Which will be better off-road - a £174,000 Mercedes-AMG G63, or a £2,000 Skoda Yeti? Well, we’re about to find out!
So let’s see how the two compare. Starting with the AMG, it’s powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 which can deliver 585hp and 850Nm of torque. It’s also built on a ladder frame chassis with 3 lockable diffs, and it’s pretty heavy, tipping the scales at around 2,500kg.
In comparison, the Skoda Yeti comes in a whole lot lighter, at around 1,500kg! But it’s also way down on power, with its tuned 2-litre TDI Diesel engine producing 181hp and 407Nm. However, it’s also been lifted and had some underfloor support added to it, so it’s definitely prepared to go off-road!
So how will this one play out - will it be an easy win for the G63? Or could the Yeti snatch it? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

Tbf the yeti is probably one of the most expensive second hand Škoda’s around. 10 year old models are still mostly north of £5000
I don't know how they got it so cheap though- the cheapest in Germany right now is 5k and the usable ones start at 15k...
An entire new undercarriage is not a few mods though.
It'll be interesting to see a comparison between two G-Wagon's one with Street Tires and one with Off-Road Tires, educational purpose :)

Yes. Tires are key. G is still an expensive way to go but nearly unstoppable with a proper setup. Older non-AMG models will accept down to a 16" wheel and you can fit some proper tires.

No one is actually going to use a G wagon off-road, it's too expensive. You only see them driving around London. It's also too heavy really. The original G wagon was a military vehicle and much lighter.

Not really, the only reason Skoda won some challenges was that it was cheap and they were not afraid to damage it
@@Spasm975 you are correct, but tires actually have massive difference in off roading. Car guys say that a new set of good tires is the best upgrade for any vehicle.

That g wagon is incredible up the hill with road tyres. Mind blowing traction in that mud.

It's a mix of complicated systems and very simple principles. The simple part is diff locks, the complicated part is electronically controlled limited slip differentials. Now I don't know the particulars about the G-Wagon but I'm guessing they have individual braking of the wheels to assist with power transfer to the wheels with the best traction. It can assist with both traction and cornering. So it has a lot more tech than the Skoda, which doesn't even have locking differentials and even less the limited slip kind. Now the braking trick used earlier in the video does work, but can be a bit tricky to get right.
In older offroad designs you often have a offroad setting where there's a calibrated load applied to the brakes. It's high enough the vehicle won't roll down a slight decent without the aid of the engine. This helps both with descent but also improves handling in terrain with the differentials unlocked. However when you lock the differentials it doesn't make any real difference when climbing.
With active per wheel braking and electronically controlled limited slip differentials the systems can cooperate and you get great ability to climb while retaining a lot better maneuverability than you get with locking differentials or even simple mechanical limited slip differentials.

@@mediocreman2 if an Outback gets done over offroad by a junk Audi with its abysmal Haldex system then it's because the Subaru is broken. There is no physical way the junk as it gets fake 4wd Haldex system can cope with Subarus 4x4 system it's not possible in any way shape or form and its common knowledge that its on another playing field. Also an old Jimny would whoop everything including the cars in this vid like they were nothing. It would make them look silly. I think an old £500 Fiat panda with the same tyres as the Yeti beats everything in this vid easily.

I own a skoda karoq with all seasons on it, was on a game shoot last season and my mates in there Range Rover and disco with big allows and shit tyres were squirming all over on the grass banks compared to me haha ! Impressed with the off road electronics in it tbf

@@bigduphusaj162 Firstly as capable as it is, I doubt a stock Jimny would embarrass everything they've made and secondly, the Yeti is basically a VW Golf which has no business going anywhere near that course. Has that Yeti struggled wher they've taken it? Of course it has, but its almost always got the job done. It is an impressive car.

1st round is almost never won by expensive car as the driver never gives full throttle to avoid the jump in the end and that is to avoid the damage on lender's car.
The driver in 60 percent throttle only.
In this video, Skoda only won because of that, and the same for the challenge with the turn through the forest, Skoda was sent 100%, whenever G class was like 10-20% at maximum

Skoda Yeti is a great little 4WD. Pity Skoda produced them for just a short while.
Used Skoda Yetis are in high demand. A car dealer told me last year he buys every one he can find at auction as they sell like hot cakes. Not bad for a car discontinued in 2017.
I guess it’s so popular because it’s one of the last truly practical cars before everything was turned into (less practical) SUVs

The Yeti is one of the best cars I've ever owned and no one will change my mind. I had it in the 4x4 version and it drove like a dragon in the forest and in the city and on the roads. The best car

That looked like Matt pressed the cruise control "slow down" button on the stalk on the Yeti not the off-road button as that's on the centre console, hence all the wheelspin too.

The tires makes the difference (and the weight)
Offroad tires against normal tires makes all the difference.
As a TD5 owner, I approve of the number plate. Keep easter eggs like that up and I might subscribe ahaha
a thing to remember when watching this is, that you will always be able to build a to beat an expensive one for cheaper than the expensive one, especially when hurting the expensive one by not setting it up right for the task
Lightweight and off-road tires, certainly make a big difference to performance off-road. Yeti is a good little car anyway. Those mods certainly upped its game. 😊
