- Finally, we put the @WhitelandRestorations Skoda Yeti through its paces. Tuned up to 206bhp and a mighty 340lb/ft of torque, it can get a shift on. But is it as practical as our Citroen Berlingo? There's only one way to find out!

Glad you enjoyed taking Yoda the Skoda for a little spin! It really is hard to think of something to replace it, it does everything so well.....just could do woth more space in the boot. It's such a hoot to drive!

@@stuartcreaney1219 to hit over 200 it would have to, the 108/140 bv40 turbo won't go beyond a real 170 or so hp. Watching the acceleration effort, this is likely a BV40 tuned, which is certainly a nice thing, but more 170hp, especially with DPF in place. I had my Yeti at that power level for a few years, and it was a lot of fun. I'm now over 200hp, but took a 170/177 turbo ( GTC1749vz ) to achieve that.

IMO VAG Have lost their way in recent years by making cars which are too big and complex, and by concentrating too much on hybrids and EVs.

@@cornishhh saying as a 2018 Fabia owner it's most likely going to be my last if we have to change, ours we have had since new, covered 28600 miles, only issue we have has was the Heater blower resistor going and having to replace dampers and springs, it's been realible but nothing in the current Skoda Range really floats my boat. Great little family car in estate form.
A Skoda Yeti should be a future Hubnut fleet car.
Too new, far too much electronics to be a HubNut car. Only one electrical fault from uneconimical repair sadly.

Most of the Hubnut fleet would be considered beyond uneconomical repair, but Ian keeps going because he loves his cars.
No actually not. The Yeti is not rusty, it has been serviced according to the rules and it is clean. Ian and co prefer the cabin to look like a landfill. I can vividly imagine what their home looks like

@@MattBrownbill The same could be said of Bella's electronics because French. My parents have a 2009 Octavia they have owned since new and it has been 100% reliable it's whole life (and if they ever decide to get rid of it I am snapping it up).

Every time I see a Yeti on the road, I feel a pang of envy. They're brilliant cars and Skoda/VAG have shot themselves in the foot by discontinuing it.
Skoda are the cars I wish we could get in the US. Affordable, practical, no b.s.
If you want something that feels similar that I think was sold in the US try to find an early 2000s Tdi VW Passat station wagon. My parents went from a 2002 Passat to a 2009 Octavia and they are remarkably similar to drive, half of the interior of the skoda was inherited from the previous model Passat as ait's all out of the same VAG parts bin. The biggest difference is they gave the Passat a firmer, sportier ride and it's a little lower ground clearance.
They couldn’t offer them in the USA because nobody would buy them…they would want high spec models that Skoda doesn’t offer…might as well buy the equivalent Volkswagen! But then they are unreliable so…buy a Mazda.

A 4X4 2.0 170 DSG in Laurin & Klement spec with the brown leather interior and extra features is a lovely car indeed.

