id probably bump that up to my number 2, its kinda catchy. its a shame it went 1st in this random running order, i put it there cos i thought it was going to be a girl power bop
Sad that the staging for "Drowning in the Rain" was so mediocre. You have this dramatic Elsie Bay song, and you just give it the generic gold and white 2007 ballad staging? The hell? Did Luxembourg not have access to Elsie Bay's previous stagings, both for herself and others? I realize she probably didnt have much creative control, but even the lyric video had better understanding of "the vibe" with its dramatic red, white and black. So disappointing.
Yeah, literally nothing happened, other than her grabbing the mic at one point. Very disappointing but that’s what’s been going on creatively so far in this national final. My guess is that the producers were very limiting and what was allowed because nobody had any props or storytelling at all in any of the stagings
I dont feel any of these songs. They are mainly written by Scandinavian writers in English lyrically poor, i have a feeling whatever song goes to Eurovision will fall at the first hurdle considering the quality of other countries entrants of past and current year. Im not sure the delegations been keeping up with the contest.
Oh boy. Someone was Mr Grumpy here 😂 Yes, i agree. This mightn't be a great National Final but I'm prepared to cut Luxembourg a little slack. 1st year back in decades. Might take a while to get up to speed. They have that excuse. Other countries can't use that excuse ( looking at you Denmark ) As for a winner?. It has to be Krick. Elsie Bey's dna is all over this and i love it. Meaningful lyrics and a bondesque melody does it for me everytime! Quickly downloaded and think this would be an obvious qualifier in Malmö. Dare i say Top 10 potential? You heard it first here Tom Have a lie down and a VERY large camomile tea. Will work wonders for your stress levels! 😊😊😊
I too am quite underwhelmed by the songs on offer here - it feels far removed from the epic return I thought we'd get. Perhaps Luxembourg have been a bit too ambitious in organising an eight-song national final? Given how much the contest has changed since they last participated, I do wonder if they're trying to run before they can walk. The important thing is that they persevere with it even if they do poorly; it could take them time to find their feet in the modern contest, just as many long-standing participating countries have struggled in recent years. But anyway, back to the songs...I fully agree that Drowning in the Rain is the best by a country mile. Let's hope the Luxembourgish public realise that!
I need some help, what does Tom says before every song? Is it something french? I'm not a native speaker, and while I understand him pretty well, I just don't get what he says there. Subtitles don't help either 😅 I feel so dumb every single time!
I almost fell off my chair laughing when you called it "the worst NF, and I know the Malta NF exists". Well, it's not the worst; you haven't listened to Denmark yet.
Though I prefer "Fighter" and "Paumee sur terre", this final is nothing to get excited about. Many sound like Melfest rejects. Luxembourg, you can do better!
You always say that one sentence before watching a video. 😂 May I ask what it means? Is it in Irish? I have always heard it as "Wanna know my secret bank" btw 😂
I was super excited to watch Luxembourg's national final when I heard they were having one, but that excitement died when the songs were released. :/ I really don't care enough about these songs to sit through the live show. I'll just hope they select Drowning in the Rain on Saturday because that's the only decent option here.
The problem with a song sounding Swedish is not that Swedish songs are bad but that Sweden masters music enough to select the best from the rest. Honestly I feared this would happen when Luxembourg announced a NF. What is the point if you're just going to be a dumping ground for Melfest rejects? These entries are all competent and enjoyable but instantly forgettable. Luckily, I am really enjoying "Drowning in the Rain" which I have had on repeat, so there is hope for Luxembourg, though Krik's promotional picture leaves me worried : I am not sure she's that type of girl. Can she embody that song? I'm not sold yet, but we'll see...
there seems to be a total lack of awareness here as well. If I was the head of delegation, and these were the songs that I ended up with, I would make sure that everyone had to film a music video so that the visual concepts could distract from how empty the lyrics are
Why are the lyrics so bad - isn't English a very important language in Luxembourg? Did they not notice how benign and empty the words are, or did they not care at all? 😭 I wonder whether LUX will be gone again soon, cause I don't see them qualifying this year, except maybe for nostalgias sake.
