    One of my favorite parts of this song is the way "I am not throwing away my shot" kind of changes in tone. At the beginning of the musical it feels inspirational and courageous, yet here it feels angry, and you see in Hamilton the way he repeats it, it's almost like he feels insulted that Angelica or Eliza would dare to ask him to wait or slow down or reconsider his ambitions, angrily declaring to them "I am not throwing away my shot!" and the final time he says it, it's just so full of anger, like no one can possibly stop him.

    • @YoBGS
      @YoBGS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      I wonder if it's because the sentiment behind it is changing. At first it's a statement of optimism, but by the end of Act 1 he doesn't want his sacrifice of time to be in vane, he doesn't want Laurens' death to be for nothing, the time he could've spent with Eliza, etc etc. It's almost like his shot becomes his only option.

    Should be noted that his talking at the constitutional convention basically ruined hamilton, Burr says it garrenteed free ammunition and it did. IIRC He basically put forth a monarchy like system that got people to see him as a monarchist by most and it ate up a lot of good will.

    • @sparvierosart
      @sparvierosart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      Also his talk about a constitutional monarchy may or may not have been planned with Madison (his friend and political ally at the time) in order to make the next plan proposed (Madison’s one) appearing much more palatable. Chernow in his book proposes this interpretation which it has great merits. Also it must be pointed out that many believed that an elective monarchy with a strong and powerful parliament could be a viable option at the time. Many in Europe believed that Washington would be king, but also the brother of Frederich II was asked to stand by in case the net king of America would have been chosen among old royal blood. Now it sounds kind of ludicrous, but it wasn’t in those yearly years. Also, yes, Hamilton with his defence of monarchy gave a lot of ammunitions to his future enemies.

      I love how Eliza's catch phrase is changed to carry so many different meanings over the course of the play.
      When we first heard it in Schuyler Sisters, it was "...how lucky we are to be alive RIGHT NOW." - it's fortunate that we were born in this time that will go down in history, and we are lucky to be a part of it. "History is happenin' in Manhattan"
      During the war, Eliza shifts it to "...how lucky we are to be ALIVE right now." - with so much bloodshed and turmoil, it was a miracle that Eliza and Alexander are alive and healthy. "Just stay alive, and that would be enough."
      Now, Alexander shifts it to "...how lucky WE are to be alive right now." - some aren't so fortunate, and we need to take this blessing and make the best of it. "I have so much work to do."
      And we've only just finished Act I.

      @@YoBGS I’d describe Hamilton as “unsatisfied” haha but seriously I think LMM is portraying that even though Hamilton got everything he wished for it still wasn’t enough, he still had work to do. And I kind of think he throws Eliza’s words back at her like venom, not excitement. Like he’s saying look I’m here and I’m alive and this country is still a mess so look around I’m going to fix it. I think he was annoyed and angry in a sense because even when he achieved the biggest goals in the world, all he saw was more work, so he wasn’t satisfied and I think all the characters were realizing at this point that he never would be, including Alex, which isn’t exactly a great thought.

    You touched a lot on the alleged personal relationship between Hamilton and Laurens, but I don't think that's the main plot point that's happening here. Hamilton gets a letter from Laurens Sr. that basically says, "my son died before he got the chance to accomplish his dreams." To which Hamilton responds with, "I have so much work to do," with an implied, "before I also die." That's why we get Non-Stop: because of Laurens' death, Hamilton is now afraid of dying before getting to accomplish his own goals and dreams, so from then on he lives as though he's "running out of time."

    • @elly_hermione
      @elly_hermione 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I'm not sure about that actually. As it was pointed several times in the show, Hamilton has always been sort of racing death - all his 'I imagined death so much it feels more like a memory', 'I never thought I lived past twenty'. He already knows death by sight: he lost his mother, his cousin, his whole town to the hurricane - death is nothing new to him, as you probably remember, he was 'more than willing to die' (quote from Meet Me Inside) in the battlefield. Of course, the death of a friend hits different than just some hypothetical death, but still, Hamilton has dealt with it before. I think at this moment he is more burying himself in work to relieve pain than actually fearing death (I mean, more than usual - as I said, he is always sort of ready that his next day will be his last day, so he is doing as much as he can to build his legacy).

