Not so fun fact: While Hamilton was dismissing any concern about Lafayette, Lafayette was actually sitting in prison as a POW after being captured while trying to escape to America. He wouldn’t escape until Napoleon helped him out 5 years later
Worst line in the play. "Yorktown." Lafayette: I'll bring freedom to my people if I'm given the chance. Hamilton: We'll be with you when you do. Lafayette: Go, lead your men! Hamilton: 'Til we meet again. Gut punch on "We'll be with you when you do." Really, Hamilton? REALLY?
C B Yeah Angelica and her husband hired a doctor to sneak Lafayette out of prison, but he got lost after escaping and they recaptured him until Napoleon saved him lol
The thing about Hamilton was that he was brilliant man but as Burr says he couldn't just shut his mouth. He would talk for hours which annoyed everyone cause when Hamilton had an idea he just said it without thinking it through first. The man literally suggested that positions of Goverment should be handed down in the family. Like if the father died then his son would automatically be appointed the position. Imagine saying that to a group of people who just fought a war to break away from a king? That's insane! Everyone knew Hamilton was smart but didn't like him because he couldn't see his own flaws.
So in cabinet battle 2, Hamilton says "Lafayette's a smart man he'll be fine." NO HE WAS NOT. He was mostly in a jail cell, I laugh at that line every single time I hear it. Jefferson and Madison are the people who irritate Hamilton to be who he is in act 2. And Lafayette and Mulligan are also the people who make sure that Hamilton is who he is in act 1. Odd parallel.
There's so much intention in LMM's writing. I have watched this more times than I should admit but I still learn some nuance that was escaping me all the watchings prior. It's glorious genius! Thanks for pointing out that parallel!
That's why in the starting song 'Alexander Hamilton', Daveed digs and Oak was singing " *We* fought *with* him" which makes it a line that goes two ways
Jefferson saying the line "Smells like new money dresses like fake royalty" never fails to crack me up. I mean... look at Jefferson's outfit! This guy is wearing a magenta coat with frills! He has no right to call Alexander Hamilton extra!😂
As someone who grew up between VA and SC (the most influential southern states during the time), saying someone is “New Money” was one of the biggest disses you could say to them. Basically calling him an outsider who can’t be trusted.
The difference is Jefferson comes from an OLD money background, and Old Money/Patrician and New Money/Bourgeois have a long history of distrust. Basically New Money sees Old Money as Classist layabouts who did nothing to earn their wealth and just want to keep them down, while Old Money sees New Money as tryhard scammers constantly trying to impress everyone with tacky wallet-measuring contests. And to be fair, they’re both right.
Jefferson felt he was entitled to dress fancy AF because he was 'Old Money.' He felt like Hamilton was to brash and flashy so for him it wasn't deserved. He was super snobby and entitled xD
Jefferson is in a more understated brown version of the costume in the off-broadway production. It was changed to Magenta because Diggs' Jefferson was reminding people of Prince so they put him in purple. Magenta just happened to be opposite to green on the color wheel so it worked. Also while Jefferson presented himself in a 'look at me I don't care what people think so I'll answer the front door of the White House in pajamas and slippers way', he loved everything he considered high class in foods, French fashion, wines, books, architectural, design etc. There is always two sides to Jefferson.
Daveed as Jefferson carries Act 2! Jefferson jealous of Hamilton being the "teacher's pet," and finally willing to call him out and do something about it. Great songs and Keep up the great work!
Re: the censoring of "Motherfucking" in this song: LMM said that he agreed to censor it and one other (in Act 1 when Mulligan says "I get the **** back up again!") so that Disney would agree to stream it on Disney+ as a PG-13 film. Or, as LMM put it: "I literally gave two fucks so kids could see it." :)
Hamilton doesn't have to back down because he knows that Washington's mind was already made up to stay out of France. The meeting here is perfunctory so that Jefferson can't claim that his concerns were unheard. But he can complain later (which he did, but not in the play) that he was kinda railroaded.
