  • www.crosstraini... Our review of the 2023 Sherco 500SEF Factory! Three of us recently rode the Sherco 500SEF Factory for two days. I love a big bore thumper 500cc dirt bike for open tracks. You just ride in that meaty mid-range power and fly! So here is our 2023 Sherco review. These are 2022 models but the only change for 2023 is injected plastic molds. I love a big bore thumper for open tracks. You just ride in that meaty mid-range power on 500cc dirt bikes and fly! Into enduro riding? See all our dirt bike videos for dirt riding tips. This is the advantage of 500cc enduro engines. The 2023 Sherco 500SEF Factory is less snappy compared to their 450cc cousins. They don't rev so quickly. If you aren't racing, it's a great combination on the 2022 Sherco 500SEF Factory and 2023 model too. Let's start with the known issues. The 2023 Sherco 500SEF Factory is much better than my previous 'thumpers', but I would probably use a G2 Throttle Tamer to make it even smoother. For open tracks? These Shercos are from an Australian tour company, their entire fleet now has several thousand hours of engine time. Problems? The tour manager scratched his head and eventually said this 2023 Sherco 500SEF Factory radiator overflow pipe has a sharp curve and they are worried the rubber might eventually crack. No problem. But I would want to soften that throttle for gnarly terrain. Sherco ergonomics tend to suit short and mid-sized riders. The 500SEF is no exception. Apart from that, their Shercos have been flawless. I contacted the guy who helped to create our Sherco two-stroke known issues vid. He said the modern 2023 Sherco 500SEF four strokes are problem-free. Years ago, the early models were apparently a bit heavy. Some riders didn't like the weird ergonomics. And the engines were a bit under-powered. But it seems those days are long gone. What didn't I like with the 2022 Sherco 500SEF Factory? In the past, I did not like the snappy throttle response of big four-strokes with fuel injection. A steering stabiliser was fitted which raised the handlebars so I was quite comfortable. But I would probably add handlebar risers too to feel completely comfortable. Similar to my two-stroke Sherco, you can reduce the compression setting to zero which makes a big difference. Another tip for Shero owners is to remove 10cc of fork oil from each leg. I haven't tried this yet. But I am told this makes the Factory KYB suspension very plush. If you like bling, you will be happy with the Factory model. It's interesting to see that the 2022 Sherco 500SEF Factory models are so popular that Sherco is dropping some of the base Racing models. What did we like? It would be interesting to try an adventure conversion with the Sherco 500SEF. A big fuel tank. Comfy seat. Cush drive hub. Extra oil capacity. A windscreen. It might be an interesting project for the future. Have you ridden or owned the Sherco 450SEF or 500SEF? We are keen to hear what you liked. And what you didn't like! Let us know in the comments. The lack of known issues is a great start. The power delivery is brilliant. The big Sherco handles well and feels quite light. With the steering stabiliser it felt very steady at higher speeds. I don't know if it would feel twitchy at high speed without the stabiliser. The KYB suspension works better the harder you ride with this 2023 Sherco 500SEF. At slower speeds it can feel a bit harsh. Radiator fan, Radiator expansion tank, Akrapovic exhaust, Brembo calipers, Galfer brake discs, AXP bashplate, Selle Dalla Valle seat cover, Neken soft foam bar pad, Funnelweb air filter, KYB suspension , In-mold, durable graphics.One of the best things is the apparent reliability. As mentioned, this tour company have several thousand hours across their fleet now with zero problems.

    LONG TERM REPORT FROM TOUR COMPANY AFTER 50 SHERCO FOUR STROKES
    We are now on our third fleet of 17 bikes. We've owned over 50 of these bikes in the past 3 years now with each bike doing at least 180 hours and 12000km. Reliability is unquestionable with only one engine failure on a bike that had done a lot of work and was being ridden hard at the time.
    We only use top quality Motul 7100 at all times. The bikes do a lot of longer km's (ie no single track stuff) so we change oil and filter every 1000km (or earlier).
    We do top ends at 120 hours and valve clearances are pretty much always still in spec at that time.
    Most bikes don't need any adjustments across their life with us. We've got a couple of bikes at 300 hours that are still on original bottom ends as well.