    • @YoBGS
      @YoBGS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I guess my point was more framing Laurens' death as a reminder to Hamilton that he IS in fact mortal. Even if we assume it's only a friendship, losing your best friend is enough to make you numb. That's what leads a lot of people to addiction. Just instead of alcohol or drugs, Hamilton's addiction was work. So basically when his close friend died he shut down and threw himself into his work, both because he didn't know when he too would die AND because he just had no desire to do anything "fun" since that had been taken from him.

    • @MeganTheLibrarian3
      @MeganTheLibrarian3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I interpret it more as him realizing everything Laurens didn't get to accomplish, so Hamilton has to get to work accomplishing all those things almost in Lauren's honor/memory. Like there's so much still to be done...and also yeah, life is short.

    An easy to miss, but in my opinion very important character detail here: Eliza started out with "that would be enough," referring to the simple joy of living together, a family in love and nothing more or less. Partway through Non-Stop, she asks if she could even have a fraction of his time and love, "WOULD that be enough?" As he decides to go work with Washington and leave his family to help build their country, she wonders, "WHAT would be enough?!" She's begging for even the smallest fraction of his attention and love, but she's finally coming to realize what her sister did: he's never going to be satisfied.

    Technically, the murder trial at the beginning of the song involving Levi Weeks does not occur here in history, so the U.S. did last a while without any recorded murders. The real trial happens in 1800, so the play is about 20 years early. He was acquitted after only a few minutes of deliberation, but the trial was so big and sensationalized that he was guilty in the eyes of the public.
    Personally, I think the play's choice is good for storytelling, much like the other historical changes.
    Although Madison wrote fewer essays in the Federalist Papers, his are some of the most influential. For example, the system of checks and balances among the branches of government are clearly outlined in Madison's work. Hamilton's essays were much more controversial, such as his essays stating a Bill of Rights was unnecessary (because rights not listed in the Bill may no longer be considered rights).
    You've seen the bullet up close! She was killed right after "You'll Be Back" and was the literal bullet at the beginning of "Stay Alive." She was the soldier fighting alongside Laurens in "Yorktown." You'll continue to see her throughout the play, so keep an eye on who she interacts with.

    • @YoBGS
      @YoBGS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's a very good choice to include it, it's just, i guess, ironic? They pretty much cut from a war where, ya know, murder is happening in droves, to a spot where someone is in trouble for it in the span of just a few songs.

    • @V_4_Versace
      @V_4_Versace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it depends on your school of thought as to who’s essays are more influential. I think for people trying to understand the Constitution and the minds of the Founders, look to Madison. But for people looking to push the arch of the country further and seeing what could be, look to Hamilton. Interestingly, in law school we mostly read Hamilton’s essays because as lawyers we should already understand the law of the land, but as lawyers it’s our duty to move the country forward through the laws and it’s literally our job to read between the lines and find facts in what is only implied, which Hamilton’s essays do a great job at.

    This is a special kind of song in musical theatre known as a “quodlibet” (literally “that which pleases” and also a term used in political and theological debate to describe a point of discussion) a medley that attempts to interweave and sum up every relevant theme that’s shown up so far it can to compare and contrast where everyone is in their shared arcs and set the stage for what’s to come-usually the climax of the entire play. When done poorly, it can be a confusing mess, but when pulled off it is a masterstroke that elegantly lays out the intricate interactions and conflicts the play has set up and now needs to resolve. Nonstop, while not my favorite song in the play, is its greatest feat of technical compositional skill in the entire play and to my mind one of the two best quodlibets ever on Broadway, the other being One Day More from Les Miserables.

    Laurens *Interlude.*
    "I have so much work to do" -- EXACTLY! Alexander throws himself into workaholism, largely as a way of dealing with his grief (and maybe also partly because he wants to make his mark, lest his dreams too die with him.)
    Okay, the Bullet.
    She is the ensemble member whom we see get her neck snapped by a British soldier just after King George 3's first appearance (as he makes good on his threat to "send a fully armed battalion to remind [us] of his love-- 32,000 troops, in NY Harbor, to be specific). FROM THAT MOMENT, whenever she makes an appearance, she symbolizes the presence of Death. I'm sure I missing some, but offhand, the major ones I remember (from Act 1):
    * In 'Stay Alive' - she literally is the bullet which just misses Hamilton
    * She is the ensemble member who ends up next to Hamilton in 10 Duel Commandments.
    * In 'Yorktown' - the last time we see John Laurens prior to 'Interlude', he takes down a British soldier; and WHO is there helping him? That's right: the Bullet. They shake hands; 2 scenes later, comes a letter from Laurens's father.
    - Oh. And she is also the one who snatches the paper out of Hamilton's hand at 16:59
    ...I will also note that there Is ONE appearance of the Bullet in act 2 which I have not heard an explanation for. At one point she interacts briefly with King George, giving him news from the US. Obviously, he does _not_ die soon after in the show...
    Madison is not talked about much in the play-- _YET._ We do meet him in act 2.

