I've never thought I'd meet someone who agrees with me that the show is kind of worse off without the Time War. It was nice to have this huge, eldritch event, that feels like it's been brewing slowly, until it just exploded into the most spectacular, horrible extinction event, and now, we are left with a new timeline, a young timeline, where the creatures from classic Who are relegated to legends, and a broken hero, who is doomed to wander the universe, alone, the last of the time lords. I think that makes for a much more interesting background/world building for Doctor Who than just "Oh, there's a silly man, he has a box, he sometimes goes back to this planet of funny mathematicians with weird hats"

I thought the Nightmare Child was a giant war ship or ancient space being like Unicron from Transformers. I was disappointed it was just a Dalek variant.
Although I understand your disappointment that the Nightmare Child is a Dalek, it's pretty harsh to simply refer to it as "a Dalek" like it's just another random Dalek design. Far from that in fact, it's an eldritch abomination of a Dalek, possibly the most destructive Dalek in existence. A colossal, raging tsunami that devours everything, including thousands of fellow Daleks at a time. The Nightmare Child was Davros' attempt at creating "the perfect Dalek", and, in a twisted, morbid sense, succeeded.

Only the monstrous is one of my favourite Doctor who stories of all time, it just has so much get up and go, it really feels like we are finally looking at the time war through the Doctors eyes. I see this story like trial of a timelord (which I also love), in where there are little stories in one box set, but are all still the same story, unlike the big finish box set which are just 4 stories that may have something tying them together. You need to watch mind warp to understand terror of the vervoids and same can be said here.
You should invest some time into watching John Hurt's two portrayals of Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant and An Englishman in New York, one from the 70s the sequel was 2009. It is dazzling.
So I got Only the Good for my birthday and I was just a bit happy. Those stories were fantastically written and the sky man was probably taken a different way by me than others (new cybermen?)
@@SamyulDavis he looks a little like John Hurt especially as he's getting older. I've really enjoyed these and the Broke Canon series. Since this is the Time War as opposed to the War Doctor specifically, is it possible that it might be due for an update? Since we've gotten a lot more Time War from Big Finish (four Gallifrey sets that are really good, currently six War Master sets with at least two on the way, four Eighth Doctor sets, Susan's War which was really good, and two War Doctor begins sets), plus "The Clockwise War" from DWM, I'm cutious if there's enough to warrent re-examining the war. BadwolfGamer I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again; the BBC is missing out on not making Doctor Who movies. Just cause the 90s one didn’t sit well, doesn’t mean that it won’t nowadays. Hell, I’d argue that a Doctor Who movie would feel right at home during this age of cinema, and with the right budget, actors, writers, and more, I’m betting that it would be fantastic. The only negative is that John Hurt is no longer with us, so we probably won’t ever get our Time War epic on the big screen.
Colin Forever I would assume the money from merchandising alone should be enough for it. Probably not, I could be wrong. I’m just saying that one day, even if we’re all in our 80s, we’ll have the pleasure of hearing that familiar theme in a theater and going nuts over it
The Time War is far above anything in Star Wars. Its a Lovecraftian nightmare with time and space being mangled and ripped apart and reassembled into terrible, abominable things, tearing the universe asunder as the time lords and daleks injured reality even more with their doomsday weapons, weapons that could unmake the entire GFFA in a second. A Time War movie would ideally look nothing like star wars, and be impossible to visualise.
@@professordimension7176 we can still have Paul McGann as 8th for a while, he didnt immediately get involved he held off for years (?centuries) before breaking, so what broke him? I've just started myself, but think about this ALL the doctors, except 9th and 12th are in big finish now, from 4th onwards its the actual actors, just find your favourite doctor and start with them. And John Hurt, did do 4 stories before he passed away and 2 audios
I'm kinda baffled as to how beneath the viscoid got on here when it's on the same box set as the sky man and the heavenly paradigm. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but compared to those two? I'm very curious as to why you thought those stories were worse
No, I just genuinely don't rate The Sky Men like everybody else, and they're rather the two highpoints of that set. If I were doing it now I'd consider Master of Callous, but its so far removed from the war that it'd be hard to justify.

Wanna see a billion, billion Daleks crap themselves? Just watch the Day of the Doctor. Only the Doctor can halt the conquering of Gallifrey simply by showing up and shooting No More into a wall
Wait... if you said here that you think the show is worse off without the time war then why are you so pissed that Gallifrey has been destroyed again in series 12?
Just because it's worse off without, doesn't mean that it didn't have to get wrapped up. It was time to move on, and something identical has taken it's place and showed the audience how superficial arcs are in general.