    One owner said the rear sub-frame is quite weak. He replaced the M8 top bolt with an M10 as the bolt broke twice.

    Really enjoy the larger bore bikes for lazy trail riding. Indeed - stick it in 2nd / 3rd and cruise on that torque. Makes for a fantastic all day bike. No wonder the old XRs / DRs / DRZ are so popular.

      I totally agree, I did sell my drz 400 for an xr250 because there weren't enough dual sport trails. Love my XR for the single track and happy to move aside for the people in more of a hurry than me.

    We have a new one only 2 months old, just did the 1st oil change last week they have a magnetic plug, 2 pre filters and the oil filter is double the size of any other oil filter i've seen which is excellent for keeping the engine clean.
    OIl capacity for adventure riding is fine at over a litre, the Yamahas are only 690mls and we know how reliable they are, the stock kyb's are plush so we wont be doing anything with them, not sure about the torque setting when they left the factory as we needed a 2 foot torque wrench to remove the oil filter cover and plenty of wd40 and slowly without trying to break anything lol, fuel economy is really good 180ks easy out the stock tank, didn't find a need for a throttle tamer the throttles fine.
    The only negative i think is the bars are too low for trail riding and the grips suck (way too thin) other than that the bikes very good and looks trick!

      690ml for the Yamaha... damn! I loved my old FE570 for adventure riding, it had 1.4L from memory. Good to hear about the filters and magnet. If my brother buys one, we'll do some oil analyses to see exactly how far you can safely run without oil changes. I'm hoping 2000km of easy riding will be okay. At least while the engine is fairly new.

      @@crosstrainingenduro I don't mind doing oil changes every 1000kays its so quick and easy, the best ones were the CRF450Xs they had separate gearbox/oil 700ml for engine and 800 for gearbox great design that! and you could run high performance friction modified oil in the engine as they didn't interfere with clutch slippage, the Beta 480 is like that.

    There have been a few reports on FB of cam lobes pitting/flaking at low hours. My 2022 500sef exhaust cam lobe was one of them. Replaced with a new cam at 40hrs and so far so good. But definitley something to inspect. Love the bike

      Bummer. I wonder if it was a specific year model? I grilled the tour group's mechanic about common problems and all their cams had been fine.

      I'm not sure how you can claim they are reliable when not even 1 year old?
      A total failure after 170km of Day 1 Finke doesn't sound very reliable either.
      I'm all for anything that isn't orange, and love the look of these bikes...
      Anything is reliable if only trail riden...
      But it's a bit early to sing thier praises unless you have a vested interest with Sherco 😉

      Watch the vid again. I mention I also spoke to the guy who runs the Sherco owners page on Facebook. When I did my Sherco two stroke known issues vid, he gave me a long list of problems and which year models they applied to. When I asked him about four strokes? Well you can see his answer in the vid. I also spent an hour trawling forums looking for evidence of complaints from Sherco four stroke owners. The 450 model has been out for years now...
      I don't see how one case in Finke has much relevance unless you are an experienced desert racer, and a sample group of one is almost meaningless anyway. Remember the top riders do engine rebuilds after the first leg as failures on the return leg are so common. And finally, this tour operator hires their fleet out to riders doing Finke. No problems at the 2022 race.
      Problems may emerge over time with the 500. If they do, I'll certainly be putting them in the pinned first comment, as I always do.

      Flights, Fuel, Support Vehicles, Accommodation....
      Losing a once a year chance.....
      Because a new bike failed to make 226km.
      After all.... these are sold as race bikes..
      They even use the word "factory"
      Trail Riding isn't testing a bike.

    I found that my carb KTM 525 is a better power response than the EFI 450 Husky i have.The 525 can go just as quick but doesnt wear you out as much😀Nice review skipper!