Fun fact: Madison wrote letters to himself. I cant remember if it was congress or whoever it was but still. Congress: we should write a letter to Washington to tell him we can't wait to see him Washington: oooo a letter. Hey Madison can you respond to this letter for me Madison: okk Congress: ooo a response. Hey Madison can you respond to this letter for me Madison: sure This went on for so long and I live for it
I can see the parallels between Burr and Madison. There is also the fact that both of them were at one point people who Hamilton seemed to consider to be allies. All of act 1, he seems to be at least friendly with Burr between his wedding and even the section of Non-Stop where he tries to get Burr to help with defending the constitution. When that fails, he presumably goes to Madison for help with the Federalist Papers as Madison is known to have written 29 of them. By this point both of them don’t like Hamilton because of his policies/jealousy on Burr’s part which will come to even more of a head between now and the end of the show.
The coolest part about the hardest bar in Washington on your side is that it’s one of the last lines written! Coincidentally I just watched an old interview where Daveed Diggs said Lin realized there wasn’t a show off moment for him in act 2 like he had during Guns and ships. So Lin added the line when the show was already in previews. Also, Daveed said it was his favorite bar to perform every night. It’s really fun to get right
Alexander Hamilton in real life was a bit on the shorter size for men of the time (aprox 5’7”) with apparently a lighter build especially in his prime years. He was considered very attractive with a handsome face with blue eyes, he also had reddish-brown hair. He was said to be very enthusiastic and rather social when around people with a jolly personality. Though I don’t doubt he would be a fierce man at times when needed.
Oh, he was. Due to his lifetime of struggles, he was a bit, uh...thin skinned and bullheaded. His duel with Burr wasn't the only duel he'd ever been in. It's just the only one that resulted in a death on one side or the other. (I'm pretty sure all the others were resolved with both sides "throwing away their shots" for lack of a better term.)
5:01 You weren't ready. 🤣🤣🤣 Honestly, Alex's intense response isn't all that shocking when you think about it. He went off on a guy simply for praising King George III.
When you get to it, please make sure to watch Blow us all away, Stay Alive (Reprise), and It's quiet uptown all in the same sitting. It will lose a bit of impact if you split them apart.
I'm now officially obsessed with these reactions. I check for new ones every time I get on the computer. YoBGS, you make watching Hamilton for the thousandth time SOOOO entertaining! Thanks for your dedication to the project!
yeah Jefferson's "Im in the cabinet, I am complicit to watching him grabbing at power and kissin it, if Washington isnt gon' listen to disciplined dissidents this is the difference this kid is out!" Is one of my favorite lines in hamilton.
LMM has said in interviews that the most glorious 16 bars he every wrote was actually for Hamilton which he cut during workshops so everyone would know that if he cut his own verses that it any of theirs were cut for the betterment on the show. However, I agree that "Washington on your Side" does have some of the best stand out writing/lyrics of the show. The bars cut were during the Adams Administration but don't give away anything (other than the fact that Hamilton doesn't respect John Adams even though they are in the same party): th-cam.com/video/oUI8b17YGx8/w-d-xo.html
Damn the mouse for dulling the impact of "The Battle of Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)" and "Washington On Your Side" by censoring the F-bomb.
9:30 well yeah he's the protagonist but at the end of the day he's still a self serving glory hungry two-faced no good politician who got his station through hollow promises and by being pretty much adopted by the big boss in charge, dude had zero decorum, he spend half his life waiting to die and then when he failed to do so he spent the rest of it thinking he was invincible and above everybody else. This musical cleans up some of Hamilton's real life atrocities (all the politicians were awful people by all standards) but they couldn't erase them all or else there wouldn't be a story worth making a musical about.
Love the Strange Planet t-shirt! Also, I always get a laugh at Jefferson's digs about Hamilton's clothing when he's so completely extra all the time in his purple coats and frilly collar/cuffs.
I'm just gonna point out that when they're debating giving France aid, the French rebels seemed pretty intent on having Lafayette's head in a basket too. He had outright fled France, and tried to return to the US, only to get imprisoned and shuffled around Europe. The Americans tried to help as best they could, but they hadn't set up diplomatic relations with much of Europe yet, so it took a while for progress to be made.
And as its pointed out, its hard to give aid when you don't know who is leading the country and the people are rioting in the streets. The cabinet meeting this song refers to took place in janurary of 1793, a few months earlier in September of 1992, a mob killed around 1,200 prisoners (most of whom were priests in five days).