I remember on our 3 years on a row trips to the UK (we are from Argentina, my wife and I) spotting those averywere. We don't get Skodas in Argentina. I remember thinking "that's a clever car"
Those rear seats are removable and with them taken out the load capacity is basically van like. Also impressive is the turning circle! These cars were a great package.
Superb cars the Yeti, cannot fault at all. Lovely drive, comfortable, quiet, frugal.
Have a 1.2 petrol, 2015, love everything about it, surprising performance, comfortable long journeys, so much room once the seats are down. Use it for my business and as a great family saloon. Can't believe they got rid of it, I'm asked all the time if I want to sell it! No way.
Starting in 2011, we ran 2 Yetis over 7 years. The first was a TDi 130 ex-demo, kept it for 2 years and only needed regular servicing with no faults, sold on for close to the purchase price with only 19k miles. Next one was another TDi 4x4 Elegance 170 with the big Velux roof. Bought new from a Nottinghamshire dealer, one of several available from a cancelled fleet order at £5k under list. 5 years later, 74k miles on the clock and the only faults were failed heating element in the driver's seat and the rotary switch for the pan roof dropped to bits, both fixed under warranty. Not the sharpest to drive, some body roll but very comfortable for long distances, we'd regularly go from the Scottish Borders to Ullapool in under 5 hours with a single stop. Fuel cons overall was 40+ mpg on both, and annual servicing at our local independent garage with MOTs as required. Brilliant cars and sadly missed. Now running for nearly 5 years, another ex-demo, this time a Kodiaq 4x4 TDi 150 DSG with the Velux, 7 seats and a tow hitch. Like most others, low mileage during Covid lockdown and now a total of 54k miles on the clock. Still ultra reliable and comfortable with the same level of economy. Other than regular servicing, only had to replace the driver's side window switch panel, both front window one-shot closing failed. Quite a few neat touches in our original Yeti have been ditched, for example, if the car was locked, wipers in auto and it started raining, all windows and the pan roof would close automatically. There are plenty still around but getting old now and I think the latest one we've seen is a 67 plate, must have been one of the last. By this age, some of the usual problems are coming around, broken springs are common, discs and pads and it must be common to the VW group, after about 5 years, the rear bottom corners of the front doors are a bit crusty.
Great video, and totally resonate with the problem of what to replace the Yeti with. My 2014 4x4 TDI is now at 320,000kms, and still RATTLE FREE, decided rather than replacing it I'd totally overhaul it, and it's now back to 24,000kms with full moving parts from a low km wrecked Yeti, and a Audi Q3 177 modified engine thanks to Darkside. Lots of Golf R/GTI/Octy VRS parts, lowered with suspension work, and it's just such a fun, pokey go cart of a car, that nobody else around here has. Probably never part with this car, endlessly enjoyable.
Always thought of it as the rebirth of the Matra Rancho!
I really dislike SUVs, but I love the Yeti. It’s just such a good, honest, easy to use and practical bit of kit; they’re unpretentious, classless, funky, and ultimately, cool. A pre-facelift, small-wheeled, diesel, DSG (to avoid leg/dash interface), Yeti on CrossClimates would be my pick for every car I’d ever need. Why the hell have I not got one?
The yeti shares much with the VW caddy van. Especially the front suspension & brakes.
It has a cult following.
Mine is a 63 plate Yeti Adventure , with 75k, fsh and owned by the same family since 6 months old (110bhp remapped to 145bhp only due to having the 5 speed box). The 5 speed box takes a max of 250nm, the 6 speed 350nm. A graphics designer friend made a bespoke badge for the rear, 'Betty the Yeti' with the abominable snowman.
Spotted a car a fancied, and was offered £3550 trade in 😮
I had a 14 plate YETI OUTDOOR SE TDI CR. Was one of the best cars I ever owned.

Being a Škoda fanatic, I always had a soft spot for the Yeti, its quirky appearance was quite radical at the time of its launch.

I owned two Yetis, Mk1 & Mk2. Like you said, VW shot Škoda in both feet when they abandoned the Yeti.
It was time for me to upgrade and there was no replacement 😢
I bought the Mk2 LEAF and after that a LEAF+.
A lottery win would see me going to "Moggy" in Wales for a special order. Get a first class s/h Yeti, take my existing LEAF and build an electric YETI. ❤
I bought lots from Czech company who sold parts. For both my Yetis I bought overpanels that fitted over the "B" pillar/doors and gave the roof a "floating" appearance. Your white one really demonstrated my dislike for the "untreated" pillar.

I had the honour of dressing up as the Skoda Yeti for the launch to help out the Skoda garage I used to work at. Very fond of them. The 2.0TDi is a good unit and all the controls are very well laid out. Always had a soft spot for the Roomster too.
Just saw one with my father today, and we both said how we loved it, the double headlights, big interior space (and 1.8 TSI engine)
Long awaited Yeti review. I loved mine. Also loved both my Roomsters. And now I love my Karoq. Skoda make great cars! Oh and I had a Xsara too. No likey so much 😁

I have a 2014 tdi 170 4x4 (with all season tyres). As an everyday car its very very good. Soon to be remapped to 220bhp!
I rented a base 1.2 turbo. Likeable car, everything most people need.
My parents have a similar problem as Lianne - they have a Renault Scenic Xmod (which in many ways are quite similar to a Yeti) and there simply is nothing newer on the market that is as all-round usefull and practical anymore. I drove it again the other day and was once again blown away by how amazingly good it is at being a well thought through car. When will the car industry realise that SUVs are not the only answer to every question... ?