    I just bought a 2020 450SEF to go.along with my 300sef and 300se. I use it as a supermoto on the track. I did ride it dirt a couple rides before conversion...most manageable 450 in the woods I have ever ridden. It makes a great sumo!

      I am really interrested to hear your thinking on this one. I currently own a 2022 300 se factory, but are thinking of trading it in for a 450 factory sherco. I am from holland and tend to ride the traditional enduro gp style riding. Fast, fields, woods, 2 track. No rocks and hills out here. Lots of deep sand and muddy fields.
      I owned a ktm 450 in the past, that was not my thing. I did own a 350 exc. I did like that. However, I would like to stay with Sherco. From what I have been reading, the 450 from sherco is a bit mellower that the KTM 450. So I think it would suit me, to be a bike in between the ktm 350 and 450.
      What are your thoughts?

    2021 500sef..190cm tall..bar risers and low pegs..suspension springs changed and adjusted to suit me..2200km..even mix of open trails and technical single trails..apart from one off decomp spring starting issue when new, its awesome..engine torque and power is awesome..you can lug it, ride it lazy, hold gears and use the torque to save energy, or get it reving for great fun..no breakdowns or complaints..its been crashed and crashed..its strong with radiator protection, disc protection etc..its very nice to ride compared to my previous bikes and will definitely consider upgrading to a newer one when mine is a bit tired..

      Great to hear, Neil. I went looking for known issues on all the Sherco four strokes over the years and it's slim pickings. They seem to have nailed the design well.... whereas they worked through quite a few issues with the two strokes from 2014 to 2020.

    I test road the full Sherco line up about the 2019 models and was quite surprised that it was the 500 that I fell in love with and tried to purchase. I was even working on getting the big Safari tank from Australia to Dual sport it. Then Sherco took away our great importer, RYP, and turned it over to some cow gal in Texas and killed the whole deal and Trial sales in the US. The Sherco comes with 220 watts and not all the electrical problems Beta's have. I had concluded a better bike than the Beta 500 but I didn't know anything about the rear subframe being week. Beautiful bike!

    One thing I keep hearing about the Sherco (and the Beta) is how comfortable it is to us 5' 7" (168cm) and shorter riders

      If these figures are accurate there doesn't seem to be a big difference, but of course the shape of the seat and bike width play a part too...
      Sherco 500SEF 950 mm (37.4 inches)
      KTM 500SEXCF 960mm (37.8 inches)
      Beta RS500 940mm (37 inches)

      I am 5’6” with a 28”-29” inseam and can confirm that Betas definitely feel more comfortable to me when compared to Hondas and Yamaha’s for some reason. KTMs are somewhere in the middle usually. The new CRF450 RL looks huge when I see it compared to a Beta for instance. It may just be a psychological thing, but something about Beta bikes appear more confidence inspiring even to the naked eye for shorter riders and I dig that for sure. I know the two strokes they build actually do have slightly shorter Seat heights.
      I am just starting to check out Sherco bikes after coming across a local dealer and I like them so far and sure hope they end up being shorter rider friendly. That would probably close the deal for me honestly.

    Haven't ridden one yet but Stewart from the weekend warriors enduro club has one as well as a 300 2t he got a suspension tuner from Newcastle to set it up and l chased him though the bush (watagans) and it was an absolute weapon great in tight and even better in Faster flow single track l was impressed and would consider it as my next hard enduro project for sure

    Hmmm, seems an interesting direction, possible the seemingly mythical unicorn of light, powerful and reliable adventure bike. Yeah I know, lots to be done to make it an ADV bike, but certainly a solid base to start with, and an inspiring direction 😎👍

      I've tried this a few times with an FE570, WR450F and RR480... I'll stick with the DR650 but my brother wants to give it a try with the Sherco.

    i brought a new sef 500 factory 3 years ago in the UK and its been a great bike, did 250 hours on it, and i did have a topend rebuild at 200 hours and it didn't need it as there was not wear internally at all....Used to chat to your mate David bates....As he raced one and he put me right on a few things.....for a 500 its a very easy bike to ride in all types of terrains, i traded it in for a beta 300 rr but sometimes wish i hadn't.. but there you go LoL

      I had a Husaberg FE570 with 500 hours when I sold it. I still hadn't done any engine work, not even a cam chain. I suspect the Sherco could be similar if not raced or ridden aggressively...

