    You’re looking for screenwriter tricks but this show traffics in much more mundane, and thus universal, truths like self-interest, ambition, laziness, incompetence, inertia and resistance to change. Most of all that people are trapped in systems that pose obstacles they cannot surmount even with the best intentions.

    Hi Guys! I really wish I could've put the entire scene with Bubs at the meeting. Seeing his character resonate with the speaker was really nice to see. Hope you guys have a good day!

    • @thegrimner
      @thegrimner 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Still haven't watched it, obviously, just pointing out, the actor playing the speaker is a singer songwriter named Steve Earle who is a friend of the showrunners and who has a very deep and personal history with drug abuse himself, being a recovering addict. What he's saying in the meeting is actually drawn from real life experience. First of many insances where the show will inject a bit of reality.

    It remains the biggest crime in the series that Andre Royo didn't get every acting award there is for his job portraying Bubs. Heart-wrenching seeing him struggle with his addiction. ...Oh, and minor point: they're not saying "knockos," they're saying "narcos." Apparently the closed-captioning crew could use some help from Prez.

      I find Jay to be one of the most interesting characters in the whole show. Is he a company man? Real police? His interaction with Santangelo this episode adds some layers.

    11:34 It would be worthwhile to bear in mind Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." Some cops just aren't good at their job as we saw in this episode with Santangelo.

    The writing is great but the actor/Musician who had the 12 step speech probably wrote a lot of it himself. Not sure if you saw the tattoo on his arm but that's Steve Earle the multiple Grammy winning musician of Copperhead Road fame. Also well known as a reformed heroin addict and he also lost his son/fellow musician 2 years ago to heroin. He also plays the theme song for the final season. There's some other great musicians in the series including Method Man from The Wu Tang Clan. Great work on the Reaction vids!

    Like you've mentioned, a lot of characters are based off of real ones, or otherwise the show writers used their own personal experience, but some characters also draw from their own life as well. Waylon, one of the guys speaking at the drug meeting Bubs and "Mr Green" attend, the one who said he's lost a good wife, bad girlfriend, etc, is country/rock/folk singer & songwriter Steve Earle. Married 7 times, and to the same woman twice through this, with 4 kids from 4 different mothers, he had to deal with heroin addiction problems a few years before this show, so there's very little 'acting' on his part when his character is involved in a scene. That's what makes them all appear so real, so genuine.

    I think that's a good ESL rule cause most people know what you're talking about. Some people will get pedantic but there's only few times where it ever really matters.
    The thing that always gets me about Kima's saying "that's it" to a guilty plea and drug court is she has no idea how much that would affect someone's life and ability to right themselves. She's only been on the side that doles it out. Similar thing happens with Daniels' words to the kid. He can't even get his department to give him proper guidance, what material support can he offer this kid that he pretty much helped enable not getting proper recompense. He can't move him out of the neighborhood, give him money. Just guilt-laden words.
    There's a lot in this episode to show how calloused they are to the people they interact with everyday, capped with that beating scene.

    • @janandduke4216
      @janandduke4216  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree!! While editing and rewatching the interaction with Daniels I couldn’t help but think he and the department were a part of the problem and his actions were out of guilt. Thank you for watching 😊

      @@janandduke4216 oh a huge part of the series is about how the drug problem isn't just on drug dealers and abusers, but law enforcement, the education system, and politics.
