At least the speech in Akhaten and the music was pretty great in isolation. The rest of the episode is forgettable though. Plus literally everything up to the new paradigm daleks was great in Victory of the Daleks.

i always found it funny that it felt that they were teasing a big story for the paradigm daleks, apart from the design which i remember even as a kid at the time comparing them to the power rangers but then nothing happened. There was that one in "the big bang" and they made a cameo in the pandorica opens but come on. Daleks more power and stronger than ever

@@alexmaclellan5631 Literally the only other time they reappear, it's in the Oswin Oswald episode, where literally JUST the original ones appear amongst hundreds of the normal Daleks. Like, why would they not pump out more daleks if they're so much better? And also, would the new paradigm daleks not kill the goldeny bronze daleks, considering them inferior? THEY DO THAT TO OTHER DALEKS WHICH ARE JUST THE GOLDENY BRONZE DALEKS IN DISGUISE, IN VICTORY OF THE DALEKS!

Oh got, I never noticed his lack of eyebrows. :D I'll never be able to unsee that. Tha being said, I liked Matt Smith. Even though his time as the Doctor has the least amount of episodes that I really enjoy it's not his fault. He was actually really good at portraying the "weird old man trapped in a young man's body" part.

Hmm. You say "I could have taken an entire series of Trenzalore" and I wonder if that is one of the main issues people have with the episode. It tries to cram an entire season's worth of story/concept into one 60 minute episode.
I don't hate the episode, but I don't love it either and I suspect that's why - it had some cool ideas but ultimately felt superficial because none of it was really given enough time to resonate. I could probably take an entire season of just Smith talking to Handles... xD

Rebel Flesh & Almost People are brilliant imo. Loved them.
Smith is my favourite Doctor, he’s such a complex character, he’s kind, loving, has a child like mind but can switch in to an angry, vengeful man in an instant. It’s like he’s scared of his own rage because if he lets himself slip, he has no clue of what he could truly be capable of. Absolutely brilliant.

He's not complex! He didn't even have a character arc! And Tennant did the anger waaaaay better. Matt Smith always sounded like a dumb kid, or a crazy old man when he made speeches. Too shouty. Tennant spoke with real conviction.

Series 7 I just thought was pretty meh in my opinion, but mostly serviceable overall, personally I hated series 6 the most, despite having at least 2 of my favourite 11th doctor episodes (the doctors wife & the god complex) I hated most of the episodes, I Thought the series arc was overall badly executed (like all 11th doctor series arcs were) one of the episodes has the doctor befriend Henry Avery, one of the most infamous pirates in history, who was a MASS MURDERER and RAPIST (curse of the black spot, a good man goes to war) and the episode “let’s kill hitler” is in my opinion, THE WORST EPISODE in the shows history, muddling river songs backstory with such LAZY, INSUFFERABLE writing, showing little to no interest in exploring the historical setting of the episode, and FORCING a separate sub plot about INCOMPETENT time travelling justice... police???.... which honestly makes it feel like 2 episodes had been merged into one horrifically written mess!!!!

    • @TheseUseless
      @TheseUseless 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jasonpaulbaker1 Yeah, the overall consensus is that the season 6 arc was pretty poorly done, i mean, for starters it's overly complicated, or atleast it's trying to be, i think Moffat can be an INSANELY good writer, but he also tends to just make things up as he goes. As well as that, the ending makes no sense, it's literally just "The Doctor needs to die" *another person dies* "Good job" I mean, did the doctor really just outsmart time and space, and bypass a fixed point in time BY DRESSING UP?!