I think Krick could qualify if they do some really great staging. But this NF doesn’t inspire me that the delegation have any strong or interesting ideas
I don't know if this was a situation like used to happen with Operacion Triunfo in Spain where you had artists get through and then songs attached to them. Here we've ended up with some talented artists but a few Melfest/MGP rejects. When I first heard them, I was interested in a few, but then I heard all and then when I listened again it wasn't as interesting. I like Drowning in the Rain but it's a bit meh. It just sounds like an Elsie Bay song - and I know some people don't like that critique, but tough - and when it's being sung by someone else who hasn't had any input into lyrics or music it feels inauthentic. I'm rather bored of seeing the same songwriters churning out the same things over and over again with minor variations and being lauded as genius because of it. Give us things that represent the country, not a cynical attempt to appeal to as many as possible. Look at Vidbir or UMK, for example, and there's far less music by committee.
Yea although really the blame is on the countries that pick the rejects up. These songwriters send out their scraps, and it’s 100% on other countries if they decide to feast on them. You can see that some countries clearly reject them now. For example Denmark doesn’t have any Swedish songs this year, I think that’s a conscious decision. Pairing artists artificially with songwriters, does it really work that often? You’re not only asking the person ;to sing a song now, they also need to fake their attachment to it cos they have no input into it Why not dump the lyrics and get the paired artist to write a personal message about the song. That solves the meaningless lyric part AND make the song more personal to the artist
@@ESCTom oh absolutely, I'm not blaming songwriters at all. If I were in their position I'd be doing the same. It can just get a bit dull for us watching.
Krick for me and as always enjoy your beautiful intelligent analysis. Krick has such an emotional content and I think the right staging will be similar to rise like a phoenix vibes. But Iceland have gone from 18th to 1st in the betting with a wonderful song (cough) my mistake political statement. 😳
I'm gonna go on a limb and guess the artists with the subjectively weaker songs might be mostly doing this to get more exposure as an artist. I'll cut Luxembourg some slack since the contest has changed a lot since 1993 and I can see why they're playing it safe. Obviously if they continue national finals and they're as bland as Germany, Malta, Ireland, Denmark, etc then we might have some issues. Maybe the stagings will make the blander songs better than the studio too. On the brightside I think Tali or Krick will probably win and those are the strongest songs (I like Naomi's song but I'd be shocked if it won) Tho Chaild is the one I'm most disappointed about. His other music is WAY better than this song. Hopefully if he tries again he keeps his distance from the Melfest rejects.
I think it shows how much chaild loves Eurovision that he’s still there, it must have been a total kick in the teeth for him to drop his song for something so bland. I was most hyped for his song, so really disappointed in the result
Wait for Luxembourg to mess it up and picked Chaild or Edsun because they are the most famous ones of the line-up instead of the only song that has maybe a shot at qualifying with Krick. And even then I doubt Krick's song would even go through. I thought this was the worst NF but Denmark decided to take the cake today.
There are a few songs here I don't mind listening to and I totally agree with your top 2: Krick does stand out as the most intriguing one; I hope she'll be good live and then I would definitely support her. I also like Joel Marques because of his amazing voice; the song suffers because the chorus is less interesting than the verses but I still enjoy it, despite the weird lyrics. Yes, it's a very safe, middle-of-the-road national final. Even Denmark has more variety this year. But I guess people may have been expecting a bit too much from a tiny country which has been away for over thirty years. I actually don't know how vibrant their music scene is, but the singers are all from Luxembourg and something homegrown would probably have felt more authentic to them than all this Scandi stuff. For instance I know that Chaild is a really interesting artist, and it's annoying that he's got this generic G:son song here.
Chaild entered the contest with "Night Call," but I guess the broadcaster didn't like it? It's a good track, so it's quite unfortunate why it didn't make it. Also Maz, who was featured on the track, suddenly was out when he was in. It's so weird. Chaild is the only big artist there and they gave him that noise...
