Viking House with Grass Roof: Full Bushcraft Shelter Build with Hand Tools

- Building a grass roof bushcraft viking house with hand tools. We build an icelandic - style turf roof viking shelter using simple bushcraft tools and natural materials from the forest. The tiny house is build using traditional hand tools, such as drawknife, auger, axe and saw. We built the timber frame from scots pine, making mortise and tenon joints and burning the ends of the logs that go in the ground. This is an ancient technique used by our ancestors, it helps to prevent the wood rotting by driving out bugs and forming a protective layer. To support the turf on the roof of the viking home, we used hazel hurdles. These are simply green hazel sticks woven together. When they dry they set hard and form a solid structure. We also built the perimiter wall of the bushcraft shelter using this woven stick method. This viking house was inspired by the vikings of iceland. Where trees were used in building regularly, they soon became scarce and so they had to improvise. Iceland has good quality sod, and plenty of stone. And so they built a large stone foundation and then used layers of sod and turf to insulate their homes from the strong atlantic storms. We had no stone in this woodland, but the overall style of the structure was inspired by these resourceful tribes. Thank you for watching.

I was just about to do the first overnighter in this and then the lockdown came into effect! In the meantime here is the full build, I hope to get out and do an overnighter in this soon after the lockdown gets lifted! I hope you are all keeping safe. Cheers for watching
Hey Mike do u remember me?
I Have a question for you,
how long does it take y'all to build a cabin like that?? y'all have a great day God bless
thank you for the top class content mike... i fell around the floor crying with laughter when jack's stole your dad's hat through the roof... thank you both.. you are a little ray of light in these dark time's... so thank you and keep them coming.... stay safe out there!!!!!...
You stay safe too buddy.. All the best to you, your dad and your family nd friends.. Scary times.. Thanks for the entertainment.. especially during this lockdown.. can’t wait to see the next build aswell as what happens inside the bunker 😯
You use twigs fer walls and logs fer a bed? Sum of Them twigs tied together like a raft would be springy and more comfortable . Use them logs to keep tha fire going cause I think its gonna be a long cold nite Cl;-(p)
My 5 year granddaughter was very touched when you moved the little tree! Kudos to you for making her happy!
Beautiful
Ok
Aww. Also pretty cool you are watching this video with your 5 year old granddaughter
Yeah. So cool! He cut a hundred other trees to save a little one
Better watch that she doesn't become a victim of the 'green ideology' though Ma'am. They are pushing it upon the children from every angle.
You... planted a tree. Thank you so for caring enough to rehome it. You've earned my respect
He can also use it in the future. Beech is edible when used properly and can be pressed for oil. By moving it to the sun and rain he insures a future resource, plus, saves a tree.

I’m all for using the landscape to create homesteads, but you always have to give back what you take

These are designed to be satisfying, and it sure works for me. Sure, they're educational, but they're relaxing, satisfying. Every board fits, no nails bend, all logs are straight, all is cozy and warm. Their videos give an hour's escape away from frustration. Some people watch pimple popping, some watch chiropractors, I get relief from these guys. Absolutely love them.
And these videos are very time consuming, labor intensive just to film.
There is something so soothing about watching TA build stuff. I could watch these videos all day.
That fire building around the 49 minute mark is epic. Thank you for sharing.
The no talking and focus on sound and great editing for a full sensory experience is pure genius. Wouldn't be the same if some bearded dude was yammering on about what he was doing. Really special work.
I will say I like the Townsends build videos where they explain the processes they went through in learning how to do things, but that doesn’t negate the fact this format works beautifully for these videos.
Oh my gosh when the dog stole the hat I about peed laughing. What a perfect lil example of a jack Russell. Absolute precious chaos gremlins lol
Everyone talks about the build
But no one talks about how good that chilli looked
As I feel out of shape and old for 35, parked in a chair at my desk job all day, your dad carrying those big logs is a punch in my face for me to wake up!
My pops passed away December 14th, and we spent MANY days in the wilderness together...bless you both.
As a longtime Viking Metal fan, I am touched. This vid was awesome.
You guys are going to end up with a whole village before you're through, LOL.