Usually, I don't particularly mind the performance in the recording, but Jefferson's "Daddy's calling" is _really_ flat here. On the album, it's spoken in a beautifully trolling tone. I highly recommend checking it out on the official soundtrack.
I like how Daveed played this scene - he's playing around and making fun of Alexander in battle 1 but helping France was something Jefferson REALLY cared about and you can see the anger he has in this scene, especially after Washington rules against him.
This musical is just so dang catchy. Even a year after first seeing it, I still start mentally singing whenever I think random words or phrases. "Nice" becomes "It must be nice~" etc.
Oh, I'm really looking forward to you reacting to We Know (which will be after four more songs if I'm not mistaken)! The rhymes, consonances and harmonies are quite as brilliant as in Washington On Your Side", and it was probably the first song I've heard from Hamilton, I just love it
Wait-- _Daveed_ flipped the most from Act 1 to Act 2?? I have a hard time imagining a bigger flip than Hereules Mulligan to James Madison. ...Unless maybe AndPeggy to Mariah Reynolds. THAT Line- Jefferson's long run-on- it always bugs me as having a few too many syllables, 3 too many, to be specific. It feels like it messes up the rhythm or beat or something. My ear wants it to end something like, "If Washington ain't gonna listen to disciplined dissidents, _this is it,_ this kid is Out"
Daveed’s flow changed the most because it went from one end of the spectrum to the other. The thing about Hercules is that as Madison he’s been neutral so far. You have a good point, my brain just isn’t doing a great job explaining it haha
Also the parallels between Peggy and Mariah are interesting because the way the play represents them for the story, they are both being manipulated by others and used as a pawn. With Peggy, it is her sisters trying to get her to break the rules and her restrictions as a Schuyler sister which the other two talk about a lot. Although her sisters mean well, she is being dragged around and dismissed. With Mariah, she is being used by her abusive husband for money and Hamilton for company. They are both in a situation in which they feel no control in their lives. They feel helpless which they both sing in the musical.
A bit of Back History on Lafayette, he was for freedom but he actually didn't want to completely overthrow the monarchy, he was hoping to change the government to be one of a constitutional monarchy like what they have in Great Britain and for the first few years of the French revolution he was one of the most powerful men in France, but things went south when the people decided to overthrow the monarchy all together and labeled him a monarchist . He ended up getting captured in what is Present day Belgium and his wife and daughters joined him in prison, but his oldest Son made his way to the Americas and stayed with the Hamilton's for a while. Sadly Hamilton and Lafayette never met again in person but Hamilton had said in a letter to Lafayette that their friendship would “survive all revolutions and all vicissitudes.”
In Cabinet Battle #1 Aaron Burr is not present for the rap battle. However, after being done “waiting for it” and grabbing the senate seat in “Schuyler Defeated” Aaron Burr is “In the room where it happens” that room in this case being the cabinet battle room.
A protagonist is who we follow on the story, the central focus of a play/book. Not necessarily beloved by everyone, that's a bad writing sign, Mary sue or Gary stu
5:02 and 13:21 I came back to rewatch this because of these two moments and your reactions, especially jokingly predicting "Madison gonna break it down?" and then seeing a joke prediction actually happen. 😂
Oh man! I’ve been watching your videos and had no idea where you were from….until my sister went to a minor league baseball game today and posted videos of my nephew on the field with a blow up guitar in some contest. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW…there you are with your Mohawk. Crazy small world.
This was my favorite one to memorize, and that line that you love so much, is also my favorite line in the musical, even though it’s all unbelievably amazing! My shot has some of my other favorites, but really how do you chose favorites in this musical?
As a non native speaker, this line is also ond of the hardest, even harder than guns and ships as a whole. The whole musical was hard to learn, but goddamn I had so much trouble trying to keep up with Daveed Diggs. I love it and always will.
