    Its ironic because originaly they really emphasised that they want to fully represent luxembourg by letting only citizens from Luxembourg audition but then they changed almost every song to a song that was written by a foreign writter

    I would love to see you talk about older eurovisons more. You mentioning Den Vilda just reminded me of how good that song actually is and that I should listen to it right after this video. Idk I just think it would be fun to see you speak about eurovisons of the past and get some of your takes on the older entries.

    This selection makes vanilla look spicy. I listened to them on an Apple playlist and I can’t remember ANY of them. If Ireland choose ‘Next In Line’ tonight, maybe they can fly over to Luxembourg for tomorrow’s non- competition. They’d fit right in.

    It’s very samey which is very sad for Luxembourg’s big return. Tali has a cool song but krick is definitely the best one for them to send if they want to even qualify. It’ll also be Luxembourg’s first time in the semi finals

    Tom, you're so real for that "RANTING" timecode lolll. I agree! I have no idea why people on Twitter say this is a "strong NF". Where and how? Yes, all the songs sound presentable to a degree, but they're SO BORING at the same time. It is a low bar IMO. Let Krick go and improve the song selection next year is my advice to them. She could give them a decent placement for the first year after a huge break, but no win this year for sure.

    • @ESCTom

      lol, there were a couple of rants earlier in the video too, but im just so done with this NF already, im deleting it from my brain. these NF videos take so long to do so it makes it so much more frustrating when the whole thing is such a negative buzz on top of that

      Bad NFs are entertaining in a way. People were talk about a strong NF, but that is probably on back of the non-offensives and the fact that people tend to like Krick.

    • @a.m.rifkia.3rd493
      @a.m.rifkia.3rd493 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      you can't really expect a very-strong NF every single year from every single country, it's very hard to do. even Italy, Sweden and Ukraine have some ups and downs here and there. but I still agree that majority of the songs are there just to fulfill the quota/spot in the selection; not entirely based on diversity, personality and quality.

    I'm willing to cut RTL a bit of slack this year since it's their first time at ESC in 30 years, but yeah I do agree with your points about how they need to improve for next year. I just hope when they get some ESC experience that they'll be more likely to trust themselves and their local talent rather then relying on outside "help" like they did this year.

    I really like Drowning in the Rain but other than that there's very little to be excited about in this selection. I think it has potential to do pretty well in Eurovision as well, if it can survive a televote-only semi I think the juries will get it to top 10.

    I was so hyped for Luxembourg's return even though I had some feeling that they might not even qualify. Drowning in the rain seems to be the best option for them but I'm not sure if it's gonna qualify in no jury semis. Unless they got lucky with weaker semi and running order. Or people will just vote for them because they happy they returned

    while it is not easy to make the selection truly Luxembourgish vibe-wise, at least there is still something I can enjoy. therefore, I have only two faves here: Krick "Drowning in the Rain" and Tali Golergant "Fighter". personally, I want either of the two to win.

    I mean as you've mentioned Tom, its one thing if you get foreign songs in and the quality is there but when they dont have quality lyrics, when theres nothing unqie or interesting about them sonically then what's the point.
    I still think that perhaps the songs the artists entered werent strong either and I'm basing that off of Edsun kept his song and whilst its not bad it is near the bottom of most top lists.
    I'm quite biased in that I like a lot of the songs Elsie is involved in and with that Krick's song is my favourite and the one that I think has the most staging potential. I also quite like Tali's song but yeah, like yourself even though the melody at the end of the chorus is quite different and unexpected, I'm not sure it works with the vibe of the rest of the song. I think they should just have it entirely in French which ik doesn't mean lyrically its better necessarily but ig it makes the awkward lyrics less noticeable.
    I only really have a top 2 myself being
    1.Krick
    2. Tali
    wouldn't mind either winning but I do hope they have great staging because especially Krick's song, that has a lot of potential with atmospheric staging.

