is clearly only one demographic of person that tend to only like girly bops, and they've just thrown a few sad bois (that I personally quite like) into the mix so they can just fill the male singer quota and get shoved to the bottom of the scoreboard by fans. I feel like sending someone like Lachispa so closely after Blanca Paloma would be a mistake. I don't feel like her song would connect and Spain would once again do poorly. To be honest I don't think any of these songs will get above 18th in Basel live performance permitting of course. So I'm just gonna root for the underdogs and hope Spain finally select a male vocalist and do something a bit different.
Sorry Tom but I don’t agree at all! there are MANY different music genres this year: Carla Frigo is bringing electro-bachata, Celine Van Heel salsa, J KBello urban, Melody europop, DeTeresa copla, Chica Sobresalto indie, Henry Semler a ballad, Daniela Blasco hiphop, Kingdom pop, La Chispa flamenco-saeta…

Agree with your general assessment, Tom. That said, J KBello is one of two national final songs I've downloaded (along with Ma Ei Tea Sind).