    And here we start to see the more... self destructive aspects of Hamilton's ambition. He can't be satisfied because it's never enough for him. He's someone who's been pushing himself all his life to leave behind a lasting legacy. So much so that even now that his legacy is largely cemented and he can finally take a break he can't process it. He is unable to accept that he's done enough because he's gripped so tightly by a fear that it won't ever be enough, and so he keeps striving and striving to do more and more even to the point of somewhat pushing away the people who love him so he can continue to grow his legacy. Going so far as to, unintentionally, break the promise he made to Eliza to never make her feel helpless by making her feel that way in this song when he leaves to become the country's Head of Treasury department, and she feels helpless because she loves him so much, and even though she knows he loves her just as much, she also know she'll never be able to stop him because... Well...
    He will never be satisfied.

    “Soon that attitude may be your doom”- you never know when or how the foreshadow may be presented…
    Something that doesn’t get mentioned enough- we get a look at Hamilton as a political operative. With their differences in perspective and Hamilton’s ego, think about him going to Burr with ‘you’re better at this than me’ in order to achieve his goal.
    Hamilton/Eliza- I think the scene highlights their on-going differing priorities. Hamilton’s vision is off on whatever(in this case Angelica), and Eliza is focused on their family. He doesn’t even notice her until she is right in his face, as she at that exact moment again repeats her belief that him being alive is enough. Oh, the timing…

Not positive of her age exactly but she was very young and sickly. Theodosia was the only one to make it to an adult. No spoiler for her. She had 2 half brothers from her mother’s first husband, the British officer. He was extremely protective of her and stressed and pushed her to be highly educated. Speaking about the Bullet, she has appeared already in Stay Alive, but her role there wasn't very noticeable, but you'll definitely notice her at the end of the show. The same actress (who is none other than Ariana DeBose, now an Oscar winner for West Side Story!) appears in other small roles during the show, for example, she is that woman who gets a letter and gets killed by the redcoats between You'll Be Back and Right-Hand Man, and she will appear in another King George's song later as a messenger, and it means... well, a certain thing, but I think it's better to stay spoiler-free right now :) But it is very interesting to watch her when you know what is her part after all. You definitely should read about her after you watch the musical and then try to notice her while re-watching!

      See once I'm done with the reactions I'm looking forward to going back and pausing on my own and finding all of these little details. It's the one downside to the fact that I watch these with ya'll for the first time. Sometimes things slip through!

      @@YoBGS re-watching Hamilton to point out little details is great fun as there are just too many of them - it's simply impossible to notice everything at once. I'm sort of jealous, watching Hamilton for the first time and then re-watching and learning about little things is mind-blowing! And, unfortunately, happens only once in one's life :D