Went shopping for a new Yeti in 2012 but the dealer had a 1.6l diesel Roomster for a lot less money. Quirky yes, but has been faultless. The luggage capacity is officially larger than the Yeti. But for looks the Yeti wins.
I have seen a Skoda roomster 2006 but with 186,000 kilometres at auction it sold one week but is back at the auction ( could be a mistake) but very tempted it's light gold I like the looks it's a 1.9 diesel .. I have read that the looms deteriorate, what do you think?
VG styling on the Yeti. It did not adapt the typical VWG style. And the Yeti name is such a winner.
I had a Yeti back in 2012. It was a brilliant car. Mine was an Elegance model with the 6 speed manual 2.0 TDi lump and a claimed 170PS. At the time there was quite a waiting list but I got mine ex demo with very low miles on the clock. It went well, stopped well (the 170PS and above models had uprated larger discs if I recall correctly. For a tall car it handled and rode well but could get a tad choppy at lower speeds on lumpy pot holed roads. Mine was a 4x4 and yes I used winter tyres in the err... winter that made a huge difference to the available grip. The rear seats not only folded flat but tumbled as well to get even more space but if you needed even more you could remove them individually. A characterful car that was practical and fun to drive. Keep an eye out for when the DPF was regenerating though as there was no indication of it occurring apart from a raised idle, they don't like to be stopped during a regen I heard from a few sources at the time. I'd consider another one if I could justify it in a heartbeat. I'm also not totally sure what changes they had done since the VAG diesel gate furore. The Ford CMax with the 2l turbo diesel is a lot of fun, practical too. Not sure about the stated HP but it always felt way more power than it really needed.

@@nikonordman7624 Yea, Auto diesels are super rare here in the UK. The CMax has a 6 speed manual, getting around 60 mpg (UK).

We did the NC500 at New Year in our 2014 facelift 1.2TSI DSG. I disagree that any character was lost in the refresh, the xenon/halogen headlamps are some of the best I’ve used on any car and the interior upgrades work really well too. Like other Yeti owners, I can’t work out what to replace it with!
But its good to remember that first FWD Skoda, Favorit, was developed before Volkswagen era.
Porsche did the engineering too.
@@shand1967 I dont know anything about it. Body was made by Bertone, but probably you tink about other car, russian Lada Samara, developed with Porsche. In eighties Porsche help everybody witth everything, just to make some money :) They even build rally Lada Samara for Paris-Dakar. But under plastic body it was mostly 959.
There is a nice little storage drawer under the front passenger seat too.

The 6 speed box although not much different to drive is a stronger box and the clutch plate is a little bigger too meaning it takes the extra power of a remapped engine like this one better
We leased a Yeti Outdoor TDI from 2014-17 in 115 BHP form. So much character, brilliant shape, very practical and looked wonderful. Performance was limited shall we say, but we absolutely loved the car. Way more interesting than a Qashqai or any other small SUV imho. We replaced it with an Octavia Scout which was wonderful, but the Yeti remains one of our all time favourite cars.
Only challenge was the drivers seat which lacked a little length under the leg so for long journeys was a little tiring.
I used to transport washing machines and that tailgate lip can be a right pain for getting them out. My Felicia estate was like that as they are just a stretched hatchback. I had to make up a platform level with the opening.
Berlingo definitely wins there. Entirely flat to the lip.
I have owned a Roomster for the last 10 years and other than the Yeti I can’t think what I would replace it with.
Love the Yeti - future classic. Bought my 2014 1.2 Elegance with 100 miles on it and 6 months old ( looks great in Jungle Green ). Now on 66000. This one is rare in this trim petrol / manual, how many left say only 38 ever registered !!! My daughter now has it, but as she still lives at home it’s still mine ( don’t tell her ). Replaced with a Karoq, great car but no character ! Have already said I will have it back if my daughter ever wants to change it ?. I/we still get compliments that it’s like new and why did Skoda stop making it !

I have a yeti tdi 110ps in Ireland. Its ideal for here or Wales where we also go. You can also get a yeti sherpa which is a 2 seater van, or take the back seats out of the yeti car, to give van like space. Mine is very low mileage so I'm expecting at least another 10 years before I change it. Our other car is a 1998 octavia! Both would be good hubnut cars
I immediately thought of the Berlingo when i saw this. Looks like a practical and roomy car and it's a shame they don't make them anymore.
The Yeti was a great car. I have the 2014 facelift 2.0d 110PS version, and I had it re-mapped to 150PS - a worthwhile upgrade IMHO. I wouldn't have wanted to go any higher however because the front brakes are not really up to the job. I have heard that you can upgrade to larger discs (VRS spec) but my front brake setup didn't seem to match any of the videos I'd watched when researching how-to. Shame that Skoda discontinued this car. Now I'm left pondering what to replace it with, and my best option seems to be a BMW 3 from around 2015, with the 3.0d engine (though I worry about reliability of the N57 series engines).
I quite like these and actually looked at getting one last time I was in the market for a used car, however, I discovered that they hold their value really well (cult following?) here in Aus', and I ended up getting a 2L Tdi Skoda Superb for less money than an equivalent Yeti would have been. Even in standard 125kw (168hp) form, my Superb is pretty "nippy" too, and I love the torque, like you Ian. Cheers!