@Chị Xinh Vlogs Hvorfor fanden vil du ha bannet den Viet Nam? Chua kan du sku selv gøre!
Y'all should rent them out, for the show the Vikings!
@@ryantumey8236 I’m here to learn how to build them on my land 👌
I'd volunteer to live there...every day of the week
Thanks for this today. It’s lifting my spirits. Was so thrilled to get the notification that you uploaded a new vid. Cheers from BC Canada.
Jefrey Koenig thanks for watching!
that's what i want to say too
moving that lil tree to a better place was probably one of the most wholesome things i have ever seen
These Guys are awesome. They don't only build Incredible wooden Houses, nope. They also plant young Trees in a better spot. Respect sir.
I can't wait to get out and finish our roundhouse mate
BUSHCRAFT TOOLS me neither mate!!
Watched a dw documentary recently about the Hong Kong protests. Was surprised to find you there
Watched a dw documentary recently about the Hong Kong protests. Was surprised to find you there
👍👌👏 Uuuuh, how I love these kind of videos! No distracting talking at all. Only the pure sounds of nature, working and the fire. That's enough for me. Very well done, Sirs!
Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.
Postscriptum: I love this dog! 💚
I think about grass roof shelters quite often. It is such ancient technology that could be so beneficial. Some places can't have grass yards, but a grass roof could be very nice in the cities.
Yes that would be amazing. I once lived in a building that had a walled in flat roof top garden with grass, posted plants, shrubs and even some big potted trees. It was for us residents to use. Had some garden tables, umbrellas and chairs too.
Build in Barbecue etc.
This was in the middle of a big city. Was really great.
I wish me and my dad did things together ...can't replace those memories
Please understand that this is no offense, but I love the silent videos. Just the building and working. It is not that I do not want to her you talk, I enjoy this in other videos very much, but this is sooo soothing. I calms me down like nothing else. Keep the good stuff coming and belatet congrulations on your child, I will be a father too, in just a few months. I wish you and your family nothing but the best. (Sorry for poor grammar, I am a german and our school english is just ridiculously terrible :D )
Your videos are therapeutics. I love how you explore the silence, sound of the forrest, weapons, fire and cooking.
Cheers from Brazil.
Great timing guys! Thanks for giving me something new to watch. Hope everyone is staying safe and sane.
VERY GOOD AND INTERESTING WORK full of thanks from FR
I'm a graphic artist working on assets for a game that covers this exact kind of construction and watching you do this has been far more useful than any of the other resources I've managed to acquire on the topic.
What’s the game!?
Piedra, barro, madera, fibras naturales, agua, todo está en estos lugares magicos, el tiempo se detiene cuando se vive en armonía, con la vida del bosque
Sadly I can only give one like :/. That's the content youtube WAS made for. Relaxing, entertaining, no BS. Greeting to your dad and to you from germany.
I am 80 years so the house would take a month or two and would be alone doing so. Will be watching the video a few more times to sub some parts with canvas, or branch weaving. Very good video. Thank you and may the wind be at your back.
Hi, I have watched you and your dads channels now for a long time. With the long days here for a while there has been nothing better than to re watch them again. So enjoyable, Thank you to you both. Best wishes to you and your family. Stay well and safe, and hope to see more in the near future. 🙏😷👌👍
I could watch these videos all day, my dream is to start homesteading and take my son Into the Wilderness to live. After the riots, its clear safety is an issue
I wish I lived in such an area. I am surrounded by farms, with very little in the way of woodland. You are truly rich to have so much to work with. Perhaps some day I shall have a plot like this. And I hope to still be healthy enough to build like this when I do.
its so quite....wow...the sound of yal working is music...its such a tranquility environment.. i love it.
Chilli Con Carne....finest food on the planet, best dish ever, and eaten outdoors it tastes even better.
39 people don't know awesome when they see it. If you don't like it, move on. I'm glad this channel exists, it's teaching heaps of people how to build stuff using traditional methods. Keep up the great work!
Первый раз вижу такой грамотный ролик без лишних слов, только дело, молодцы мужики, побольше таких в жизни,а то сплошные разговоры!)!)!)