⚠️!!!!SPOILER!!!!⚠️ I have no idea if your up to some of this, so I'm putting a spoiler warning! The bullet was the first to die. She was killed for suspected espionage right after you'll be back. She then becomes the omen of death. At the beginning of 'Stay Alive' she carries the bullet that narrowly misses Hamilton. In YorkTown she is the one that helps Laurens kill the redcoat, shakes his hand, then (spoiler, idk if you're up to this) he is next to die. !!!!DEFINITE NOT UP TOO THIS, CONTINUE AT OWN COST!!!! During 'Blow Us All Away' (Are we up to this song yet? I can't remember)she is the one to tell Philip (have we met Philip yet?) where to find George Eacker, (And flirts with him! Philip is literally flirting with death!) and then Philip is next to go bye. During the final battle, she again catches a bullet (fired by Burr), and if you watch her, she gets closer and closer to Hamilton while he is doing his soliloquy until Eliza gets on stage. At this point the Bullet is stopped by other members of the ensemble, the time freeze is abandoned, and we all know what happens next. Sorry for the spoiler :)
Awesome videos so far, One of my favourite things about this song, is have you noticed that Jefferson won't turn his back to Burr unless Madison is around? Then starts manipulating Burr, you can tell because he does the Marionette Dance behind Burr, similar to what Burr is doing in the "Room Where it Happens", he points Burr to Madison to "make sure he knows the plan, so Jefferson isn't involved." Burr got played by Jefferson in this song, I think.
Hamilton's dismissal, that Lafayette is a smart man and he'll be fine, makes me smirk every time. As a French Revolution and Napoleonic Era fangirl, I can tell you flat out, the one thing that unites everyone in 1790s France is that _none_ of them have anything nice to say about Lafayette; he almost got the chop multiple times for being too moderate and loyal to the Crown, and the rest of the aristocracy saw him as a traitor for siding too much with the revolutionaries. I consider it sheer good luck on his part that he didn't die during the Terror. His grave in France is guarded by US Marines, because his adoped country loves him more than the country of his birth ever will. (Fun fact though, he holds not just dual citizenship in France and the US, but double US citizenship, because he became a naturalized citizen while he was alive and then was granted a second honourary citizenship by Congress in 2002. He's 100% French and 200% American. Additional fun fact: he named his son after Washington. The poor kid was stuck with the handle Georges Washington Louis Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette.)
I'm gona combine two of my comments from your previous videos here, just in hopes it might catch your eyes :3 It's only a tiny bit away, but their is a cut song between the songs "Rainolds Pamphlet" and "Burn". It's called "Congratulations" and is REALLY good. It's sung by Angelica. Just thought I'd pitch that to you, in case you want to include it in the reaction or use it for a Hamilton Bonus Day! (Also, the animatics for "Congratulations" are awesome.) There is also an alternate version of "Schuylor Defeated" that got cut, as well as another cut song called "Dear Theodosia: reprise". The original version of Schuylor Defeated has some more lines between Eliza and Philip, as well as an extra interaction between Eliza and Burr. It also gives information that leads into the other cut song, Dear Theodosia: reprise, which itselfe gives context for a verry important line and Burrs actions close to the end of the musical. (There is a great animatic of the original "Schuylot Defeated" that got made by MushiiR, and uploaded by Hamilton Trash. There are also great animatics for "Dear Theodosia: Reprise".) Those two might be something nice for a Hamilton Bonus Day! ^^
Very late comment, but that Jefferson line in Washington On Your Side. That section was written AFTER the musical was done. Lin last second realized he didn't have a standout moment for Jefferson so he added those 4 bars and rearranged who sang which part then officially finalized the product
A few days ago the TH-cam channel Stage released the first song to the German version of Hamilton, that starts in the fall. It sounds really nice and I would love for you to react to it 😉
"He's really accumulating a lot of enemies at this point, and it's kind of surprising." This is a man who got himself shot that you're talking about. I'm honestly shocked he had anybody that called him a friend before his death, as he seems to be the type of person that views people as disposable, only keeping them until they do something for themselves for once instead of only focusing on him. I mean, in Act Two, "Cabinet Battle 2" is the only time where Lafayette's name is brought up, and there's no mention of Hercules Mulligan. I exclude John Laurens solely because he was more than a friend.
All the actors who played double rolls had characters which were quite distinct and different from each other. I don’t think Lafayette and Jefferson are as different as Hercules Mulligan is to James Madison. They’re both spectacular.
"He flipped the most from Act 1 to Act 2." I mean, Act 1 he played an immigrant who barely spoke English and befriended Hamilton then rose to the level of being vital for the American victory and in Act Two, he plays a silver spoon slave owner whose ego rivals Hamilton's, so yeah, major flip.