@@im.joeyb. That song isn't perfect but would have so much more authentic and true to him! Damn Luxembourg... it even has an ending in Luxembourgish. And so much more possibilities for interesting staging as well.
Yea I was really excited about Chaild. The song “night call” isn’t perfect, but it is at least interesting and would have sounded different here. They should have brought in a producer to work with the artists to improve the songs
I think it’s similar to Estonia, where if you bring in a jury panel and get them to give scores, the result is that the beigest inoffensive songs get through. Cos anything divisive will get high scores but probably more low scores as well. Just look at cha cha cha last year. Some jurors put it last in the final
Some of these lyrics here man, they're like written randomly for the demo and somehow kept in the final production. They made it worse by introducing the songs with music videos that heavily emphasize these awfully generic lyrics.
Yeo that’s exactly it. If they had music videos for each song, then I would have just focused all my attention onto that instead. Really I’ve only got 3 things to talk about; the song, the visuals and the lyrics. The lyric videos were AI generated and just accentuated the lyrics with little to no visual elevation
Luxembourg's 4 wins have all come from foreign singers and songwriters (mostly, if not entirely), so I think they're trying to replicate the winning formula, but...
@@ESCTom compare this to a country like Ukraine. All those songs feel Ukrainian, and unique to those artists. Luxembourg have really missed the mark here.
For next year, they really have to choose 6 songs for the final. 2 in English, 2 in Luxembourgish and 2 in French to keep it interesting. This just ain't it.
@@seanlewis9429 Yeah, it's nice when a national final has developed a personality and point of view. Even a national final like UMK, aside from half the songs being in the local language, there isn't anything particularly "Finnish" feeling about most of them. But the specific variety of selected artists and songs feels like a feature of UMK that they've developed over time, and gives us a glimpse into the scene in today's modern Finland. There's zero point of view in Luxembourg's selection. God forbid it paints us a picture of what the scene and vibes are in Luxembourg because they must be bored to tears
It feels like that because only one of the artists got to keep their original song. The others were replaced with diferent songs written by artists outside of Luxembourg
The maker of Talis song (I don't know if she had a writer or did this on her on ) knows what he's doing for sure. The Refrain changes to english, you can see that behaviour in Korean songs as well. The singable lyrics in the refrain where a Mainpart of Kpops worldwide success. I think this concept is copied by the maker even though French lyrics could have been better in Eurovision because we europeans are much more used to hearing french lyrics.
What a painful work? I had similar feeling that most of the songs are trying to be fine and become bland. At first, I have to admit that I liked the french songs and Drowning in the rain. Now, I am sure the last is the better option.
😅😅 You listen and rate dull NFs so I don't have to or get confirmation on what I suspected. Now I wait you to get through the 24 songs in the Serbian selection...
I think Krick's song is actually fantastic and I'm so excited to see it live. It definitely deserves to win and will be in my top 10 almost certainly. That being said, I think you're being way too hard on these songs. I thought they were all decent except one or two and the French songs were good. But that's just my opinion
I’m not saying they aren’t decent. I’m saying there’s a total lack of story or character behind almost all of these songs. It’s quite clear that these songwriters are focusing their attention on the production and melody and the lyrics are an afterthought or nuisance. And especially considering there Are no music videos so I can’t react to visuals, the lyrics are emphasised even more. Songs should be rated down for not being about anything, but the delegation clearly gave it a pass
Extremely boring and disappointing after all the hype. Are the 5 jurors who selected them, the ones who voted in the national final, or was there a different jury?
@@emdove I’m like an eighth Luxembourgish and I’m really excited that their back. My oldest living great grandmother is 102 and a luxembourger and to be fair it’s like the only interesting part of my ethnicity.