    Fodder for your next build series. Please DO make a light ADV conversion with RTW in mind mate. This, or the 500 EXF-F seem like candidates but I’d want to know the full detail, including maintenance schedules and methods, ease of maintenance , or difficulties. Good design elements and dumbass engineering foibles. Keep them coming bruv. Cheers from OFTR riders.

      My brother is very keen to give this a try and could buy the 500 in a month or two. Me? I've done a few conversions like that but will just stick with the DR650... but for sure it will make me jealous lol.

    love my 2021 500, for known issues plastic alignment wasn't the best on mine or my boyfriends, and from the manufacturer the rear subframe can be misaligned a bit, but happy to live with some cosmetic imperfections for the high quality and ride anywhere ability.

      @@crosstrainingenduro we light dual sport with them. We upped the front sprocket to 15, and it's still fully capable on single track (albeit more clutch work on rockier colorado tracks) while being able to comfortably cruise or pass on 75mph highway. It's still light so truck wash and high wind are no fun, but a more comfortable seat and better wind protection, and rig up some luggage and it would be an amazing adventure rig. We get 40-50mpg so a bigger tank would be nice for big distance but not sure what's available. Can always strap on some fuel jugs.

      Is this the same Sabrina that worked at Raymond? If so, glad to hear you and Andrew are still riding! I still try to get out at least once a week in the woods. Got rid of the RM250 and have a Beta 300RR now.

      Great to hear, Sabrina. I'm told 180km per tank for adventure riding so we might not even fit the bigger tank. We'll probably look at a cush drive hub too... expensive but good insurance for the gearbox and smoother on the road.

      Heaps of hours up now and we still love them... and we are trying to find out if there are long-term issues. I wouldn't have bought one a few years ago when they were still working out a few issues with the two strokes (see our known issues vid). But today? Very solid bikes.

      @@crosstrainingenduro good to hear. Thanks for sharing this content. It’s really helpful. For me, it’s down to the Sherco 300 SEF or the Beta 200 RR/300 RR two strokeS. I live in high altitude and rocky Colorado in the U.S., so I am always finding myself struggling with choosing between the EFI bikes and the lightweight two strokes. The 300 SEF seems to do lots of things well, so it’s in pole position this time around.
      Any insight you have to offer on two stroke vs four stroke for high altitude trail and enduro style riding (more woods and trail than hard enduro) is greatly appreciated.
      I also like the Beta 350 or 390 RR-S “dual sports, but I don’t really need the plate and added insurance and licensing costs given my riding interests. Enjoy your Sherco! Thanks again!

      I haven't really done big changes in altitude so can't comment. I do hear of riders who just adjust their jetting to a compromise position and find that works. The main thing with Beta nowadays is just dodgy electrics (see our last known issues vid). I reckon the Sherco and Beta are very comparable overall.

    I own a 500Sef-2022 modell
    Have had a bunch of issues on in unfortunately... The exhaust came from the factory leaking a lot from the front pipe, got a new one from sherco that solved it. Then at 18 hours i had to replace the steering bearings and linkage bearings... Just made of rust at that point, no grease from the factory whatsoever.
    The original battery died over a night at about the 30 hour mark. Got a new one from sherco.
    Then it got harder and harder to get it started, the camshaft were worn down after 36hours so bad that the auto decomp did not work anymore. Got all the parts new from Sherco and did the work myself.
    The Engine fault light comes and goes every ride.
    And the rear subframe is very weak, if the bikes falls over the subframe bends.. I had to replace the top bolt that hold the subframe to the frame to M10 bolts instead because the original M8 one have snapped of twice..
    Now I have about 50Hours on the bike and it runs great at the moment, the Sherco dealership is great and have helped me with all problems.