So, after One Last Time, the next few songs honestly cascade one after the other. I Know Him, Adam's Administration and We Know can all be a video, then Hurricane and Reynold's Pamphlet as another, though you can split it how you want.
Daddy's calling Also Washington on your side was my favorite song to "speed up" AKA try and see how fast I could recite it before it turned to gibberish.
The bullet is played by an actress named ariana Debose. She is the one with the puff of hair on the front top of her head. There is a great video from the channel flicks and the city that explains all of the ways the bullet was subtly foreshadowing people's deaths. I would recommend watching it after you finish the show so that you aren't spoiled
My only criticism of the musical is its portrayal of Wasington and Jefferson as angels and good men when they both owned huge amounts of slaves and tortured them, other than that the musical is so so good
I like to think that Hamilton went all out in this Cabinet Battle because he knew that he didn't need all the members of the Cabinet to agree with him. He could go crazy with his opinions and Washington would still side with him because he's a daddy's boy.
I always find it funny, that in Cabinet Battle 1, where the topic is financial stuff, Hamilton´s secretary subject, he loses. And now in Cabinet Battle 2, which is about State affairs, so Jefferson´s field, he loses. WHY ARE THEY FAILING IN THEIR OWN TOPICS xD
If you haven’t yet, or after you’re done with this watch, look up “Hamilton White House” and see Lin do the original concept of the first song from what was supposed to be a mixed tape at the White House Poetry Jam. Also, all the vids of the cast performing bits from the musical at the White House.
Not gonna lie, I kinda like the mohawk. Anyway, good to see you all again for a glorious Hamilton day. I hope I came across as pumped in the vid as I wanted to. Take care, subscribe if you're new, and have an AWESOME Hamilton day!
You should check out the seminal tragedy by extra credits
The next song is my absolute favorite!! 😍
I won't lie I love the mohawk!
Question: if the challenge is met, would the cosplay go with the song? Or might you cosplay one character but sing a song from another?
Next you need to group up one last time and we know
I love the “daddy’s calling” insult as we all know how Hamilton reacted when Washington called him son

i would very very highly recommend watching Hurricane, The Reynolds Pamphlet, and Burn all together. they’re widely regarded as a trio of songs
You're super right! Like it almost felt like he forgot it here lol. I'll have to check out the official when I can just to see how he did it there
I recommend after watching One Last time that you watch them perform that same song at the White House. So freaking good.
I like how Daveed played this scene - he's playing around and making fun of Alexander in battle 1 but helping France was something Jefferson REALLY cared about and you can see the anger he has in this scene, especially after Washington rules against him.
"He's the protag! I assumed he would be universally beloved." The first song outright mentions him getting himself shot. 😂
My favorite flip is Eliza's dad in Act 1 becomes Mariah Reynold's sleazebag hubby in Act 2. So many shades of wrong.
@@emilybennett6567 and he's also the doctor who attends to Philip Hamilton iirc
He's there in every major event of Alex and Eliza's relationship
Glad to see recognition for Washington by your side, it's underrated ngl
One of the lines I sing the most in random situations is “It must be nice, it must be niiiice”
I love the audience reaction of "Oooh!" at the 'daddy's calling'
A protagonist is who we follow on the story, the central focus of a play/book. Not necessarily beloved by everyone, that's a bad writing sign, Mary sue or Gary stu
18:05 no that's not the bullet, it's a different member of the ensemble
5:02 and 13:21 I came back to rewatch this because of these two moments and your reactions, especially jokingly predicting "Madison gonna break it down?" and then seeing a joke prediction actually happen. 😂
And thus, "I'm in the Cabinet" was born.
The chorus always reminds me of "Nationwide is on your side."
Enjoy “One Last Time!” I love that one.
Hamilton days are the best days! Thank you! Can't wait for One Last Time!
Im going to see this LIVE TOMORROW!!! (Tomorrow by the time you read this lol) Im so excited 🤩
Oh man! I’ve been watching your videos and had no idea where you were from….until my sister went to a minor league baseball game today and posted videos of my nephew on the field with a blow up guitar in some contest. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW…there you are with your Mohawk. Crazy small world.
That's hilarious! I think you may be the first person who has connected the dots but yes! That was me and your nephew was a rock star!
Looking forward to the rest of Act 2!