Feel so embarassed. Watched Ireland's Eurosong and squirmed at Kielty's presenting and the panel's comments in the tiny Late Late studio. Then I watched the Luxembourg song contest and RTL's efforts really blew me away. Great tributes to Luxembourg's ESC history, proficient presenters, a big stage in the country's premier music venue, a slew of previous winners ... You'd really think that RTE was the broadcaster of the tiny country with no ESC participation in the last 30 years and that RTL were past record-holders who are there every year. 🤔🤨🙄

They are mainly written by Scandinavian writers in English lyrically poor, i have a feeling whatever song goes to Eurovision will fall at the first hurdle considering the quality of other countries entrants of past and current year. Im not sure the delegations been keeping up with the contest.
Oh boy. Someone was Mr Grumpy here 😂
Yes, i agree. This mightn't be a great National Final but I'm prepared to cut Luxembourg a little slack. 1st year back in decades. Might take a while to get up to speed. They have that excuse. Other countries can't use that excuse ( looking at you Denmark )
As for a winner?. It has to be Krick. Elsie Bey's dna is all over this and i love it. Meaningful lyrics and a bondesque melody does it for me everytime!
Quickly downloaded and think this would be an obvious qualifier in Malmö. Dare i say Top 10 potential?
You heard it first here Tom
Have a lie down and a VERY large camomile tea.
"Fighter" is so interesting
I need some help, what does Tom says before every song? Is it something french? I'm not a native speaker, and while I understand him pretty well, I just don't get what he says there. Subtitles don't help either 😅 I feel so dumb every single time!
“Wanna know my secret bang?”
It’s from siren song, Ukraine 2019
@@ESCTom ooooooh that makes sense! Thank you! Your "bang" just sounds kinda French to me, which is equally funny as it is embarrassing for me :D
I almost fell off my chair laughing when you called it "the worst NF, and I know the Malta NF exists". Well, it's not the worst; you haven't listened to Denmark yet.
Since this video, I’ve listened to Denmark ☠️
@@ESCTom My condolences.
What a hoot! I haven't laughed so much in a while.
Will you react to the PZE songs? :)
i filmed the reaction this morning but it will take me at least 2 days to edit it 😭
I hope you had enough time to listen to all songs 💜💜💜Teya Dora 👏🇷🇸@@ESCTom
I agree with the English comments. Not necessary. The French is wonderful!
Will Luxembourg have a 0% qualification rate?
☠️ ☠️☠️☠️☠️
It's a first one back I suppose. Lessons may be learned hopefully.
Though I prefer "Fighter" and "Paumee sur terre", this final is nothing to get excited about. Many sound like Melfest rejects. Luxembourg, you can do better!
What site do you use to rank your songs?
My eurovision scoreboard
You always say that one sentence before watching a video. 😂 May I ask what it means? Is it in Irish? I have always heard it as "Wanna know my secret bank" btw 😂
it is one of the lyrics from the song "Siren Song" by Maruv.
@@a.m.rifkia.3rd493 but is it bank? I thought he said bang. Also never would've recognised that without the context of the song 😂
@@emdoveit's actually "bang".
Yep it’s bang
Drowning In The Rain is my favourite, I can never complain with having another national final to follow ahahah
I was super excited to watch Luxembourg's national final when I heard they were having one, but that excitement died when the songs were released. :/ I really don't care enough about these songs to sit through the live show. I'll just hope they select Drowning in the Rain on Saturday because that's the only decent option here.
Obsessed with Tali’s song. Maybe I’m basic but I have it on repeat
The melodies of the songs aren’t bad. I’ve got “drop” in my head. It’s just the brazen lack of any attempt to give any of the songs any meaning
I wonder whether LUX will be gone again soon, cause I don't see them qualifying this year, except maybe for nostalgias sake.
You’re not only asking the person ;to sing a song now, they also need to fake their attachment to it cos they have no input into it
Why not dump the lyrics and get the paired artist to write a personal message about the song. That solves the meaningless lyric part AND make the song more personal to the artist
@@ESCTom oh absolutely, I'm not blaming songwriters at all. If I were in their position I'd be doing the same. It can just get a bit dull for us watching.