  • @TheArchieTheory

    Best:
    5. The Pandorica Opens - I'm counting two-part stories as two seperate episodes. This one is iconic, it's hard hitting, it's fun, and it's easily rewatchable.
    4. Time Of Angels - The atmosphere of this epsiode is Phenomenal. It's spooky, it's exciting, it's liminal, it's everything. River Song is also at her best in this episode. At the same time, a lot happens in this epsiode without it feeling overbloated. Amazing epsiode all around.
    3. Day Of The Doctor - What can I say that hasn't already been said?
    2. The God Complex - This one is an underrated gem. It is exciting, spooky, and more. The characters are easy to connect with, and while you are watching you get a sense of mystery and excitement throughout. It's so underrated!
    1. The Impossible Astronaut - This is possibly top 10 episodes in Doctor Who history, and I'm talking 1963 and up. This is amazing. The action is amazing, the romance is amazing, the mystery is amazing, and a beautiful showcase of my favorite Nu-Who Tardis team: River, 11, Amy, and Rory.
    Worst:
    5. The Wedding Of River Song - This really feels like Moffat has a bunch of different ideas for a finale, you he just crammed them all into one. This is the most overflowed episode since the Keys of Marinus, and that's not an overstatement.
    4. Let's Kill H*tler - A dumb concept with an even worse execution. They save Hitler's life, and then the writers forget that he was in this episode. Also, the idea of tiny humans controlling a life-sized human robot is so dumb. The stakes are also as low as they can possibly be, with floating octopus robots. They aslo ruined River, making her insanely annoying and unlikeable.
    3. The Power Of Three - I guess Doctor Who is an underdeveloped sitcom now. This episode just feels boring, and this is coming from somebody with a pretty good attention span. The worst part about this episode is the end, where The Doctor just waves around his Sonic and the day is saved. This episode also feels way to tryhard, with ultimately Forgettable speeches.
    2. Nightmare In Silver - This is the textbook example of what not to do in a Doctor Who episode. The rules are simple: Don't overstuff it, don't be to childish, don't be to dark, don't use unlikeable characters, and don't use stupid concepts. This one manages to break all of these rules, as it constantly goes back and Fourth on whether it should be a childish episode for little kids or a dark and depressing epsiode for older audiences. I might also sound like an NPC for this, but it should've been a two-parter.
    1. Dinosaurs On A Spaceship - It's as stupid as it sounds. This episode feels like it was made for genuine toddlers. With comic relief villians that won't shut up, and historical figures being there for litterly no reason, this episode is absolutely horrid.

The Crimson Horror is my favorite Gatiss episode. My main issue with Victory isn't the redesign but was the ending where he just thought really heart warming humany thoughts and was no longer a bomb as if that made any kind of sense. I know there have been similar plot elements in other episodes but this and Hide are love conquers all just not working. I liked that the daleks got away. I think The Time of the Doctor is horribly underrated. The only thing I'd change would be not bothering to call the town Christmas but that's just a nitpick. I would have preferred it as a multi part story but it's still a great episode.

i'm not sure if it's in my top five, but a nightmare in silver i always felt was a rather fantastic episode. it has flaws, but it's one of the few episodes for me where the cybermen actually felt bone-chillingly threatening. i felt like it paid omage to the scifi trope of the 'the horror of the unstoppable, exponential growth of technology' brilliantly as it always reminded me of the scifi concept that i'm perhaps most scared of: grey goo. tiny robots that spread out among the stars with to produce more tiny robots. never slowing, never faltering, just consuming galaxy after galaxy and turning the available resources into more of itself.
everything from cyber doctor (smith plays a great villain), to the cybers patching weaknesses on the fly, to the threat level being so high that the sacrifice of an entire planet for even one of them is justified. god it's just.. so good.

I'm so relieved you loved Matt Smith as much as I did. I stopped watching when he first arrived because I thought he was a ridiculous choice as Doctor Who. Way too young - he just didn't look the part. How wrong could I be? An old man inside a young man's body, he carries it off perfectly - his chemistry with EVERYONE especially Amy (and River) is second to none. Those three seasons are a bizarre combination of Matt's eccentric talent with Moffat's erratic writing. Moffat's strength became his Achilles heel for sure. The Silence, and Clara (or Oswin Oswald) in Asylum were the highlights for me, but the writer's absolute failure was his inability to solve the incredible breathtaking mysteries he'd created and his failure to kill off characters once and for all. In the end I'd have to record every episode because each plot was so convoluted I had to rewatch a few times to try and work out what the hell was going on (didn't you get the feeling he was over it by season 7? Murdering weeping angels???). My children are watching these three seasons for the second time and I find I still have to help them understand the Amy and Clara time streams. I'm not even convincing myself when I explain it. Well done on this review - can't believe the western and the shark Xmas story are there and no mention of Tom Baker in Day which made me cry inconsolably for an hour. In hindsight, his successor may be the greatest Doctor of all.