    • @ESCTom

      @@ESCTom but even if the French or Luxembourgish lyrics are also bad (mainly grammar-wise), then what is the point as well? it should only be about diversity, personality and quality, regardless of language (although native language of that country is still recommended).

    I remember distinctly that my main criticism to Loreen's Tattoo was that it was the same old overproduced Swedish pop ballad.
    Here we have a full final of nondescript, overproduced Swedish pop songs. Even the one that I like, which is Krick's, is in dire need of a rearrangement and that can go only two ways:
    - either simplify it and keep that ruckus away
    - build it up into the Bond-theme it could be.

  • @timschnitzel

    It's interesting that when the songs were released, some amount of diehard eurofans immediately checked them and considered the selection to be very good... and after a couple of days all the interest disappeared. That's exactly that effect of songs feeling like generated by AI that learned a lot of stuff from ESC-related Swedish, Norwegian, Italian and etc songwriters. Like, you can't do a national final more artificially, just by choosing singers and songs separately, first selecting singers from the auditions and just giving them specifically written slick pop songs by competent songwriters. So, it's not bad but this could've been any country's selection.

    Sad that the staging for "Drowning in the Rain" was so mediocre. You have this dramatic Elsie Bay song, and you just give it the generic gold and white 2007 ballad staging? The hell? Did Luxembourg not have access to Elsie Bay's previous stagings, both for herself and others? I realize she probably didnt have much creative control, but even the lyric video had better understanding of "the vibe" with its dramatic red, white and black. So disappointing.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, literally nothing happened, other than her grabbing the mic at one point. Very disappointing but that’s what’s been going on creatively so far in this national final. My guess is that the producers were very limiting and what was allowed because nobody had any props or storytelling at all in any of the stagings

    As for a winner?. It has to be Krick. Elsie Bey's dna is all over this and i love it. Meaningful lyrics and a bondesque melody does it for me everytime!

  • @patrickh3385
    @patrickh3385 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I too am quite underwhelmed by the songs on offer here - it feels far removed from the epic return I thought we'd get. Perhaps Luxembourg have been a bit too ambitious in organising an eight-song national final? Given how much the contest has changed since they last participated, I do wonder if they're trying to run before they can walk. The important thing is that they persevere with it even if they do poorly; it could take them time to find their feet in the modern contest, just as many long-standing participating countries have struggled in recent years.
    But anyway, back to the songs...I fully agree that Drowning in the Rain is the best by a country mile. Let's hope the Luxembourgish public realise that!

    The problem with a song sounding Swedish is not that Swedish songs are bad but that Sweden masters music enough to select the best from the rest. Honestly I feared this would happen when Luxembourg announced a NF. What is the point if you're just going to be a dumping ground for Melfest rejects? These entries are all competent and enjoyable but instantly forgettable. Luckily, I am really enjoying "Drowning in the Rain" which I have had on repeat, so there is hope for Luxembourg, though Krik's promotional picture leaves me worried : I am not sure she's that type of girl. Can she embody that song? I'm not sold yet, but we'll see...

    @dave1361 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I don't know if this was a situation like used to happen with Operacion Triunfo in Spain where you had artists get through and then songs attached to them. Here we've ended up with some talented artists but a few Melfest/MGP rejects. When I first heard them, I was interested in a few, but then I heard all and then when I listened again it wasn't as interesting. I like Drowning in the Rain but it's a bit meh. It just sounds like an Elsie Bay song - and I know some people don't like that critique, but tough - and when it's being sung by someone else who hasn't had any input into lyrics or music it feels inauthentic.
    I'm rather bored of seeing the same songwriters churning out the same things over and over again with minor variations and being lauded as genius because of it. Give us things that represent the country, not a cynical attempt to appeal to as many as possible. Look at Vidbir or UMK, for example, and there's far less music by committee.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yea although really the blame is on the countries that pick the rejects up. These songwriters send out their scraps, and it’s 100% on other countries if they decide to feast on them. You can see that some countries clearly reject them now. For example Denmark doesn’t have any Swedish songs this year, I think that’s a conscious decision.
      Pairing artists artificially with songwriters, does it really work that often? You’re not only asking the person ;to sing a song now, they also need to fake their attachment to it cos they have no input into it
      Why not dump the lyrics and get the paired artist to write a personal message about the song. That solves the meaningless lyric part AND make the song more personal to the artist