      Bummer, that's a lot of problems for one bike, Eddie. Did the dealer say if any of those issues had occurred on other bikes? I haven't been able to find others mentioning those issues, except possibly for the battery. I did find one or two complaints about the battery not lasting that long. But I am hearing that about lithium batteries on various brands...

      @@crosstrainingenduro No the dealer did not mention other bikes with same problems but the Sherco community in Sweden is not that big and 450/500 models aren't very common here. But I know at least one more 2022, 500 model with camshaft issues, and some 450 have had start issues that I've heard of.

      I will definitely keep an eye out for that and mention it in the pinned first comment if it's clearly a known issue. Re: the battery, I know the Shido battery they chose for the 21 model had a very small cranking amp rating and did not work well in cold conditions so Sherco changed to a 'BS' batteries for 2022. I'll keep an eye out for if this new battery is causing problems for others.

      @@crosstrainingenduro I have Shido battery as original, I believe it's the 2023 models that has gotten BS batteries as standard. My new replacement battery was also a Shido

      That s a lot of problèmes for one bike. I thought bearings and parts were aluminium on this bike

    I'm looking to buy my first bike and I am learning as i go (having to learn everything on my own) but i was wondering if these race oriented bikes need to have their valves checked at every oil change? the oil change intervals I can live with but that valve check is stopping me from taking the plunge if its true. I really don't want to have to settle on the crf300l haha. hopefully you can help steer me in the right direction

      The problem with the race oriented bikes is all the maintenance intervals in the manual are actually based on racing and are very short. But I don't think even the manual specifies valve checks at every oil change? For every day riding you can extend all those intervals by quite a bit. How much? I'd chat with a mechanic you trust.

    I have a 2020 sherco 500 sef, love the bike just have issues starting cold start battery dies but once jump started it's ok any ideas what it could be?

    I run 300ml in each fork, stock was 340. Not sure if they really feel that much more plush now though.

    Hey Barry, off topic for this vid, but have you got opinions on Beta 4T reliability? I've seen all your vids on the 2T problems. I really fancy a 390 these days.
    On a side note, I recently went on a multi day trip with a large number of guys. Beta electrical ruined one guy's week. A number of guys brought spare bikes on the trip; they were all on European bikes, everyone on a Japanese bike only had one.

      Generally the engines seem to be great, Tim. The main quirk is the plastic oil pump gears that are meant to be changed every 100 hours, but a few guys have said do them earlier as there were already teeth missing by that stage. They usually put metal replacements in. Beta electrics have never been great, but they've been particularly sloppy in recent years, I figure this will be the case for four strokes too. They really need to up their game or just outsource their electrics to the Japanese lol.

    What is a realistic hour expectation for a new bike before you it starts costing you more then a regular service?
    I know this will depend on what your riding and How you ride. People I ride with say about the 600 to 700 hour mark they start thinking about what are they going to do. I was hoping to get my 2020 fe 250 into the 1000 hour mark. Done 160 hours and everything in the engine still tip top shape says the mechanic.

      Very hard to say, Keith. Assuming a bike has no known issues and it's not ridden hard, I've always figured the first thing would be a cam chain. Next would be rings. Then a complete top end rebuild. Then eventually the bottom end too. What hours would all those need attention? I really don't know for four strokes. I only know two strokes and generally you don't need a top end rebuild until 200 hours if you don't ride aggressively.

      No, he went the other extreme and got a GS1200 lol. He spent a week riding one in the outback and enjoyed it though. It certainly had him interested.

      Probably about the same as all the other 450s and 500s.I'm not sure how relevant any of that is though... unless you are doing land speed records?

      @@crosstrainingenduro Well, at 2t 300 sherco, I noticed noticeable vibrations in the handlebar area, if you drive it at the same speed on the road, for example. When you ride in hard enduro mode, then yes, the vibrations are not felt on it. On the same drz 400, which I also have, there are much less vibrations. I'm thinking about buying a Sherco 500, so I'm interested in this question. This is a rare animal in our area).