Naomi Ayé is my Number 1 and I really like it but it feels too French as if France would send that.
Naomi Aye was born in 2008, and she already has THAT voice. Yeah. The hell am I doing with my life...😅
Yea I didn’t realise she was so young. A little reminiscent of gala dragot
Tali fighter!
On the brightside I think Tali or Krick will probably win and those are the strongest songs (I like Naomi's song but I'd be shocked if it won)
Tho Chaild is the one I'm most disappointed about.
It’s a battle at the bottom for Denmark and lux
PLEASE REACT TO MALTA’S 🇲🇹 REVAMPED SONGS. THE VIDEO IS ON MISJA EUROVIZJA !
It will be both hilarious and sad to see fans of songs with clearly AI-generated "Scandinavian" gibberish.
the 100€ bills in the lyric video got me 😂😂😂 looks like a bad powerpoint presentation regarding economics, budgeting or smth
So true 😭 😂
Are you going to react to dansk melodi grand prix songs?
ive already filmed it, but i have a massive backlog of videos to edit
they bought in ceasar samson, christer bjorkman, and tali eshkoli in to judge the songs so no one it’s a pile of beige
I think it’s similar to Estonia, where if you bring in a jury panel and get them to give scores, the result is that the beigest inoffensive songs get through. Cos anything divisive will get high scores but probably more low scores as well. Just look at cha cha cha last year. Some jurors put it last in the final
And Jan Bors and Alex Panayi to select the finalists.
@@ESCTomBut do the five who selected the finalists get to vote in the national final too? I would expect a different jury for variation.
Andy and Rafe Ela song's chorus is Hamilton My shot 1 to 1. Lin Manuel Miranda should sue them
Some of these lyrics here man, they're like written randomly for the demo and somehow kept in the final production.
I think they should not do that since Eurovision has changed a LOT since they last won in 83
This is what I was afraid was going to happen when Sweden won.
Melfest rejects happen every single year. It’s on the other countries to not accept them 🤷♂️
Just two non-English songs...so disappointed. None of these songs feel authentic or interesting.
theres 0 personality in this NF
I think this concept is copied by the maker even though French lyrics could have been better in Eurovision because we europeans are much more used to hearing french lyrics.
we want reaction to Moldova as well 🤣
ill get there eventually but ive heard literally 0 hype so its low on the priority list
What a painful work? I had similar feeling that most of the songs are trying to be fine and become bland. At first, I have to admit that I liked the french songs and Drowning in the rain. Now, I am sure the last is the better option.
PZE songs when? :)
i filmed it this morning, itll take me 2+ days to edit cos its a huge amount of songs
😅😅 You listen and rate dull NFs so I don't have to or get confirmation on what I suspected. Now I wait you to get through the 24 songs in the Serbian selection...
28 songs 😭
I’ve already finished that video. It’s much more interesting
elsie bay is excellent
Appreciate the honesty. Really, maybe unpopular opinion but, all broadcasters should ban Swedish songwriters from their selections
i think many unofficially have
Krick was the best. I do feel politically Tali might be boycotted because of her nationality 😮
Extremely boring and disappointing after all the hype. Are the 5 jurors who selected them, the ones who voted in the national final, or was there a different jury?
Christer Björkman was in the judging panel. That's all you need to know.
Luxembourg is a business capitol, so yeah...
thats why there were 100 euro notes?
Maybe it's subliminal messaging. We bring in money, please vote for us!
@@emdove I’m like an eighth Luxembourgish and I’m really excited that their back. My oldest living great grandmother is 102 and a luxembourger and to be fair it’s like the only interesting part of my ethnicity.
Paumée sur terre for me, not hooked by any of the others
yeah, these are pretty bland songs... Believer is the only one that stood out for me, I love kinda nasal voices like that. and honestly I'm obsessed with the visuals and the font for that one. I hope they choose it so at least Luxembourg can qualify...
Luxembourg is almost 50% immigrants, so it can be misleading.