    I'm gonna go on a limb and guess the artists with the subjectively weaker songs might be mostly doing this to get more exposure as an artist. I'll cut Luxembourg some slack since the contest has changed a lot since 1993 and I can see why they're playing it safe. Obviously if they continue national finals and they're as bland as Germany, Malta, Ireland, Denmark, etc then we might have some issues. Maybe the stagings will make the blander songs better than the studio too. On the brightside I think Tali or Krick will probably win and those are the strongest songs (I like Naomi's song but I'd be shocked if it won)
    Tho Chaild is the one I'm most disappointed about. His other music is WAY better than this song. Hopefully if he tries again he keeps his distance from the Melfest rejects.

      I think it shows how much chaild loves Eurovision that he’s still there, it must have been a total kick in the teeth for him to drop his song for something so bland. I was most hyped for his song, so really disappointed in the result

    Wait for Luxembourg to mess it up and picked Chaild or Edsun because they are the most famous ones of the line-up instead of the only song that has maybe a shot at qualifying with Krick. And even then I doubt Krick's song would even go through. I thought this was the worst NF but Denmark decided to take the cake today.

    There are a few songs here I don't mind listening to and I totally agree with your top 2: Krick does stand out as the most intriguing one; I hope she'll be good live and then I would definitely support her. I also like Joel Marques because of his amazing voice; the song suffers because the chorus is less interesting than the verses but I still enjoy it, despite the weird lyrics.
    Yes, it's a very safe, middle-of-the-road national final. Even Denmark has more variety this year. But I guess people may have been expecting a bit too much from a tiny country which has been away for over thirty years. I actually don't know how vibrant their music scene is, but the singers are all from Luxembourg and something homegrown would probably have felt more authentic to them than all this Scandi stuff. For instance I know that Chaild is a really interesting artist, and it's annoying that he's got this generic G:son song here.

      Chaild entered the contest with "Night Call," but I guess the broadcaster didn't like it? It's a good track, so it's quite unfortunate why it didn't make it.
      Also Maz, who was featured on the track, suddenly was out when he was in. It's so weird.
      Chaild is the only big artist there and they gave him that noise...

      @@seanlewis9429 Yeah, it's nice when a national final has developed a personality and point of view. Even a national final like UMK, aside from half the songs being in the local language, there isn't anything particularly "Finnish" feeling about most of them. But the specific variety of selected artists and songs feels like a feature of UMK that they've developed over time, and gives us a glimpse into the scene in today's modern Finland. There's zero point of view in Luxembourg's selection. God forbid it paints us a picture of what the scene and vibes are in Luxembourg because they must be bored to tears

    The maker of Talis song (I don't know if she had a writer or did this on her on ) knows what he's doing for sure. The Refrain changes to english, you can see that behaviour in Korean songs as well. The singable lyrics in the refrain where a Mainpart of Kpops worldwide success. I think this concept is copied by the maker even though French lyrics could have been better in Eurovision because we europeans are much more used to hearing french lyrics.

      I’m not saying they aren’t decent. I’m saying there’s a total lack of story or character behind almost all of these songs. It’s quite clear that these songwriters are focusing their attention on the production and melody and the lyrics are an afterthought or nuisance. And especially considering there Are no music videos so I can’t react to visuals, the lyrics are emphasised even more. Great tributes to Luxembourg's ESC history, proficient presenters, a big stage in the country's premier music venue, a slew of previous winners ...