You can alwaya trust a Jack Russell to cause chaos 🐶 😄
Great build, thanks for sharing, I can see a whole village coming to life before long. There is something oddly satisfying about watching you work & hearing the sounds of nature, so relaxing & peaceful.
Food looked great, but I'm starving now, so a bacon & egg buttie mught be on the cards 😋.
Love when the camera breaks to the fire for a few seconds, allows time to just stop for a few moments...
videos like this are like relaxing ASMR videos that I watch to help me fall asleep
You have the ideal setting there for survival/bushcraft school, would make good videos too.stay safe safe you and your family with this ongoing crisis we all face and keep up the video's for us all to enjoy
I love the sounds of nature and you sir have a fantastic microphone/camera set up.
Also, thank you for continuing to shoot videos for us during this pandemic, I really enjoy them.
Stay safe 👍🏼
Yesssss !! Here in North America/Canada we use "Charring" metheod for preserving almost everything structural related and made with wood !!! :D
Your building skills have improved since a couple of years couse looking back and seeing from where you started really leaves a lot to wish for.
Thank's for your video, It's very interisting for sorts différents wood, i learn à lot, with you. Thank's very much. Anne (whith an E,!!) 82 from France (Tarn et Garonne).
I love your videos. I want to do camping like this where I make shelters. Very relaxing to watch and informative, and overall entertaining. Also, the part with your dog was so funny when he stole your dad's hat.
How are you and family doing Mike in lock down? Even here at the ends of the earth in New Zealand we are in full lock down 2 and a half weeks nearly. Sending best wishes to you all who read this, stay home, stay safe
What's up Mike? You and your dad is amazing. First of all, I like how you two get along, joke around, and generally have fun. I see the modified saw horse from the first build after you guys took the whole thing down. To think you got all that done with the left over lumber from the first build. Anyway, enough of me running my mouth. I'm going back to the video. Nice job you guys. Peace!!!!
So I have a confession! It’s awkwardly satisfying watching you guys do this without talking to the camera
I got into bushcrafting since a year ago, right now I have to deal with some health issues that prevent me from going out in the woods, but man the itch is real. Thanks for these videos, great techniques, great editing, thanks for what you do!
This is sort of like watching grass grow but mesmerizing. How many times can you watch them dig holes, saw, chop, make a fire, heat a kettle, etc? But I watched it all and rather enjoyed it.
Thanks for sharing. Probably great father-son bonding.
When industrial society collapses, such skills will be in high demand among those seeking to escape the fallout.
If an asteroid ever took out all of human civilization this guy and the dude from Primitive Technology could have it back up and running within the week.
It wont work. They need an woman to
Hopefully it’ll go a little differently the second time around
Watching this one for a second time because it’s HOT here in Phoenix (it’s monsoon season here so it’s 100*f and 60+% humidity) and visions of rainy deciduous forests help cool me off :-). Phoenix is a pretty desert, but it is still a desert and I was raised in SW Ohio, much the same environment you’re in. Miss the Autumn colors and coolness.
Your welcome, and thank 4 sharing this awesome building,,,,👍😊◀️
I guess there is not much you can do with the quarantine as far as getting out and making new episodes. But always enjoy your videos even when I see them as a repeat.
You know, one of my favorite moments in this one was Jax on top of the house! You know, you REALLY need to set up a TH-cam channel for him...something like "Bushcraft Adventures With Humans" or such. I would be a real hit...especially with young people.
The way things are going thats what we will all be living in before long.
Much better than the city!
Think of what you'll save on your power bill! LOL
bruv did you go back in time to Viking days and learned all the stuff they had been doing? wow, you are a Genius and innovative man of the modern days! and this is the best thing I've seen in my life father and son bonds!! cheers mate!!! I'd like to take a film or a show on you and your works mate!!!
In both types of houses shown here, they would put small bundles of straw on the floor to keep it warm and to keep them off of the ground. They show it in the documentary series Secrets of the Castle. Historian Ruth Goodman had an idea about how they would lay it out around the fire, and how the smoke from the fire indoors would kill bugs in the roof.
Been going a bit bonkers here. TOO much time on my hands.. thanks for posting. It's the next best thing to being out in nature.