      I'd just go for whatever is cheaper in that case. I figure the main benefit of the KTM is a bigger oil capacity and very tall sixth gear which are good for light adventure riding.

      I guess it just your typical enduro seat, Ron. After about 20 minutes of constant sitting I'd be on the pegs to prevent monkey butt lol. No one in the group seemed to say it was worse than your usual enduro seat.

      Never ridden the 500EXC so I wouldn't know, Simon. I doubt there would be much difference... probably just the price lol. The KTM will cost a fair bit more in Australia.

      I don't know, these can already been geared down. Hard to say, but it did feel like the ratios were a bit closer together than you'd normally expect on a big bore thumper.

    Having no kick starter option would make it a too risky proposition for remote touring, unless you’re in a group.

      Seems this is something that many have an issue with, but the bike has a 220W stator for keeping the battery and lights blazing while riding; even in the snotty stuff. Easy enough to carry a Lithium jump starter if you're that paranoid.

      I don't really see this as an issue, Martin. Almost every adventure bike has no kickstart, and most modern dual sport bikes don't either.

      @@crosstrainingenduro Yes that’s true, but having flattened batteries trying to start flooded engines, I reckon it’s a mistake to remove the kickstart option. It’s not as important when touring as when going bush, as these lightweight Sherco 500s are capable of (and where I usually ride), because you’re probably putting long miles under your belt when touring and so keeping the battery charged up. But when you’re frequently stalling and possibly drowning the bike in the slow stuff, I reckon a kickstart is essential. So much so that I’ll only replace my current bike with one with a kickstarter. It’s probably going to be secondhand - I think the TM 300 4st is the only new 4st bike that has it. Better paranoid than potentially stuck in the bush I reckon. What I don’t understand is why enduro bike manufacturers are all going this way, even removing the option of a kickstarter.

      I do think it's a shame they are even removing the option to have a kickstarter. I never ride by myself so I'm alway hoping that a tow rope will save the day. But it could really be a deal breaker for solo riders.

      It might point to an issue with the bikes but it might not either. I'll keep an ear out for everyday riders having gearbox failures though. All brands seem to have their failures at times at Finke. Walshy and Grabham both lost races when their KTMs failed. I hear the fully supported teams often rebuild the bikes for the return leg to try and minimise engine failures.

      Keep in mind the discounted Gaerne boots are often two to four years old already... check the stamped date on the inside of the boot. Does it make a difference? I don't know. But it's not just bizarre colour schemes that lead to discounts!

      The strange thing is all these bikes have done the Finke race. The tour group hires them out and there have been no rebuilds as yet... or issues. Have you heard of one blowing up? I do know the top riders rebuild their bikes overnight as otherwise there's a good chance they'll detonate on the return leg.

      Bike expired on Day 1 around the second last check point (170km mark)
      He was in 5th position until then.
      What a shame for all involved.
      It's not the only engine to fail on that wide open section.

    My brother and I raced one each in the NORRA 1000 in Baja. No issues other than starter switches failed. Field repaired by clipping the harness on the switch side and zip-tie and master clip to it. Bob's yer uncle. We beat the shit out of them and they we phenomenal.

    Both of those bikes finished. Only the nav towers were smashed. Later on, a billet footpeg was ripped off. No damage to frame tabs. They are tough.

      Good to hear, Zach. They did well at our last Finke desert race although one retired with bottom end issues. The top riders just hold the throttle pinned for hours so they often rebuild engines the night before the return leg... it's common for engines to blow up apparently.

      Another guy cooked his clutch too.
      Improved springs didn't help.
      Maybe there is an oil issue getting enough oil to the plates??
      Or the engine gets so hot the oil becomes out of spec and the clutch plates glaze??
      Who knows... and really, a brand new bike.
      Should we have to know?

      I had a chat with a local Sherco guru, he thinks there might be a quality control issue with Adler clutch plates. He reckons there's only a small percentage hitting problems but enough to say something is going on. Apparently clutch plates from some Honda models fit, and are a lot cheaper too... e.g. Honda XR600R.