I have the Skoda Roomster 1.2tsi.
Which I think is more Hubnut because they can be had a lot cheaper.
I paid £800 for mine tip run dog car and general beast of burden it’s taken all in its stride.
Loads of room reliable and surprisingly good to drive although not as quick.

Dad had this same year same colour, standard tune he loved it until EGR water pump failure couple of broken springs made him get rid 90.000 miles
I went in a Golf with a DSG gearbox a while ago, was really impressed with how snappy it was.
On performance and handling, the Yeti every day. I have one, chip tuned, such a laugh. Yes, I have a Berlingo too!
I’ve got a 2013 1.2 DSG which has had some issues over 7 years of ownership. Surprisingly nippy. I’m sure I read that there was about 250 permutations available. As an example mine does not have centre arm rest, USB points or storage box on top of dash.
I feel that glovebox was somewhat oversold by clarkson, it doesn't seem big enough to fit a former supermodel... :P
My mother has got one. 1.2 petrol. Its a great car. I can't imagine them replacing it with anything.
SUVs are poor replacements for MPVs that seem to be dying off 😢 Fashion over function. Less economical and less practical.
I've had two of these - both 4x4 TDI diesels ...and I love them. Can't disagree with anything said here. Clutch replacement (failed master cylinder (this being inside the gearbox)) resulted in a £2700 bill fom a main dealer for clutch and flywheel. £650 for cambelt/water pump service replacement. And my second one seems to eat antisway bar droplinks too. But all in all a great, versatile car. You didn't demonstrate the easy total removal of the rear seats - you can then put half a ton of logs in the back.
One thing I don't like is the low-down position of the vemtilation controls - taking eyes off the road to see which button to press is potentially dangerous.
Yes had Bridgestone 4 season tyres 👍 on my Skoda Octavia estate with the 1.6 Diesel lump 7speed DSG plus have 4 season continental rubbers on my push bike that inspire confidence👊 when up hill and down Dale regardless of air temperature as a slip on a bike will certainly sting in the morning.
And a few notches up from the Skodas of the 1970s!

I owned a 2011 Roomster TDi. Was a fab car and loved the looks. Possible replacement for Bella? Just an car?

My grandson has one of these, he says the Yeti is a great car to drive. BTW, how many call outs do the AA get on motorways daily because cars don't carry a spare wheel? As you mention Ian, so many manufacturers have abandoned whole sectors of the car market, discontinuing many models (I've tended to buy Fords, I now can't think of a new or newish Ford model I'd want to buy, currently I'm hanging on to my 9 year old C Max Grand Titanium 7 seater 1.6 diesel, they stopped making these 5 years ago). Most 6 speed diesel vehicles show around 2000 to 2200 rpm at around 70 mph, so your point about the need for some 6 speed boxes is well made.
I was contemplating getting one but for some reason they were a lot more expensive at the time than an Octavia so I went for that instead. 2013 4x4 2.0TDI DSG with 'bad roads package'. Also tuned to about 200 horses 😅 Going on 8 years under my ownership and just about to get to 340000km.
I think there may be the answer to the Berlingo question... Such a cool car

Always loved that car. There is actually a (spiritual) successor to the Yeti. The Dacia Jogger. And as my current car it's a brilliant hauler. Looks like a raised estate but in fact it's a SUV/MPV... or is it the other way round?🤔
Remember as a member of Briskoda going to their national day in July 2009 at Gaydon and Skoda UK brought along a couple of LHD German registered Yeti's just before they launched, so we were the first people apart from Journalists to get a look at them.
Did look at getting one of these a few years back when we learned they ended production but our local dealer never had any, so we ended up with the Fabia we have now as the family car.
Think you need to try a Roomster, that's a car I need to scratch a itch as well.
Now a Roomster just looks like two or three design teams drew one bit of the car, folded the paper over and gave the following team the next bit of the car to do! Doesn't work for me, but the Yeti shouldn't have been dropped as it looks good as well as being practical and easy to own.
I suppose the baby Picasso that's van shape is the only one left that carries this on these days?
I went and looked at one at the dealer around 2011. Loved the look and wanted to love the car as a whole. Sadly I found the driving position awful. The seat squab was very short and the instrument binnacle felt cross eyed. Also, VW parts prices in Australia and the questionable reliability was enough to put me off. Of course now they are just a well used car I am tempted to pick one up for a banger.
We have a 2012 1.6 TDI one with just over 100k on the clock.
Genuinely the best car(s) I've owned.

The 2.0 tdi is king for the VAG group. Economical and plenty powerful in anything it can be fitted to and was fitted to. A 140hp Audi Q5 is still quick with one.