    i mean… to be fair, hamilton at the constitutional convention basically was up there like "but maybe we SHOULD have a monarchy," which was Not Popular, as you'd imagine. he had the very bad habit of speaking every thought that came into his mouth, which got and will continue to get him in a lot of trouble. a bit of an oversharer, our guy.
    * basically, his idea for a government was that senators and the president (not his names, but close enough for our purposes) would be chosen by special electors and serve for life. a second branch -- let's call it congress -- would be elected by the people and serve three years, and state governors would be chosen by the president, who again was serving for life and chosen by a small, special group. if you can't already see the problems with this, well… it did NOT go over well, and it gave hamilton the reputation of being a Monarchist for the rest of his life, which as you can imagine was not a great thing after JUST defeating the british.
    the first vice president was john adams, and he was absolutely the right choice for a whole HOST of reasons. hamilton was accomplished, but he was a hot-head, constantly getting into and picking fights, writing and publishing endless essays -- to support the country and his mentor washington, yes, but also just because people slighted him and he had to fight back. he was the dude who would write 10 paragraph text messages telling you why he was mad if you annoyed him even a little bit, lol.
    hamilton and eliza really did seem to be very close. they had a ton of kids as you say, but more than that hamilton throughout his life talked her up in letters not just to her or angelica (he and angelica were great friends and pen pals), but to many others over the years. she gets some flack from some scholars for not being a huge intellictual who wrote endless essays like her husband, but eliza was quite bright, stubborn, deeply loyal, and the two just seem to have just LIKED one another. in real life, angelica had recently eloped and married a little bit BEFORE hamilton met the family. this actually caused hamilton and eliza some problems, because they also wanted to elope but philip schyuler was still pretty sore about angelica's move and they were "forced" into a courtship of about six months before they could marry.
    i'd also like to caution against overstating hamilton's and laurens's affair. they were undoubtedly very close and some of their letters were pretty flirty… but it's hard to say with any certainty what was really going on. actually, i find the letter where hamilton tells laurens about his and eliza's engagement to be the most telling clue that they might have had some sort of fling. in almost every other written letter from the time where hamilton mentions eliza, he quite simply cannot stop gushing about how wonderful and perfect he thinks she is; to laurens he basically is just "eh, i got engaged… she's okay," which very much reads at LEAST like he's aware laurens will be displeased by the news. (laurens was married the entire time they were friends, actually.) they certainly had a flirtation (hamilton… tended to be pretty flirty in general, with other men as well), but i'd be careful thinking of it as "they were deeply in love" even if they HAD had a relationship of that nature. it's ultimately a small part of both of their lives, and not a character defining event for either man.
    anyway, i'll leave this essay off here with one musical-specific bit of trivia: play very close attention to how burr introduces hamilton as the play goes on: he starts off with "how does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore," and you can tell how much burr is resenting hamilton by how much more passive-aggressive this list gets.

    At 4:32 to the left of Hamilton, or sitting in the chair at 5:30 is the actress that plays The Bullet, you can usually recognize her by her curly hair. Near the beginning of the musical, in "You'll Be Back", a character she is playing is killed. Afterwards, whenever she interacts with a character they are usually fated to die.
    In "Stay Alive" she carries a bullet right over Hamilton's head. In "Yorktown" she helps Laurens kill a British soldier, after which they shake hands and Laurens dies shortly after. You can usually find her just existing around Hamilton during the musical. She appears a couple more times through out the 2nd act, so try and keep an eye out for her.

    Another thing to pay attention to in the 2nd act; The more frustrated Burr becomes with Hamilton, the more his voice has a Caribbean sound when he sings about him. it's a slow-growing insult that isn't mentioned much but I think is brilliant!
    Also, Jasmine Cephas Jones, who plays Peggy Schuyler in the 1st half, plays Mariah Reynolds in the 2nd half.

    you've seen the bullet, she's appeared a lot before. however, i believe that you shouldn't worry too much about locating her and just focus on enjoying the musical in full. try finding her in your second watch instead. i tried to locate her a lot in my first watch and it distracted me from the lyrics and the overall dance/performance the other actors were doing.

The fact that I managed to have it not turn out to be one of the 51 written by Hamilton was disappointing but the fact that I read any of them was exciting. I think that same class had us read part of Common Sense, too.

    The bullet is Ariana Debose. Shes the girl seen in stay alive, when a bullet narrowly misses Alexander in the beginning of the song. She has that super unique hair. She was stabbed by a redcoat in "You'll be back" at the very end of the song. After the bullet passed Hamilton, she was basically considered an omen of bad luck. She was seen in Yorktown with John Laurens and later he was killed. And you'll see her later killing many others INCLUDING Hamilton himself.

    The Bullet is played by now Oscar winner Ariana DeBose. She is part of the ensemble, Sally to Thomas Jefferson, the woman who whispers "John Adams" to the King, and one of the two girls Phillip propositions before his duel, among other things. There is rarely a group moment she isn't on stage. As "The Bullet", she is the Harbinger of Death. She is present at or physically touches every character who dies in the story at some point. In the Hamilton/Burr duel, (SPOILERS) she slowly carries the bullet across the stage as Hamilton monologues.

    "the Bullet" is an ensemble cast member that is first seen conspiring against the king at the end of "You'll be back" so is killed quite early on. From that point on throughout the show she represents death. every time a character interacts with her on stage they are killed. Its really the only way you know a character has died, until act two when they switch roles but can be quite confusing if missed. its fun to go back and watch for her in the background.