I learn how to build😄😄thanks you very much for full video now i can build something
Good pm watching from philippines stay safe God bless
Once you can go back to the camp DEFINITELY give us an update on the little sapling you replanted! It should have grown quite a bit by then 😁
simple and very good. I love it when you don't talk too much. great video
That turned out so good! Y’all inspired me to start up my channel again. I hope get to your level of building stuff like this someday. Kinda stuck in my house for now during these crazy times, but still trying to get some content on my channel in the meantime. Keep up the great videos! Cheers from Wyoming!
I am watching the building process and wondering how they built the side pallets or walls with small limbs. Neatly done. This is awesome.
It's show in another video, but basically drill some holes in a log, evenly space, stick the uprights in it, and weave the slats through them. It's called a wattle, as in wattle and daub, the daube being the mud mixture stuck to it. It's an ancient way of making walls.
At first, I was like 'ohh dude you're cutting live trees', but when I saw the background ; 'oh gosh, the forest is too dense, cut more trees to provide more sunlight to its bottom'
Soo creepy..
Love your vids as always.
I am sure, this will turn into a very good, heavy duty viking house.
Oh Subs, that forest isn't dense...lol But I agree, thinning out isn't hurting it at all. You should see the woods around our place. Walk ten feet into the trees surrounding our "yard", (3 or so acres we have cleared) and it's like going from day to dusk...lol
If my memory serves me right he doesn't cut live trees because the woods he is in has a lot of dead standing.
Oh by the way your dad is a machine ! A complete superhero. Good onya mate!
Thanks for the video Mike, really like those woven walls, loved the whole build really, your Dad is awesome, so is Jacks, sweet cooking setup you have there, need to get some of those, best to you and your family, stay safe and God Bless ❤️
don't know you might not see this but I really love your videos and you inspire me a lot to do this
I really loved your video. Specialy the conbination of cooking and working. The nature and the silence during the video produces a lot of peace. Wonderful. Great job.
Belgian bushcrater here,
To everyone that read this, stay safe.
Wash your hands and respect the distance.
I love watching your videos. I send them to all my buddies. You've given me some great ideas
I love the ecological responsibility of moving that beech tree. One day, you'll be able to sit under its' shade!
you fellows are just amazing. I could live there. Great job !!
Sorry I haven't watched you guys in a while. I'm glad you are all are doing good.
This was nice to watch and remember another epic build. Jaxx on the roof, awesome. 👍
At about 38 mins 55secs you went to grab a hot log of the fire with bare hands me and the missis watched it 3 times and laughed so much great videos keep up the good work
Thank you🙏😍
Welcome to Thailand 💛🇹🇭💛
NGL.. the best part was the dog taking off his hat! on a real note I think I found my new fav channel to watch at work! keep it up guys.
Hope you two and your families are safe and happy! What a wonderful job you guys are doing!! Greetings from Perth Ontario Canada!
My cat usually historically only liked videos of birds and mice and she watches tennis with my grandma (she likes watching the ball. Her new strange obsession is watching your videos with me. I had no idea something like this would be stimulating to a cat.
great videos . thanx for sharing . i can watch them for hours , so relaxing
Educational and enjoyable. I always wondered how this would be done. I especially like the use of hand tools rather than power tools.
Extremely likeable! Thanks for this.
love these vids.... the builds.. the sounds and no talking... awesome
Love seeing all of the wprk condensed into one video. Y'all did a great job. Can't wait to see more awesome bushcraft content!!! 👍👍

Thank you TA Outdoors, Another epic film!
I hope you keep the great filming up, I love how you film practically everything going on in the time you are out in the Woods... It is a great appetizer to see Bon Fire Foodmaking before having to cook ourselves here in our homes around Europa!
@Ta outdoors .. is it possible for you to name the Brand - Model or Link to it, the Fire-Foodmaking equipment with the large metal overhanger ?
I would love to see what other bushcraft, more in the interior of the house, how can it can be more modern and more cool things that can be done indoors
I love your videos and buildings but especially I love the sounds. The wonderful sounds of nature 😍
With the way the World is now-a- days this was very interesting ❤️
The fact grass is growing out of the thatching is awesome!! Great content man!!
