  • Do you LOVE sports but wonder how to participate in them safely due to asthma? In this video, Dr. Renee shares her 3 Tips for Participating in Sports With Asthma so you don't have to miss out!
Dr. Renee is a medical doctor, and a lifelong asthmatic. She uses her skills, knowledge, and experience to help people to live the life they deserve, asthma or no asthma!
There is three tips I'm giving you today on how to be able to participate in sports and be an asthmatic. Okay? Tip number one: you want to warm up. At least 10 minutes before you actually start the activity. So do a warmup so that your body can gradually get ready for what's about to happen. Okay? Tip two: take precautions if it is cold. What does that mean? That means cover your mouth and your nose. Because if you're out in the cold air and you don't cover your mouth and your nose, more than likely you will have an asthma attack before you have even started the activity. So make certain you do that. And tip number three: use an inhaler! That contains albuterol. Albuterol is a bronchodilator, and it is effective in 80 to 90% of people with exercise induced asthma, as a preventative therapy. So it should be taken about 15 minutes before you start. And the effects last four to six hours.
I wrote a book about asthma and allergies.

I play soccer and you are correct in the fist tip, if I don't warm up the asthma is gonna be there.
I have been reducing my asthma episodes by working on my stamina doing long distance running even if it hurts. It has help a lot.

Surfing. Gym 5 days a week. MMA. Even warming up doesn't completely mitigate the asthma with surfing. However it helps and after 20 minutes in the water I'm usually pretty good.
COVID has messed up my control over the asthma quite a bit. On different long acting inhaler which seems to be helping. I also have bad allergic rhinitis.

I’m sorry. I’ve probably taken 6 COVID vaccines just to make certain it avoids me like the plague because this is my worse nightmare come true. I don’t want my asthma to return to its prior state.

I used to play basketball for 9 years and I always had difficulties playing, although I loved it, people never understood how it felt like to have it. I also did track in my last two years of my career as a short-distance runner, and it was a miracle to me that I was struggling less than with basketball. I couldn't believe it honestly.

As for the olymic athletes To be fair I wouldnt be supprised if they "have asthma" due to positve effects inhalers can have on performance. That would explain the skewed stastists.

I only got told by my mom I had been diagnosed with astma since I was born and she had thought I had grown it out. Turns out no but I realy still want to play field hocky and believe if I take it slow and the right precautions I could do it because my astma is not as bad as some might think.

You can but you might have to regularly try to run long distances. Like maybe try to run half a mile every day for example and slowly add a little bit of distance to that every day or every few days as you get more and more comfortable so you can gradually raise your endurance. David Beckham actually had asthma by the way so you can be an elite athlete with asthma