I think it was a mistake to have the doctor save Gallifrey in day of the doctor during the last day of the time war. Maybe I'm wrong but since when has new who respected death n it's permanents all the guilt n emotion is pointless now knowing he save Gallifrey I just feel like time war has become less cause the doctor's save Gallifrey I just hate it who agrees or disagree I guess lol

Oh the war in heaven! Yeah that was literally the time war but the daleks weren't the main threat
What's the name of the track playing at 11:54??
John hurt was my childhood. He was the storyteller
Mess effect music? Nice.
Aye, Whatcha got against the Shalka Doctor?
He's got 2 stories at most, bro! :)
We need The Time War movies it would rival Star Wars it may even be better then Star Wars.
Especially now that Star Wars is weakened.
That could be a series ALL by itself and again McGann is still young enough, finding some one to replace John Hurt though, now THAT would be a challenge
I would love a new story where the current doctor meets a young war doctor
This opening music is superb, who wrote it? Where can I get it? I hope you can help.
That's the big finish war Master theme
Brilliant - and thank you, my expectations you'd reply were low, should have known better (apologies). You're a gent and the music is terrific.
I dunno why, but Only the Monstrous... didn't really impress me, I feel like I heard a different story than what you described.
First Acts of the Time War:
Genesis of the Daleks - The Time Lords send the Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry to prevent the Daleks' creation
Rememberance of the Daleks - The Doctor uses the Hand of Omega to destroy Skaro (supposedly)
The End of the Time War:
The Last Day - A single Dalek gets through to Gallifrey and a whole army follows
The End of Time - Rassilon tries to bring Gallifrey back to the universe from the end of the Time War
The Day of the Doctor - 13 Doctors save Gallifrey
*Note, this is all based on tv*
Remember when everyone said the time war was canon destroying and a terrible idea. Yeah me neither time war is the best canon addition ever
What’s the name of the music at the start?
I have been considering switching from the show to big finish for a while now. Only concern is that I’m joining 600 episodes in! It just feels better and more like the show I remember. Technology hasn’t blitzed my brain enough that I can’t imagine the images. Would be nice to have a definitive list as the big finish site is so confusing. Brit box....make it happen and I will sign up to you guys.
I've just started myself, but think about this ALL the doctors, except 9th and 12th are in big finish now, from 4th onwards its the actual actors, just find your favourite doctor and start with them. And John Hurt, did do 4 stories before he passed away and 2 audios
julie everett I noticed Spotify have a lot that are free to play. It can be confusing as it jumps around a lot. Some amazing stories there!
I'm kinda baffled as to how beneath the viscoid got on here when it's on the same box set as the sky man and the heavenly paradigm. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but compared to those two? I'm very curious as to why you thought those stories were worse
Maybe because Beneath the viscoid was free and so he hasn’t listened to the entire boxset
@@EditedAF987 ...I dont know why I didn't think of that
No, I just genuinely don't rate The Sky Men like everybody else, and they're rather the two highpoints of that set.
If I were doing it now I'd consider Master of Callous, but its so far removed from the war that it'd be hard to justify.
Best
5.the war doctor only the monstrous
4.day of the doctor
3.the war doctor agents of chaos
2.engines of war
1.the war master only the good
Worst
5.all hands on deck
4.a thing of guile
3.day of the vaskta nerada
2.in the garden of death
1.the conscript
What's the music at 15:30 actually called?
The war master theme
@@SamyulDavis thank you sir, shot right up to my favourite bit of doctor who music alongside whatever it was the played when they burned the boat in series 6 episode 1.
All of the Eighth Doctor Adventures about the War in Heaven, AKA what the Time War was cribbed from, are far superior to everything produced about the Time War as are the Faction Paradox audios
Wanna see a billion, billion Daleks crap themselves? Just watch the Day of the Doctor. Only the Doctor can halt the conquering of Gallifrey simply by showing up and shooting No More into a wall
They need to make a movie about the the great time war
Vasta narada is mcgann?
If you want a canon Time War, watch Batmanmarch's Doctor Who Action Figure Adventures
If you want "canon" Watch star trek not doctor who as I hear that they care more about it than any doctor who writer has ever done
i actually loved the conscript, i dont get the time war 1 hate
Engines Of War Is The Best it was absolutely amazing!!
Wait... if you said here that you think the show is worse off without the time war then why are you so pissed that Gallifrey has been destroyed again in series 12?