while I agree that his era was a mixed bag, ur also right about the fact that he nailed the 'old man who still acts like a child' bit. he was such a beautiful complex doctor, (some fans often try to limit him by labelling him as one thing and saying they don't like it, but he was very complex and possessed a lot of many aspects to his personality). also, he was kind and endearing, but wasn't PC, which I liked. but then, he could be angry, bitter, but he could change his persona at the drop of a hat. and I like that he tried to keep things light. He's one of my favorites. Smith played him to perfection. but, I admit that I like Rings of Ahkaten and Rebel Flesh/Almost People--a lot. I also really enjoy Crimson Horror. it's so beautifully weird and I thought the paternoster gang was amusing. I also like characters being witty sometimes. I know people believe that his female characters don't feel real, but b4 moffat took over, the first two years of new doctor who felt very soap opera-esque and there was such an overabundance of drama that got me down eventually. i love series 3, but the doctor caused drama himself. that may be a concept of 'real', but sometimes, I like to get away from reality. sometimes, moffat's characterization helped me get away and kind of live in a fantasy. still, great video!

The only episodes I dislike of 11s run was the entirety of Series 7 Part 2, besides Name of The Doctor which was great. Honestly, everything else, YES, including s6 finale was either brilliant, enjoyable filler or just perfect. The s6 finale, I thought it was brilliant in how it wrapped everything up but also opened new doors regarding new questions “Doctor... Who?”. My favourite about s6 is the plot development and build up. Similar with s5. s7 was good for the first half but ignore the second beside the finale and all’s good.

I watched this episode before watching most of this era but I thought Rings of Ahkaten looked awesome and Town Called Mercy did not seem interested. I still think The Doctors speech in the Rings of Ahkaten was one of the best Matt Smith moments in Doctor Who but it is ruined by Clara stepping in and undermining not just The 11th Doctor but The Doctor in general. Town Called Mercy is so powerful. Handling the idea of making up for past mistakes in such a unique and touching manner

With them all being unique in their own ways, it’d be quite extraordinary to see one die too, because there’s only 5. Then after several sequels, we have one left...

Amazing episodes like Vincent and the Doctor and Amy's Choice are always forgotten but bad stories like A Good Man goes to War and Rings of Ahkaten are praised by most fans.
I think Matt Smith is so forgettable because you can't remember how good his seasons were, and i think Jodie's facing the same issue. Season 6, 7 and 11 are just so forgettable because it's filled with so much "Meh" that everyone just forgets the good parts.

I would say the paradigm Daleks weren’t bad. They were a refreshing take on the Daleks taking away the bronze and old looking design for some newer colorful ones. Also I think it’s funny how some people forget that the Daleks were actually colored in the classic series and they immediately conclude that when New Who does it, it has to be a cheap marketing scheme. Also what a lot of people including DAVIS don’t want to mention is that the paradigm Daleks were brought back after this, specifically in the episode “Asylum of the Daleks.” But SCREW FACTS I just wanna complain, right?? But the suicide/depression thing is mainly only from a play/book about him years later.. It was great for the bittersweet story but It isn't historically accurate haha
He didn't kill himself, he was shot by a local hooligan that had been messing with him, but knew his brother and didn't want him getting in trouble, so he lied about what happened
He was shot in the side and had just been out painting

I quite liked The Rebel Flesh two-parter. Yeah, it's basically a retread of The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, but I liked that type of story and am happy to see it again. How many invading aliens stories have we seen on Doctor Who? It's nice to mix it up with some morally grey aliens sometimes Rebel Flesh is... fine. It has that pretty epic *two* twists leading into "A good man goes to war". And conceptually it's pretty cool - conveniently grown remote-access bodies developing their own sentience.
Personally I'd put The Power of Three (with it's great initial concept and terrible half-assed ending), The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone (with it's screwing up the awesomeness that is the Weeping Angels), Vampires of Venice (with its... vampire fish-people?) and the Curse of the Black Spot (with it's general mehness) below The Rebel Flesh.