I can't wait for the Reynolds pamphet
Lin wrote each characters raps in a unique style to them based on current rappers (Andre 3000, Dr Dre, etc)
Yeah, you should be nervous. Act 2 is an emotional rollercoaster
Yay, I’ve been waiting for this one!!! Whoop whoop!!!!
Yep the next song is AMAZING!!!
I'm really enjoying your Hamilton day! 👍🏾
Ariana DeBose is The Bullet. She hosted the Tonys this year, too.
⚠️!!!!SPOILER!!!!⚠️
I have no idea if your up to some of this, so I'm putting a spoiler warning!
“That’s the line of the whole musical…”
Wait ‘till you get to “We know.” 🙂
Awesome videos so far, One of my favourite things about this song, is have you noticed that Jefferson won't turn his back to Burr unless Madison is around? Then starts manipulating Burr, you can tell because he does the Marionette Dance behind Burr, similar to what Burr is doing in the "Room Where it Happens", he points Burr to Madison to "make sure he knows the plan, so Jefferson isn't involved." Burr got played by Jefferson in this song, I think.
Yay finally! I have been anxiously waiting! ❤️
"It seems like his plan is coming into motion, ableit a little bit slowly." His plan was to Wait For It. 🤣
"motherfucking" was cut from the movie to make it PG-13. It was in the actual play and on the cast recording.
I'm gona combine two of my comments from your previous videos here, just in hopes it might catch your eyes :3
It's only a tiny bit away, but their is a cut song between the songs "Rainolds Pamphlet" and "Burn". It's called "Congratulations" and is REALLY good. It's sung by Angelica.
Just thought I'd pitch that to you, in case you want to include it in the reaction or use it for a Hamilton Bonus Day! (Also, the animatics for "Congratulations" are awesome.)
There is also an alternate version of "Schuylor Defeated" that got cut, as well as another cut song called "Dear Theodosia: reprise".
Daveed Diggs is awesome, but no way -- Okieriete Onaodowan flipped the most between Act I and Act II, from Hercules Mulligan to James Madison!
It sounds really nice and I would love for you to react to it 😉
You should make a tier list of the songs when ur done
The Bullet has been dancing in the background but the person that you thought was The Bullet isn't her.
Imma vibe to the music now
Alexander never had a hard time telling someone to slow down if what they were striving for didn't benefit him or was inconvenient to him.
Omg I waited for this
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO ONE LAST TIME WITH I KNOW HIM. IT HELPS THE REST OF ACT TWO TO LINE UP NICELY AND IT'S A FUN LITTLE WIND DOWN AND THEN SET UP
I have that shirt!! Strange planet FTW
Disney plus/FCC has rules about swearing to keep its rating
I was waiting for your video 💐💖 no pun intended lol
Madison is more reserved. He’s a quiet, calculating strategist (an intelligent one).
Daddy's calling
Also Washington on your side was my favorite song to "speed up" AKA try and see how fast I could recite it before it turned to gibberish.
My only criticism of the musical is its portrayal of Wasington and Jefferson as angels and good men when they both owned huge amounts of slaves and tortured them, other than that the musical is so so good
Jefferson is not shown here as an angel, maybe not as flawed as he was in reality, but he's one of the main antagonists.
I like to think that Hamilton went all out in this Cabinet Battle because he knew that he didn't need all the members of the Cabinet to agree with him. He could go crazy with his opinions and Washington would still side with him because he's a daddy's boy.
washington on your side is probably one of my favorite songs LMAO
I always find it funny, that in Cabinet Battle 1, where the topic is financial stuff, Hamilton´s secretary subject, he loses. And now in Cabinet Battle 2, which is about State affairs, so Jefferson´s field, he loses. WHY ARE THEY FAILING IN THEIR OWN TOPICS xD
The "He knows nothing of loyalty" line really get reinforced when he decides to abandon all loyalty to his own values in 1800.
if you like THAT line, you should hear Weird Al sing it 3x faster in Hamilton Polka XD
Now i kinda think that Madison and Jefferson are Hamilton and Burr if they teamed up.
If you haven’t yet, or after you’re done with this watch, look up “Hamilton White House” and see Lin do the original concept of the first song from what was supposed to be a mixed tape at the White House Poetry Jam. Also, all the vids of the cast performing bits from the musical at the White House.