Just because it's worse off without, doesn't mean that it didn't have to get wrapped up. It was time to move on, and something identical has taken it's place and showed the audience how superficial arcs are in general.
DAVIS that’s fair enough. I was just wondering.
I think it was a mistake to have the doctor save Gallifrey in day of the doctor during the last day of the time war. Maybe I'm wrong but since when has new who respected death n it's permanents all the guilt n emotion is pointless now knowing he save Gallifrey I just feel like time war has become less cause the doctor's save Gallifrey I just hate it who agrees or disagree I guess lol
holy shit I own twelve angels weeping. never bothered reading it tho. do you think I should skip to third wise man?
I think that it's the greatest Who book. You can read them in whatever order you like, but I recommend the third wise man, ghost in the machine and the CIA detective story more than anything. They're amazing.
I don’t think of 2 and 3 only the monstrous are at all interesting
Also I thought the nightmare child in the third wise man was just there for fan service
And wasn’t written as any sort of interesting or unique concept at all
You're probably not wrong, but it was a snapshot story. Plus, that level of high-concept prose is downright impressive.
i dont see a difference between the war doctor and the rest of the doctors. he wasnt a time lord rambo. he was as anti war as 12
I know it was a mistake, but it ain't the Eleven, it's Twelve.
I think a Thing of Guile isn't THAT bad. It give's context to Evolution of the Daleks, with their attempt to regress back to their more humanoid form. I'm in the minority on this but I actually Liked Daleks in Manhatten and Evolution.
Same! But Daleks in Manhattan doesn't feel half-baked. It doesn't really feel like a companion piece to that TV story either, moreso just a very similar plot unfortunately running parallel
@@SamyulDavis i will say the Neverwhen had probably my favorite plot twist in the entire box set with the War Doctor on the battlefield as he realized just WHERE he was. My jaw fell open as the voices began changing
Yep, it's the only detail I really remember from that whole box and it's one of the best earned twists Who has ever done. Must relisten.
@@SamyulDavis crossing my fingers for the upcoming Big finish projects. Lovecraft Invasion looks amazing ( 6 and HP lovecraft mythos? YES!) and hopefully a boxset of 10 and Martha
I the War Doctor should have been the mysterious Other
@4:52 "The reason I'm writin'...is how to say "Chrichton" (Kry Ton). And not being a jerk, love your stuff immensely, but I too often mispronounced words I'd only read, so...you're welcome! :-)
Engines of war is so good
I just like Romana (II) too much for my own good 💀💀
Haha; The narrator doesnt even get the true enemy of the timewar correct.
The Daleks was NOT the "true" enemy of the timelords in the Timewar.
The Ragnarookians was.
as...They where the former rulers over time and that after Rassilon and his "teacher" trapped them in an Schrödinger like state of both being alive and ascended beings at the same time.
The Ragnarookians manipulated mankinds history so the Daleks came to be in the future and then pushed and gave them the timetravel tech.
We know this above thru Rassilons ascention device and how the Doctor transportewd away Gallifrey at the same moment.
= Thus trapping the rulers of time in an Schrödinger state of both being alive and ascended....
= in this new Universetimeline that was spawned into existance in episodes "Doomsday & Big Bang" (very well hidden in Doomsday") the Weeping Angels ARE the former rulers of time (the Timelords)
= the same as the Ragnarookians was in the classic series Universetimeline (seen 1963-2006: 2010. 2013: 2014.
Netflix give Paul McGann a series as the doctor please it will make me watch it lol sorry but I refuse to watch doctor who since series 10 ended.
I hate to be a pedant but it’s not Critch ton, it’s pronounced Cry ton
2:54 not true. Matt Smith and Richard English Grant are both bad actors and bad Doctors.
The dialogue seems to draggggggggggg on and on 😫🤮😫🤮 !?!?!?
My dude as a leftie (a bloody anarchist at that so yeah not all far left is beaucratic) itd be nice if I could just watch something geeky without having to hear what someone thinks about politics... Especially if you arent even going to give it deep analysis. What's more im sure people on the right feel the same way. Please just keep to the escapism
just going to say this, title is beyond misleading. It's basically 20 minutes of the OPs opinion, nothing else. Skip.
Garrett Hawkins
That’s what this entire video series is
Taking about the “Best and Worst”
Of the time war or any of the doctors hardly clickbait
No, I conducted research in a lab to find the objective best and worst pieces of subjective art
The majority seem to be able to process the concept of a review just fine. It's assumed.
I hate Doctor Who.
Fat Boy then why are you here?
@@AIRWOLF-l6g I genuinely don't remember putting that
